Problem updating to ICS/JB - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

first of all, sorry about my bad english
well the thing is that i have problems when i try to update my i897 to ICS or JB. Every single time i try my screen turns blue after the initial AT&T logo. I have tried several kernels/roms but always get the same result. I have made a video of the problem:
www dot youtube dot com/watch?v=wwMqqMJK7cM
Does anybody knows how to fix this? i have found a video of someone with a i9000 with the same problem
www dot youtube dot com/watch?v=rMStfVEOo6c
it seems that i cant post links because an xda spam policy -.- copy and paste the watch/ part on youtube to see the videos

I have the same problem as well. Seems it's not limited to i897 only. It happens with i9000 also. Supposedly it's related to using Nexus S framebuffer for our devices. Most kernels seem to have implemented that and therefore some devices with incorrect calibration data seem to run into this problem.
I even tried to use Glitchy kernel with CM7 and had the same problem. The kernel that comes with CM7 by default works fine.
I tried SlimBean and LANIGHT rom's also and had the same problem.
Hope the kernel developers fix this issue or release versions without the Nexus S framebuffer implementation. Or if someone knows of a kernel that doesn't use Nexus S framebuffer but supports CM9 and other ICS & JB rom's.
You might want to update the title of the thread to give more details of the problem and hence attract more attention from the developers hopefully.

[Q] video player problem

After searching around on xda forums and here, I've not seen this subject brought to anyone's attention, unless ive not looked deep enough. I don't know if its something im doing wrong or if its specific to sgs but when ever i try viewing online videos like m.tvcatchup or tv shows stream on the stock external player more times than not it comes up with video cannot be played. I had hoped that maybe froyo and subsequently gingerbread would have corrected the problem but on both my 2 sgs and stock roms on all versions and darkys roms have come up with the same problem. Id like to know if anyone else has had that problem or if its something a dev may be able to look into and maybe correct a fault if there is one. after talking to the mods at m.tv they assure me its nothing wrong with there side of things and they've only heard of the sgs having problems. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

[q] OTG on ICS

Im looking for a way to run a camera control software for nikon DSLRs on my note. However theese apps all are tablet software for android 3+. They run just fine on the cyanogen alpha, but that rom is too far from daily use even for bleeding edge enthusiasts, like most of us here. Thus, until now I have been forced to reflash everytime i need to control the camera with the phone.
Now several ICS ROMs have emerged, but those I have tested, though stable enough, refuse to work with USB on the go devices. The notice about the OTG cable show up all right ob them all, but they do not detect anything attached to the other end of it like in gingerbread and cyanogen alpha.
Is there a way i could fix this by copying some files from the cyanogen ROM over to one of the other ROMs? If so, which files would that be?
It's a kernel related issue. This means that we have to wait for Chainfire to get back from his vacation and tackle this problem. Or some other kernel dev.
Nothing we can do about it right now.
Ok, though i am a novice in the world of android hacking, that is not the case, at all, regarding linux kernel hacking. Setting up a cross compiling dev environment and moving a driver from one kernel source to another or compiling a module is actually less unfamiliar to me than trixing around with binaries from different beta releases. If that is the case i might be up to it. But that would only work if the source code, or at very least the kernel headers are available for the kernels used in the betas.

I guess the idea is to test your own skills in modding your phone and see, what the different developers would like us to have. After a few installs, you are hooked at getting your daily fix of new ROM and will suffer withdrawal symptoms, if no new ROM are a available for even a short period!!
Even if all the latest ROMs are not fully functional, they still add many new features to our phone.
I have become very enthusiastic about my phone again and I have had it for almost two years now. The longest time I have ever had a mobile phone.
What also is interesting is that you are able to try so many new apps, that only works if your phone is rooted.
So the benefits are many and if you are not satisfied, there are very good guides on how to go back to stock.
Good luck

Hardware Acceleration in CM9 for LG O2X is not working as of now (Needs LG to release an ICS based kernel).
Due to which:
- Video Recording doesn't work.
- Will not be able to play HD videos.
- Some of the system apps will start to lag after some usage (Phone & Contacts).
thank you . i hope the promised official ICS update will reach soon .

Ok, so CM 9 and CM 10 has the following problems:
1) No Hardware acceleration which means:
a) You CAN'T use your video camera at all. Now, I know that some says that you can use Videocam illusion, but that app can record only very low quality videos, which I found to be pretty useless (a lot of CPU use for that low quality).
b) Google Chrome is not supported due to it's need to access the GPU, but this is not so important due to other very good browsers
c) You will experience scrolling jittering. That being said when you will try to change between photos in the gallery (usually there is the bigest problem), or between songs in some media players by swaping on the screen, you will see something like the photo or album art is going back from where it came, but the result is good: changing the photo / song. The only problem is the visual one.
d) Gameloft games, and especially those with a little video at the begining will not work until you delete those clips from the instalation folder.
2) No radio application => no more FM radio for you. Wi-Fi (or a really well data plan) resolves this thing by using it for Tune-in Radio, a very good application for radio. I prefer to use it even on GB roms, because of the very good sound quality regardless the standard radio that sometimes loses the signal.
3) On CM 10 there are a few more bugs like no automatic brightness, or battery drain due to Wi-fi. Regardless all theese bugs, I found CM 10 from ParanoidAndroid to be a way much better rom than any other around here. Keeping the Wi-Fi off I don't experience any battery drain (more than that my battery last longer than anytime) and my favorite no data connection lost (I don't know if this was a carrier problem or not, but before switching to CM 10 i had a lot of data connection problems).
4) Not to be forgotten the lag on installing applications from Google Play Store. I found this problem on almost every single rom I've tried, and I tried almost all of them. I think I found only one or two roms w/o this problem, but being a maniac for the latest updates I've chosen the ICS and JB roms instead of a very stable one
5) No GPS working on CM 10
Now it's your decision. If you can live w/o video camera and gps and try to not get angry at every scroll bug you should really try the new CM 9 and 10 roms

I know this may sound weird to you, but: I can survive without any ROM.
It's not that your life depends on your smartphone, does it?

[Q] kabaldans CM10 nightly - some issues

hey folks,
I have been following all the Milestone development threads since the very beginning, and have gone through each inkarnation of kabaldans incredible work since CM6. Recently, I updated to CM10 (first without, now with 2nd boot) and am absolutely amazed by how far our good old milestone has come. While playing around with it quite a bit, I have come across some problems (I would love to report them in the appropriate development thread, but the 10-post-count won't let me unfortunately.)
First, I really loved the keyboard multipress-system since I live in Germany and have to enter Umlauts very frequently (ä, ö, ü, etc.). The multipress-system sped that up greatly. Now, although the corresponding settings are there in the Milestone-specific part of the Settings-app, multipressing actually doesn't work for me in CM10. Is that problem specific to me, or is multipress not yet fully integrated in CM10?
The second thing I noticed (probably since 2nd boot, but I am not entirely sure) is, that in the Settings under About Phone > Status neither IME nor Serial number are displayed (instead, it says "unknown"). This also prevents me from launching Whats App - it quits saying "Your phone could not be identified ....".
Does anyone else experience those issues - and/or could perhaps somebody please post this into the CM10 development thread, so kabaldan notices?
thanks, mvol

I have issue like this, and I can see IMEI and IMEI SV, but the Serial Number is "unknown".
after doing a full wipe, IMEI now shows up for me as well, but unknown serial and multipress problems remain.

You are almost at the 10th post.
Maybe wiping everything is a solution for that?

here using the shift and alt is working normally above 2 keys simultaneous ... not tested on that specifically, you will use more than 2 simultaneous keys?
with "multipress" I mean the feature invented by nadlabak/kabaldan that allows one to press the same key multiple times very quickly to enter special characters (like pressing "a" two times very fast producing "ä", for example.) It worked perfectly for me in CM7, but it doesn't anymore in CM10...
anyone, please?
It works fine for me. I use it frequently.
mvol: I still haven't found the time to implement the multipress feature completely in CM10. Only a few of the final bits is missing. Please be patient.
thanks for your answer - in that case, I'll wait patiently
Link not working for me
Hi All,
Im unable to access the latest builds for milestone CM10 by kabaldan. Please can anybody provide alternate link?
Thanks
Hello people!
I'm a long time CM ( 6 and 7 ) user on my Milestone.
After updating it to CM10 ( full wipe, ext3 partition formatted ), adb does not find my device anymore.
I have changed the USB settings and enabled the debugger in development, but nothing changes. Even after a restart.
Running on Ubuntu 12.10.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
The issue I have is quite annoying, if I can use such a word in a development stage . After each restart, the network is being forgotten, so I have to switch to the airplane mod off and on.
@pt0: This is a known issue, if I can say that. I experience this too, though not after every restart. I think it's a problem we can live with.

[Q] Haven't flashed in a while, help please

I haven't updated my SCH-I800 in a while and I notice that there is now a stable "cm-9.1.0-p1c.zip" on the cyanogenmod site but also CM10 builds (cm-10-20130714-NIGHTLY-p1c.zip) as recently as last week. The forums for the I800 aren't up right now so I thought I'd ask here if these CM10s are actually functioning well or if they have lots of missing features. And as much as I dig, I seem to only find half working ROMs or extremely experimental ones that have basic things like WiFi missing. Is there a solid stock Samsung ROM and a solid AOSP ROM that everyone uses at this mater point in this tablet's lifespan?
And is there a new method for flashing at all? Or is ODIN still the way?
Thanks!!!

I have spent the last week or so trying to get an SCH-i800 to run something OTHER than the stock gingerbread well and just haven't found it yet. The closest I got was a build of CM9 but still have sporadic reboots.
It's frustrating since the only thing I want this to do is run some OBD apps for my car. The problem is that apps detect Gingerbread and run in phone mode vs. tablet mode, wasting a bunch of screen space.
Cubed has been pretty much the only non-stock rom that didn't have FC's and random reboots. I don't even use the cellular feature of this tablet - I'd be happy just disabling the modem entirely and running on wifi if it meant it being more stable.
I'm considering just getting a Nexus 7, but the problem is that this thing would need to live in my car and I don't feel like doing that with a new tablet which is why I was trying to get the i800 to work
