sd partition - Galaxy Ace S5830 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i used to have a sd ext...but then i formated it and this error came (E:format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblkop2)...now i always get this error when i wipe data/ system on the cwm...so if anyone know how to slove it...please help me...!!!

Something got messed up in your sd card.
Reformat and repartitio it:
Use a card reader and insert the sd-card to your pc. Make a backup of all its contents (remember to include hidden files), and then format it entirely. Repartition it, then copy your backup to your sd card.

Recovery won't work with new SD Card

So I got a new 16 gb SD Card, I'm not sure if there is a proper way to transfer all your files from one to another but I just copied all the contents from my 4 gb card onto the new one.
Everything has been fine so far but when I tried to do a nandroid backup (using ClockworkMod Recovery 1.8.1.4) I got an error message:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(Invalid argument)
Can't mount /sdcard
I tried reflashing the recovery through the Rom Manager app but it still gives me that error message.. Will I have to reflash Amon's recovery using fastboot? Does this have anything to do with the fact I'm using a new card?
Thanks in advance for any help
i had a similar problem. my 8gb memory card would NOT let me restore a nand backup. it would create the backup just fine, but would not restore. i got some error saying "run nand.restore mobile via terminal" or some such thing.
i never did figure it out. but when i copied the EXACT contents of that memory card to a different card, nand backups and all, it suddenly worked fine. identical files.
i even formatted the card to make sure, but still wouldnt work. good luck
Yea Roger, I've tried transferring the contents of the old SD card but it doesn't help.
Anyone else ever have troubles switching to a new SD card? I can't do anything from the recovery, flash from SD, format SD, nandroid backup or restore etc. I've tried reformatting the SD card as well as transferring the contents of the old SD card to the new one, still doesn't work.
Any help would be much appreciated.
For anyone who ever has a similar problem, I figured out that my issue was with the Mac Disk Utility I used to format my SD Card.. I tried formatting on a Windows machine and the recovery was able to mount my SD card again.

External SD card no longer recognized, how to get it back?

Hello,
Today I tested out the wipe feature of an anti theft app (was on JVO stock + CF Root Kernel). The external SD was not modified in any way (no speedmod, ext file system or anything).
For some reason, it failed (it did work successfully in the past). It neither wiped the internal nor the external SD card. Now the external SD card is gone (see below).
After the wipe the phone auto rebooted and recovery mode showed this:
Code:
Android system recovery <3e>
[i]standard options were listed here, the "reboot system now" option was selected and the system was waiting for input[/i]

So I clicked "reboot now"
Now the main issue: since then the SD card is no longer recognized.
The taskbar icon keeps saying "SD card is empty or" (the rest is outside the screen). Storage info says unavailable (see attached pic).
Any chance to get the card working again? I don't really care about the lost data as I backed this up prior.
Also tried to access the card with a card reader in Windows but nothing happens at all when I insert the card into the reader.
Try to make a folder called external_sd on your internal card.

Ok, did that and even created a folder inside external_sd. Now what?
It still shows "not available" on the external SD card storage space info. Formatting still does nothing and mounting card via the settings menu just hangs.
edit: copied over a few hundred MB into the external_sd folder. According to the storage space info it consumes space on the internal card so apparently that new folder is not really accessing the external card?
My external sd wasn't recognised too (but with MIUI), after I created this folder everything worked fine. So it would have been possible that it works for you too.
But don't copy anything into the folder, let it empty.
Sadly, that didn't do the trick.
Aren't there any tools or anything in recovery menu that could help me getting the ext. SD card recognized again? I can't even format it in Windows since it's not recognized.
Have you tried another sdcard in your Galaxy?
This is the only SD card of this type I have. :/
did you try flashing your phone ?
Yes, I flashed a few times (downgraded from Gingerbread JVO to Froyo JPU, then flashed to JPY and eventually via Kies to GB again, JVI), the problem remained.
I think you have problems with internal sd card ( storage ) If you have waanty you need to go to service, change phone.
Could you explain this further? What makes you think the internal SD storage is faulty? So far, only the external card no longer works.

As you can see, phone can't format /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 and other partitions.
mmcblk0p2 mounted at /sdcard . Can't format, so can't mount unformated partitions.
External sd card mounted at /sdcard/external_sd. If sdcard not mounted - external too not mounted. Why can't format? I dont know, or memory chip bricked, or some thing with soldering.
I'm so unfamiliar with recovery mode, thanks for these explanations.
So could that mean my internal SD may fall apart at some point too?
I think phone boot in this order:
1. First Bootloader
2. Second Loader
3. Kernel
In first loader we can boot usually or in Download Mode
In Second - Recovery mode to install update.zip or wipe data, cache and sdcard
I have a similar problem. I have a 4GB external SD-card. It functioned fine until updating the MIUI-mod. After that, only the internal 16GB could be seen by the SGS. Even when I went back to Froyo, the card couldn't be read anymore. It wasn't even detected. Except when removing the SD. The system says then that the card can be removed... strange since it already is removed. Connecting it again, the message goes away. I checked the SD in my cardreader on the pc. Working fine there. I formatted it multiple times (FAT32), but no luck so far. The SD doesn't seem to be broken or should I format it with another clustersize or something?
Try this, on my phone it helped:

But do not copy any files in it. Just reboot after you have created the folder and then your external sd should be recognised.

Least painful way of upgrading sdcard?

In a few days, I will get my new sdcard, a 16gb one. How should I go about switching it the easiest way? I run ICS and it's partitioned to 1GB ext4 storage.

Copy and paste? You really don't need anything more.
I backup old card to pc (copy/paste as mentioned)
then use sdformatter outside of phone to format with full erase and size adjustment on
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/28338566/SDFormatter 2.0.mht
this is a sure way to fully format card
then I put back in phone partition 1gb ext4 no swap
then copy back files from pc to card
don't know any easy way, but the best imo
If you're using SD-EXT partition and don't have access to Linux:
Complete nandroid backup in recovery (it will back up the EXT partition too).
Mount USB from recovery, copy everything from card to PC.
Power off the phone.
Remove the card.
Insert the new card.
Boot to recovery.
Partition the new card (1GB EXT4, no swap).
Mount SD in recovery, copy everything from PC to card.
Unmount card.
Full nandroid restore (it'll restore the EXT4 partition).
Reboot and you're good.
Just copying what's on your SD card to PC will leave you without booting OS and apps.
On Linux you can copy EXT partition contents to PC, and copy them to the new card after repartitioning. But if you were on Linux, you woudn't be asking...

Agree, a little faster way will be to backup only sd-ext from recovery and restore only it to new card.
BTW, new card is good time to get rid of old junks in sdcard. Copy only whatever is required.

That is very true

[Q] Cannot back up via CWM Recovery

I think It all started when I using linux to access the sdcard of my p970 2 days ago. I tried to rejected it safely but the computer said some error so I just unplug it anyway.
After that there are some unusual thing such as missing app.
Just then I found that the phone said "The sdcard is either empty or android cannot read this type of sdcard format..."
I used a card reader to check my sdcard but it is broken, so I do a quick format to it.
After that I want to do a clockworkmod recovery backup but it failed with a message
Waiting for SD card to mount (20s)
Waiting for SD card to mount (19s)
Waiting for SD card to mount (18s)
...
Waiting for SD card to mount (1s)
Cannot found SD card marker....
then it failed.
What should I do? I want to make a clean reinstallation.
try accessing to it by an usb adapter. copy datas if possible, then format. if you can't access to it at all, it means it's dead. if memory sectors become unreadable, it's dead.
I've borrowed my brother's sdcard...it works just fine.
So I guess the sd card is broken
In addition, when I checked it on the PC, I can do quick format successfully but the full format failed every time
be sure filesystem is fat32 and well partitionned (unique partition) . quick formating is enough.
if windows is dalaying the access to the card, it probably means the card is corrupted or dying

Android 6 and SD Internal Storage problem

Hi guys. It's me, the stupid guy who formated his SD on Marshmallow with the "Internal Storage option" and then changed the rom . I didn't know all the encrypted stuff!... Well, the problem now is that i have a SD card formated with internal sotage option but i haven't the exactly rom with i did the formatting, only an old backup (before SD formatting). When i put on the SD card in my Moto g with the old backup, it says that cant use it, must format all the stuff. So...
Is there any way to access all my SD data? i tried with the old backup, doing a wipe data... nothing works.
PD: Sorry for my ****ty english
@ch4mi

You can format de external sd using an usb micro sd adapter on your pc using a partition program, I used gparted and formated with ext4 filesystem. After that you can restore your backup, and should work ok.
