Hi All,
I've got a standard HTC branded kaiser.
Where I live I've got access to a 900/1800MHz GSM network (for backup) as well as 2 seperate UMTS networks on 2100 & 850MHz.
I'd really like the phone to use the networks in this order:
850MHz UMTS (Primary carrier)
2100MHz UMTS (Roaming agreement)
900/1800 GSM (Primary carrier)
Unfortunately I can't make it happen ....
* If the phone is set to auto (GSM/UMTS) and also auto band, it locks onto the 2100 UMTS and stays there. UMTS>GSM. This is the case even if I deselect the roaming carrier from network preferences.
* If I lock the phone band to GSM(900/1800)+UMTS(2100) it behaves the same as above.
* If I lock the phone band to GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850) it then will lock onto the correct 1st choice, but it won't fallback to GSM
So how can I make this work? Ideally I need a band option like GSM(900/1800)+UMTS(850/2100), but it just isn't gonna happen.
Even though this is a quad band GSM and triple band UMTS phone I'm forced to choose a combination that isn't optimal?
Any ideas?
I hope someone can help me or at least point me in the right direction.
Im in the Philippines and my g1 is unlocked/rooted with the latest cyanogen rom 4.2.6.
The network im connecting to is smart communications with according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_network_code has:
515 03 Smart Gold Smart Communications Inc Operational GSM 900 / 1800; UMTS 850 / 2100
our phones have Modes GSM 850 / GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900
WCDMA 1700 / WCDMA 2100
So i should be getting a 3g signal or something but im not, my phone is not even making an attempt to connect to 3g. I have checked the settings and i cant find where to enable 3g. Use only 2g network is not checked. my apn settings seems to be correct but its not even getting to the point where it tries to connect to 3g. I have no 3g symble or edge symbol. please help..
help someone pls
Hi Everyone,
I recently puchased a Vibrant from Bell mobility, successfully unlocked it and was using it on Bell. In areas of poor connection whenever I used the data, the network would drop completely and I'd see the circle with the line through it where my network connection is. The voice bars will come back most of the time quite quickly, but data can stay offline for sometime then randomly pop back up.
I've found this happens the most when I'm in doors.
Has anyone else using an unlocked Bell Vibrant on Telus experience the same problems?
I've done hard resets, cleared out all programs, etc. I even went to Bell and returned the handset for a new one. I'm still experiencing the issue on this new handset with absolute no added programs on it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
Have the same problem.
The workaround for it seems to be doing the 850 trick. Call quaility is a little worse, but, no dropped calls anymore.
I think it is a telus thing, the way the phone tries to find the reception.
Hey kintap, thanks for the quick response.
I'm not experiencing dropped calls (yet), but when I'm using the internet indoors all connections just drop off and I have to wait for the connections to come back.
It mostly happens when I'm using the browser.
Was your problem similar?
I'll try out the 850 trick.
@meandnotyou are you also in Edmonton/Calgary area?
Telus people on GTA / Vancouver area don't seem to have as much trouble as you guys over at Edmonton/Calgary
that's according to the feedback found in the forum
Hey AllGamer, I'm from Vancouver.
I've tried changing the 850 trick as mentioned and it seems to have been ok since then. I'll keep testing and let you guys know.
It's not just a Telus thing... I'm on Bell in Vancouver and have the same issue as well.
I'm also one of those who are experiencing the comatose problem too.
I believe it's mainly a software issue where the phone has trouble locking on the signals. (I haveny seen any users who unoffically updated to froyo reporting these problems, yet).
edit: deleted.

+1. same exact problem here. On Bell. Lose signal indoors @ home.. experiencing comatose problem, usually when there is no signal. 850 trick doesn't seem to work for me. Re-flashed to JH2, factory wipe. *#272*imei# trick, etc.. all started a week ago. was working perfectly for 1st month. seems to be getting worse/more frequent.
anyone want to buy my SGS?

Wow that sucks. I was gonna wipe my phone earlier too, but read that it doesn't help...
Have you tried getting a new SIM card from Bell? When you did the 850 trick, did you double just that it was just the 850 that was selected? You can try what I selected, after selecting just only the WCDMA 850, go into the combi band and select the GSM 850 band too, that way it has a "backup". Hope this helps you if you haven't tried it already

Hey Louie604. Thanks i'll try it now. I'm a noob to Android. did the 805 trick work for you? if that doesn't work, I'll try asking for a new SIM card. When I'm outdoors, signal is strong and I have no freezing problems - only when indoors and poor signal. in Van as well.

Yea, the 850 trick worked for me (improved battery life while idling too).
Currently I'm testing just the 1900 band to see if it still locks up on me, but I won't know till I get home. I'll be posting my results in the comatose topic

Also, I should mention, when you're setting the band, make sure you do it under the service mode, otherwise the settings don't save (from what I read).
This was the instructions I followed...
1. on the key pad, type *#*#197328640#*#*
2. Select [1] Debug Screen
3. Select [8] Phone control
4. Select [7] Network control
5. Select [2] Band selection
6. Select [2] WCDMA band []
7. Select [6] WCDMA 850
After doing the above steps, just go into the "Combi Band" and select the "GSM 850" also... just in case it ever needs to fall back
Louie604, thanks. ok I think I may have missed something. In step 7 above, I have WCDMA 850 (FDD V) option under [5] not [6]. there is no [6]. As well, after *#0011#, I see that I'm still under WCDMA 1900 band 2, even after following your steps above. I double checked my band selection settings and they were saved. Does this mean anything?

Sorry, yes it it under [5]. (I just copied and pasted it but never paid attention to the fine details )
That's strange tho. Perhaps try this:
1) Select [1] Automatic
2) Go Back and then go into [4] Combi Bands and check to see that all are selected EXCEPT for [7] WCDMA 900 (FDD VIII)[] (It doesn't select it for me and I assume the same for you since you're in Vancouver too)
3) Go back and select [2] WCDMA Band []
4) Select [5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*] (It should then say it's selected and when you go back, it should be the only one with the [*])
5) Go back out to the "Band Selection" menu and select [4] Combi Bands []
6) Select GSM 850 [] -- When you go back after selecting it, you should see in the list this:
Code:
[1] GSM 850 [*]
[2] GSM 900 [ ]
[3] DCS 1800 [ ]
[4] PCS 1900 [ ]
[5] WCDMA 2100 (FDD I)[ ]
[6] WCDMA 1900 (FDD II)[ ]
[7] WCDMA 900 (FDD VIII)[ ]
[8] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*]
Once you see those, you may simple exit out and then check again. If anything you can turn on airplane mode and then back off or restart you phone and see if it's at the 850 band.
Hope this helps
Got it. Thanks.
Hey guys,
Just wanted to give an update. Since I did the band change using the 850 trick (same day I made the original post), I haven't experienced any complete network drops or comatose issues.
I am now traveling though and finding the connection to be lacking. I imagine it's because I've hard set the band, so reverting while traveling to see if it has any effect.
Hello experts,
Would you please tell me if I need a new modem (currently on T849UVJJB, assuming that's stock modem), or do I just need to carrier unlock my tmobile branded galaxy tab in order for me use pre-paid sim from other countries such as Hong Kong or Taiwan.
I have already rooted my galaxy tab and installed Overcome 3.0.0 on it. I am interested in voice + data, but all these different radios and talks of voice calling is disabled on the tmobile server's side (thus only network unlock is required to get voice +data) had me confused.
Greatly appreciate it if someone can clear it up, thanks.
To use any sim besides t-mobile, you need to unlock.
You will need to root your tab, then unlock it.
Since there is no compatable network in China the best you can get is voice and EDGE data.
Use a froyo modem.
Thanks rangercaptain for your reply.
As I mentioned I have overcome rom installed, thus I am already rooted. I also installed from the market galaxy_s_unlock, and it seems to be working (although I won't be able to find out until later when I travel.)
you mentioned it will only do EDGE, which I am dumbfounded:
-most Asia (including China) and Europe support UMTS 2100, known as Band I
-Tmobile galaxy tab spec page listed it supported both UMTS 2100 (Band I) and UMTS 1700 (AWS)
I am traveling soon so I guess I will report back. But if there is any actual report from users that would say one way or the other it would be awesome.
Thanks.
The word "and" is the key. The t-mobile tab has to have 1700 and 2100 bands to have 3g/H. Outside of US t-mobile service area, the 2100 band is available, but no 1700 band.
Go prepared for EDGE and be pleasantly surprised if you get 3g. It has worked out in a few places.
well, I am at Hong Kong right now, and here's what I found:
I am using hutchison 3G, JPE modem.
Yes I get voice. Data: GPRS works, EDGE works (though most of the time is G)
But whenever the icon indicate 3G (even with 4 bar) I get no data, at all.
Here the head scratcher: When 3G swtich over to the letter H, if it is above 3 bar I can get data! But I thought 3G and HSPA is on the same frequnecy and if it works for H it should work for 3G also.
That's because the bands for 2100 match, and the US 1700 band and the overseas 1900 band have a small overlap, so you occasionally hit the sweet spot.
Hi,
I have a huawei ideos (older non X6 version) and supposedly it is unlocked. It works with 2g/edge. It does not work with 3g. I have looked for APN information and the info downloaded to the phone when I connected to network is identical to what is listed on the net.
tmobile docs url not allowed
i had to add the MMSC setting since it was not there as listed in step 12.
Things which are odd. When choosing access network, it does not say T-mobile 3G. It only says T-mobile 2g, Att 2g and Att 3g. According to the net this phone supports the frequencies for tmobile.
gsm link for u8150 not allowed.
shows HSDPA 900 / 2100 / AWS
HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 / 1700
And
wikipedia entry for tmobile not allowed
shows
1700 MHz/2100 MHz UMTS (W-CDMA)/HSPA 4G (formerly 3G[31]) 2006 2008 (3G), 2010 (Marketed as 4G) First carrier in the U.S. to deploy services on AWS frequencies. Markets HSPA+ as "4G". UMTS band IV
Not sure if HSPDA spec is same as HSPA though.
I did the trick where you enter #*#*4636*#*#* and checked phone settings. I changed to GSM auto (PRL). I also tried to hit menu and select radio band, but it pulls up an empty "Set GSM/UMTS Band" dialog. There is nothing to select.
I guess my question is, does this phone support 3G for t-mobile and if so, what setting am I missing?
thanks in advance.
John
