Noob questions - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have some noob questions, please someone answer them.
I rooted my note by flashing from recovery a supersu zip file i dint install any CWM.
Now my question is 1) Should i install a CWM to flash a safe kernal, cant i do from stock recovery.
2) Will i get the OTA update when i am on custom kernal and can i install it directly without causing any problems.
3) In many threads i read dont wipe on stock kernals, why actually should we wipe ours caches. No where it is mentioned, when someone explains tell me when has it to be done like while flashing custom kernals or custom roms?
4) If i use setcpu to over clock will it cause any problems longterm or shorterm.
5) And in many threads many say i bricked my note so is there a guarantee that it can be brought back to normal state.

One more question wht is DPI why should it be varied, how is it done

1) Should i install a CWM to flash a safe kernal, cant i do from stock recovery. ?
u cannot install CWM just like that.. when u install a kernel u get CWM with it.
some methods of rooting doesnt install a safekernel or CWM... just root. then u can use mobile odin on the phone to install a safe kernel.
2) Will i get the OTA update when i am on custom kernal and can i install it directly without causing any problems.
u will be notfied of OTA but will not get installed.. it need stock recovery, stock kernel and non root
3) In many threads i read dont wipe on stock kernals, why actually should we wipe ours caches. No where it is mentioned, when someone explains tell me when has it to be done like while flashing custom kernals or custom roms?
sometimes the apps wont work correcly due to a corrupt cache. wiping it fixes them.. when flashing ROMs its a must for the ROM to build its on cache for the new apps. flashing a kernel doesnt require cache wiping
4) If i use setcpu to over clock will it cause any problems longterm or shorterm.
i havent heard of any issues with OC.. but yes one thing that is very prominent is when playing games the phone gets a lot more warm when OC.
5) And in many threads many say i bricked my note so is there a guarantee that it can be brought back to normal state.
it depends. if its a soft brick like when u have access to the download mode.. then 80% of the time yes but if it becomes totally dead aka hardbrick.. it needs a mothernpard replacement.

All ur questions can be found if u use search actually.
But let me try to answer.
1. If u use stock recovery and u want to flash custom safe kernel, go and download philz kernel. But choose properly the kernel for ur baseband. Read his thread carefully.
2. When u r on custom kernel or root, most probably u wont get ota, or u want be able to flash it properly. U can keep the latest update by flashing through odin.
3. Dont wipe on stock kernel, especially wipe data. It will trigger the mmc bugs. Why u need to wipe? U will need it when u like to jump from rom to rom it is needed for a clean installation. So u wont get any serious problem when flashing custom rom.
4.might be yes might be no. If u follow instructions from developer of course not. So far the best OC is from hydracore. Unless u know how to do it urself. Try to avoid 3rd party apps from market.
5. Dont be afraid of bricking ur note if u like to learn. I bricked mine on the 5th weeks i had this note. U can revive it using hg42 pit revival methods.
Hope i help u.

Don't worry about Overclock. Just flash PhilZ kernel (even flashable fro Stock) and you will get Root + Safe Stock Kernel + Safe Awesome recovery! NO BRICKING! Just do it:good:

Dpi is a unit measuremen for ur display.
Originally it comes with 320 dpi.
But our devs here are manage to change it to smaller dpi.
Lets say 290dpi and 240 dpi. It will be depends on how comfort is ur eyes to see.
U can change manually in build.prop with a root access.
But, easily, there are some custom roms provide u with smaller dpi, but u will need root access also to flash custom rom.
Good luck in anything u plan to do, mate!

actually antique_sonic did answer about DPI.
DPI is dots per inch.
note has a dpi of 320.. lower the dpi.. smaller becomes the text and icons.
so i u have lots of icons in ur home screen.. lowering DPI to 280 or 240 will make them smaller and thus more spacious.
be careful cuz putting incompatible values will cause the phone not to boot.

u need to be in a kernel that supports it.. what kernel r u on?
did u fix permissions for the zip file it should be rw-r--r--

probably if u read all their Original Post, you will come to know all about them and then u will be able to write a thesis about kernels and decide which one is suitable for u dude

Depends on what you want to do with your phone, if you are fine with running stock rom, don't change it as there is no need for it.
CWM is useful when you use custom roms (both for the flash process/wipes and backups/restore), stock recovery is useful for nothing at all in that case.
So, IOW, if you don't intend on using custom roms, stick with stock recovery, if you intend on using custom roms, get CWM.
Clockwork mod recovery lets you do things like wipe factory data reset, wipe cache, battery status etc.... and can also install roms from zip files. Stock recovery can't do that. Hope I helped Also clockwork mod only works if you are rooted first I belive.

You can flash CWM and use stock but i have no idea why you would, you can't use backup or restore and you'll have no use for it what so ever.
You never need to flash a theme, you install it via market or downloaded .apk, if it's a custom theme you need a theme manager and you'll download and install themes via that manager.
You do NOT need CWM for anything you are trying to do.

You can use cwm on stock.
However, the great function isn't working on stock.
It means, even if you use cwm on stock, it has no difference with original (stock) recovery.

If you are going to use CWM anyway, might as well use custom rom...

Hi! I have a question. I have the last cmw touch but i cannot do a nandroid backup of the stock rom (2.3.4) because it can't mount system and cache. It's really not possible to make a backup of the stock rom? I'm asking this because i did some modifications like removing preinstalled apps and things like this and a new flash of the rom is not the same for me...

Have performed a full wipe in ICS? Try flashing a stock gb Firmware with odin and do a full wipe, then re root and flash the ROM.
Or if You still have CWM You can flash abyss kernel, reboot recovery and then re flash the ROM.

abyss kernel is GB, for u to stay safe during the wipe. The usual procedure is to flash abyss from CWM, reboot recovery (not the device), do a full wipe and then immdiately flash a custom rom.
CM9 has a safe kernel as is compiled from source and not from Samsung kernel release as some other custom roms do....just read the dev's threads. Take into consideration that not all custom kernel works with custom roms. Make sure that u choose matching pairs!...:good:
You can safely format data in cwm on cm9 kernel. However I suggest that you should reflash PA 0.5

By flashing a safe kernel like Goku, Speedmod or Notecore for your stock TW ICS you'll get a safe cwm...it is up to you which one you prefer, just try them out...
As I know Speedmod is very stable (no oc/uv but battery friendly), Goku is undervolted/not oc'ed (don't know the voltage table) with a 100MHz frequency, but it makes no sence 'cause 100MHz use the same voltage as 200MHz...and finally there is Notecore with an eye more on performance than battery life (but it is good as well regarding battery)...if you decide for Notecore, flash the STD-version first (not every Note can handle the oc'ed version).
To switch from TW ROM to CM9/CM10 it is recommended to go back to GB via PC Odin to do a fullwipe from there to safely switch over to CM9/CM10. Other's only flash Abyss (a GB-kernel) without going back to GB to do the full wipe, but I read something about that there COULD be some problems at the end...you'd NEVER flash CM9/CM10 directly from TW ICS stock or custom ROM!!!
Ok, so happy flashing for you

1.-> I don't think that OTA is possible for rooted devices, but via Kies (yes, this buggy software) you'll get official updates if rooted I've read...I always flash my FW via Mobile Odin. You can get the stock FW's on sammobile f.e.!
2.-> No, Notecore overwrites only the stock kernel...your apps'n'data should be safe! The built-in CWM of Notecore kernel shows the correct paths for internal and external sd!
3.-> Before flashing anything you'd allways backup your apps with TB f.e.! And before flashing the kernel, you'd wipe cache/dalvik cache (not DATA!) or use the jbroid kernel cleaning script (this wipes cache, dalvik and fragments of old kernel for a clean flash)! After a kernel flash there is no need for a restore backup if all went as it should.
When on Speedmod, Goku or Notecore you can also do a nandroid backup before flashing any other kernel (I allways do).
And just to clear things before you'll try to flash...You have a rooted device already???
ok thank you :thumbup:that clears my doubts, yes im already rooted with mobile odin but no cwm injected well m ready to try out..

Okay, here we go...:fingers-crossed:
If you stick with Notecore ( I think so, 'cause this kernel is amazing), you have to flash often 'cause Gavin (g.lewarne) allways is cooking a new creation of his outstanding kernel.

Of course you can flash and use Philz kernel. Obviously you aren't doing it in a correct way.
So please tell us how you installed the stock Roms and how you tried to install Philz kernel after this.

After installing the Rom with PC Odin copy the kernel (download the zip version) to your sd card and switch to the recovery.
Install the kernel there and reboot. After that you're rooted.
Please do not send me PM with questions like this - I do not like private tutorials - if you have a question post it in the forum - like you did here. Thanks.

Go to Here to read and find your answers. If you're still stuck, then ask again. Even though there a few custom roms that can be flashed through Odin, I suggest you avoid using it unless you want to flash stock firmwares.

Why would u choose 4.0 with all the emmc brick bug threat presents? Search the forum or google with the keyword "how to upgrade my N7000 from Gingerbread to Jellybean/ICS" n see what turns out.

Hello. Firstly, I'm sorry to say that I don't have much experience as mine came directly from ICS. I can suggest a long roundabout way which is to update your android vers. from GB To JB through Odin procedure first, then just flash philz safe kernel. and then flash any roms u want. Or if you just want stock JB, then u can download stock JB firmware n flash it through odin.
Edit : Go Here And watch the video and read. The link for the kernel provided includes CWM. After Installing CWM, you can directly flash philz safe kernel, reboot to recovery, do a clean wipe and formats (Follow OP of the rom you want to install)
