I've transferred some of my own movies and tv shows that are in .mp4 format on the KFHD. They don't play correctly as they keep jumping from scene to scene and everything is pixelated.
Am I using the right format? I converted my .avi to .mp4 and they aren't working =[

It shoud be Divix codec format for example. Try to use MX Video player, its free on market. It opens almost all formats that i tryed.
mx works great with software decoder, i was able to play a 1.4gb 720p mkv earlier with no issues
Although its still nightly builds only, VLC will play pretty much anything that its desktop counterpart does which means it supports many formats. You can give it a try, get the latest apk from here:
http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/android-v7-neon/
Thanks a lot Spunker, VLC is the only player that has worked with least amount of issues for me
VLC is listed as "incompatible" for a KFHD at the Playstore. Anyone got an alternate source?

I am relatively new to android from a blackberry. I have a verizon galaxy tab and I have downloaded ttorrent in the market and when I download movies (so far I have tried avi and mp4 format) and try to view them they do not play with the media player and I do not get an error message it just goes to a black media player screen and doesnt play. I have tried implayer and arcmedia media players in the market and when I try to play the files it plays but with no sound and says I need to download coral player at real.coralplayer.com which apparently is a media player for a comp. Am I doing something wrong or does anyone have any advice on what media player to use. Or if anyone has any recommenda rt ions on apps that allow you to download movies and watch (preferably free). Generally i dont encourage piracy so i will assume that you legally own these movies (read forum rules). Bottomline you cant watch this movie until you convert them into friendly format for the galaxy tab.
Follow this guide: http://www.thetechjournal.com/how-to/convert-and-watch-movies-on-samsung-galaxy-tabhow-to.xhtml
It should play just fine, no need off a other player, the stock one is as good and even better then the one's you find at market.
Just be shore that it not have DTS,DD audio, because Galaxy tab can't handle that audio.

Unless the Verizon one is crippled, those files should play just fine as the tab supports DivX, mp3, h264 and AAC among the other things. Could be an audio issue, but honestly i have trouble imagining an avi with an audio stream that's more than stereo. Then again, i've seen some of the weirdest stuff, like an h264 video inside an avi...

I used this workflow to convert some of the Blu-ray rips we have on our HTPC, as well as converting a few SD movies, worked perfectly for my tab. Movies play in stock apps.

From a quick Google, if you are being asked to download CoralPlayer, then the movies you are downloading are not actually usable, and you are being scammed.
What application allows us to download paid movies similar to iTunes? I have an iPad but prefer to use my Tab for watching flicks instead?
Thanks for the info. After further te st ting the only movies that seem to play for me.so far are mp4 movies. I have been using t torrent to dl movies. Anyone else have any other recommended apps through market.

Dude you were so right...this is by far the best player out there right now! Thanks for the tip!
mobo player is very nice...one fantastic feature is that is sizes the video to the full screen. I was watching avatar on my train ride and the stock video player had it centered and not full screen....finished watching it wtih mobo!
thanks for the tip.
check diceplayer on market (GB required )
you can play 1080p MKV+DTS(or Flac/Ogg)

Here are top 5 Android movie APPs for movie lovers. You can use some of these APP to download or watch movies on Galaxy tab conveniently: " Netflix (free, streaming: US only)", "IMDb Movies & TV (free)", "VLC Direct Pro ($2.86)", "Movie Collection (free, ad-less version for $2.99)" and "GetGlue (free)". In addition, you also can rip DVD TO GALAXY TAB, but you need to consider the issue of legality. Good Luck !
Mobo player is great.
It now has support for subtitles within MKV containers without having to extract them. subtitles are great for foreign movies or for the hearing impaired and anime.
It also supports selecting audio track from within the container file. ie, Eng, JP audio track selection. I see a bright future for this app.

Moboplayer on the market works good u can try to play the video with that
Have you tried restarting your tab ?
I experienced those issues on DXJPE if i let it run for more than 1 day without reboot
this requirement of reboot has driven me nuts and started rooting and flashing endlessly.
yes, i also try the moboplayer, it's pretty good, and you can try rockplayer and vplayer, they are also great. but i find HD mkv files can't play on rockplayer, and play on the vplayer unsmoothly.
and maybe you can try some video converter, then convert your video to the right format.
My Tab plays ripped blu-rays perfectly fine (mp4 format). Look at signature for Tab details. I agree with poster above...restore!
my tab can play bluray rip 720/1080p mkv/mp4/wmv thru stock/mobo player without problem...
mobo is the best replace for the stock player which can streaming mp4 too..
Sorry for starting a new thread, but I searched and couldn't find answers.
I'm trying to play 720p mkv files and they are all stuttering in my CM7 kang and etana kernel. Youtube 720p videos are ok, but the only way I could find to play my files was converting then to 640x480 (someone wrote that in some thread).
Is there any other way to play these files?

The built-in player (and all other players usig "hardware acceleration") works for some videos, for some others software-decoders work (mx player has a pretty good one).
BUT, you will not be able to play everything on this phone. "Hardware decoder" only supports up to a certain specification and "software decoding" is limited by the processor (overclocking might help a _little_ here).

Weird, I have same rom and kernel right now, plays ok even in HDMI the only problems this have is with 1080p with high profile, or some main (see bitrate), simple profile plays good.
when i play 720p mkv files i get a little stutter and audio-video sync problems. A 720p mp4 files plays perfectly though.
I got my device today and loving it .. used mostly for youtube/play music and was able to cast chrome tab easily and also fullscreen HTML5 videos
However I got this trick from one of the site .. navigate from chrome browser to say D:\ drive. type this and enter
file:///D:/
you will see you the list of files.. by clicking on them, I was able to play avi and mkv files and cast the same in fullscreen.. only one of my mkv file failed to play (may be issue with codec)..i think the prereq is to install VLC player (who doesn't  )
can't stop loving my chromecast .. only issue is 720p setting in chrome browser is kinda lagging so switched to 480p , thats ok for now

I would do that but I have A LOT of files and it would just take way to long to convert them all also I would be converting then deleting the originals. How long does it take to convert the videos?
I use Ctrl & O to get the chrome file browser up. I can't play *.avi files (it tries to copy them to d/load folder instead) is there a workaround? besides converting them all to a different format, is there a reason why Google/Chrome don't natively play *.avi? It's not like I can't play the files using VLC for example.
If you click the down arrow in the upper right hand corner on the chrome extension, there is an option to cast the entire screen instead of just the tab.
@sungod88
It takes about 3-5 min for a 700mb file, by the time you watch 1 movie you should have atleast 15 - 20 movies converted to mp4, its a lot easier than what it seems.

Any idea why I can't play avi files in browser? I installed both DivX Plus Web Player, and VLC Web Plugin. I had to disable Quicktime plugin to get MPG, and at this point I seem to have everything (mpg, mp4, mkv, ...) but avi. I see the the avi file extension is listed under the MIME type for VLC plugin, bug chrome still just downloads it. My chromecast gets here today or tomorrow, any ideas about how to get chrome to just play the file?
Also, along the same line of thinking. How can I identify which plugin is playing a given file?
Drag and drop works just fine too..
nice to know you can cast local files. Anyone tried casting video from ubuntu?

If the audio is DTS or AC3 it won't play through Chrome. I believe AAC and MP3 will play. To avoid re-encoding your videos I would recommend installing plex and using their Web view to play the videos, it will transcode the video/audio on the fly and cast that way

I converted dozens of videos last night narrowing down exactly what works and what doesn't. The short story is only stock Android formats are supported natively and only up to about 4000Kbps bitrate (possibly higher with a MIMO router). These files will play using Fling (v0.3) from PC, or both locally and remotely using AllCast (v1.0.0.2) from an android device.
.MP4, .M4V, .MKV using the H264 Level 4.1+ codec
.WEBM using the VP8 codec
I couldn't get the transcoding feature of Fling to work at all it, tried with VLC 2.0.8 and 2.1.1. Someone else can chime in if they know the solution to getting transcoding working.

Leon said the whole transcoding part was very, very experimental.
The long and short is that like any other media player appliance, most times you'll need to transcode content to get it to play properly.
Things will get better for everyone once Plex arrives.

Just finished rewriting it to transcode into MP4 format instead of WEBM, but i'm at work and will have to wait till I get home tonight to test. I'll throw an update up once i've tested one way or another.
EDIT: Transcoding on Fling is still broken, I was able to get it to run with no errors in both WEBM and MP4 format, but MP4 would still show just a black screen, and WEBM would only do audio. Good news though, Avia and Plex apps announced today make this obsolete.

You're welcome. Also hope you saw that aVia supports Chromecast (can't wait to try it when I get home!) and there are bunch of other applications announced including Plex.
Plex announced it yesterday, but at the moment only Plex-Pass users can use it.
Installed the update, but the app crashed on both the phone & Nexus7

For .avi files I just use the chrome interface for plex, add the media to local plex library, and cast the chrome tab while it's playing the .avi file.

There was an issue with the initial release. Re Update to 3.2.1 and the problem is fixed.
As for what file/format works best....
Encode in H.264 Codec MP4. Keep the Video Bitrate lower than 4000. Should play well on any Video player that has CCast support.
Don't assume that because your Android device can play the file that CCast can. Your Android device has a much better processor than your Chromecast does!
And the variety of players available for Android play far more video types than the Chromecast does and will mislead you into thinking it will work!
