Recently my signal is constantly switching from G, 3G and H (sometimes full bars with no signal icon). I'm at work so not in a new poor reception area. It'll switch even if I move the phone a couple of inches in one direction. Generally getting poor reception tho.
What I'm wondering if whether to speak directly with TMob or whether it's a) atmospheric issues or b) something to do with my Darky ROM flashed modem (BUJP5)
I have a sneaky suspicion TMob won't help if they discover the phones seriously modded.
It's causing me a lot of grief
Thanks in advance for any advice
Well, I guess I'll sort it out myself.
It appears that it might have been a couple of things; Juice Defender seemed to screw up reconnecting to 3G leaving me with full bars but no signal plus the Preferred Network Type was set to Unknown. I've now changed this to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) and my signal seems to have stabilised (still a lousy strength tho)
Clue to problem board is littered with problems from one rom and thats it
.
Its the rom remove that before trying anything clean wipe and stock install .

For quite some time now, my phone has been having some terrible 3G connectivity issues.
It just drops from HDSPA to UMTS and gives me no data for chunks of time. And every now and then, the entire 3G turns off(as if the APN has been switched).
This has been occurring with MIUI 2.2, MIUI 2.3, CM6 and CM7.
Im using 5.12.00.08 radio (latest i think). Im unsure what HBOOT I'm running, but the full baseband version is "32.50.99.32U_5.12.00.08". So i think I'm running HBOOT 32 but im not sure. With the CM and MIUI roms the problem was occurring on stock kernels and monk's.
Any ideas on what could be causing the issues? If you would like me to send logcats i can(i haven't seen anything in there to indicate any issues)...
Also i found a post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931728
Not sure if thats related.
Seemingly the problem started occouring after i was using alot with WiFi Tethering with Wireless Tether by Lemons and co.
I'm using Virgin Mobile AU as carrier.
Also, the problems occurs before installing ANY apps as well(and afterwards obviously).
32.50.99.32U_5.12.00.08
mine is only 32.50.00.32U... IMO just try flashing a new radio, start with 5.08 instead of 5.12 and see if that works then if you are content then leave it... else flash 5.12 after and try to root out the problem...
cheers!
The default setting in nexus one is WCDMA preferred... i.e. it connects to 3G if available.
If the signal strength of the 3G network is lower than than 2G network,
it switches to 2G rather than connecting via 3G.
However, Its a known limitation that Nexus one 3G reception is comparatively less due to physical properties of the antenna.
So if we have root finally can someone tell me if there is any way to resolve the signal strenght problem?? It looks like Droid 3 has different perception of signal strenght than my Motorola Milestone... When my milestone has signal about -83dB it has all 4on4 bars of signal strenght, and on Droid 3 -80dB means 2x4 bars...
the problem is when the signal is around -90 dB... Milestone has than 2on4 bars and Droid 3 has 1on4 bars or is Out of service...
Is there any file in the system that manage D3's perception of signal???
Hope You can help me somehow...
When I got this phone I wondered about that myself. But I never had any issues with calls.
I'd say a new rom might be the answer, but hey...
This sounds like the same issue with Droid 2 Global. Try switching to 2G and see if bars "increase" so to say. On D2g it is more of a cosmetic issue, even Cyanogenmod ROM for that phone applies fix, so bar count is displayed properly.
Edit: on Motorola XT860 this works normally (compared to D2g it seems to get better reception too). For non-Verizon users, I strongly recommend this version over the US D3
To which setting do you put your "Set preferred network type" under *#*#4636#*#* ?
Mine is set to "GSM Auto (PRL)"
Also, TELUS doesn't have a 2G network, so I can't test that option.
My phone is rarely at 5x5, mostly 3x5 or 4x5. My previous Milestone almost always had 4x4.
You can also check your signal strenght over time if you check your battery stats and click on the graph at the top of your screen.
The first bar should be Green, yellow, red or gray depending on your signal strength.

I've had 3 replacements, first for out of service, then also screen and vibrate issues. All had the loss of service even with lots of towers near me. Usually a reboot fixes it but it's getting very annoying . Had a high level ticket opened with them and eventually was written off as a droid 3 issue and closed. They just don't want to help.

I am with Rogers and signal indicator is most of the time on 5 bars. I've seen it go down to 4, usually indoors, very seldom down to 3 or 2. I am yet to see 1 bar only or no bars at all (which wasn't at all unusual on my D2G
In that case, it must be a phone model vs cell towers (Bell/TELUS, Rogers) issue.

I tried to change it to 2G only and it works and it shows 4/4 bars... however I use internet so 3G/HSPA is my preffered network and on 3G it shaws usually 1-2 bars and from time to time it drops the signal... It has to be software problem because when I change it to GSM Auto PRL from GSM only and it was at 2G showing full range it stays at 2G but shows 2 bars... so another MOTO bug... :/ but i would like to find out how to change it...
Afternoon all,
I am running a stock D3 that is rooted only and de-bloated. One of the things I have been noticing is that there seems to be a serious lag in when my D3 is running in a 1X coverage area and takes a long time to go back to 3G. In fact I usually have to put the D3 into airplane mode and then back to data, which kicks it back in 3G.
Anyone else running into this?
Thanks,
Steve
I experience this on my xt860. Although it will do it even if I haven't been in low signal areas. Seems pretty random and annoying

Have you updated to the latest Verizon Firmware? Also have you done a *228? If you are having issues with frequent 1x instead of 3g and you know you live in a good area then you may need to call Verizon tech support and see if they can do something for you as far as reconfiguring your phone. Plus set your phone to Home Only for roaming settings because that may get in the way.

I was on MOKEE 4.4.2(release) for several months and had a VERY good LTE signal. I decided I wanted a little change so I flashed CM 11. I noticed my LTE signal was very weak. It seemed it was ONLY my LTE signal. Were I would typically have full bars on LTE (5 out of 5) with MOKEE, I would only have 2 to 3 bars out of 4 on LTE with CM 11 sometimes it would go as low as 1. I also verified with speedtest that it DOES impact my speed. After some research I found this is a common issue with certain CM base roms with no solution I could find. My question is for people that have experienced this issue. Which ROMS (prefer kitkat) does not have this issue? I can verify for anyone else curious that I did not have this issue AT ALL with MOKEE 4.4.2(release). I can also verify that I DID HAVE the issue with PROBAM as well. I think if we made a list of all the roms and how the LTE signal was it could be very helpful for people in the future. Thanks!
