Hey guys,
I think some of us have a problem with our headphone sockets where over time, slight bumps to the connection causes the audio to slightly cut out which can be annoying if you're listening to music with your phone in your pocket through headphones/earphones.
Now I've found a guide to disassemble the phone which i'll leave at the bottom as not to ruin the continuity, but I'm struggling to find a suitable replacement part for the output socket on the phone. You have to remember that the socket also needs metal contacts inside it for the microphone input. I plan to shoot motorola's technical team an email about it but I'm wondering if there are any other people keen on fixing the problem or if they themselves have tried addressing it.
Cheers,
Ed
Disassemble your droid/milestone:

Something which is close but not quite what i'm looking for:
http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PS0133
seems interesting.
I've had to send my phone in twice because of this.
Might have this problem fixed now though as i've gotten angled headphones that are really close to the socket. This way there won't be as much pressure on the socket when i've got the phone in my pocket whilst cycling.
hmm... been a long time since I´ve tinkered with any jack-sockets (last time on one of my bass guitars), but shouldn´t you just be able to -probably more of a temporary fix- bend the contact-latches inside the socket a bit so they press "harder" against the headphone jack when it is plugged in?
that way, they should allow for more movement of the jack (which is the problem you are describing) without losing contact.
the only problem is, repeated usage of the socket will eventually wear the contact latches out again over time...
Through the course of my research I've actually found a really simple and easy quick fix which works really well.
Spray a bit of WD40 into the socket and abrakadabra! it works!

Really? Why does this work? Does the WD40 conduct the signal? How often do you need to do this?

Bad idea. Don't use WD40. It will eat away at the plastic and circuit board. It also will attract dust and dirt. Electrical contact cleaner is a better idea. It's safe for circuit boards and plastics.

Where do we get this stuff? My current milestone is fine...but for how long? My first unit's headphone jack was very bad after a few months.

Any hardware or electronics store should have it; Radio Shack, Walmart, etc.

In China, that part (original) is about 2RMB - say $0.30 US - but shipping it will cost far more than that...
The Motorola P/N is 0976622A01, and googling it seems to produce a few hits:
You will need to find the links yourself, since the board prohibited me from postiing them...

the board is prohibiting links??? or only certain links?
however, i would appreciate some more hints on that disassembly-guide you were pointing at, since i cannot find that, either.

Have you tried the electrical contact cleaner post yet? Someone says WD-40 works (Which is a terrible idea, hence trying electrical contact cleaner). They aren't cheap and it's worth a shot before taking your phone apart!
Thanks! This is great!

this may work, but I have found on the portable devices it is normally more the circuit board it is connected to. The solder joint fails and really needs to be re-soldered. The connection is only supported by the solder, not a good thing, but all the electronics manufacturers only care if they last past the initial warranty. Often all it needs is a hit with a low power solder gun to re-flow the joint, other times you need to clean off the old solder, and put on some new. the joint will often look fine to the naked eye, but if you look with magnification you will see the joint has cracks. A friend of mine is an electronics repair geek, and he can see it just by glancing. I need some magnification, funny thing is he wears glasses that are almost an inch thick, so it is more experience at looking at them.
Thanks for the links. My audio jack has been bad for some time and it is only a matter of time until the frustration will drive me to take the phone apart. It is better now I have some instructions for when that time comes
I tried contact cleaner which unfortunatly didn't have any effect. It 'feels' like a bad solder joint but obviously I can't tell for sure until it is apart.
The male pins on the bottom on my Touchpad are broken (fell while it had a charging cable in it and of course landed right on the cable/port)
I can charge with a Touchstone charger just fine, but I want to use things like AcmeInstaller v3 and AcmeUninstaller, so I have a few questions:
1) I've looked at videos of how to take it apart (it's not under warranty anymore). Does anyone have experience with this and can relate to me how hard it actually is?
2) Does anyone have or know where I can find the USB port/daughter board that goes inside? I know it can be replaced, and I can find broken Touchpads on eBay but thought I would ask here first.
3) Is there a way to use Acmeuninstaller and AcmeInstaller v3 without being plugged into the computer via USB? (I'm figuring the answer is 'no' but figured it can't hurt to ask)
Thanks in advance for any help!
Re question 1 replacing USB board , there is a step by step guide with photographs in the iFixit app available in play store or from there website.
Thanks sstar! Found the guide here, now just have to find the part or a broken Touchpad on the cheap
Yeah, its super easy to remove. Parts, not so easy to find...

Opening it is easy but still terrible. The clips are horrible, I ended up breaking nearly all of mine.
That's what I'm worried about. Any tips? How do you keep yours together now?

Omg... just looked at that link for how to do it, and that's terrible. Lol. I use butter knifes and can still do a more sensible job of it. You can release the clips even before you pry up.

Hey, recently my headphones would be recognized and then not recognized if I move the wire or from just simply walking. At first, I thought my headphones broke, but from experimenting with several pairs, I've come to the conclusion that it is my jack that Is broken. I tried lifting the metal piece that detects headphones, however it did not work as the problem still arises...Any way I could get this working again?

Take apart the phone, buy a replacement from eBay and put it in but don't rip any flex ribbon cables. Or if you are under warranty just have T-Mobile replace it

You can try Samsung direct. They are pretty good about standing behind devices but cost will be about 50.00 and shipped at your expense to their Texas location.

Hmmm I might consider that...Thank you!
This happened to my laptop's headphone jack. Someone said that the jack may have oxidized. The fix was to take a cotton swab and dip it in rubbing alcohol and then kinda scrub the jack.
Careful if trying alcohol with cotton qtip. The alcohol will remove corrosive build up but also does drying of parts it comes in contact with. There is a contact cleaner that's cheep enough for this at most electronic stores and certianly all radio shacks.

Hiya,
Having bent my headphone port cover when I dropped the phone, I just ordered a replacement from Rounded.
My question is pretty simple - how do I go about fitting it?
Cheers for any help or suggestions!

Wait intill it turns up and it might come with fitting instructions
Where did you find them ? I bent the side of my phone a little ( honestly, it's almost invisible, but I know it's there and... you know the rest ) when i dropped it, been thinking about replacing it.
I'm afraid I can't post links, but a UK company called Rounded is selling them.

Please help.. A couple weeks ago I was using my s-pen, just like normal, and suddenly the ass-end of it just SHEARED OFF.
I attempted to repair it by shoving a piece of a toothpick into the part of the ass-end that broke off, and the part that remained inside my phone. This did not work well as, in my attempts to do this, the toothpick snapped in two and now I just have the parts with toothpick pieces stuck in them.
I clipped off the excess toothpick and have been using my stubby stylus as such since, flicking it to insert it into the phone and smacking the bottom of it against my hand as if I were packing a pack of cigarettes in order to remove it.
Point being: I cannot continue to use and abuse my phone in such a manner, even if I do have an OtterBox on the damn thing. I need to repair/replace my stylus, this is obvious, but I don't feel like paying $30 for a brand-new stylus when the only thing wrong with it is the ass-end. Does anybody know of anywhere I can purchase [a] new ass-end(s) so that i can replace just that part of the stylus?

You can just post here. Lol.
If you check on eBay, you can score a new genuine OEM S Pen for $15.
I ordered one from the Samsung website.. Using a 50% off coupon it was only 14.99....

I paid $350 for this phone. The stylus broke for no reason whatsoever after four months.
I WILL BE CHEAP IF I WANT TO
Well in that case, have you tried contacting Samsung for a warranty replacement?
No idea how that works. I lost mine soi that's why I had to replace it.
BTW... the bashing like cigarette case removal method sounds bad. I'd just keep it in a pocket for now!
No sense in breaking the phone over a relatively inexpensive replaceable accessory...

I got one under warranty from aT&T just call them and tell them it quit working. See if that works first.
Free + overnight shipping and I got $25 off my bill.
Honestly your picture does not look like it broke on its own but I'll take your word for it

Well, like I said, I attempted to repair it with a toothpick first. when that didn't work, I shaved some of the plastic off of the exposed broken pieces with a knife to make it flush so that I might Gorilla-Glue it.
You're going round robins barn for no reason. If it broke legitimately (which I don't see how) then you can easily get it replaced under warranty. Why you would even attempt a repair is beyond me, unless you broke it yourself and are feeling guilty.

I honestly don't understand how or why it broke either. There was no reason for it to have broken. My brother got his Note II at the exact same time as I did, and his is still going strong.

Sheared off, whilst in your hands, using it? Or left on the table/etc, came back and found it sheared off? Or sheared off, whilst you were inserting it back into the S-pen slot?
You weren't playing fruit ninja, were you?
Perhaps, your brother snapped his and simply swapped it with yours?
Because, I'm holding my S-pen right here, and the only way I can see it having broken as your photo depicts, is for it to have been snapped by hand.
Defective workmanship, would more likely result in it not being glued/affixed/assembled properly and it separating from each other, but not snapping/shearing.
If it truly was as you state it, then see if you can get a replacement under warranty. Otherwise purchase another one from ebay/etc or glue it back together and use it ghetto style.

Sounds and looks like S-Pen Ninja.
Again, that is just the two pieces. I have shaved off the extra plastic with a knife. That is not what it looked like when it broke. I pulled the s-pen out and when I held it like a pencil like you are supposed to, with the ass-end resting on the crook between my thumb and forefinger, it just sheared off.

sheared
past tense of shear (Verb)
Verb
Cut the wool off (a sheep or other animal).
Cut off (something such as hair, wool, or grass) with scissors or shears.
So you cut it off? I'm just giving you a hard time. I would def call into the carrier or Samsung. If you came to my store, I could probably get you one at no charge.
Anyone who would just cut up their s-pen is insane. But yeah, I've been attempting to get this resolved for a couple days now. Samsung won't put me on with an actual human, so I think I'm going to contact AT&T about it.
