I just bought a 8.9, to upgrade my venerable original galaxy tab 7 that's been working flawless for the past couple years. One of the things I love about the original galaxy tab is that its basically a big phone. I prefer that layout to a tab layout where everything is small and many elements misplaced or ridiculousness small. Changing DPI on the 8.9 really doesn't solve the problem and it makes it incompatible with app's download with Google Play and other probelms.
Basically id like to get the 8.9 working with a phone UI, not tablet UI. I read a while ago somewhere that switching between phone and tablet modes in ICS is very easy, simply editing the build.pro and removing the lcd density line altogether, and instead using the line:
ro.build.characteristics=tablet
-or-
ro.build.characteristics=phone
I'm on a ICS build on my 8.9 but that doesn't seem to work.
Any ideas or suggestions would be super appreciated
Just saw your post I was searching for answers for this myself. Simply change your LCD density to 240. Make sure to have something like LMT Gesture installed as you loose your navbar. This worked with the latest CM9 for me.

Thanks for the reply.. Ive set the DPI to 200.. most elements seems better though I had to do several reboots after I changed the DPI till everything worked well.. specially LauncherPro that got all messed up for the first reboots (I use it as an alternative to TouchWiz that is horrible). Ive been using Button Savior App which is decent. Compared to my Galaxy Tab 7, the 200 DPI setting I have not is still not as right. So, UR suggestion is to up it a notch to 240, correct? Ill give it a try!! Thanks again
Not sure if you experience any lag from button savior but I strongly recommend LMT. Yup, 240 is right! 240 makes it just like a big phone.
---------- Post added at 02:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:48 PM ----------
Also be careful if your on a stock ROM as it may crash certain elements of touchwiz.

I have completed Framework and 2-3 more apks its turn of launcher its completed too just adding wallpapers is left
The problem is this: When i add more wallpapers (Wallpaper_name.jpg , Wallpaper_name_small.jpg) properly resized, after adding them to launcher, they sometimes don't show up in the menu -> wallpapers -> wallpaper gallery
or sometimes get added but while scrolling it comes to the thumbnail(small) wallpaper before it & hangs then says me to force close means its added but dosent even shows its small nor full pic.
only the default ones work
what can be the problem & how to solve this problem ?
I have tried :
1. Making the pic small in size(KB) by using PHOTOSHOP CS4 save for web & devices .... Still wont work
2. Tried usind different wallpaper from other themes......they too may hang or wont show up
some one plz help
This seems to be the problem we are all running in to. It seems to be a file size and free space issue within the OS that is causing the angst.
What I personally have decided to do is provide wallpaper pictures in a seperate downloadable file and just copy the images to the SD card to install teh wallpaper that way. It will keep the file size down and allow the user to choose the wallpaper that they want.
i havent been able to "add" wallpapers to anytheme, what i have done is just save my custom wallpaper with the same name as one of the defaults, replacing it in launcher and it works. my very first theme was like this so it isnt related to space issues
ya it isnt space problem its something related ti the jpg images i tried removing all the stock wallpapers only kept the one default , then added one of mine means it had only two wallpapers means even more space in the system partition
but when i install it it starts properly with default wallpaper but when i go into wallpaper selection it asks to force close that apk...
so i think the images too must be hard coaded or the xmls need to be edited...
trying using blank images to keep file size down. plus check out your theme size. roughly round 10.7, 10.8 is the limit i experienced. Makes sure you also signing your launcher apk
The theme is not complete so there only framework-res.apk, launcher.apk, contacts.apk, camera.apk in it with signed certificates and update-script in it
After installing it completes the installization successfully, then boots up properly with custom glow boot screen I can use the phone as normal, make calls, emails, and all the functionality...
But when I go to choose wallpaper, it hangs at the thumbnail image before the custom one... why is this happening I can't understand but I ll try getting it before theme competition...
Also I ll try using blank images and let u know... after m at home how I am in college...
Succeded but lost something
I have succeeded installing those wallpapers but i had to name it after the default ones so lost the default wallpapers...
yeah thats exactly what u need to do, just replace the icons or wallpapers form within the system, dont think there is another way to properly "add" things on top of the system...
and trust me, no one will miss the default wallpapers...
thanks guys i ll be soon posting the screenshots of my theme

Speaking of replacing things..... is that clock for FadeToBlue in the works? You've got my hopes up high when you've said you'd make one for me. Not a biggie, it's just that original FadeToBlue clock drives me nuts. Theme is all clean, proffesional looking and clock looks like...well...ummm... What is it that happens at 213 DPI that triggers Tablet UI?
Why cannot we have the Tablet UI at higher DPI?

If I understand correctly, it is up to the app to decide at what DPI the tablet interface is used. If this is true, it seems odd that every single app out there switches at 213 DPI, so I'm probably wrong!
Can't we just trick apps into thinking your DPI is lower than it is?

You can use imilka's CyanogenMod 9 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1589375 to set your Note in Tablet Mod. It works - i tried, check it out.
Depending on your ROM, you can try to use Markets Apps to change the DPI (but not App- related): LCDDensity works fine with latest GB.

If i am not wrong till now all the tablets we have are below the 213dpi mark. Aorund 160 to 180 dpi on all tablets. So lets see if the tablet ui can be achieved at higher dpi because the higher the dpi gets it will increase the size of everything on screen (apps fonts layout)and then it will be difficult to accommodate everything on the screen.

I'm running CM9 as well, but doesn't that tablet mode zip just set the DPI to 213? Or is it not dependent on DPI? That would be pretty sweet.

I took a peek inside that zip, and it looks like it just changes the build.prop file to one that has the lcd density (DPI) set to 213. So it doesn't "lock" it in tablet mode or something like that.
Also, the URL you posted is messed up.
would be great if you could trick apps into thinking your dpi is less than 213 but really not.
Would love to use evernote tablet UI without having to have such a low dpi

There is no way to run "in tablet mode" with a DPI. 213 dpi starts the tablet UI. But, like someone else said, true tablet UI is actually 160 dpi. You wouldn't want tablet UI to be "huge" on your phone like 320 dpi (the note) is. 280 dpi is like standard phone dpi, but the Note is 320.
Just the way android is built. But, it wouldn't be tablet if it was above 213.
It can get confusing, but I think we are over analyzing this, haha.

Well what I am trying to understand is that-
Say we are at 220 DPI which is not too big, but big enough to not to have a tablet UI. But at 220 DPI Note looks awesome, with things not too big or not too small.
So if all the apps try and get the DPI values from Android OS and switch their lay out accordingly, isn't it possible to fool these apps (like we do for play store) to think that the DPI is <213 so that they are laid out in tablet UI?
Any ideas? Looking around dont see much on it.
What do you mean, an issue with it ? Your question is pretty vague and we can't do too much to help you without more details.
Stock CM9 install sets your DPI at 160. You can change this at any time by modifying your build.prop and changing the setting for lcd.density to something else - 120 is another common one to use. It's all a matter of personal taste. I have come to like the 160 - it isn't TOO big, but it's big enough, and things work quite well.

Changing the LCD Density requires a reboot. Please share the app that does this, as I have yet to find one.
One solution is to keep the LCD at 160, but using GO Launcher HD. You can set the icons to be smaller, and it overall looks much nicer then 120, which I find is wayyy to small.
There's a patch that you can flash available in the Alpha2 thread on Rootzwiki. As for an app, I haven't found one that just changes your lcd.density of your build.prop, but it is doable relatively easily.
I use an App from Google Play called 'DPI Changer'.
I know there are some ICS (Phone) Roms that have PAD (Per App Density) feature and you can configure how you want it, but it's something built in to the Rom. Changing the dpi now does require a reboot.

Another option for those who stay at 160 dpi is the change the font size to small in the display settings. It makes the display much better. I prefer to run at 120 with the font set to huge which is another option that works pretty well.

Sorry for the OT:
If you do want to change your navbar icons, you can use this:
SoftKeyZ ★ root - Janis Elfert
Ensure you make a full backup or that you have the necessary experience to recover from any potential issues that may come up after using the app.
Sometimes it causes a boot loop or your navbar may disappear.
Most of the times, it is solely because permissions are incorretly set for SystemUI.apk, set it to 644(-rwxr--r--) if that happens
Let's move this to the thread you previously created to avoid going off topic here.
