[Q] Some Doubts about Installing official ICS rom when it's released - LG Optimus 2x

So Right now i am using paranoid android CM9 rom, Can some one post me link or tell me how to update it directly from PC.
1. Do i have to go back to stock lg firmware to install ICS
2. Do i have to change the partition From Ext4 to Ext3
Too eager to try as soon as it releases, so posting it well in early PLEASE HELP!!!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php

Maybe I'm not dedicated enough to complete my search through thousands of posts, but his question yields such vague results, as every keyword is relevant to at least one other topic in this entire forum. /hyperbole
So instead of blowing this post off as a noob/troll thread (This IS effectively the noob forum ) I shall offer my suggestion.
To be on the safe side, if the update is OTA, one could use nvflash to restore a stock ROM. This solves any potential ext3 problems, too.
If a community member releases (or otherwise links to) a downloadable, flashable package, they will most likely include their own instructions, guidelines, and recommendations.
With the exception of the months-belated leak, and the anticipated release of kernel sources, there isn't anything to suggest an official update is even arriving, but I have no idea, and it really isn't my place to be passing judgement.

Thanx Mate !!! Much appreciated.

What an anxious mind!
Be in the present time, not in hypothetical future!
When Roms will be available all instructions will come within.

My suggestion is: wait until the sources of the official stock rom have been merged to CM 9 / CM10.
Right now "only" the HWA is missing in CM9. Some rumors also say that the bootloader included in the stock
might be locked....
I think you stay with your custom rom and wait until this is updated or changeto a different custom rom.

Ah, these guys said it better. With something so looked forward to, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a guide to get the updated goodness on your phone as soon as builds get uploaded.

Want to root, have some questions

Since everything I need to know is scattered across various threads and there is no specific information regarding my question AFAIK so I decided to post a new thread. Forgive a newb for being worried.
I've decided to root my N1 and am running the EPF24B European build. I just had some questions and concerns:
1. What ROM do you think is best? I think the majority of people like Cyanogen.
2. If I root my phone now and flash on Cyanogen, when Cyanogen releases a Froyo ROM how will I update? Does that happen through a dedicated app? OTA?
3. How do I keep all my current programs and settings? I've heard of Nandroid but have no idea what it does. I presume it has something to do with the NAND memory?
4. btw how stable is a rooted phone?
5. I've seen a number of guides here, but don't know whether or not they are the latest versions. Can anyone point me to a proper guide? Or are they all the same?
Thanks if anyone can answer this.

you might get flamed for this or get this thread closed but i will try to help u.
1)while cyanogen is the best rom in my opinion, froyo is the ****. no matter what. and when cyanogen finally puts his touches on it, it will be even better.
3)no you cant keep them. u would have to be ROOTED first and then you can use titanium backup to make a backup or all your settings and freeze apps. til then, nope u have to completely wipe and start over again. i know when i switch from rom to rom, google automatically downloads the apps that i have had installed before i switch roms if that helps you any.
4)rooted phones are VERY stable and even faster than stock. more memory, runs smoother. the only one that might not run as smooth is the Desire Rom because of sense ui but i love sense ui and have it on my G1 but yes rooted phones are stable.
5)i have followed the instructions of this guide that was for macs tho. u have to be a bit specific if your on mac or pc
I'm using a PC.
And thanks for your input.
btw you didn't answer question 2. If I update to CM now, will I be able to update OTA when a Froyo version comes out?

There are 2 main builds right now in the development forum...Texacice's build based on Evervolv AOSP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1366897....and BCM based on CM9 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1557606...both are great in their own right and personal preference will dictate which you use. Both have functioning HWA...have for a while now and both require BR partitions of 220 10 16...or close to that. There are a couple ICS roms out there that dont need a new boot partition, but frankly I wouldnt bother, as they are not complete full ICS roms. The only major functionality missing currently is video recording...although that looks to be close to fixed also. You can actually flash a new boot partition via recovery without installing blackrose. See this thread....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1637166...and select the ICS partition and flash in recovery prior to installing new rom.
Correction: you do need BlackRose for that.
if u want to flash ICS roms. u need to first knw abt Blackrose. read it carefully before proceeding

ok thanks a lot to everyone, you all have been very helpful. these 2 roms mentioned are both "final" roms right? they're not beta, RC or whatever, aside form video recording that is annoying but i can live without it
btw i have root but i have the bootloader locked. can i still install br and do all the other stuff?
yes u can install with locked bootloader.
no they are not RC or beta releases. they are not final aswell, the devs are really working hard and pushing regular updates to make the rom better and complete.

Need help understanding Kernels and ROMs

Hello Forum,
I am very new to rooting devices and installing custom ROMs.
I have a few questions I would like to ask, I searched the forum and couldn't find appropriate answers.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 (This being one of the threads)
I was going through the sticky thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1789397
Which says, "WARNING: Do NOT use CM9, Asylum CM9 or AniDroid kernels as drivers on ANY CM10 based Rom - and vice-versa!"
I had recently flashed CM9.1 on my galaxy note GT-N7000, by following the instructions mentioned on their wiki page.
Just installed clock work recovery, entered the recovery mode, did a WIPE & installed CM9.1 & google apps.
After a few days I followed the same procedure and flashed CM10's latest preview. It went well and everything seems to be working, except that
the phone is a tad bit laggy and doesn't really deliver what JB is supposed to deliver. Sometime the power button won't wake the screen up.
This can be because CM10 is still in preview stage and the stable release is not out. But now that thread I mentioned before kind of bothers me.
Do I need to update the kernel while switching from CM9 to CM10? Downloads are available in the same thread. Or does the kernel update on its own while flashing CM10? And if I have to update the kernel do I need to have CF-Root? Does the fact that I have clock work recovery on my device mean that I have CF-Root?
Sorry if my question is too noob-ish, I just wan't to know a little theory behind what I'm doing so I don't screw my device. None of the threads that I found in the search explain things simply. I would be really glad if anyone of you could help me just understand things. I really appreciate this community for having put up so much information, thanks in advance!

[Q] First-Time Custom ROM&/Kernel, need Answers

Hello
I've spent the last 24 hours browsing the O2x section of XDA, and decided that I might change the ROM and/or kernel. I'm considering either Paranoid Android or DjangoManouche ROMs with the KingOfBirds Kernel (If i go with DM) or Kowalski Kernel. However, I have some questions that I just can't find the yes/no answer for. Would anyone be able to answer these for me?..
1. I am running Stock Rooted ICS V30A with CWM v6.0.1.5, busybox and adb installed, which I assume I achieved through steps 3 and 8 on the AIO toolkit because I didn't do anything else.
Does this translate to "I am on the new partition layout with EXT4, have cwm recovery and can proceed to install kernels and ROMS for the new partition layout"?
2. I generally use my p990 for gaming, movies and internet yet still using it as a phone at school. None of the kernels (Kowalski's or KingOfBirds) I am looking at using state whether or not they have Tegra H/W acceleration support, which I do not want to loose. Do the above/all kernels for the p990 support H/W acceleration? :fingers-crossed:
3. Do the kernels and ROMs above still allow me to edit vold.fstab and have a 32gb internal memory from my sd card?
4. I see a lot of people saying CM10 is the best, but a lot of posts with questions and fixes for bugs with it. Any users of this one able to tell me if it is stable and would be suitable for me (see question 2)?
And if you are using DM or Paranoid Android, what are they like for someone who wants a nice fast stable O2X?
5. Will backing my apps up with Titanium and zipping my internal storage be enough to save my game data? $9m on Hill Climb Racing I don't want to loose.
6. When I am changing, should I format my phone in cwm, and then flash the kernel after ROM? (eg DM -> KingOfBirds)
hi there! i'll try to answer some of your questions:
1) you are on the new bootloader and should flash rom's for this particular setting(this doesn't necessarily mean you can't go back to the old bootloader-search for unbrick tutorial in development section)
2) from what i know they do(someone correct me if i'm wrong)
3)i don't know
4)i can assure you that official cm10 is an excellent rom and you should try it ) (i for one never had any major problems(bug call, bsod) and will return to it after some testing )
5) i think it will do just fine
6)every custom rom has some guiding points in the first post(and second and maybe third ) ) please do follow them and you will have no trouble.
good luck!

Thanks a million vader I'm going to give CM10 a shot on that note, but like you said if someone can confirm for sure if the H/W acceleration works that would be great too.
I don't think that h/w acceleration is something that lacks in the post-cm9 roms. After lg released both official ics, sources and our cm device maintainer aremcee(ricardo) got hold of them all stock roms and cm variants have hwa. I can confirm that tonyp, in his ParanoidAndroid has the option to assign which app to use hwa

Cool ok, Thanks again Just one last question - should I install kernels before/after zip if not specified by creator?I think I'm going to try pengus77's kernel and CM10 build for the new bootloader.
Flash the kernel after you're done with the rom. Cheers!

That was the last question hopefully Backing up my phone atm (done cwm, titanium and AIO backups, i should be covered ) and then I'm going to shoot this rom and kernel at it. I'll post back how it goes.

Most stable ROM for daily use of non techie/dev (STOCK probably best option?)

Hi,
I just got a Razr I 2nd hand. I live in Ireland and believe I'm on the EU/GB version. I'm looking for the most stable ROM as I use my phone for business and need it to be 100% reliable (no bugs if possible!) and have great battery and everything else working. I'm not a techie or dev so have no interest in installing a ROM just to test it out, I need to just be sure the ROM I choose will be reliable and wouldn't plan on ever changing it again unless there's some VAST improvements in future Android versions.
So what I'm looking for is:
Most stable ROM with no bugs and 100% reliable
Latest Android (JB?)
Phone needs to be ROOTED
I would also like to be able to remove bloat ware before installing the ROM so if there was any way I could go into the system app folder of the SD card before flashing the ROM to remove any bloatware it would be great, otherwise, I'd just use ROOT EXPLORER so not vitally important for the pre-flash removal.
Ideally I'd like to stay with stock ROM as I'd just feel more at ease using stock, so if I could somehow get exact files of 4.12 stock, clear a bit of bloatware, flash it and have a stable, rooted phone that would be perfect. I don't see any untouched stock roms of 4.12 available however, there is one "optimised" one but it seems to have a few bugs so I wouldn't be comfortable with this. Also, although I've used some technical terms above, I've absolutely no idea even how to root a phone, I use a guy from The Android Clinic to do all the difficult stuff for me like rooting
Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

First, this is the wrong section to ask for it, this section its only for development, there is a section called "Questions and answers" for that.
If you want a 100% without bug rom, just use a homemade fastboot of Jb, the come pre-rooted and debloated yourself, its stock so no bugs

Thanks for the reply. Ooops, didn't know it was in the wrong section, hopefully it won't be an issue.
Thanks for the suggestions, have you any idea where I could find a homemade fastboot of JB? Is that a ROM you're referring to or something else? Is it completely compatible with Razr I do you think?
Until now... as you know (i hope) humans have not yet created a rom 100% bug free, because they are HUMANS, and fail.
Every rom has bugs... including the stock ones..

Haha, yes of course I can live with a few minor bugs, I guess I'd just feel safer using stock as I'm a novice with these things
Do you know is there a rooted JB ROM for Razr I that I can just download and flash through recovery? That's about all I know how to do tech wise, for rooting and all that, I need to employ the services of an expert
So I PM'd Marco who pointed me to here for what I'm after: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1936512
Thanks!
Sir it is an issue...Please read the Forum Rules on posting, Thread Closed & Thank You.
