Backup files needed for pre Mango - HD7 General

I don't have access to a Y cable or goldcard, I'm on bootloader 5.12 and on TMOUS. I've tried the Europe_401 method but no luck, I am not SIM unlocked, nor do I know how to do so.
I've seen a method that can get you back to pre-Mango using Zune restore, problem is that I just got this particular HD7 and am not on the same computer as I was in the past when I initially did the update on my previous HD7. Is there a way to get a copy of the backup needed to restore from Zune?
Thanks.

Look mate, the easy way is to make the y-cable, I did it with spare parts and converted my TMobile HD7 to a European HD7..., I tried everything, even the MS tool and all are trash, the Y-cable is the only option.
remember 1GB microSD card, the Y-Cable, and power (whether it's USB from a PC or the wall charger)
if you need more help, I'll gladly assist you.

I actually stripped down a USB hub and mated everything together following some tutorial here. I got power to my SD card reader and to the phone.
I was using a 32gb micro SD due to me not having another. I put the phone in USB host mode, connected USB, then the phone said Loading for like 15 minutes.
I removed the USB, tried again, but only kept reading USB host mode...the phone still works though.

Dream won't connect via usb

ANY help regarding this would be a lifesaver. I have called t-mobile customer support and they are as useful as (insert analogy here)
Since the last over-air update, more than a month ago at this point, my phone is unable to connect to the PC via usb. When I plug my phone in, it doesnt prompt me to mount but it does charge.
I have tried almost everything including: Factory reset, USB Debugging mode, formatting the SDmini, changing the SDmini, changing the usb cord, using different computers. . .I have searched many other forums and others have had the same issue but no results. T-mobile told me that NO ONE can connect via usb since the update (which I find hard to believe)
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I would like to mod my device but can not without this feature.

Sounds like you need to root now. You can mod your device just load up RC29 on your sd card thru a card reader and start the process from there.

[Q] SGS I9000M not recognized by the computer

When I connected my phone to the computer this morning it did nothing..No device unknown, nothing on computer, zilch!!! I was like let me do a master reset and format the memory card. That did nothing too. I tried switiching out cables, switched out computers, but same thing, the phone is charging but does not show up on my computer. I have another SGS that is detected on both the computers with both cables so I ruled out the driver/cable issue. Kies does not recognize the phone either. I have not done anything to it. It has the factory Bell ROM with 2.3.3 with UGKG3 firmware. The phone makes calls but just cannot be detected by the computer making it completely useless as I cannot load anything on it (Music/pictures). I am out of warranty so sending it to Samsung is not possible. Do I have a fried board? What are my options. The phone is not rooted and has never seen any custom firmware. Any help is appreciated.
I had that problem after I rooted the Bell UGKG3 rom, but you're not rooted, so not really sure.
I just rebooted my computer and it was recognized again.
You've eliminated all the obvious issues with the other cables and phones.
As for loading music and pictures, if you have an external microSD card in the phone, you could take it out and load it with a USB reader for microSD cards.
If you can load and run Apps then likely the board is fine. Try cleaning the port with rubbing alcohol and a bit of q-tip on a pin. They can be very sensitive to dirt. Like in that you'll see nothing in the qtip but it works again...
Also check if it is recognized in odin separately as if it is OK there it may be a rom issue.

I know this is an old thread but is there any news on this particular problem. My SGS have the same problem (not recognized as a phone in xp) phone does boot up an can load apps etc. fine. I can go into download mode and recovery and phone does charge via the cable. I tried a different cable without luck. Even tried to reinstall drivers and ended up reinstalling my whole OS on my laptop. First win7 without luck and now I´m back on xp. Also tried a friends desktop computer but same problem....

[Q] New to the HD7 and WP7, and need help!

Hello,
I just picked up an HD7 pretty cheap, and I decided I'd stick with it for awhile and start playing with it.
First off, here is what it is updated to:
Carrier: T-Mobile USA
OS: 7.10.7720.68
Bootloader: 5.10.2250.0
Basically, I have been reading around the threads for awhile, but I am still not understanding what is needed to put a custom ROM on this phone.
I understand that since I have a 5.X bootloader, that I need to downgrade, but is using a USB Y Cable my only option? Or is there another way to downgrade without any extra hardware? Thanks for any help.

since OSPL 4.xx and 5.xx are not supported by XSPL, at least currently, one is limited on how they can downgrade the Bootloader.
the method choices:
pre-Mango Back-up via Zune Restore
y-cable
a. Goldcard method
b. non-Goldcard style method
JTag
instructions for all, but jtag & goldcard, can be found in via the tutorial link in my signature.

i haven't ever used jtag before. you might try searching riffbox, it is a popular type of jtag.
Ok, thanks. I guess I'll just do the Y-Cable method. I'll hit up Best Buy today, and pick up my supplies. Wish me luck!
Alright. So I made a Gold Card, and I created a Y-Cable. I made the Y-Cable correctly, and the Gold Card correctly, but it is still not working. The phone is not recognizing the SD Card on the other USB female end.
The ONLY thing I didn't do is solder the cables together, I tightly twisted them, and ensured none of the other colors where touching, by securing each bundle with electrical tape. But I'm not getting any response from the phone in USB Host mode.
Also, is it possible to use the internal memory to flash the file? Example, what if I take apart the phone, and put the file on the internal memory card, can I attempt to flash that way?
Update: Still not able to get the Y Cable to work. I have verified it's correctness over and over again, and I have verified that I am creating the Gold Card correctly. I still cannot get the phone to recognize the USB SD Card, it just stays on the Enter USB Host Mode...
So, I've moved on. I read that if I SIM unlock my T-Mobile US phone, that I can flash a 5.X EUR RUU, then flash a lower T-Mobile bootloader. I purchased a SIM unlock, and have unlocked the phone, but I still cannot get the phone to flash.
I have all of my drivers installed, and when I run the Update Utility, I get a connection error. So I unplug, put the phone into bootloader mode, and connect, ensure that the Serial changes to USB at the bottom, and attempt to flash, and I get Error 294, Invalid Vendor ID.
So now, I am unsure of what to do from here. Any help would be great. Thank you.

[Q] USB Y Cable

Good afternoon friends! I have been trying to downgrade my SPL from 5.12 forever and I'm just about to give up. I've followed every instruction from every thread I have come across and I'm sure it's something wrong I'm doing. I have gold card and on my micro card and I've I believe that it is my y cable that's not up to par. It is recognizing the card and the phone but it's stuck in "enable USB host mode"! Does anyone have a custom y cable they'd like to sell? I purchased 3 different cables from Walmart, overstock, etc. and nothing is working. Im not handy enough myself to make one so the next option is to buy one. Please email me at [email protected] with any assistance. Thanks in advance.
Did you format SD to fat not fat 32? Worked everytime for me

This was an excellent step by step instruction and it seems easy but I am still stuck in Enter USB Host Mode. I have gold card, I have formatted the micro sd to Fat32, I've copied the SCHIMG.nbh file on the microSD and nothing. The phone just sits in Host mode? Any other suggestions? I am trying to downgrade from 5.12. Is there something I am doing wrong. My Y cable reads the usb card reader and the phone all fine but nothing is happening. I've plugged and unplugged a few times.

[Q] Samsung Captivate USB issue

Hello everyone,
I've done quite a lot of searching, and I can find almost no one else with the same issues.
Basically, when I plug in the phone via usb, the computer will not recognize the device. I have tried every mode (mass storage, kies, usb debug, etc). However, it will charge. I have tried several cables, including those I know transfer data. When I try to put it into mass storage mode, I do not get a notification on the notification bar telling me to mount the SD or USB storage. I'm not sure if this is a hardware & software issue, or just one of the two.
I work in IT, so I'm not new to repairing hardware or software. Just trying to find SOME leads. The guy who owned this before me didn't do a great job of putting the phone back together when he tried to repair the screen (has a greenish tint, thought it was a loose connection but it may just be defective or needs to be cleaned. Either way, not my concern as of right now).
If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated
PS I have tried SEVERAL drivers on SEVERAL computers, Win7, Win8, OSX Lion, Lubuntu 12.10
Also tried putting the phone in Download mode to see if Odin/heim-something or other would recognize it, no luck.
Wondering if the usb isn't fully connected to the port, and if I should take off the back housing, plug it in, and see if it works that way?

Other than charging, when you connect to a pc do you get a device malfunction message in windows? We know the +5v and ground work since it charges so if you get the malfunction message in windows its a short in the data pins. If there is no message, just charging and no reaction from the phone other than the charging indicator, I'd say there is no contact to one or both data pins. I'd look in the micro usb port to make sure the pins are straight (and there lol) and if it looks dirty, use a shot of crc electronic cleaner in the port (battery out and screen facing up).
Of coarse this is if it isn't software related which it very well could be, but sounds more hardware related to me....

Yep, that's exactly what pops up. I can't see very well right now (at work, have no magnifying glass here). I remember a long time ago having a couple bent data pins in my old BlackBerry Curve lol, ended up popping em back in. Hopefully, that will be the same case here.

On a slightly-unrelated note, did some browsing and came up with this quick question.
Is there anyway to root the Captivate on 2.3.5 without PC connection? (I can send files to the phone via an external SD, just can't use Super One Click etc right now).
If not, couldn't I just flash back to 2.2 using recovery(stock, but as long as the update.zip signed correctly[will be stock firmware so I don't see why it wouldn't] it should work right?) and use z4root?
Well, to follow up:
I see no broken or misplaced pins, it all looks correct to me. I will try to upload a photo tonight.
In the meantime, I managed to brick (I think). Accidentally installed the wrong kernel from my SD (speedmod, which I forgot was for Froyo). Now I have CWM, but I cannot mount via usb still, and since I can't access the external sd from cwm, I'm stuck either in recovery mode or stuck at the Samsung screen.
Anyone have any ideas besides just setting it aside for a paper weight?

Does that version of cwm have the option to flash from ext sd? Go to install zip in cwm and see if there is the option to flash zip from extsd. If so, then you should be all set putting the right kernel or rom on your ext sd and flash away. Not sure I'm the best person to answer your question, but I would start there I guess.

U can't get Root for a Captivate running Android 2.3.5 without a proper working micro usb port.
U can't flash back to Stock Froyo without a proper working micro usb port. (Unless u had Root already and then u could use Mobile Odin from the Play Store).
Only update.zip files signed by Samsung would work in the Stock 3e Recovery.
Stock Eclair had the 2e Recovery that did not require the signature verification.
Sounds like u need a new micro usb port.
Did u take a read at this thread...Captivate - PC Connection Issues...
If that thread is no help then it probably is a hardware issue. :/

1. Yes, actually you can. It's a temp root, but it works (how else would I have been able to flash the wrong kernel). I forget the apk I used, not on market anymore. I think it was like Mizu m9 or something, actually worked was kind of surprised.
2. Stock 3e is nbd now, I can boot into CWM 2.5.1.0 [which does have boot from ext-sd, but it either says it can't mount it or no files found. Not sure if its a version issue, if I could mount it and access the files on the ext-sd somehow this would all be solved and I'd love you guys <3
Yeah, I looked into the new USB port thing.I've tried every driver known to man lol. I think I'll end up getting the port repaired from that one website that was suggested, I think its $35 or so no big deal.
But can anyone confirm that CWM 2.5.1.0 can read an ext-sd? It's odd, because I assume on the captivate it gets mounted at /sdcard/external_sd, and when I look for a zip file to flash from the sd, I can see that folder, but trying to go into it just causes the message "no files found"
Gonna check this meizu m9 root method out.... hmmm...

Go for it, once installed it's pretty straight forward lol. But make you you dl the superuser app from the market (I did it before, just in case that matters). Mobile odin worked fine, adb wireless worked fine, etc.
But I just tried partitioning my SD card, and it still won't read in CWM. I tried mounting /sd-ext but every time I do it just says Error: can't mount
Yeah...i'm just curious as to how that root method works...since a method like that (gaining Root without having to use a connection to a pc) has never been done before with the Captivate since its release.

Gotcha, sounds good. Yeah not too sure if it's safe or not, was just trying anything.
On another note, what format does my SD card need to be in to be read by CWM Recovery? I had it set to exFat, Fat32, and ext2/fat32 and I still isn't being read or able to mount :\.
I was gonna say FAT32 full format as i have read that suggested by others, but looks like u tried that. The card may be bad...idk for sure though.
(Btw...would u mind attaching a copy of the meizu m9 root apk ? Thx.)
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I may try fat32 again. Interesting though, I had a zip of another version of CWM on the INTERNAL SD which I CAN access.
When I install that (not really install it, just run it), I can mount sd-ext but not /sdcard/ lol...says it's busy...I'm starting to think this is a permissions issue more than anything.....
Sure, it's on my dropbox I can just download it quick and upload it here.
EDIT: idk what's with the extension on the file, should just put it on an sd card and install fine.

The M9 root method did work afaik. That being said, it's not safe at all to flash with a broken USB port.
