so the power button stopped working.......
currently the phone is on so i can use it. n i have remapped the g button to wake up the phone. but what if the phone gets switched off?
i have searched around some things to try to power on the phone....
but unfortunately, i cant test them as they might not work and i would not have a way to power on the phone.

I brought it back to the service center. The putting pressure method only works for a small time and is unreliable. Eventually my entire powerbutton stopped working and I couldn't charge my phone anymore. I suggest you bring your phone to a service center before it gets worse.

I have the same problem and I ended up opening my phone to see what is going on.
Basically, there is a bus (a group of cables) that comes from the power button, usb port and ear speaker and is connected to the motherboard exactly in the area where you apply the pressure, more or less around the LG logo.
The connection of this bus is done using a 14 pin dual inline package.
What happened in my phone, I assume it is the same in yours, the base on the motherboard where this bus is connected got disconnected, it lost the solder around the pins and the connection it has with the board is loose.
I will try to provide a picture the next time I open my phone..
When you apply pressure, what happens is that you fix the connection so the button works.
In my case, the whole base got disconnected and there is no way to solder it back manually because it is surface mount and it is extremely tiny, you can barely see it with bare eyes, but it might be done using a microscope although I doubt it due to the crowding of the components in that area.
What I did was to put some papers behind it to increase the pressure, but it was a temporary solution.
At the moment, the button works only with pressure, I cannot use the ear speaker (it is dead), and the usb port only supports charging and no data transfer.
I do not know why LG uses such low quality components.. but what can I say?
Be careful guys, it might get worse with time, make sure you do not let ur phones fall or receive hits.

I have the same problem, usb connector and speaker is ok, both are in the same cable flex with the power button,
the only way to power up without the button that i found is:
1.-remove the battery
2.-press and hold volume + and connect usb to charger or pc (the software update screen is displayed)
3.- insert battery, then disconnect usb (the software update still show up)
4.-here you need to be quick, remove and insert the battery quickly
after that's the phone restarts.

I dropped my phone yesterday, and the power button doesn't do anything now. It doesn't seem to move much, either. I popped a little of it out using the stylus, and couldn't find any wires so I don't think there's a solution. The button itself seems fine, but I think it got dislodged a bit from whatever mechanism (spring or latch) that tells it to turn on or w/e. Looks impossible to open up the device. (don't see any screws. looks soldered in)
Anyway, the phone itself works. I resetted it and it'll load up Android fine. I just can't get into Android because you need to press the power button to get out of the standby screen.
Is there any way I could
a) assign a new button in Android (say the center button?)
b) fix the button (or if I brought it to a Sprint store would it cost less than the phone? ($60))
c) get rid of Android and go to Windows without using the power button (power+reset code)

There are 4 Torx screws (1 under the warranty void sticker) essentially at every corner, so if you get a small enough torx screwdriver you can open it up

Is there any way I can reassign the button to the Back button or something? I need a quick fix so I can use the phone now for calling. Its probably built on to the motherboard because there's no wiring from the looks of it. Not sure where to find such a screwdriver, but I'll look into it.
I had a similar problem with my camera (back) button. It was a fairly easy fix. You will need a tiny Torx to get it open. There is a complete teardown thread on this site to help guide it. Once I had the right Torx driver, it took a few minutes. The switches are surface mounted and are held in place with clips. I had to bend the clips back into place and then reflow the solder joints with a soldering iron. I dropped some solder onto the clips to hold them together.
I tried to roll an alternate ROM with different key assignments...the build process is not well documented, IMO. I asked and was basically told to go make friends with a developer.
I have a dead power button that I think is broken or have a dust in it that can't make it work.
I have read several threads about it.
For example the phone is off and i cant turn it on by power button is there any way to make it on?
using ADB?
or using a CM7/CM9 ROM? (some says that if you plug the charger it will automatically turn on)
or any methods that you can recommend?
I can relate, it's becoming quite common. Mine is slowly dying. I have volume rocker wake enabled and touch wake also. My understanding from reading other peoples problem is that it should turn on when plugged in with ics.
But if you are not on ics then i don't know how you'll turn it on to flash.

Do at your own risk:
It's really easy to use a small( I mean correct size for the screws) screwdriver and pull the back plate off the phone and give everything a good cleaning out. You won't believe the junk you find in there. Chances are there's junk up in the power button. I used to have power button issues till I took it apart and cleaned it.
There is a guide(with pics) to tear it down and put it back together somewhere....
I've probably disassembled mine 3 or 4 times. Never had any trouble i only use 3 of the 6 screws to hold the back plate on. it's easier to deal with only three.
also you can use your fingernail to peel back the plastic by the screen and power button area. once you do this try your best to press your lips up to the phone and blow air through the crack. I use this almost every two weeks to get my power button to behave properly.
I think it's possible to replace the power button, might require soldering. I'm not sure, I've never needed to do it.

Okay guys so I know that there are a ton of threads discussing the issue of not being able to power down the Captivate. What I haven't seen are alternative solutions. Like if I broke the power button off the mobo would this tear my phone up completely or would it stop the phone from thinking it was constantly being stuck. I did the key test and didn't see it as stuck or being pressed yet when I remove and insert my battery it turns on. Is there anything else I can do other than paying money I don't have to fix it? I tried the CRC cleaning method like six times and nothing. Please try and think of other ways to fix this. I have MANUALLY remapped the Volume Up button to be the power button and when I select power down it starts to power down then vibrates and freezes. Also if the phone is plugged in I can get it to power down to the battery charging screen yet when I unplug it, it powers on. I know you guys are extremely smart so I'm sure we can find a fix to the freezing when powering down without shipping our phones off.

The crc method works most of the time for me. One of my Cappys the crc didnt work on and since it was a spare I wasn't gentle with it. I took the mainboard out of the phone and holding it I smacked the exposed button on the corner of a table a few times and haven't had an issue since....and yeah, it's pretty easy to rip it off too if you just want to break connection....On an old board, since the button is so small I just ripped off the button and soldered small wires to the contacts and attached an external button...looked funny but it worked....

Also, when I use the crc, I take out the mainboard and use the crc straw extension to push in the button and spray like that so it can really get inside the button casing. Then I tap the button rapidly off a table or a wood block....good luck, I know it's a pain...

I used mine no problem with the button pulled off of it. I turned it on one of two ways. Either with a failed jig I made that wasn't quite enough resistance to put it into download mode, but when I inserted it it would just power on the phone, or I would use a cable I made for dock mode which would also power on the phone.....As far as actually freezing when powering down, I have only seen that on one of my phones running gamerz rom. Usually when the button is stuck it just restarts after you power it off, but for me with gamerz rom, it instead was just locking up and the screen would stay on till a battery pull, or holding volume buttons and power button for about 5 seconds.(actually I just held the volume buttons since the power was stuck on).
In short though, if you pull the battery and put it back in and the phone boots up on its own, it is definitely the button stuck on.
Yes mine is stuck on and I want it to stop so I guess I'm ripping the button off haha

lol before you rip it off, you may as well try hitting the button against something a few times to see if it helps....you would be better off with a power button than trying methods through the usb to power it on from a powered down state. Besides, to rip it off means you gotta take out the main board anyway, so it may be worth a shot.....If you do just rip it off the board, you can find a thread here on resister values to make a usb dongle that will turn the phone on.
Just saw your other thread about a jig so you have the resistors and probably the thread too....If you have any doubt about resistors and about any other electrical components I recommend an app called electrodroid. it has a free version and is very handy in helping with resistor values and the color coding.
I can CONFIRM that taking out the main board and CAREFULLY prying the power button off or using small pliers DOES stop the phone from freezing on power down and I ALSO found out that my Download mode three button combo now works!!! So if you're in a pinch for money and your power button is stuck in the ON position and need to flash back to stock or need download mode to work. This is a great temporary fix. Then when you get the cash just order your button and have someone that's good at Soldering solder it on for ya.

Yes I have the stuff but I don't need it now haha as my Download mode now works. I read that builds 1010 and up DO NOT have the three button combo but mine is a build 1012.... Any thoughts?

Having a sim card or not in your android doesn't affect wifi at all. You can still use the internet.
I have my Galaxy Exhibit (II) 4G for about a year and two weeks now. Warranty period is just over. I used Stock ROM in the beginning and have been using CM10(.1) roms for about 10 months.
Yesterday early night I noticed my battery suddenly diminished about 60% in 15 mins. Then I had it in the charger later, and I think I let it fall one time, like that happens sometimes. Since then my phone has been randomly rebooting and then looping either the battery sign or the Samsung sign.
Usually I can get it to boot up again with holding the power button, but sometimes I just keep pressing everything until something happens.
I can get into recovery. I tried wiping everything. I have tried deleting battery stats. I have tried other (non-oc) ROMs.
NOTE that sometimes it happens in recovery mode too, usually right as it is getting into it, so it might be totally non software related.
Do you guys think my phone is broken? Or is it worth trying to buy a new battery?
Turns out the phone thinks its on/off button sometimes is pressed, so it keeps rebooting. If I press it a couple times it's over. But then then next time there's always like a 50% chance that it gets stuck again...
Did you solve your problem because am facing the same problem. I can't even make it far enough to boot into recovery

I'm stuck in the same problem, first I thought it was a physical problem but I had to get technical assistance of an expert and he confirms its rom problem. he's going to install stock again via some freaking hardware because with my pc I couldn't. Any suggestions?

Defintly this guy couldn´t fix it, he reinstall the previous t-mobile original firmware and nothing happens, still rebooting. Another technician check it and told me he must replace a bootloader IC, I hope it works.
Now the "new technician" couldn´t fix the phone. He told my wife that previous Rom (cyanogenmod unofficial)"must have a virus and it infected the boot". I keep thinking is a hardware malfunction. Any suggestions?
If you got the ROM from xda I doubt it had a virus. Have you tried Odin back to stock yet. If not try that first.

I dubted too, the problem is it can´t boot. I have the samsung logo, then it apears the Exhibit logo and shuts down, it keeps like that again and again. I managed to get download mode but the same, 3 sec after it shuts down so i can´t install anything.
Then ya i would have to agree that the device is defective.

I had the same problem and i use to solve it by hitting the phone from the back and after i let it fall accidently it back to normal

ok so, my phone was awesome but since this is vacation time I decided to try a new rom, It was fine but then it started rebooting all the time. HOWEVER, I was able to try other roms after several attempts and think it's related to the calibration of the power button. It tries to stay awake but when I try and press the power button, that's when the problems start. Does anybody know of a way to calibrate the power button? I think that would be the solution, in case that's even possible. If not I'll have to buy a dumbphone for I don't have the money to spare on a new phone just now...

This may not apply to everyone, but I found that after pressing the power button over the course of two years the thin plastic "arms" that hold the power button inside the case have become stretched and weakened. Went back to stock to eliminate every conceivable variable. It would continue to reboot even without touching it, with or without a case. Essentially, the power button is resting against the motherboard's power module, or rather stuck and wreaking random havoc.
I fixed it and haven't had a reboot this week by using tweezers and squeezing the posts that hold the power button arms in place tightly against the outer shell. The objective is to create as much resistance as possible and have the power button spring away from the mobo. The power button has rubber pads that, when pressed, pushes against the mobo power module, so to create more distance I filed down the pads a few mm's. If it happens again I will resolder the points and remap the keys, until then I went ahead and cleaned the solder points with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol.
Removing the outer shell takes some time to break the glue apart without damaging anything, so take that into consideration and move at insect speed if anyone considers this approach for the first time. The best reference I can spot is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3dAOv2Oke0&t=6m11s where the power button is on the right hand side of his right hand. I'll try taking photos or video if it happens again.

Hi, My LG P880 has a broken power button. I got around the use of it via the Gravity Unlock app but recently my phone died due to low battery.
I tried to plug in, take battery out and put it back in.
I tried plugin it in without the battery.
I tried plugin it in with battery and then take the cable out once it display.
All three ends up with the battery charging indicator after the LG logo and then turn off.
I need some help as I am hoping to hold onto this phone till my contract status is available for a change in handset.
Any help is appreciated.
PS: My phone is unrooted and without any modifications etc.

I think the problem here is not the battery She needs a way to turn on her phone without having to use the power button.

Without modifications there's no way I think. Adb needs drivers and Dev settings set properly to turn on the device from a connected PC.
I would also suggest to go for warranty if you're able to.

Thanks for the reply, though it does not solve my problem, it is still very much appreciated.
It's is not the battery, since it is detected when plugging in the charger. It is even at full charge.
Warranty wise, It is kinda expired since I am on a 2 year contract plan with my telecom which ends this August and I am sure that the warranty is only for the first year.
The phone still can't be turned on after more futile attempts and I had to resort to using a backup phone that has no data capabilities.. sigh.
Will consider sending it to a repair shop once I get enough funds though and again, thanks for the help!
What exactly is wrong with your power button? Perhaps you could try removing it and use something thin to push the actual button underneath it?

In my opinion don't touch your phones hardware parts don't even think about disasembly.... just take it to some repair shop if its out of warranty fixing the button probably will cost you 15-25E How much could replacing some tiniy button cost :fingers-crossed:
that thread is quite old though, but I found an easy solution. Maybe it helps someone out there...
you need some skills with electronics or at least with small parts and screws and I am not responsible if you damage your phone.
But anyway, your Phone doesn't work anymore and there is no warranty anymore, so why don't you just try it.
There are youtube videos how to disassemble it. but just when you got rid of the back cover and the electonics is uncovered, you need to pull out the flex cable that leads to the power button. Pull it out gently (it's not glued) and check it out. in my case there wasn't any visible damage and it still clicked as if it was working (but it wasn't).
Well, that click-thing in the end of that cable can be devided into two parts such as the contacts (on the cable) and a bowed piece of metal that is taped on them and supposed to make a contact beween these two contacts when you press it. I separated these two parts and cleaned it with an alcohol pad, afterwards I just put it back together without any aditional glue. Make sure it clicks again as before, also when you put it back in place and close your phone again.
Make sure, you do have a working battery. if your phone died half a year ago because it ran out of battery, and you didn't charge it again, the battery might be completely empty and therefore dead.
