Hello everybody,
I think I have a serious problem with my SGS+. On the mainboard is something that looks like a small battery. It is located between the camera and the loudspeaker (see attached photo). The (assumingly) battery is covered with acid. Two days ago some water poured into my phone through the headphone jack, i recognized it the next day. Since then the power button started to react badly, until it died completely today. I cant even turn my phone on (i have no access to a computer). Might that problem has something to do with the thing on the mainboard? And if it is a battery, can i replace it (the type would be useful)?
Any advice would be helpful.
Thank you for reading my question!
jazzjoe
I am no expert on this, but my uneducated guess is that it is fluid related to a blown capacitor rather than a battery, at least i would draw that conclusion firmly if we were talking about a pc motherboard.

Thank you for your response. Well if it is a blown capacitor, what could be the consequence? By the way. When i woke up this morning the power button magically respondend, so right now i'm writing from the device. The button reacted a few more times (tried it with locking the device not shutting it down), then it stopped reacting again, that was 5hrs ago. Everything else works fine by now. Can i replace the power button unit? And if it is possible how?
Anyway thank you for your interest, i hope some ideas still to come.
Greetings
Jazzjoe

clean first, wrap in tissue paper and place it in dismantle form in a bag a rice for a day or two ...than try it
If it IS a blown capacitor, you could experience anything from failing to power up to cpu overheating. The liquid from capacitors is electrolyte and usually brownish in color.
I don't think it is possible to replace it by soldering a new one on like one could do with a pc motherboard.
Again, I might be far gone here, I would assume that the capacitors in a phone would be smaller than that and I haven't done any research on it.

Its a Battery-LI(2ND) Bat 501 Part NO: 4302-001180....But its best to solve water damage FIRST .
Download a i9000 technician manual to get details from My Android Collections it would be similar for i9001
Thank you very much, all of you have been a great help! So you believe the power button issue is caused by the water? Then i'll do the rice and tissue treatment and will later stick to the battery. Thanks again, i'll report the results.

Hello again,
after 24+ hours in rice i reassambled the phone. It took me 2 hours to start it. There must be some problem with the on off switch. I met a guy who has some experience with pcs and he said it might be a cold solder joint. What do you think? Might there be another explanation. Like i said, once the phone started it runs smooth. The battery by the way should be something like the cmos at a computer, so it wouldn't bother me if it is dead. Any ideas?
jazzjoe
Ps: is there any way to turn the phone on without a pc?
Sent from my GT-I9001 using xda app-developers app
There should be a couple of connectors that you could short with a piece of metal if only the power button itself is broken. But I have no idea where they are or if they're accessible at all.

Sounds a little bit dangerous to me. Any other ideas?

Frankly, it would take a lot more time to fully dry out a water damaged phone with Rice, as moisture stuck in between chips and contacts are to minute and in accessible to be fully removed. ( an XD posted a few days back, that he left his unrecoverable water damaged phone , and after 8 months it was working fine by itself) so .... it may need more time and I think compressed air is one way to get water out of headphone slots
The power switch is prone to damage as it is sandwiched in between the front and back covers of the phone , IF you did not notice it is can be bent or spliced by the forcing the back cover when you assemble it, since it is only a flex (film)
IF your problem came to be because of water damage than the problem is not due to switch but due to water causing the switch to fail, and its odd your battery is leaking, as this never happens in normal circumstances ...these batteries can last at least 5 to 10 years ...so you need to do some goggling to find out why a battery will leak
I have the same problem.
The phone is not mine, it's my brother's one.
I've opened it and the button battery is oxidized.
I have to ask my brother if he has water "problems".
Anyhow the phone doesn't charge anymore so it won't turn on. I have to find a way to charge battery and try to switch it on.
It will be a pity to trash it ;D

Hi everyone,
My little sister accidentally dropped my 2-week old Galaxy Tab. I bought the Tab from someone on craigslist so I don't have a receipt or anything which I guess means I won't even be able to try getting it replaced or fixed by Samsung.
I searched the web and didn't find any info from anyone with similar problem so I don't even know if there is anything I can try or where to start.
The Tab itself appears fine physically, the screen did not even crack, but I cannot get it to power on.
Any advice, guidance, tips, tricks?! Anything at all will be greatly appreciated.
Keeping my fingers crossed...thanks for your time.
I think your only hope is to open the tab, to see if something get loose (battery etc...)
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
ok so I just pried the tablet open to check if battery was loose as you suggested and found something very interesting - nothing appeared loose but i noticed some small drops of water so i think the kid might have actually spilled something on my tablet (instead of or aside from dropping it)!
Now what?! Any advice on possible water damage? Is this irreparable?
if you're sure its water dmg, you could try putting the tab in a bag of rice for a couple days to dry it out, then try again to turn it on.
Other than that i guess you could look on ebay for a replacement part what you expect was water damaged...
Unfortunately for you a tab can be under water or under warranty but not both, and dropped tab=dropped warranty. The good news there is that you could still probably contact samsung to get a quote for fixing it. Its not a warranty repair so you'd be paying them either way.
edit: and if you've already pried it open and can remove the battery while drying it out - i'd do that. If it shorted it could start bulging or something and cause more damage. I second the let it dry in rice or even air dry for a while. Then if there is no sign of battery damage, charge it for a bit (keeping an eye on it for shorts) and see if you get the charging screen or if it powers on.
I have dropped many phone in water over the years. In fact i dropped my tab in my pets water dish.
If you havent damaged it beyind repair by opening it, my fix is to get a big ziplock bag, fill it with rice, bury the tab in the rice for a day. Leave in cabnet. Rice will suck all the moisture out.
Oh and by the way since you have it open, can you check what kind if internalbsd card it has? Does it look replaceable?
Hit the thanks button if I.have helped.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA Premium App
ok I took it apart carefully following a tutorial vid on youtube. I cleaned what i'm assuming is liquid damage residue (white powdery substance?) with electronics cleaner and a qtip. Then buried it a container of rice and put it in a cabinet just as you guys suggested. Do you think 24 hours is enough time to let it sit before trying it?
I'm not sure how long the water was in there because there were only a few drops that hadn't dried and then the white powdery stuff which I assume is from the liquid. All info I came across gave procedures for treating electronics immediately after contact with liquid so not sure if this will work since it seems to have been sitting in there for a bit. I'm crossing my fingers and will post back.
sserpentine: what is an internalbsd? let me know what to look for and I'll take pics and post here for you
Lol, replacing the internal sd would be amazing! I can only imagine the possibilities.

love the website, long time troll..some of the stuff the devs do here is astounding and way over my head
so about 2 wks ago my fam and i decided to turn my SIL wedding trip into a vacation. long story short, i was excited to take our 1yr old in the pool (an hot tub) and took my phone with me..we were in for about 30mins. after i realized what i did i let my phone dry for about a day and tried to turn it back on..upon doing so i heard a sizzling noise coming from the battery so pulled it and let it dry for another 2 days. i didnt have access to rice as i read albeit too late. as of right now my phone turns on, seems to be just as quick as before, connects to 3g, but not to wifi which is has before without any problems however the battery doesnt hold a charge to save its life (takes excessively long to charge and loses it very quickly with minimal use) also both the screen and battery get warmer than i've felt them get before..battery stat ranges from 104-114 deg F constantly.
all at&t said they can do is let me buy a blackbery curve for $199 cuz i didnt have insurance and am not up for renewal til jan 2012..i was thinking about trying a replacement OEM battery to see if that fixes the heat issue..i dont really know about how to fix the wifi issue as i wouldnt doubt that the chips got fried..oh yeah im running stock 2.2, unrooted
i thought i could tough it out with my work blackberry torch til january..but after a week, i just can't stand this thing anymore..does anyone have any ideas/pointers/tips/help they can offer?
thanks in advance.
Your phone was under water for 30 minutes and still turns on? That's wild. Maybe try a new battery?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
+1 on trying a new battery, it more than likely got shorter out and that's whats causing the overheating and poor capacity life. In regards to the Wifi, I would try doing a factory reset or maybe just re-installing the rom altogether. It may sound like a long shot but it might resolve it. Hope you get it working.
All of the above and if it was mine I would start with at least partial disassembly and drying, passive like rice treatment. There are too many tight joints inside that 30 minutes immersion might have moistened.
Try fxr wifi fix from the market

I wouldn't turn on a phone that overheats. The hardware problem needs to be corrected before the software is applied.
I'm just amazed that the thing didn't completely short. I would concur with the suggestion to swap the battery... But I would first partially disassemble it (for airflow) and stick it in a sealed baggie with rice or silica desaicant for a couple of days.
The way I usually handle wet electronics is the same way I handle dirty electronics. Remove the battery and give it a bath in rubbing alcohol which will displace the water and dry in about an hour or two. It ends up clean and dry.
My captivate took a much shorter dip in the dog's water bowl and initially exhibited multiple problems. I left in a container of rice for about 24 hours and it ran like new again. If you haven't tried this already it may be worth a shot. There may still be some moisture in there causing problems.
forgot to check up on this...due to work i havent gotten around to buying a new battery yet. but OEM batteries are about $17 on amazon. but like i said before, other than the overheating/battery issue it works fine evidenced in running pandora for about 3hrs until it completely died. 71% - 0% in 3hrs of streaming music. the rubbing alcohol idea sounds pretty interesting, but i'm pretty reluctant to getting it wet again.
in my head i always assumed the phone would continue to keep working since there are no moving parts internally, just allow the electronics to thoroughly dry..i'll try that app out once i charge the phone up again or finally order a new battery.
Thanks for everyone's input
Rubbing alcohol does not get the electronics "WET" as you would traditionally think of wet. It dries so quickly it's more like getting the electronics alcohol'd.. It only takes a good shake off and an hour or two to dry completely... where water under a chip might take a week or a month to dry.

Your testing with usb and battery sort of doomed it...
You should attempt to let it dry with battery removed first.
Besides, get a new phone, it's probably gone if it doesn't work after drying the innards

Freezing the battery will not do NOTHING, instead of fix a problem, it can explode or get wet inside, because the battery doesn't allow these low temperatures. Something you can do is diassemble the Note and get it dry for 24 or 48 hours. Then clean with alcohol and a toothbrush every ribbon connector (male and female) and ,with pacience and precaution, the motherboard, usb connector, headphone jack and every single part. Put a new battery inside. That will make the phone boot without problem. Obviously it maybe is going to have sequels. The salt may have affected the screen, the speakers could stop working, and even if you get it repaired, uour phone will never be the same. Next time, be more caution with your phone and the water. Good luck!
Sorry my bad english.

Even the xperia z won't survive a dip in salt water
It is water proof in fresh water only, to elaborate, salt in water = trouble
My cousins SAMSUNG CHAMP(pre historic phone) also swam on the see.. When she realized it is in the water, she picked it up and texted.lol
It worked until the battery heated and I advised her to remove the battery..
It took her PreHistoric phone $8 to be fixed..

The thread owner wasn't online since he started the thread...
My guess would be that the phone is gone for good. The only chance to save a phone that fell into water is to immediately remove the battery (avoiding possible short circuits). Then it would be necessary to disassemble it and completely dry the device. In case of salt water it would even be mandatory to clean each and every part of the phone, including all connectors and the whole mainboard. Do not try to boot the phone until it's completely dry. Even the slightest humidity could cause short circuits. The mentioned steps do not guarantee that the phone can be saved. But there is a real chance. I myself managed to save 2 phones, one fell into a toilet, the other into a lake.

Hello everybody,
my phone has been dropped into a pool for a couple of minutes, but first it seemed to be all right.
The first problem was, that the phone gone crazy, and every time i've wanted to lock it, it started the camera app. Then a couple of hours later the phone went into safe mode, and the vol down and the power buttons doesn't worked. After that i've dissasembled the phone and wiped the things around with some tissue thingy that was soaked in alcohol. It was some medical thing. Then i've put it back together, and it switched on, but the battery doesn't charge, or not every time, but at least the phone is not in safe mode anymore and the buttons are all working properly, the only thing what isn't working is the wifi. At the moment i'm only struggleing with battery, because most of the time it's not charging it only shows a battery with a question mark in the middle, but the green led is on and the phone is doing this vibration when you turn it on, but it's not booting, the screen stays black. I can reach the fastboot mode and the recovery but not the system. Can anyone help me what might be the problem? Software or hardware?
I hope that i was quite clear.
Cheers
It can really be both SW and HW. Basically it´s HW.
Once you do proper cleaning process too late and not very well, or you don´t do your celaning properly, you are going to have you device dead earlier or later. You have to disassemble the PCB to its primes, take of the shieldings of circuity, and clean it with some alcohol and tootbrush or better ESD protective brush gently but deeply. Then, you need to dry it for 48 hours in 50-60 degrees and then see what happened after assy. Also SW can be damaged, so you can try to flash it (load new ROM). If there is no success, it´s simply dead.
Your phone has oxidized due the water.
Go to Motorola and ask if they'll change your phone. You maybe lucky and get a brand new one.

This phone is NOT water resistant, only the screen is...
By the way, if any oxidization is found on your phone, warranty won't work.
Do we have some official statement? I saw in few reviews, that they mean (also) internals - whole PCB coating....
Sorry for the late answer...
If a phone is fully waterproof, then it is a strong marketing argument.
Look on the Motorola website, nothing talks about this. On the contrary, the Sony Xperia Z explicitly shows this ability, just look at its advertisement.
The Razr i is only splash proof: you can drop a small amount of liquid on the screen, it won't hurt the phone.
That's the only thing that is true.
Reporting the contrary is dangerous for users, beware of this when you read a review.
Hi Guys,
So last night I accidentally put my phone in a glass of water. Only the lower part of the was phone submerged under water ( the charging port and lower speakers) not more than 10 seconds. As i was driving then i forgot to switch off the phone and when i reached home after a couple of minutes, i dried the whole phone using tissues. The main blunder i created was that i didnt switch off the phone and used it for 15 minutes , tested out its speakers and stuff. After some time, the phone showed low battery and i started charging it and in a couple of minutes it turned off. It wasnt charging at all. Also i dried my phone using hair dryer for 5 minutes. Then i put the phone in uncooked rice for the whole night and the next morning i tried to switch it on but no success. But when i tried to charge it a dark red light started blinking and later the charging light started but when i switched on the phone , after the htc logo appeared the phone switched off again. From now i am not able to even charge it , no light comes , i think the phones dead now.
Also when i checked the liquid damage indicator, it hasnt turned red which it is supposed to if your phone is damaged my liquid.
So can i know that what should i do now? I am still under the HTC one year warranty but i dont know whether they will repair my phone or not?
Leave it in the rice for a few days and hope for the best. I would have left it in there longer before trying to turn it on. Damage may be done.....

Well alcohol displaces water.... but I'm talking like 90% alcohol. Whiskey is 40% alcohol and 60% water(this varies of course), but in the an electrical circuit being wet in the presence of an electromagnetic field(in your case your phone being turned on having a whiskey/water mix in the circuit), the copper ions in on the board actually start to branch out and cause micro short circuits on the electrical boards. Long story short, if your phone is not working now, the damage is most likely already done.

I don't believe what anyone says about rice, rubbing alcohol etc any more after having my old i9300 at ten-twelve meters deep in highly oxygenated salt water for 22hrs (long story :-\ ) and being able to resurrect it after a day of pulling it to pieces (pcbs and all) and washing the corrosion off with just water and a toothbrush the HTC one is the replacement phone I ordered straight after assuming that the i9300 was surely dead lol... So I'd recommend watching some tutorials on pulling it to pieces without damaging the components, cleaning everything inside with just water and a toothbrush and drying with a hairdryer (whilst still in pieces) before reassembling. I bet that it'll work without any problems, just make sure to carefully study the tutorials
Edit: this disassembly video looks pretty good, I only watched a few minutes into it but the guy seems straight to the point. Definitely worth a look http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyrxa23OwME

Actually i tried to charge it 30 mins after it got wet. Then again the next day after 12 hours. Now from the past 3 days most of the time its in rice. Yesterday i kept it on charging and after an hour, a battery icon was visible on the screen and the led light was blinking orange. Then someone advised me to stop it and keep the phone in rice for more time.
What should i be doing now? Is there any hope left?
Your impatience has killed your phone. You should have let it dry before having electricity move at all through your phone. The water has short circuited that high current of electricity when you tried charging it and has most likely corrupted a lot of the hardware inside your phone.

You probably killed the battery and the board, if you want to still try something else, replace the battery and see if it powers up.

So now the phone only responds to charging after keeping it in rice for 2 more days. There is an orange light blinking and sometimes a battery icon is visible. I am not able to switch on the phone.
Also are there any additional water indicators besides the one in the camera flash which is still yellow?
What should i be doing now?

Yes there are water indicators in the phone itself. You cant see them, but they're there. (If you look closely in a disassembly video, you can see it.)
If you want my opinion on this whole thing, just give up. You're phone is dead. Give it to HTC and pay for the repair. I think it's around $150.
