What is hboot? - HTC Incredible S

So I've had my phone for over a year now, am s-off and flashed numerous ROMs, but not quite sure what the hboot is? I am s-off via alpha rev and currently running 4ext recovery touch. I have hboot 1.09.1000, but some new ROMs are saying I need blackrose to flash, especially tpblake's new ROMs. Is this the case as not really keen on changing my hboot, considering I don't even know what it is!
Thanks in advance from a rather sheepish member

In your case, the AlphaRevX HBOOT 1.09.1000 is what is allowing your phone to be S-OFF. Another term for HBOOT is the bootloader.
In your case, you are running a modified bootloader that has the SECURITY_FLAG turned OFF, thus the acronym S-OFF.

Can I flash with this or should I update to blackrose as you say in your ROM thread

You can flash most of the custom ROMs with your current HBOOT just fine. You could easily upgrade to BlackRose just fine without losing anything. It is really up to you. What do you want to flash?

Yes then you will need to upgrade your HBOOT to BlackRose in order to flash the stock, rooted ICS ROMs I have posted.
Go read the BlackRose link I posted on the stock, rooted ICS ROM thread.

Yep all installing blackrose involves, provided that you have set up for it is for you to click on the .exe and it does it all for you. I for one was amazed by the simplicity when I finally flashed it yesterday. Not much to be scared of (I was a bit scared of playing with partitions and hboots)

[Q] Root and S off on 2.3.6

I had turned my Incredible S to S off and rooted. Will I lose them if I upgrade to official 2.3.6?

1. This question should have been posted in the General section. This is not a development topic.
2. The latest upgrade is Android 2.3.5/Sense 3.0, not Android 2.3.6
3. How did you gain S-OFF on your IncS? Did you use the Revolutionary tool? If so then yes you will root if you attempt to apply the update.
Since you are S-OFF, why don't you just flash one of the custom Sense 3.0/3.5 ROMs?
Thanks very much. I do not remember how I root and S off it because I tried many ways and at one point it just did. Which rom you recomand?

I don't use a custom ROM, so I won't recommend one. I am running the latest 2.3.5/Sense 3.0 rooted.

Please work on S-Off hboot 2.02.0002 without using HTCDEV

Hi, guys. I know that some of you are brilliant at making the ways to S-Off the previous Hboot. Currently, the Hboot from official update is 2.02.0002. And I heard that only HTCDEV unlock is the only way to gain root access.
However, I still hope that you guys can kindly work on making other ways beside using HTCdev. Incredible S users will appreciate your kindness.
Thank you.

The problem is that with HTCDEV unlock the S- remain on ON even the root access is possible (but I have to understand what is the advantage to have S-OFF)

One main thing with s on is that you have to manually fastboot flash boot.img after new roms / kernels

The advantage of S-OFF???
- you still have warranty ( in order to claim it, u have to re-lock your phone)
- you can flash rom from recovery app
- you can flash rom from recovery without pushing kernerl ( or whole rom dunno) with console.

I have install the WE WANT ICS v4 ROM without flashing boot.img and all (seems) works, but maybe is because the previous ROM was the official HTC ICS ROM

+1 for the 2.02 root + s- off utility.
I'd be really happy to see a rooting utility for linux, everything I ve seen so far is in windows.
Keep up the great work guys!

With the unlocked bootloader you can flash a custom ROM and then you can flash either SuperSU or su-3.1.3 and give the Sense 3.6 ROM root access.
Thanks !

There is a script that lets you downgrade your 1.16/2.00/2.01 HBOOT to version 1.13 which can then use Revolutionary to gain S-OFF.
The current script uses tacoroot exploit to gain temproot which does not currently work with HBOOT 2.02. That is what this thread discussion is about and in reference to.

S-off achieved.. what now?

Hey.
Managed to s-off my HTC incredible s with revolutionary, All works well and no issues. But what are the bennifits of this? Can I flash any rom made for my incS with out fastbooting the boot.img? I'm confused because some roms still don't boot.
Thanks

Yes with Revolutionary S-OFF you will be able to flash custom ROMs while in recovery without needing to manually flash the boot.img in FASTBOOT mode.
There are several reasons why some ROMs may not boot. If you allowed Revolutionary to install Revolutionary CWM recovery, then that is an older version. You may want to install 4EXT touch recovery instead. In other cases, the ROMs have specific wipe instructions that you must follow before you flash the ROM. If you do not follow them, it could cause issues with the ROM.
If you have problems with specific ROMs, then I would search the ROM's thread to see if others have run into the issue or if more detailed process may have been posted based on users' experiences.
Okay thanks, I don't use clockwork mod I had flashed 4EXTRecovery flashed with recovery.img. I will give a look into into it and play with some roms then get back to you. Thanks

S-off with different firmware / rom

Ok what's the risk... I'm running Android revolution ver 31. I haven't updated my firmware. I'd prefer not to have to flash a whole different ROM to gain S-off if in can avoid it. I know it's recommended to be on same firmware and ROM base, but what's the risk of just S-offing like I am?

But, wait, you have the s-off or not?
And what do you want do?

No I don't have it yet but I'm running a ROM based on 3.62xxxx firmware but haven't updated my firmware to that yet because I don't have soff.
Wondering if I'm running a risk with ROM and firmware not matching when I attempt to soff.

Yep, you need to be on the same base, and the closest possible to your own rom. Just restore your stock nandroid and you'll be good to go
