One of the big issues when developing custom ROMs seem to documentation regarding SOC and drivers or rather the lack thereof. How does intel stack up in this regard. The Lava Xolo has been out for a while, but i have no clue how much development was done for that phone. Considering the fact that the vanilla Razr M is locked down will the Razr get any ROM support without help from the american community?
Well unlike all previous Intel android phones, this one has an unlockable boot loader, so that should help...

So I am trying to learn some about how android works. I am interested in how it works with the hardware. I am not a developer or interested in porting android to another device, but as I look at the hardware specs of say the Touch Pro2 and the hero, they are similar and the chipsets are close (same family). Recently i read that the CEO of HTC said he will not make a Android version of the TP2, so my question is this:
What is special about the hardware of the android device that it runs android, but the TP2 cannot? I know that people have been working on porting Android to other WinMo devices, but with limited success. So what is the stumbling block?
I'm just curious about this topic and was hoping some of the smart folks from XDA would know.
I believe that much like computer hardware, each component requires drivers, and those need to be written for WinMo devices. In the alpine section they've been port WinMo 5, but couldn't due to lack of drivers.
Also all WinMo devices are resistive, Android (up until 1.6) was all capacitive, which I believe is another issue.
Anyway, the Droid is better than the TP2 =P
I know that owners of the HTC HD2 are able to dual boot WP7 and Android on their phones--is it possible for this to be done on the Bionic?
IOS5?
I really just want to do this in order to show off my phone to all of my Apple fanboy friends. I also love the WP7 interface, and want to know if it's possible to get the real thing, not just Launcher7.
I've done some research and found a few projects dedicated to doing this, but no mention of phone compatibility, and nothing I would risk putting on my phone without some verification.
Part of the reason the HD2 was chosen for that was due to the large amount of hardware it shared with the EVO 4G. Also, HTC uses mostly stock Qualcomm parts in their phones. With the Bionic it would be more difficult, since Motorola doesn't make any WP7 phones, but since both are written to run on ARM CPUs it's theoretically possible. The hardest part would be drivers for the LTE modem, which is a proprietary Motorola part, and for the touchscreen. It would be a significant undertaking to say the least.
No. Windows Phone and iOS are closed source. There's no adapting them to the Bionic.

just thought id share it in here guys. even if you dont think its relevant to you, since you dont flash roms (which is unlikely, because you would not be in xda..lol ), still sign it ! its important stuff, especially if we want a good ics rom.
cheers

Note from Nvidia about drivers
Hello Android Development Community
We appreciate all the interest and passion surrounding the NVIDIA Tegra Platform and we take our support for the development community seriously. NVIDIA has been working with Google and Motorola to provide the open source community with the required drivers and other binary code to build full Android OS images for the Tegra 2 powered "Motorola Xoom". We expect Google to make those components available as part of the Android Open Source Project soon.
In addition, NVIDIA is working on a full release of Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) for our Tegra 2 Dual Core and Tegra 3 Quad Core reference devices to be made available early next year. This release package will comprise of binary code, drivers developed on our reference platforms and any patches necessary to ensure stability & performance with ICS. We hope the open source community can leverage this release for their work on all Tegra devices.

These petitions are of no use. The only option we have is to wait.
i know i know... online petitions dont accomplish anything.. but i guess im just a bit desperate.
ive seen that statement and what troubles me is that it mainly concerns xoom which is actually using a different kind of tegra2, ventenara or sth like that whereas 2x has harmony tegra 2, so if nvidia releases drivers for xoom, we wont have much use of them
Hi Guys
I am a big Fan of Intel and love the fact that I can now get an Intel phone.
Till now i have held off buying one because the one before Motorola X890 was the Orange San something phone, which was un-unlockable, un-rootable etc.
Currently the community for Moto X890 is small, not many developers to bring custom roms or to give a lot of support.
So I am still a little concirned, if i get the x890 is it easy to root?
is the "ARM app translator" good enough to give good performance?
Is it easily un lockable?
Do you think its a phone for just early adopters, until newer models come out which maybe more popular and have a bigger community?
Thanks
You exactly pointed out the arguments for my decision not to buy this phone.
What I like:
- the size (best fit of screen size compared to overall size)
- very good looking
- not a plastic toy
- battery capacity
- speed
What I dislike:
- no gyroscope
- no glonass support
- screen appears sometimes blurry
What I'm afraid of:
- according to experience long time to get next 4.1 update (4.2 ?) from manufacturer
- small community for custom develepment
I would say for people who simply use their phone, the razr i is a very good choice. For people like me, who want to play around with customs roms and functionality, it's probably not the best choice. Therefore I decided for me, not to go with Motorola.

I've bought RAZRI recently. As every device it has pros and cons. In my opinion main pros are:
- fast processor which delivers smooth experience especially regarding everyday use,
- S-AMOLED screen useful enough even in bright environment with reasonable energy consuption,
- 2Ah battery which serve well the purpose and enable 2 days of average use,
- rough construction with last Gorilla Glass technology,
- Motorola's HW reflected its long experience period and great position in the industry,
- superb picture and voice in all applications,
- limited bloatware preinstalled,
- price considering that RAZRI is in fact hi level phone with some limitations as:
- Motorola offers possibility to unlock RAZRI's bootloader but you must apply for the key and after receiving the key your warranty is void,
- and that's not all:
following its user hostile policy indicated in previous development Motorola implemented track regarding rooting the phone (regardless of locked or unlocked bootloader) into stock recovery menu which is not removable yet,
besides Motorola removed voip from the ICS system and implement defective tethering and VPN,
- those limitations are implemented regardless of contracted or contract free relationship. I believe that at least Motorola clearly indicated that it intends to implement those restrictions in all future devices. We have yet to see what the others producers are up to regarding this issue.
Otherwise Intel processor performs well and I haven't found any limitations or malfunctions which could be blamed on the processor. Navigation, sensors, internet, video, audio, etc work well, fast and smooth.
The community of RAZRI is small but it is growing. Some of members, especially mattlgroff expresses excellent skills in development therefore we can expect custom ROMs soon.
As it is claims in forums unlocking the bootloader and rooting should not be the problem. I decided that I'd wait with rooting and firstly upgrade the phone with stock Jelly Bean.
I had Defy+ before too and I'm aware that such perfect community and development as could be experienced with this phone could not be expected for RAZRI soon.
Hope that I help to make your decision easier.
So here is an article about Exynos on other OEM Devices
According to this, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo may use Exynos chips in future. Xiaomi was really good for Development because of the inclusion of Fastboot mode of Snapdragon with Primary Bootloader with Fastboot EDL ( Emergency Download Mode ) so hard bricking the device was really unlikely. Lately due to security vulnerabilities, the EDL modes are getting locked too. Now as for Mediatek, the closed source chips are kinda useless for anything other than porting from another similar SoC Phone. I couldn't come across much info about Exynos based devices. The flagships have some Custom ROM presence but most of the Galaxy A series are useless after 2 years even if Samsung was kind enough to provide update because of lack of Custom ROMs.
Since you guys now own one is familiar with it's development, How's your experience so far? Do you guys face any issue? Is there a way to prevent hard bricking like the EDL mode on Qualcomm devices? Back when I owned a Galaxy Odin Mode was a big thing, Does it still exist?
Sorry for asking such a general question here.
I think this phone is problematic too about development, i bought this phone last year still thers no working recovery or enough custom rom, i faced very much problem with theese. If u cant live without custom roms, i dont suggets you to buy any samsung phone, at least m31.
