I went to Staples to check out the Kindle Fire HD. And there is something that really bugged me. When playing a video there was a small tab in the middle right side of the screen that pulls up the menu bar. This tab never goes away while watching the video from my testing in the store.
This seems weird and distracting. Is this normal? I've watched some Kindle Fire HD reviews online and they were playing videos that seemed to be in full screen without the distracting tab I got in the store.

EDIT: There's no tab when playing Amazon videos or Personal videos (this time they even have an app for it) or YouTube app. I saw the tab only when playing videos through the browser.

With the demo unit there was a tab while playing Amazon videos.
Hopefully it's just a quirky demo unit thing then, because that tab was annoying me.
You just have to keep touching the screen til it goes away. Normally you have to touch it around four times.

I just picked up this phone and my thoughts are mediocre so far. But I have one issue that I cannot seem to fix. On my android, I would have the option on either Youtube.com, or the Youtube app, to choose to watch the video in HD. I dont see that option for my phone now, am i missing something? It sucks to have a 4.3" screen but with jumbled video.
Thanks.
The stock youtube app isn't that great. There is another one you can grab in the marketplace that is better.
As for watching it in a browser, it was likely omitted to avoid having to keep up with flash updates.

But what about for HD viewing? I added a video to my phone that plays crystal clear...but i want to stream HD if the video specifies HD.
Did you download the YouTube app from HTC Hub? It can play HQ video.
So I use stock browser/ICS browser+ to surf. And watching embedded YouTube videos within websites is a nightmare. I have STICK IT! App or even YouTube app so I'd have no problem using those but to even get the "share" button accessible I have to click play which causes a big lag and then im frantically trying to click share, which usually doesn't work. If I just let it play and then click fullscreen within the site it lags and usually freezes and blacks out screen and doesn't play
To add, I have sites loaded as "desktop" by default.
Usually what I end up doing is looking at video title and trying to find it myself on the YouTube app.
What are your guys' thoughts on playing embedded YouTube videos? Lately its been so frustrating.
EDIT: I forgot what the final straw was that had me post on here.....after the you tube video freezes or bugs out, the browser bugs and wont load a page until I reboot xoom, even if I end task in manager

Try reinstalling flash on your xoom. Just go to the play store and look up "Flash". You should see something like "Adobe Flash". Uninstall it, and then reinstall it.
Hope that helps.
Was thinking about picking up some sale movies from the Google Play store now that we have the ability to show on the big screen via Chromecast. In the store, it says that HD is available for Android devices, and SD is available for the web. Does anyone know what format Chromecast will play back? Thanks

YouTube forces the highest quality possible if you cast from a phone, however, through the chrome browser on a desktop you can adjust the quality. I imagine it works the same way. Netflix pushes HD if available.

Google Play Movies plays in HD when cast from a Android device. I've never tried casting it from the web.
playback messages
When I use Youtube to send a playlist of trailers to my "TV" (it's actually a front projector), I get an onscreen message at the head of every trailer that contains a Youtube logo, the name of the trailer as well as download count info. I really don't want this extraneous info appearing on the screen at all. Don't know if it's being generated by the app or by the Chromecast hardware. Can anyone guess as to how this crap can be turned off. Believe it or not, this "feature" is a deal breaker for me. I'm using this in a home theater ... and I want to have as close to a cinema experience as is possible. I just want the trailers to play one after another like they do in a theater ... with out all the notices..

There's no way to change this yet at all. Maybe after Google releases the sdk but doubtful this will be something they will allow us to change...I understand what you're trying to do but a "deal breaker" really?

That was my concern too. Needless to say it was hd. I got this tv show free when i got my chromecast. (just appeared in my play movies app.

The picture quality on my chromecast was just awesome. My tv stayed at 1080p. I like the chromecast because i can buy movies and tv shows and bill them to my phone. until now i would hookup my laptop via hdmi but it was just 420p.
I think you'll be happy.
I installed cm-11-20141218 on my Nook HD plus. It's my first root. Everything went smoothly.... except in Google play movies it says 'Playback isn't supported on this device' when trying to stream my movies and shows (same issue in Disney Movies). All other Google apps appear to be working fine. However, I can download and watch or cast and watch, but both options produce very low quality images (I do have the HD download option set). Normally the Nook HD plus has great video playback quality. Ironically I can now watch 1080p videos in YouTube (but not purchased videos).
I was hoping that someone might have a simple fix.... thanks.

I don't watch videos there, but I suspect they don't work on rooted devices, so you need an app that hides your root status. I don't know exact name, you can search on Google.

Hey everyone,
Been doing some Googling and can't find the answer unfortunately!
I've recently picked up a Note 8 that is on Oreo and paired it with a Clear View case.
I've noticed that when using Youtube and I close the Clear View case it minimizes to a layout like the music player (with the title of what I am watching and play controls, etc), but after around 10 seconds or so it switches off and goes to sleep.
Does anyone know if there's a way to stop the phone going to sleep and for Youtube to keep playing? As it'd be great for me as I listen to Youtube videos a lot at work
Thanks!

same here, the "problem" is the app, you need to be on youtube red in order to keep playing videos/music with the screen off.
Try it for free the first 30 days.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-youtube-vanced-edition-t3758757
Or go there instead, no ads and background playback for free. Post 3 has the downloads.
Thanks for the answers! I am actually interested in Youtube red since I watch a lot of Youtube and I usually run adblock... But I'm in the UK and it's STILL not out there -_-;;
Installed the enhanced youtube app and it's been perfect! Thanks, JHFreeze!
