[REVIEW] Portenzo Bookcase - Nexus 7 Accessories

Hello everyone! I'm a relatively new Nexus 7 owner, having owned my baby for about a month now. I ordered a temporary sleeve for it until I concluded my research for a permanent case. I was looking for something aesthetically pleasing, but still offered 100% protection. I decided on the Portenzo Bookcase due to their premium materials, quality, customization options protection, and positive reviews. The customization was the second most important factor, next to protection, for me. You can choose from many different color options for the exterior, interior, and elastic strap. You can add engravements or logos or your choosing, and they have several additional closure options to choose from.
I ordered my Portenzo Bookcase on Sept. 27, it shipped Oct. 3, and i received it Oct. 5. After a few days of usage, i decided to write a review for anyone currently on the fence about Portenzo, or looking for a new case in general.
Website: http://shop.portenzo.com
COST:
Base Price: $39.95
The options i added were:
Magnet closure: $9.95
Intellistand: $9.95
Shipping: $9.95
= $69.80
AESTHETICS
I'm very pleased with the looks and handiwork of my Portenzo Bookcase. When closed, it resembles a Moleskin journal/notebook and the woodwork resembles pages. I've yet to see a Nexus 7 case that looks THIS good, IMO.
DURABILITY
I've only had it for less than a week, so i can't yet comment on the longterm effects. but, i can say, that it definitely looks like it can stand the test of time. I'm not one to jump from new device to new device, just for the sake of keeping up with technology. I owned my iphone 3g for 2 1/2 years before switching to my HTC Inspire, which i've had fo over a year and a half now. I dont plan on upgrading until it breaks either. With that said, i plan on keeping my Nexus as long as it keeps working so i do plan on having my Portenzo case for just as long. I feel confident that it'll hold up. The fit and finish on this case is remarkable...
FIT AND FINISH
Very, very professionally made. You can tell it was handmade down to the woodwork. It even smells like fresh maple wood. The corners are carefully tucked and fastened, the wood is very smooth and sanded down, the magnets work flawlessly, and there isn't a loose end to be found. I chose the Black Morocco Faux Leather finish on the outside cover, and am very pleased. It gives the case a classier look. While youc an tell it isn't actual leather, it still feels great to the touch...and looks really good too.
The Intellistand is impressive and works like a charm. You don't have to worry about it slipping and falling flat, it WORKS exactly as advertised. You also have a few options of how steep you want the angle to be. It slides and locks flawlessly. Very intuitive feature and i'm glad ipaid the extra 10$ for it.
PROTECTION:
The Nexus fits very snugly into the wooden cradle. There are also these rubber (silicone?) pads in all four corners in order to prevent scratching from the wood. I tried flipping it upside down and dislodging the nexus by force (over my bed of course lol) to no avail. It isn't going ANYWHERE. The edges of the nexus are fully protected, and if your case is closed, i've no doubt it'll be fully protected from all around in the case of a drop. if open when dropped, the corners are still very well protected due to the wooden cradle. The edges of the Nexus are completely surrounded and will not directly in contact with the ground if dropped.
Also, the elastic strap does a GREAT job of keeping the case closed tightly. I added the additonal magnetic closure as well, which i must say, i'm not completely happy with...
THE NEGATIVE:
The only negative thing, for me, is that the magnetic closure is nowhere near as strong as i'd hoped. Had i just gotten the magnetic closure without the strap, my case would flop open at the slightest force. I tested this, holding it upside down (w.o the strap) and semi-forcibly driving it downward...the case just opened. Good thing i got the magnetic closure in ADDITION to the elastic strap. I've read that Portenzo advises letting the case break in, and the magnetic closure will be stronger. It's only been 5 days since i received my Bookcase, so hopefully this is true.
CONCLUSION - Rating 4.8/5
This case should not be passed up if you're looking for a beautiful, fully protective case for your nexus 7. It may seem pricey, but once you receive it, you'll see first hand how premium the materials are and how well your HANDMADE case was fabricated. I feel more confident now that my nexus 7 has a snug home, and i love the comments i've gotten on my Portenzo Bookcase. The only downside is that the magnetic closure seems a bit weak, so i'd suggest getting the elastic strap.

Magnetic closure
Do you think it's even worth getting the magnets? Would you spend the $10 again?
I'm quite interested in this case and will certainly get the strap, but was thinking of both closures.
Also, do you have any more thoughts to share on the appearance, feel and quality of the simulated leather?

Well, I can't say for sure since my case isn't "broken in" yet. Portenzp's response to the weak magnet complaints was that they'd strengthen upon proper break in. But, as of right now? No, I would not spend the 10$ on the magnets again. I'm very thankful I got the strap as well.
Also, I chose the faux leather bc I was going for a black, classy look. Plus the buckeye looked too rough and scratchy. It doesn't feel like leather as it isn't soft, but it does give the case that "leathery" look. Especially under light.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for posting! How do the speakers sound? Do they sound muffled? I listen to a lot of music on my N7 and want to make sure the sound is not too muffled/low. Thanks! Also, how do magnets settle in? (serious question not meant as an attack) Never heard of magnets needing to settle.

I'm no help on the speakers because I always use my headphones when on YouTube and my iPod for music. :/
And I have NO idea how magnets settle in, but that was Portenzo's response. I think they may have meant that right now the case is still stiff and once it softens, the magnetism will be stronger. I'll give it a few more weeks and then update my opinion on the magnets. In the meantime, my elastic strap gets the job done.
***Edit*** I just did a little YouTubing without my headphones, and the sound chamber actually seems to work pretty nicely. I was lying down with my Nexus in portrait on my chest, and the sound was coming directly at me. It was very clear and crisp as well. They really did a good job with this thing.

Thanks for the response! That's good news! I'm definitely considering this case. I'm not sure if I should wait till Black Friday or even Christmas to purchase in hopes that there will be a sale or coupon... Ugh...!!!

You never know! Perhaps you could shoot them an email and see.
But the price IS a bit steep, especially once you start adding options, but I'm very satisfied with the case and feel it was money well spent.

Ive had my case about 2 weeks after they announced it. I purchased the composition model. I was with you at the very beginning. The magnets were no where near as strong as I thought they should be. Luckily I added the strap closure as well. After having the case for a couple of months now I will agree with what Lea (the customer service woman from portenzo who happens to be great and very helpful) the case needed some breaking in and the magnet closure most definitely works better. Just give it some time. Either way it is a great case
And I am always receiving compliments on it. Enjoy it.

^^ thanks for the heads up!!! It's nice to have some words from someone who's had their portenzo a bit longer.
I look forward to breaking this baby in!

Here are some photos of the composition book case. I have used the case for about two week and I do not have any problems with the magnets keeping the book closed.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium

My thing is, the magnets do keep it closed, but open at the slightest force. I just wish they were stronger, like the magnets on the back for the intellistand. See how the wooden cradle just SNAPS onto the case backing? That's how secure I want the magnetic closure to be...
And I thought about getting the Composition case, but I liked the more low profile look of the bookcase. But now, after seeing some user photos of that Alano, I'm actually contemplating ordering one. Am I insane or what???? I'm a sucker for books, especially old ones, and to have my Nexus wrapped in premium, hand softened leather is appealing lol.
I think I'm losing my mind actually contemplating spending 120$ for a case...in addition to this one lol.
[Sent from my HTC Inspire. Pardon errors.]

I have one. It is a good case, but the options are not all they're cracked up to be, in my opinion.
I'll start by saying, mine is absolutely bottom end, no frills. That Is because I wanted to protect my tablet. Using the magnetic cover is silly to me. It isn't going to protect your tablet if you drop it. It will fling open, which brings me to my next point.
Twice, I've dropped my tablet, in this case, with the case open. And, twice, my tablet has fallen right out of the case when dropped. No problems have come to my tablet from this, but I wouldn't expect the tablet to come right out like that. That's a negative to me.
Also, shipping time is not as it appeared, at least not on their old website. They may have updated their "tracking" to actually reflect how long it really takes for you to receive it. Mine took about 10 business days MORE than they advertise. I'm impatient, so, that's a problem for me, but, if you are patient, maybe this is dealable for you.
I have said nothing about the intellistand, because, had I had the extra $15,I would've gotten that feature. Was on a tight budget though.
On to the good, it is a really cool looking case. And it does provide good protection, as long as you aren't super clumsy, like I am. And, I love when someone asks what book I'm reading, so I can say "Whatever book I want."
One more thing to say about the closure magnet. They offer three options at Portenzo for closure. Strap, magnet, magnet plus strap. Prices, respectively, are additional $0,$9.95,and$9.95. Strap absolutely keeps it closed, and no additional cost. Magnet is for looks, strap is for protection. Keep that in mind, and, while the corner system they use for holding the tablet in place do that well, if you drop it, they will not hold it, at least not in my case.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

^^ nice to see another point of view
I think you can send your case back and have them readd the intellistand. It was definitely worth the 9.95 IMO.
I feel confident my Nexus will be protected in the case of a fall, if closed. If open, well, eh...
But I feel this sturdy wooden cradle and rounded corners will protect from the more severe damage.

You're not the only one... The Alano is just awesome, except for the huge price tag.
BTW. is the case heavy?

Nope! I don't find it heavy at all. It's no different than carrying a book around. Same weight.

Thank you so much for the great review and photos. Really appreciate it!
I'm still on the fence about getting one... $70+ for a $200 device is a little hard to swallow but your review makes me think more and more that it might be worth it.
Thanks again!

Of course!
But, if you get the same options I did which was adding the intellistand and magnet closure, it was RIGHT under 70$.
Though, at this point, my magnetic closure still seems weak so I may not recommend getting that. Which, makes it even 9.95$ less.
So, if you just added the Intellistand option (which is a MUST, IMO) and chose basic shipping, it would be right under 60$. Now, if you wanted engraving and stuff, you'd be looking at a bit more.
And think of it as a permanent home for your Nexie! (That's what I call mine lol) The 70$ price tag was a little painful, but once I got the case in the mail, that pretty much went away.
Good luck!!

Best Case *SO FAR* :)

After trying several cases for my Nexus 7, knowing there aren't any specifically for the Nexus 7 at any retail stores, this was the best one I've come across. It will hold me over until an official case comes out (I've kept the receipt so I can return it). I just can't have such an awesome piece of tech sitting around without a case and without the ability to use it as a stand for viewing. The leather is genuine and the case is simply gorgeous. I love the way if holds the tablet without the clamps/rubberized holding mechanism actually rubbing or touching the bezel. All ports are accessible while it is in the case and the power/volume buttons are very easily accessible.
Found it at Fry's this morning on the way to work but it will set you back $59.99. One of the best portfolio stand cases I've ever owned for any of my devices. High end.

None, which is hard to say about most cases. I've always had something I've disliked about a case but have dealt with it. I've also always went for the cheaper the better in the past. This case is truly a "you get what you pay for" case. The way it holds the very edges of the tablet is my favorite part. It looks like it is floating in the case and the parts that hold the tablet in place never really become part of the view. The access to all buttons and inputs as well as the quality of the leather are great. The actual stand aspect allows for infinite viewing angles and never feels cheap, like the stand portion is going to collapse at any moment.
This case looks really nice. I personally want a colored case though and not the standard brown/black. Also, I'd rather pay a bit more for a case that I really like and thats going to last me a while then buy a cheap case that I'm not that into, deciding that Im not satisfied with it and having to buy more. So if I see something that I fall in love with then I don't mind pulling the trigger as long as its not 100+

Nice. It fits perfectly? Usually cases with the plastic clips are pretty picky about what they'll work with. If so, I'm thinking about buying one of these gtab 2 7.0 cases and adding a "smart cover" magnet to it.

I just pulled the edges on the 4 rubber ends out slightly, if that makes sense, and when the tablet was in place, they wrapped perfectly around each corner of the tablet. It takes a tiny bit of "fitting", but once it's on, it's all good.

How about the speaker in the back, is it covered or are there holes for it?
There are no holes for the speaker. I did a test at max volume and I have no idea why but it sounds louder with it in the case then out of the case. It could be the way it's configured with the speaker near flush but with a decimeter or so gap. I know with my phones and tablets that they tend to sound louder when they are angled near a wall and I seem to get the same effect with this case.

Okay. My point is that it's less than a centimeter. Maybe a millimeter or so. Enough tiny space to actually amplify the sound

The company has a case specifically for the N7, but no pictures of the N7 in a case. I'm guessing their N7 is waiting to be delivered too. Haha. Anyway, I really like the floating look, and will probably be getting this one.

I don't know, may be not the same quality but it's hard to judge from photos, or even the prizes.
Only way to judge is hand-on experience like the OP's case, his case looks good also because when the back holds on to four corners only, whereas these ones are a bit 'uneven' (when viewed in portrait mode) : p
I would perfer something that holds on to the edges of Nexus 7 only, like the Official Case or this:

The Good:
- Made Entirely from Recycled Materials
- Totally customizable
- Holds case firmly
- Elastic Strap holds firm
- Internal pocket for storage
- Buttons mostly accessible
The Bad:
- Made Entirely from Recycled Materials
- Adds a surprising bit of bulk (far less than the Blurex, but more than the Belkin)
- The Design Process vs. final product (more on that in a bit)
- Not a smart cover
The Unknown:
- Durability
Review:
I love the XDA forums around the time of a device launch. Yeah, you get an influx of short term users and forum complaints, but the place overall reflects the unadulterated joy of geek-fanboy-ism in a primarily positive way. Moreso than most of the internet.
As we all watched accessories roll in, I decided this would be the "pricier" case I decided to take the plunge on in hopes it would be my "final" case. I am an obsessive customizer/tinkerer, so it was a pretty easy decision. I decided on a pretty simple design that I thought would compliment my overall device theme (at least for the time being).
This is largely where my biggest complaint comes in, which I think is demonstrated by the screenshot below:
It is important to note that I chose to have the order altered to incorporate the black strap (as opposed to the white), however the overall base color is simply not similar. I didn't agonize over the design, and used stock background as opposed to a provided image file, so I definitely did not take full advantage of the customization - but still feel the colors don't match up particularly well.
That said, the print is high quality (especially given that all the imagery I provided had a fair degree of transparency to it, I wasn't sure it would turn out the greatest), the sturdy feeling recycled neoprene has a nice worn texture to it, and in general I still think it is an incredibly attractive case.
The fill seems to be some sort of either recycled cardboard, pressboard, or plastic. It does flex easily, but doesn't feel bent easily (if that makes sense). Overall, this is an area where only time will tell, but I'd say I'm leaning on the optimistic side. It certainly does not feel as though it's about to fall apart, and the stitching on the neoprene is absolutely top of the line. Incredibly well done.
The lack of smart cover functionality is a bit disappointing, however, I had no expectation it would have one when I ordered it. There was no mention of it on the site, anywhere, and I did not choose to clarify. I had purchased the Blurex smart case immediately on ordering my N7, and when I ordered this case decided if necessary, I would do a bit of surgery with an exacto knife to extract the magnet. I will update this thread with my success to this end, but it is certainly encouraging to have the pocket sewn inside already, as I'm fairly certain it will be simple to stitch the magnet into this case.
tl;dr aka Final Thoughts:
At $40, this was not necessarily a cheap case, but in my opinion very reasonably priced. Turnaround time was definitely satisfactory, and my interactions with their customer service department were very prompt and courteous. It holds very comfortably in the hand.
While it would be foolish to estimate how it will wear over time, I feel like it's going to hold up just fine for my use.
Looks nice! For $40 that didn't sport a smart cover/magnet option....kinda suXors IMO
But I do like the look and it doesn't look very bulky at all. I'd be on the fence on this one but because of the lack of the smart cover, that would be a pass on my book. But I know some who don't like the smart cover option, this may appeal to them.

In reality, it's not that bulky - I just feel like adding any bulk to sleeker devices like this kind of ruins the form factor - so it's not just this case, I struggle with almost all of them.
The smart cover will likely be a deal breaker for a lot of people. My advice to anyone considering ordering one of these is simply to contact them and see if they have any plans on implementing the magnet in future designs. They replied to my email within 24 hours, were very courteous, and I imagine it's something they more than likely do plan on implementing. I'm just an early adopter
And I don't mind hacking my own together. We've got a sewing machine, fabric, and a magnet already - why not?
If you want a smart cover, just download an app to do the job.

True, that's an option, but I prefer the reliability of a hardware solution, particularly when I already have the hardware.
I know someone who used to work at Caseable. I got a free custom Touchpad case (technically iPad case, but it fits the same) because of it. Never used it though. As much as I liked my custom design, it wasn't really a 'case'. Just a book-like cover, and a strap in each corner to secure it. I'd rather have something that snaps onto the back of the device like most cases.
I am waiting for mine to arrive, I thought the corners were rounded? It looks nothing like in the pictures on their site!

Looks pretty close to me?
Yeah it does there... When I ordered mine there were different pictures in that spot, showing a blue and orange one, as well as the pink colorful one I ordered, and those looked narrower across and with more rounded corners, the way it does in the image where you choose the pattern. I still can't wait to get mine though, I'm sure ill still like it (and will add my own magnet of course)

I think I know the shot you are talking about - maybe was on there around day one?
Definitely a bit different, and way different than the design app makes it look for sure.
On playing with it throughout the day, though, I definitely think I am pretty happy. My gripes are largely superficial to this point.

[Review] TreeGloo Case for Nexus 7

EDIT: 9/20/12 Taken from the other Treegloo thread:
Just to report back. I think I was one of the few that had received their cases the first week of release. In any case, I have dropped my N7 twice. Once on the curb getting my 4 yr old out of my truck and yesterday in the garage from a 3-4 foot drop straight to the garage floor with the flat back hitting the ground
I picked it up, and nothing was damaged (thank the heavens!) and I just left it for my wife to use and I went to work. When I got home from work, I opened up the tablet and found that the tablet was not seating correctly on the case. I thought to myself, "crap something is wrong" so I took the N7 out of the case. What I found was that the back case had popped open when it hit the floor in the garage. I initially didn't catch it, but all I did was pop the case back into the bezel. (whew)
So I have to say it was a good day for the Treegloo case lol. I don't think it would have of survived a fall like that without certain issues if I was using a leather case. But that's just speculation .
EDIT 8/10/12: Update on my case. While talking with treegloo.com through G+, it was pointed out to me that I have a cloth lining not a paper lining, which is the default. The reason is because not many people order the green liner. I am weird like that lol. So kudos to treegloo once again for a FREEBIE!
Still loving the case. I can carry my N7 with the utmost confidence anywhere I go!
The issue well not issue, more of a FYI to treegloo, that I have an imprint of the inner lining on the lower left corner of the screen protector. This doesn't affect the tablet at all, just a FYI if someone does have a screen protector on and if you see something like this.

Ok here is my quick take of the Treegloo cases which you can make your own at https://www.treegloo.com/
As you can see the case is wrapped with care and with a quick personal thank you, which is nice because you really do not see this type of service. I chalk it up to being in Texas, but I guess I am bias because I am in TX (grew up in NY) and with all the 'southern' hospitality it didn't totally surprise me .
And before I go into some of the aspects of the case, I have to say they have been above and beyond the scope of service in terms of this case. I mean their bread and butter is most likely the ipad lines, but at this point they catered to many of our needs, which is awesome in my book, and they are in the US to boot. And in addition, I know of another member who chose the kinetic latch systems as well that received a Fedex'd replacement latch in case the one installed was the incorrect one. I replaced it on mine and kept the old one in case I needed another as a backup. :good:
Crack open the plastic packing and you can still smell the dyes and glue from the case
Ok before I stuck my precious N7 into the case, I took a look around and looked at the suede lining (which is an 'extra' option I paid for) that would protect this beast. I looked at the Kinetic Latch system (also extra) to see how it worked. It's a very novel idea. Having multiple angles on this thing. It's really well thought out!
Now putting in the N7 is very interesting. You have instructions enclosed to push in from top first and then follow up with the bottom of the device and push down firmly. After that I can confidently attest that this tablet will not be coming out easily. So I was curious, how hard is it to take out? Apparently not too difficult at all. It's like taking off a TPU case off a phone. No biggie.
All the buttons are easily accessible. People with bigger fingers may find it a bit difficult to access, but users may vary here. :silly:
Now looking at the bottom part of the device you see the cut out of the frame and the reason's are pretty self explanatory. The bottom port portion is quite large because of the speaker and of course the headphone port is carved out perfectly as well...well almost perfectly. The only headphones plug that did not work well was my Shure SE215. The reason is because the 3.5mm plug has a big head to that and any twist will disconnect the SE215's. But all the other headsets like the earphones from a Beats Rezound and also my Sol Republic Track HD headphones work here as well. Again users may vary on this one.
The smart cover works as advertised. No worry about that there. And folding the cover back does NOT affect the screen at all. I tried .
Any negatives? Kinda. Other than the stated access to the buttons if you have bigger fingers may drive you nuts. Also the case yet small and like a small paperback, does take away from the sexy thin Nexus 7 original nekkid form. Too bad there's no bikini case out there :silly:.
So do I recommend this case? A resounding yes! If you are looking for a case that will protect your precious N7 this will do it's job well. The wood is buttery smooth and the case holds the baby in nice and tight. The wood is smooth as butter and the materials used is perfect in my opinion.
And on an off note, I was asked recently if the case affected my wifi. And I have not noticed anything degradation in signal. All my pages and play store pull up as quick as without the case.
Anyway, here are the pics. Pretty much an unboxing photo journal lol. Questions?? Sure whatcha got?
This is not my pic, this is from treegloo. I didn't take a pic of this angle, so I figured I take it from the site. Reason? Because I forgot
What about the two mics? Are there holes cut out for them? If not, do they still work fine?
I have been debating on one of these for a while now. After reading about several bad experiences I thought I'd forego this type of case, but I can't find anything I really like. Maybe I will take a leap and try it out. Thanks for the review.

If you ordered the lining yes the suede is cut out to let the mics work. If you did not, it's not an issue is it? LOL

No I meant that because if there is not lining, there will be no obvious cut outs. There would be rubber bumpers at the corners from what I understand.

Give me a test and I'll test it. I already did a few google searches via voice search and it came up fine. Asked to play music two different albums and also asked for the weather without issues.

I highly suggest emailing them or post on their G+ page. My last email was quickly responded by Jen within the hour on a business day.:good:
And as for the 'bashing' thread. I posted there as well and posted my opinion on the guy. I don't think he responded. . I'll let that thread die. It was a complaint on his personal experience, where I do not fault him, but a newbie badmouthing a company just on his/her/it experience rubs me the wrong way. I mean there was no defending treegloo in his/her/its eyes.

Ah ok. Cool. For the "basic" cases like mine with a few add-ons, you should be fine. But if you had added ALL of that fun stuff, that's where they have to do some quality control stuff because that is indeed an "one-off", unique case :cyclops:.
The case looks really good. I ended up with a Portenzo case because it was a little cheaper and had more appealing colors but I really prefer teh TreeGloo's wood frame. I'm glad that you are happy with your case!

[Mini Review] Nanum Ultra Slim Case {$5USD+shipping}

Just got one of these CHEAP, but GREAT slim cases for the N7. I wasn't looking for a case, but when I saw AndroidPolice review it, I jumped on it because of the price really lol.
My take: It's awesome for $4USD plus shipping. Now Amazon is selling it for $5USD plus shipping ($3 in the US). So basically now for $8 bux, this case with free stylus/pen is shipped to you from the USA (for US peeps that's awesome not waiting a week or more for deliveries from overseas).
I have used it for a day and with my 4 year old last night. She found it ok, but she liked the prop up stand on the Seidio Active case better, even though the Seidio made the N7 a bit heavier than I would liked. Don't get me wrong, I still love the Seidio case, just for not everyday use. I intend to use the Seidio for travel.
As for this Ultra slim case, it is true to it's listing. Coming from a bit bulky Seidio case to this is night and day. Yes you don't get the same protection, but the slimness cannot be ignored. Mine is white, well off white, more like French Vanilla ice cream lol. So if you get a white backing or front face, it will NOT match. What you see on the Amazon and Android Police review is what you get. It's true to the pic.
All the holes line up perfect, but also has a hole in the back as well for no reason at all lol. I think the design was for something else but was scrapped. Maybe it was for another device and they changed the design to fit the N7. Maybe it was meant for the ipad mini? Dunno. That whole in the back has no real use. Other than that, all the openings and cutouts are fine. The speaker cutout is perfect and the case flips open without an issue and the bonus, a magnet in this slim thing. I like it that you can't see it in this case. There is only one way to flip the case to have it stand, but you can manipulate it to prop it up to type down as well if you play with the folds a bit.
And to the fold/front flap, this is just like all the slim type cases out there. It will protrude a bit at first, but upon more usage, the bend should subside. There is also a stylus holder on the back. I personally don't use styluses but its there if you need to use it with the free stylus they give you.
My ONLY con is to this case is that when I first got the case, after cleaning the N7 and installing it into the case, it didn't catch in all the corners. Because of that, the front flap wouldn't close. I thought to myself, crap, I have to get a replacement? But I didn't give up on the case lol.
I made it fit lol. The reason why it didn't fit is because of the felt lining in the back where it houses the N7. The backing overlapped one of the ridges where the tablet snaps into the corner and because of that it didn't sit and line up. What I did was snapped 3 of the 4 corners and when I came to the one that wouldn't snap, I used the front flap to gently push down in the corner to snap into place. Now it's held in there real tight and flush. It's not going anywhere. Now YMMV because the felt lining may not be an issue for you or the lining could totally messed up the corner. But for me, this quick trick worked.
As for pics, let me know if you want them but the pics listed in Amazon and Android Police link below has all the pics you really need. :good: It comes in a few colors. As of now (3/26/13), the available colors is the white, blue and grey. At the time of ordering, there was purple IIRC, but I my second choice would have been the grey one. .

question. Does the front flap auto turn the tablet on and off? and does it have a magnetic strip or something that holds the front flap shut so it doesnt open when turned upside down etc?
Looks quite nice. If anything happens to my poetic case I'll be sure pick this one up.

Yes the front flap does. Sorry I did mention it did have a magnet/magnet strip, but failed to state that the magnet works in that way. But it does NOT have anything to keep the cover shut. There is no catch at all. You can use a rubber band if you want, but not really needed in my case. I carry my stuff in a powerbag messenger bag.
I saw this case on Android Police as well and really liked the look of it, though at the time it wasn't shipping to Canada at all. Took another look, and it is now! Sadly though I paid more in shipping than I did for the case, but it's the first case I've seen that I actually like the look of so $15 is a small price to pay! I got mine in blue.
That sucks for the shipping to Canada!!
As for the "hole" in the back. I read that it's used for assisting to grip the tablet, which I can see, I guess lol.
Don't know which N7 you have, but would you happen to know if the mic holes are clear for a 3G nexus? One hole is an inch above the power button, the other us just about halfway down the left side, if you count the dots from the corner it's between the 23rd and 24th one, or between the 12th and 13th one up from the last dock pin.

Great question! I have the first gen wifi only N7 so I cannot absolutely say, but I took pics to explain if it works or not. Based on what you said, the mic hole looks like it will be covered above the power button, but the pogo side is pretty much free and clear. Again please take a look at the pics, they would most likely answer your question.

Thanks for the PSA. That looks nice and the price is good.
Do you think it could be used with a dock? Maybe not the official dock, but a DIY that uses the pogo contacts. Or do I worry needlessly about wear and tear on the micro USB port, and I should just prop open the case and plug/unplug the factory charger as needed.
The only thing I worry about the design is the side that rests on the table when it's open is the side that touches the screen when it's closed, and the tables at coffee shops aren't always clean. Maybe I'm worrying needlessly again.

I have been using the USB port since I got my N7 back in July (wow it's almost a year?! lol) and no issues with the USB port for me. And I religiously charge my stuffs when I can get to a charger lol.
As for using a DIY pogo dock, I guess you can if you have the pogo receptors in the dock that can protrude out and act like a plug to the pogo on the N7. But I guess you can try it out lol. You don't need to prop open the case to charge. There's openings where it needs to be.

For those situations, and if you frequent areas like that, your better bet is the Seidio Active case where you can just wipe off and not worry about stains (on the black version anyways lol). Or even a cheaper tpu alternative.
Hmmm which color should I get? Which do u think would look good with the black carbon dbrand kp?

Well for black CF, you should go pink all the way.
Seriously, for black CF, I would go grey (when they are in stock again) or even blue. They do have black as well if you want to go with the easy route but again, not in stock yet.
Well the french vanilla white would be ok as well. For me and the CF, I'd go black or grey.
EDIT: One thing though DTJB. Because you are getting the CF back and Front as well I am guessing, this case may not fit. The case just fits as it is and if you are adding the dbrand back, it may be too thick, believe it or not. Sorry man.

I read somewhere that while the magnet on this case successfully unlocks the screen when you open it, it will also lock the screen on you when you fold the cover around behind the tablet to hold it in one hand. Can you comment on this issue?

I have heard of this as well, but that was the first thing I had tried and no, it never happened to me and I have tried to purposely do it with the flap back.
Great, glad to hear it.
The other question I have: several people on Amazon reviews mentioned a similar problem to what you described about the case being tight and having to force it in to get it to snap into place. A few of them went so far as to say it was so tight that they noticed discoloration and/or backlight issues with the tablet display in the corner in question, due to the physical stress imposed by the case.
Have you experienced any such concerns?
Thanks.

Nope. They may have put too much force in the corner to do so, but I don't have that issue. I would have blasted the case if that happened lol.

The inside has rubber piece that protect your phone from direct aluminum contact. The rubber acts as a impact absorbing material. It keeps the phone in place and prevents it from sliding around once the case is tightened down.
The case is closed by 2 screws with the hex key included.. The charging port opening is always large enough to fit the OEM cable. The large white and black ones. I tested this with both. Sweet Armor cases do not allow OEM USB cables. The case has a great feel while maintaining it's elegance. The case does not add much bulk to the phone. There is also a small cut out for a lanyard for those are you that prefer that method of carry. There is also plenty of room for the S-Pen to be slid out. There are also cut outs for the microphone and noise cancellation mic at the top.
The opening for the headphones fit the OEM headset easily and still have room to spare.
The bumper of the Note II Draco keep the camera high enough to not come in direct contact when the phone is laid on a flat surface. This is a huge relief. Another feature of the Draco case is the power and volume toggle switch is also made of aluminum. Attention to detail was not spared with this project.
Does this case affect the cell phone signal / reception? Not really. Visually I might see it drop a bar and bounce back. I'm not in a very good coverage area and the function, data and sound quality of my calls have not been affected. At home and work I have the same number of bars. Signal strength has been the exact same in both areas.
MSRP: $89.99 and is available at DRACOdesign in 3 different colors.
Conclusion: The case is minimalistic and looks sharp. It feels great in my hand and gives it a better grip than a naked phone.

90 bucks, and made in china to boot???
I dont think so...maybe with a 60% off coupon...
Battery cover removable when case on?
chrischoi said:
The case is closed by 2 screws with the hex key included..
The bumper of the Note II Draco keep the camera high enough to not come in direct contact when the phone is laid on a flat surface. This is a huge relief. Another feature of the Draco case is the power and volume toggle switch is also made of aluminum. Attention to detail was not spared with this project.

I presume that with this case on, the battery cover is not accessible for removal? Not ideal for those who tend to swap batteries, Micro SD cards and such; as you'd have to dismantle/assemble every time.
Shame that the Sweet Armor cases don't provide adequate sized port opening for OEM USB, as its case design does allow access to the battery cover.

I just did a review. Nothing asked you to go into a thread and give your 2 cents. If it's out of your price range, ok then. I never asked you to buy it. I obtained a case and gave my opinion on it. Never asked what you thought of the price, where you thought it was made or how much of a discount was needed for you to consider buying it. It's almost like going into a ROM thread and telling the person that put it together that their ROM sucked, it needs more of X, less of Y and needs the X app. Someone did a review on a product I bought. I bought it because it seemed legit. Things didn't work out. I returned it. I didn't go back and bash it or anything. This was even after I bought the product. I just returned it and bowed out quietly. Just because you don't have it and don't want to buy it, doesn't mean it won't work for someone else. Maybe they will enjoy it. Sometimes some people just want the real thing. I did a Draco case review in the past with a good turn out. Many people bought the case using the 30% discount.

That's correct. May not be ideal for people who swap batteries and cards. But it's simple. It goes on and doesn't come of. It works great for me because I use one battery throughout the day.
Thanks a lot for the review, chrischoi.
I bought a Blue Thunder bumper two days ago and cant wait for it to arrive.
I was a little bit worried about the cell signal strength.
I live in the area where I rarely have a very good signal.
Does you phone have any protection film on the back?

That's a pretty douchey response bro. If u don't want people's opinions I suggest u post ur crap on a piece of paper in ur crapper instead of a "PUBLIC" forum.
But that's just my review.
Wase is a respected member of the note 2 community and I think u need to start treating other people with at least a little respect.
Just my "2 cents"

It is designed in Japan, made in Taiwan.

what,do you work for these guys?
this is NOT like saying a rom sucks...a rom is someones PERSONAL compilation, made from their hard work and effort..
this case was NOT made by YOU, so quit crying about my comments...90 dollars, or even 60 dollars is outrageous for a thin piece of TAIWAN aluminum, and if you dont think so, thats your opinion...MY opinion is this is a rip off, and you can find what probably is the exact same thing on Ebay for 20 bucks or so.
If you dont like my opinion, then dont read it...you dont have to agree with me, and I dont have to agree with you...

In the future can you put your reviews in the thread of the product?

If that's bullying... then u must've gotten beat up alot in school. We were simply stating, just like Chris has the right to post..... Wase had a right to post his opinion. Does he not? Chris is the one who got all defensive. It was completely uncalled for. This is a community but unfortunately is slowly turning into a dictatorship

Thanks.
Reception wise, I don't notice a drastic difference. If anything visually it may drop bar, but it will regain it instantly. Seems to behave normally that way without the case depending on where I am.
Nothing on the back. Backs are cheap to replace. I ordered a OEM back with just Samsung on it, so I'm waiting on that.

Seriously? Are we here making statements about my personal life already?
Please, do not turn this thread into what it is not supposed to be.
You know, there is plenty of people in the world who can easily afford buying a Lamborgini.
I cannot imagine myself posting something like that:
$500,000 is a rip-off, never buy it!
Let's purchase a $12,000 Ford Focus.
It will drive you from point A to B too.
I have purchased a couple of aluminum bumpers and a whole bunch of plastic, TPU and leather cases on eBay and was not satisfied with any of them at all.
Of course, Draco bumper may not be worth $90 (actually, I got mine for $75), we will see.
I am tired of less expensive cases that are really not what I like.
It is so subjective, what case is good, what case is bad.

Personal riffs have no place in the forums. You're right about that. However everyone is entitled to his or her opinion as long as its not a personal attack on someone. You posted a review and someone responded. They said they thought the price didnt match the product. If you post a review of something in a public forum then you need to expect people to disagree with you. Its the age old adage....Opinions are like a-holes. Everyones got one.
OK guys, let's just take a deep breath. I hate to get in middle of this, but I kind of understand both sides. Prior to me starting to write my reviews, I made exactly the same post as Wase about another aluminum bumper vendor with a price tag of $100+. That was one side. After I started writing reviews, I discovered another side where I contact vendors directly who I think offer a great product I believe in and want to review and to share it with XDA community. Basically, one side is how to spend my hard earned money wisely, and the other side - I get free samples of products I think great and I want to review them in the best way.
The bottom line, this particular product or something like pricey VITREO is a matter of personal choice and something that's going to be not everyone's cup of tea. But I'm sure every company justifies their pricing in comparison to competition, and they will see how well the product is selling and will offer discounts to "adjust" it Cost of the material plays a role, but no matter how great the vendor thinks their product is - if its not selling they will have to adjust the price. Unless their name is "Mugen" and they so full of themselves thinking their $105 extended battery is better than a same one from Anker for $17
I have sweet armor on my note 2 and it does allow access for the OEM charging/USB cable without a problem.
I agree that it was pointless to post the opinion of the case being a rip off financially.

A question for the reviewer.
How does this case affect the GPS?
I've gotten 5 aluminum bumper cases that all affect fix lock and acquisition.
Thank you in advance

I'll test this on the way to work and get right back to you on this. There was a slight delay, but that seemed about normal. I was able to keep it until I got to work. That was just a 10 minute drive.
Yes that cord. The one that came in the box with the phone plugs into the phone just as easy with the Sweet Armor on just as easy as it does without the Sweet Armor.

How would this compare with a sweet armor?
Would you be able to do a side by side comparison/shootout between the two bumpers?
The thing about the sweet armor I like is, specifically, the side buttons.
I'm planning on getting an all black sweet armor, if they ever come back in stock that is, and a glass screen cover.
Is this one really worth the extra money, even considering the inability to remove the back cover?
