Power Down Freeze? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay guys so I know that there are a ton of threads discussing the issue of not being able to power down the Captivate. What I haven't seen are alternative solutions. Like if I broke the power button off the mobo would this tear my phone up completely or would it stop the phone from thinking it was constantly being stuck. I did the key test and didn't see it as stuck or being pressed yet when I remove and insert my battery it turns on. Is there anything else I can do other than paying money I don't have to fix it? I tried the CRC cleaning method like six times and nothing. Please try and think of other ways to fix this. I have MANUALLY remapped the Volume Up button to be the power button and when I select power down it starts to power down then vibrates and freezes. Also if the phone is plugged in I can get it to power down to the battery charging screen yet when I unplug it, it powers on. I know you guys are extremely smart so I'm sure we can find a fix to the freezing when powering down without shipping our phones off.

The crc method works most of the time for me. One of my Cappys the crc didnt work on and since it was a spare I wasn't gentle with it. I took the mainboard out of the phone and holding it I smacked the exposed button on the corner of a table a few times and haven't had an issue since....and yeah, it's pretty easy to rip it off too if you just want to break connection....On an old board, since the button is so small I just ripped off the button and soldered small wires to the contacts and attached an external button...looked funny but it worked....

Also, when I use the crc, I take out the mainboard and use the crc straw extension to push in the button and spray like that so it can really get inside the button casing. Then I tap the button rapidly off a table or a wood block....good luck, I know it's a pain...

If I break it off though and put nothing in its place will I still be able to use my phone? Also if I'll still be able to use my phone with the button gone will I then be able to power it off with out it freezing?

I used mine no problem with the button pulled off of it. I turned it on one of two ways. Either with a failed jig I made that wasn't quite enough resistance to put it into download mode, but when I inserted it it would just power on the phone, or I would use a cable I made for dock mode which would also power on the phone.....As far as actually freezing when powering down, I have only seen that on one of my phones running gamerz rom. Usually when the button is stuck it just restarts after you power it off, but for me with gamerz rom, it instead was just locking up and the screen would stay on till a battery pull, or holding volume buttons and power button for about 5 seconds.(actually I just held the volume buttons since the power was stuck on).
In short though, if you pull the battery and put it back in and the phone boots up on its own, it is definitely the button stuck on.

Yes mine is stuck on and I want it to stop so I guess I'm ripping the button off haha

lol before you rip it off, you may as well try hitting the button against something a few times to see if it helps....you would be better off with a power button than trying methods through the usb to power it on from a powered down state. Besides, to rip it off means you gotta take out the main board anyway, so it may be worth a shot.....If you do just rip it off the board, you can find a thread here on resister values to make a usb dongle that will turn the phone on.
Just saw your other thread about a jig so you have the resistors and probably the thread too....If you have any doubt about resistors and about any other electrical components I recommend an app called electrodroid. it has a free version and is very handy in helping with resistor values and the color coding.

I can CONFIRM that taking out the main board and CAREFULLY prying the power button off or using small pliers DOES stop the phone from freezing on power down and I ALSO found out that my Download mode three button combo now works!!! So if you're in a pinch for money and your power button is stuck in the ON position and need to flash back to stock or need download mode to work. This is a great temporary fix. Then when you get the cash just order your button and have someone that's good at Soldering solder it on for ya.

Having a sim card or not in your android doesn't affect wifi at all. You can still use the internet.

[Q] power / lock button wont work

My captivate power button is stuck. Once i put my battery in it turns on i can get to clock work but its no use cause i cant select anything. Ive been running this rom for a while now and havent had a problem. Has anyone had this same problem? Is there anyway to fix it or do i need to get a new phone?
Thanks
What ROM are you running? Have you tried asking in that thread?
Does the button actually depress or are we talking physically stuck? You could always try 'adb reboot recovery' and installing a different kernel.
You installed a I9000 ROM didn't you?
Hold up+down volume buttons and insert usb cable while phone is off. Should bring you to recovery mode where you can one-click ODIN back to stock.
The power button is not replaceable on the i897. My advice is to open the phone up and slowly work the button with a pair of tweezers. I'd use a small can of white lithium grease and squeeze the smallest bit you can near the button to smooth the operation then re-assemble. Or if you under warranty, just ODIN back and send the phone in.
I was running continuum 5.5 GB, but thats not the problem cause i managed to flash back to stock and its still a problem. I had the back of the phone off and the button is clicking fine so either the button went bad or something stuck inside. I went to at&t today and they say no one on my plan has a upgrade available. So this blows, I'm gonna go to a customer service place tomorrow to see if they can do anything. Somehow i never had insurance on it so again that sucks.
Is there anything else i should do before i go to customer service I'm back to stock and i took all my pics and everything off of it. I also installed some apps and set up my widgets and stuff to look like it hasnt been modded.
You can always get a warranty replacement.

Samsung warranty is one year and the phone's release was less than that. Have you tried calling Samsung?

Oh ok sweet, didnt know it had a factory warranty for that long. I meant i didnt have a warranty through AT&T. Im gonna go up to the customer service att tomorrow morning, let them know it has a factory warranty, and see if they can do anything quicker. If not ill call Samsung.
Thanks everyone. I'll let you guys know what happens tomorrow.
AT&T has repair centers that can replace the phone.

my buttons were sticking to on my Samsung Captivate , it got to the point where the power button was no longer working and my cappy was out of warranty. I just decided to take my captivate apart and disassemble it (i used this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2y8mRCcQ4jo ) and then i located the power button and used some " CRC QD Electronic Cleaner " and just sprayed it directly into the power button (when i say "spray" i mean i pushed the spray button for about 1 second). After spraying it i pressed the button like 20 times, then i sprayed some more and while spraying (spray for 1 second) i was pushing the button about another 20-30 times. I repeated the spray and push cycle about 10 times (which means i probably pressed the power button over 300 times ), I waited about 5 mins to make sure it was "dry" and then i put the battery back in and test it and It seemed to have cleaned it out and now my power button worked. Then i put everything back together.
Note: I tried to spray and press it with the cappy with the enclosure/case/body on but the button cover blocks the actual button and i was forced to actually disassemble the case, its not to hard just looks intimidating. whole process took me about 45 mins first time.
Note 2: CRC QD Electronic Cleaner can also be found at most local auto parts stores BE SURE TO GET THAT BRAND as it is non-conductive, i repeat GET THAT EXACT BRAND/MODEL Cleaner, cheaper brands might be conductive despite it saying it is safe or does not dry as fast and who knows what might happen, CRC is a known well brand and has a good rep)
samsung captive
I did this and it brought me to the screen downloading and it says dont turn off target and the little adroid is shoveling..is there anything i can do at this point?

[Q] Some questions in dead power button

I have a dead power button that I think is broken or have a dust in it that can't make it work.
I have read several threads about it.
For example the phone is off and i cant turn it on by power button is there any way to make it on?
using ADB?
or using a CM7/CM9 ROM? (some says that if you plug the charger it will automatically turn on)
or any methods that you can recommend?
I can relate, it's becoming quite common. Mine is slowly dying. I have volume rocker wake enabled and touch wake also. My understanding from reading other peoples problem is that it should turn on when plugged in with ics.
But if you are not on ics then i don't know how you'll turn it on to flash.
Sorry i cant help more

Do at your own risk:
It's really easy to use a small( I mean correct size for the screws) screwdriver and pull the back plate off the phone and give everything a good cleaning out. You won't believe the junk you find in there. Chances are there's junk up in the power button. I used to have power button issues till I took it apart and cleaned it.
There is a guide(with pics) to tear it down and put it back together somewhere....
I've probably disassembled mine 3 or 4 times. Never had any trouble i only use 3 of the 6 screws to hold the back plate on. it's easier to deal with only three.
also you can use your fingernail to peel back the plastic by the screen and power button area. once you do this try your best to press your lips up to the phone and blow air through the crack. I use this almost every two weeks to get my power button to behave properly.
I think it's possible to replace the power button, might require soldering. I'm not sure, I've never needed to do it.
Hope this resource helps

[PROBLEM] Broken Power Button. Need Fix.

As the title says, my Note started acting up weird. I could barely power the screen on, and sometimes when I wanted to power it off it'd get stuck and reboot ( because the button gets stuck for a long time, thus reboots the phone) and opening the power menu's.
I only have to touch the power button VERY lightly to activate it.
My temporary solve is to wake the phone with volume rockers and I've installed an app to power it off. But if I ever need to reboot the phone or just simply boot it up, I'm gonna have a problem. Same with getting in recovery.
Is this fixable in some store, or even by doing it yourself?
Thanks for reading.
seems of a physical damage issue. take it to a service and check what they say
the switch is replaceable or u could remap the power button to the home button that is what I did with same problem
SEARCH ....so easy a caveman can do it

Is it hard to replace by yourself? I already saw they sold it in a shop nearby for €20,- so that's not too bad.
Could you easily do it yourself? Then I'll order it and try that.
watch some videos about anatomy of note on you tube and decide yourself
you have to remove the board witch is not hard but then you have to unsolder the little switch and solder in the new switch so if you are comfortable with soldering then it is not that

[Q] Power Button Not working. Plz help

Okay so my power button just randomly stopped working after some random time. it doesnt work ANYWHERE. to lock my screen, to unlcok my screen, in recovery mode i cant press anything cuase it doesnt WORK. i no its a hardware issue becuase of this. i did google this but found nothing. what can i do to fix it.
i tried a battery pull and putting it back and going to recovery to factory reset but as soon as i put my battery in my phone starts up. i can enter recovery but the power button doesnt work so i cant press anything.
my warranty is over by a long shot ( had it since it released) so cant return it.
any help would be appreciated. all i need is a way to turn my phone on and off nothing about the recovery and stuff. but if you do find someting for it that would be even more amazing.
and has this happened to anyone else, just wondering is all if this is common or rare.
thnx in advance.
it has happened to many captivates. search 'captivate power button' on xda.
What ROM are you running on your phone?
Answer to that question has a lot to do with your next steps for software workaround.
One approach; you could read up on ways to clean the power button and see if that works. Or send it off to mobiletechvideos.com and he will fix it for a reasonable fee.

i am running Aocp 5 android 4.2.1
hve been running it for a few weeks now and no problem till now
Okay, start by seeing if you can clean the power button, that may fix it for now. Again, search 'captivate power button' to find some threads about ways to clean it.
With the ROM you are running, I believe you have a version of CWM that allows to use the Cappy's dedicated menu keys, menu, home, back and search, to navigate and select recovery items.
Assuming your power key is stuck on, remove the battery, hold the up and down volume buttons and reinsert the battery to get into recovery. This will allow you to test keys, wipe, and any other function in CWM.
With the phone on and fully booted into JB, go find volume rocker wake in the system setting options and make sure it is active. Hitting the up/down key will wake the screen when it sleeps. Add the sleep/lock toggle to your notification bar menu and you have a way to instantly lock the screen without the power key.
If you still have a bad power button stuck in on position, then you will need to take out the battery to turn it off.
Hope this helps.

This is happening because your power button is stuck in the on position. Did you try to clean it as suggested earlier.
BWolf56, I'm not aware of an app or ROM that completely prevents power up on insertion of battery when the power button is stuck on. If there is such an app, I'd like to hear about it. I think maybe the power switch goes to the broadcom power management chip, so I don't understand how the app could work unless the phone never came on at all. SOD symptoms would be the result.

I had a very similar problem with my Epic 4G Touch (Sprint S2) - my phone would randomly reboot, and it kept getting worse and worse. Thought it was the ROM, the overclock, etc. I flashed back to (almost) stock, went back to original clock speeds. Eventually, I noticed that even brushing past the power button would wake the screen, and about 10 seconds later the phone would reboot.
Long story short, I bought a replacement power switch, soldered it in place, and have had zero problems since!
Several eBay sellers offer the switch you'll need.
(They don't include the skills needed to solder it in place. It's a tiny switch - about 4mm x 2mm x 1.5mm, and you'll need a good quality fine-tipped soldering iron and a steady hand. Do you have a friend who's good at soldering?)

Power button not working

I have the bulging battery problem. I bought a new Motorola battery and rear cover and when I removed the cover there was much glue sticking to everything. It ended up pulling the ribbon cable for the power and volume buttons out of the cable that goes to the phone. Put in the new battery, screwed it all together and now the power button doesn't work. I don't see any obvious damage to the ribbon cable so my question is this? Is there a way that I can jump the phone to start it and make sure that the phone is working before I buy a new switch and ribbon cable? I've looked everywhere and can't find a schematic for the phone.
Thanks
Jim

it doesn't exist, a way to start it without the power button. in the past, I've had nexus phones where the power button broke, and I did find a way to start them without the power button. I'd plug it in usb, then pull the battery out and quickly put it back in, and they would start. but the n6 battery isn't supposed to be removed, so I've no idea if that would work.
