[Q] bootable external sd card? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I dropped my Samsung Captivate. No obvious physical damage. but now when I turn it on, it is stuck in a bootloop.
I don't have a lot of android experience, but following the excellent instructions from this forum, I was able to install ClockworkMod recovery.
If you try to install a ROM from recovery, such as CM10, it just says waiting for SD card to mount repeatedly and bootloops.
I used Android Debug Bridge (adb) to run some diagnostics on the i897.
It looks like my internal SD card is fried as using the Adb shell command adb shell dmesg | grep mmc0 and returns
mmc0: error -110 whilst initialising MMC card
Am I interpreting this correctly?
It does not look like the internal SD card is repairable and the phone is out of warranty.
I have seen posts for other android phones and devices about creating a bootable external SD card using Clockwork recovery mode.
(see thread 1572924)
This looks like it could save my phone but I have no idea how to do something like this on my own.
Is there a way to install something like CyanogenMod 10 on the external SD card like this? I am way out of my depth on this
Thanks for the help in advance.

There is a CM9 that uses the external sd... look for it in the development section.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the only thread I could find was #1711150 [ROM][4.0.4][STABLE][MOD] CM9 with /data on the external SD (avoid EU bug)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1711150
Was this what you were suggesting?
Although it says that this MOD only works with phones with working internal SD, I went through the procedure anyways as posting 112 on that thread said it fixed his broken captivate
Went through the steps below and it worked up to step 10
1) Ensure you are on GB Bootloaders and you have a recent CWM recovery (tested with CM7)
2) Verify that the 3 button combo works for booting in CWM. Otherwise STOP here and read more about flashing ROMs.
3) Download the modified ICS: CM9.1 or AOKP b40
4) Download Gapps for ICS: http://goo.im/gapps/
5) Copy the two files to the FAT partition of the partitioned micro SD card using your PC and insert it into your phone.
6) Boot your phone to CWM
7) Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache under advanced
8) Flash Rom (install zip from sdcard->choose zip from internal card), it will bootloop because of the new mount points.
9) Remove the battery and reboot into recovery using the 3 button combo
10) Flash Rom again. Note that now the internal SD and external SD are reversed. (install zip from sdcard->choose zip from SD card)
11) Flash Gapps: http://goo.im/gapps/
12) After some minutes (2 to 5) ICS will be ready
When flashing the Rom at step 10 the display reads (I may not have this exact, trying to read my notes here)
finding update
opening update
installing update
assert failed
run_program ("/tmp/updater.sh")
==0
E=error in /emmc/cm-9.1.0-captivatemtd.zip
status 7
installation aborted
Similar problem using the aokp_captivatemtd_build-40.zip
Any suggestions?
thanks

[Q] Where do I start?

Just got my color nook today.
Trying to get my nook color up and running on a custom rom. But I am lost, there appears to be quiet a few ways to start and I am not sure the best and most updated method.
So as of now I am not rooted, pretty much pulled it out and charged it, I checked and its running 1.1.0 out of the box.
I'm going for the Phiremod rom, and I want to boot from internal memory not SD card.
Would really appreciate some links to what I need.
Thanks
lost just lost
so i ended up using autonooter
then made a sd card with clockworkmod on it
installed clockwork mod, installed a zip just like i would on a phone
and .... no go it wont boot to android just back to clockworkmod, what am i doing wrong?
also getting an error in clockwork
"E:can't mount /cache/recovery/log"
"E:can't open /cache/recovery/log"
"E:can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log"
"E:can't open /cache/recovery/last_log"

The errors are normal; since you don't have any cache or its not mounted.
You burned a CWM image on a SD card and installed the Phiremod rom from his Zip file in CWM?
Then you only have to remove the sd-card while in CWM and then choose 'reboot device' (first option in main menu) (sometimes you get back in CWM but reboot a couple of times and it should boot Phiremod CM7 off the emmc.)
(if the Nook finds a bootloader on the SD card, it'll load that instead of the internal emmc memory. )
too used to phones
hey thanks so much for the reply
that would have solved the problem, but i was running cwm on internal and using a different sd card
found out what was wrong, i was doing the wipes like you would on the phone
i.e. wipe data/factory reset and cache there
(instead of from inside mounts and storage)
finally up and running after 4 hours haha
thanks again
Just flashed a new 1.1.0 to CM7; no need for autonooter if you're going custom ROM straight off.
1. Download the SDCard-bootable CWM. Burn to MicroSD with WinDiskImage32 (needs to be run as Admin for block-level access if you get write errors)
2. Drop on your ROM .zip of choice.
3. Drop on the gapps .zip
4. Eject, insert into Nook, boot up.
5. TAKE A BACKUP. This is your 'oh crap' restore point.
6. Install zip from SD; install ROM. Do the same, install gapps. Wipe cache and data.
7. Remove MicroSD, boot NC. If it works, format the MicroSD card in your computer as FAT32 (after copying off your backup, under the clockworkmod directory), insert into NC, good to go. If it bombs out, redo step 4-7, skipping 5.
If you can't get it to load, boot from MicroSD and restore your backup. No harm, no foul. Keep a copy of this 'gold' backup on your computer. I forgot to do this and ended up blowing my original away when I reformatted my MicroSD.
Update your kernel
Keep up to date with Dalingrin's latest kernel, he keeps pushing the overclocking to new heights every few days it seems
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925451
He due to release a kernel sometime soon that can run at 1.3Ghz...

[Q] CWM cant install Cyanogen 7 - Am I missing something?

I have searched for a few hours and can't find anyone with a similar issue.
I have my 2.2 captivate rooted and unlocked with CWM and TB installed. Got the Cyanogen 7 zip install on my sd card.
Loaded CWM Recovery and backed up my rom.
Restarted and went to CWM to Install Rom from SDCard
It doesn't point to the SD card, however. It starts in the Internal storage, so i choose external_sd/ then the update file
it boots into recovery, formats the phone, but gives me the "No such File or Directory" message with the path set to SDCARD External SD Update.zip(Cyanogen install)
So it thinks my internal storage is my SD card?
So its pointing to the wrong directory, but i cant find an option anywhere to make it go through the right directory.... help?
sorry, mods please delete.
It is installable througn CWM,

Harder way:
Make sure you're running a Eclair/Froyo Firmware (2.1 or 2.2) and Eclair/Froyo Bootloaders!
Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery.
Do a Nandroid backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Optionally install the Google Addon (through ROMManager is easiest)

Try taking out your external sd before you flash, and if you have anymore problems post in the CM7 Q&A thread

Nook loads blackscreen (partition issues)

I reverted from the dual poot through internal partitions.
The dualboot was set up via this topic.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275859
After that I ran the revert dual boot zip and then used the customer partition setup from this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1094371
Suddenly, I could only boot to cwm. No matter what boot option I would choose, cwm would load. It would let me flash roms but I could not boot into them. I eventually got around this by re-installing cwm using rom manager from a rom running on an sd card.
That created a new problem. Every time I tried to boot, it would not mount emmc. I tried installing the rom MiRaGe. This had the strange effect of mounting my sd card as emmc and my internal drive as my sdcard
I found this guide and tried to restore my partitions back to original
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25354258#post25354258
I am using the cwm from that thread as well. I am back to booting into a black screen no matter what rom I use.
Are there any suggestions on what I can do next?
Sounds like you have your partitions pretty messed up. Go to my partition repair thread linked in my signature and follow the guidance there, including doing the partition 2 repair. Do not forget to format the partitions immediately after the repair zip is run.
That swapping of emmc media and sdcard is a setting inside of CM7. It is intended for users who have no SD and want to use emmc media as sdcard.

Thank you for your help.
Here are the steps as I read it and the order in which I did it
1) Flash sd card with CWM-5.5.0.4-bootable_SD.zip
2) Copy NookColor-emmc-format-partitions-5-6-7-8.zip, NookColor-emmc-repair-partition-2.zip, and NookColor-emmc-repair-partitions-1-4-5-6-7-8.zip, and update-encore-cwm.5.5.0.4-emmc-racks.zip.
3) Boot into cwm from sd card
4) install zip "NookColor-emmc-repair-partitions-1-4-5-6-7-8.zip"
5) reboot system
6) install zip "Copy NookColor-emmc-format-partitions-5-6-7-8.zip"
7) reboot system
8) install "NookColor-emmc-repair-partition-2.zip" (This does report success)
9) reboot system
10) install "update-encore-cwm.5.5.0.4-emmc-racks.zip"
11) reboot into cwm
Now that I am boot into cmw (I took out the sd card before boot to make sure it installed properly,) I follow these steps
1) Install rom and gapps (encore_CM72-MiRaGe-09302012.zip) It reports sucess
2) Boot into black screen.
Can you tell me if I am missing a step or if I am doing one of the previous steps incorrect?
****edit - I seem to be able to install cm9.
I'll report back after testing it out.

You did everything right. You may have had a bad download of the mirage zip.

[Q] Dicked internal memory (E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1); Now what?

Hey guys. I looked through the relevant threads that popped up before posting this, and none of the ones I hadn't already seen quite seemed to match the issue I am having.
The phone gets stuck on boot loop but I can force it to show the error we are talking about by going in to recovery mode and wiping the cache and factory resetting. Otherwise it just boot loops forever.
I have seen a few threads of similar issues, but they are all unresolved or their error is slightly different. In my case it is a
"(No such file or directory)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount SDCARD:"
I read somewhere it is possible to use an external card to run the phone whilst you nuke the internal memory and reset tables etc before flashing some stock ROM again. I have a spare mSD already formatted as per this video (he uses an 8GB partitioned 6GB fat32 and 2GB reiser, I simply have double both since I am using a 16GB card), but now I am unsure of what to do exactly. I can't do anything with the phone itself, so I am stuck using download mode or the standard android recovery mode (no CWM).
have a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30415128
Had this happen to me when I was trying to go back to stock from CM 10.1. I am not sure how that happened, but I just flash a bunch of different roms through odin and it solved itself.
Possible solution
Hello. I've solved the same problem on my I9000. Here are the steps I followed:
I've used: Odin 1.70; 16GB Micro SDcard class 6; XWJW5 3 archives stock rom, pit file 512, CF root for JW5; CM9; Devil Kernel for i9000 and HellyBean 4.2.2.
1 - Format the 16Gb micro sd to FAT32.
2 - Turn device into Download Mode. I have flashed the HWJW5 stock rom with 3 files (PDA, CODE, CSC) with Odin 1.70, including 512 pit archive and Re-Partition ticked (all flashes with the micro sd inserted in the device). Micro sd is partitioned at boot installation. Restart into bootloop.
3-After flash, Download Mode again and flash the CF root for JW5.
4-After rooting, went into bootloop again. Remove the battery, remove the micro sd and connect it to PC (it shows only 13Gb FAT32, the rest remained for the Android system). I put in the micro sd the following files to flash in recovery, CM9 + Devil Kernel for i9000 + HellyBean 4.2.2.
5-I put the micro sd in the device, enter into recovery mode and flash CM9. After flashing the device turn on with CM7.
6 - Once in CM9, enter recovery again, flash Devil Kernel. Reboot recovery again, wipe all and flash HellyBean 4.2.2 (I think it should work with any CM10 or 10.1, I have not tried)
7-I have the device running 4.2.2 HellyBean from my micro sd with no problem (I've changed the vold.fstab for mass storage). He's back to life. Then I have installed CM10.1 Gapps.
Everything I used to do it you can find here on XDA.
Hope this can help you.

Great advice mate helped me out a lot. But could you please copy down the text in the "void.fstab" file that i would need to change as i am sortof a noob in this sort of region :silly:. the problem i seem to have is that i cant access gallery or camera as it says external sd not inserted i am using gamerzrom which i presume will be the same file directories as hellybean "e.g. : emmc" for external sd card. hope im making some kind of sense lol thanks mate :highfive:
This is the vold i have used for cm10.1.
I have this same exact error in my Samsung infuse 4g... Do you think that I could follow similar steps to help fix my error. I have two errors show up before bootloop
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1

Any help or direction appreciated

[Q] Help: Cant mount my external SD card under ClockworkMod Recovery

Please need help with this
have searched for this topic but cant find this problem under gt-n7000 only other phones.
Jelly bean stock rom
cwm base version: 6.0.3.2
Rooting is ok. used dr ketan. got root, safe kernel(philz) and cwm (cwm base version: 6.0.3.2)
Want to make back up of my stock rom which is strongly recommended (read an articel: http://www.droidviews.com/things-to-do-before-and-after-installing-a-rom-troubleshooter/)
Want to make a back up of my stock rom to my external sd with rom manager. So if I get into bootloop or something I can access my stock-rom on my ext. sd
ClockworkMod Recovery will not mount my SD card (Sandisk 32 gb ultra class 10) and posts "Error mounting /external_sd!"
Get access when I go into myfiles app. Have moved all contants to pc. and formatted with my pc( here I dont get to choose any file system - only formatting. dont know if its ntsf or fat32 or anything else. After doing this I get the same result/error in cwm
when formatting locally on the phone also same result.
Hope anybody know how to fix this
Thanks in advance
