Issues after water damage - RAZR i Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody,
my phone has been dropped into a pool for a couple of minutes, but first it seemed to be all right.
The first problem was, that the phone gone crazy, and every time i've wanted to lock it, it started the camera app. Then a couple of hours later the phone went into safe mode, and the vol down and the power buttons doesn't worked. After that i've dissasembled the phone and wiped the things around with some tissue thingy that was soaked in alcohol. It was some medical thing. Then i've put it back together, and it switched on, but the battery doesn't charge, or not every time, but at least the phone is not in safe mode anymore and the buttons are all working properly, the only thing what isn't working is the wifi. At the moment i'm only struggleing with battery, because most of the time it's not charging it only shows a battery with a question mark in the middle, but the green led is on and the phone is doing this vibration when you turn it on, but it's not booting, the screen stays black. I can reach the fastboot mode and the recovery but not the system. Can anyone help me what might be the problem? Software or hardware?
I hope that i was quite clear.
Cheers

It can really be both SW and HW. Basically it´s HW.
Once you do proper cleaning process too late and not very well, or you don´t do your celaning properly, you are going to have you device dead earlier or later. You have to disassemble the PCB to its primes, take of the shieldings of circuity, and clean it with some alcohol and tootbrush or better ESD protective brush gently but deeply. Then, you need to dry it for 48 hours in 50-60 degrees and then see what happened after assy. Also SW can be damaged, so you can try to flash it (load new ROM). If there is no success, it´s simply dead.

Your phone has oxidized due the water.
Go to Motorola and ask if they'll change your phone. You maybe lucky and get a brand new one.

They only advertise the phone as water resistant I doubt they'll replace it if it was dropped in a pool

This phone is NOT water resistant, only the screen is...
By the way, if any oxidization is found on your phone, warranty won't work.

Do we have some official statement? I saw in few reviews, that they mean (also) internals - whole PCB coating....

Sorry for the late answer...
If a phone is fully waterproof, then it is a strong marketing argument.
Look on the Motorola website, nothing talks about this. On the contrary, the Sony Xperia Z explicitly shows this ability, just look at its advertisement.
The Razr i is only splash proof: you can drop a small amount of liquid on the screen, it won't hurt the phone.
That's the only thing that is true.
Reporting the contrary is dangerous for users, beware of this when you read a review.

I9001 Dead battery on mainboard?

Hello everybody,
I think I have a serious problem with my SGS+. On the mainboard is something that looks like a small battery. It is located between the camera and the loudspeaker (see attached photo). The (assumingly) battery is covered with acid. Two days ago some water poured into my phone through the headphone jack, i recognized it the next day. Since then the power button started to react badly, until it died completely today. I cant even turn my phone on (i have no access to a computer). Might that problem has something to do with the thing on the mainboard? And if it is a battery, can i replace it (the type would be useful)?
Any advice would be helpful.
Thank you for reading my question!
jazzjoe
I am no expert on this, but my uneducated guess is that it is fluid related to a blown capacitor rather than a battery, at least i would draw that conclusion firmly if we were talking about a pc motherboard.
Sent from horseback.
Thank you for your response. Well if it is a blown capacitor, what could be the consequence? By the way. When i woke up this morning the power button magically respondend, so right now i'm writing from the device. The button reacted a few more times (tried it with locking the device not shutting it down), then it stopped reacting again, that was 5hrs ago. Everything else works fine by now. Can i replace the power button unit? And if it is possible how?
Anyway thank you for your interest, i hope some ideas still to come.
Greetings
Jazzjoe

clean first, wrap in tissue paper and place it in dismantle form in a bag a rice for a day or two ...than try it
If it IS a blown capacitor, you could experience anything from failing to power up to cpu overheating. The liquid from capacitors is electrolyte and usually brownish in color.
I don't think it is possible to replace it by soldering a new one on like one could do with a pc motherboard.
Again, I might be far gone here, I would assume that the capacitors in a phone would be smaller than that and I haven't done any research on it.

Its a Battery-LI(2ND) Bat 501 Part NO: 4302-001180....But its best to solve water damage FIRST .
Download a i9000 technician manual to get details from My Android Collections it would be similar for i9001
Thank you very much, all of you have been a great help! So you believe the power button issue is caused by the water? Then i'll do the rice and tissue treatment and will later stick to the battery. Thanks again, i'll report the results.

Hello again,
after 24+ hours in rice i reassambled the phone. It took me 2 hours to start it. There must be some problem with the on off switch. I met a guy who has some experience with pcs and he said it might be a cold solder joint. What do you think? Might there be another explanation. Like i said, once the phone started it runs smooth. The battery by the way should be something like the cmos at a computer, so it wouldn't bother me if it is dead. Any ideas?
jazzjoe
Ps: is there any way to turn the phone on without a pc?
Sent from my GT-I9001 using xda app-developers app
There should be a couple of connectors that you could short with a piece of metal if only the power button itself is broken. But I have no idea where they are or if they're accessible at all.

Sounds a little bit dangerous to me. Any other ideas?

Frankly, it would take a lot more time to fully dry out a water damaged phone with Rice, as moisture stuck in between chips and contacts are to minute and in accessible to be fully removed. ( an XD posted a few days back, that he left his unrecoverable water damaged phone , and after 8 months it was working fine by itself) so .... it may need more time and I think compressed air is one way to get water out of headphone slots
The power switch is prone to damage as it is sandwiched in between the front and back covers of the phone , IF you did not notice it is can be bent or spliced by the forcing the back cover when you assemble it, since it is only a flex (film)
IF your problem came to be because of water damage than the problem is not due to switch but due to water causing the switch to fail, and its odd your battery is leaking, as this never happens in normal circumstances ...these batteries can last at least 5 to 10 years ...so you need to do some goggling to find out why a battery will leak
I have the same problem.
The phone is not mine, it's my brother's one.
I've opened it and the button battery is oxidized.
I have to ask my brother if he has water "problems".
Anyhow the phone doesn't charge anymore so it won't turn on. I have to find a way to charge battery and try to switch it on.
It will be a pity to trash it ;D

Xperia Z Water Damaged

Hello there xda community... I am new to this forum and have just succesfully managed to wreck my Xperia Zs screen.
I have only wanted to clean my phone under the sink (its rated for low jets of water) wiped it dry and then after a few minutes, fractal structures if I may call it, started to creep up all over the screen.
It started slowly from the corners jumping all across the screen in seconds. (very weird)
I have uped some screen shots! This is my second Z i got. My first one, I exchanged it because it had burned pixels on the screen with which I could not live with.
I just dont seem to be lucky with this phone! :/
I had all ports closed and no water was detected by the detectors. I believe the leak came from the power or volume buttons but who knows?
I feel like my trust to Sony is broken.
I have seen others put it under the pool with no probs... but well someone has to be the lucky one! :/
I think am gonna turn back to my old Nokia 3330!
P.S do you think that I stand a chance of exchanging it since no water detection was triggered? Am going to try any way.

sorry to see that man, the best thing you can do is try and explain your reason...you can try to let it dry and exchange it.
Since under flaps there is no red colored markers, I belive you can get replacement. It looks like it was manufacturing defect phone and this should not happen. I was scared to put my second XZ under watter, feeling of flaps was like they were used and not able to close as they should, so I made small test step by step, but now I am sure it works. And yes, as some people use it under water in pools, I don't plan to do that hehe.
Wish you luck with service!

So sorry to hear that. I hope you can get it replaced.
After playing around with it under the tap and a little bit of water to test the resistance on day 1, I decided to avoid water whenever possible.

That's smart. I can say it is quite water proof however, I had a scare because the main speaker took nearly 12 hours to dry before it started working again. (I researched and found out this is normal as water gets in the speaker. So no more
It's nice knowing that during catastrophic accidents and heavy rain this phone will be functional though!
sorry to hear that this has happened.
That is definitely water ingress into the screen. since the front and back are glued into the frame it looks like that's where the failure occurred and water entered that way.
Since the water indicators are still white I would stand your ground until they give you a replacement.
Same scenario, my phone is under going rice treatment. I'm encountering a weird problem, my phone's LED went red and vibrated 3 times and went off. The cycle goes on and on and its about 5 hours since. Any way to resolve it? :crying:
Edit: Unable to get to fast boot, when unplugged the phone stops the cycle.
As said before, if the water ingress tapes are still intact (white) then take the phone for a warranty replacement.
To the OP - If and when you get a replacement, I would suggest not exposing the phone deliberately to water, especially not just to clean it. Get a microfibre cloth, for goodness sake!

I precisely lock all the flaps and wash my Z from time to time.
No problems whatsoever, the only thing is that the loudspeaker get's stuck with water and you have to wait
for it for some time to come back to normal loudness.

Thanks for the advices! I took it back today and got a replacement. I didnt say anything about the phone getting in contact with water. Infact they didnt even ask. They checked the tapes and looked suprised because to them it looked like something between a crack and a smudge though it didnt have the symptoms of a crack. (probably because of the sharp lines formed on the screen?) I just kept my mouth shut and was waiting for their question about water which never came. Anyway it ended with a happy end and I got my 3rd Xperia Z within 2 weeks! Awesome!!
So the moral of the story is do not get overconfident with water resistant stuff!
After this am thinking that I could have bought the S4 without all the disturbing flaps, since from now on am going to avoid water in every way. I had a quick look at it when I was at the shop...it really does not feel like a 5" screen comparing to the Z, but the screen is just a bit to colorful for my taste.
I am sure we will be seeing more of these water damages as time passes...
Water Resistance on the Z is more of a marketing "trick" than a reliable feature!
Hello, community.
My Xperia Z also got wet (for 1200th time) but this time is different than any previous - seems like water got inside my Xperia...so, I am not able to turn my phone on.
Actually, it was working for 15 minutes and just after shot down.
I used hair dryer...no luck, get reboot signal once and that's it.
An hour ago I bought some rice, placed Xperia into it...so, I will waiting for few days, who knows, maybe It is going to come back to life again
If so - great...If it doesn't - ok, I can live without it

if u r sure all ports were closed underwater just take it to official service for replacement.

Hey OP, I had the same problem after water damage. Just keep using your phone like normal, it'll start turning white/negative less often, and after 3 weeks or so, your phone will be back to normal!

Water damage isn't covered in the warranty, and it's expensive to repair. When my phone got water damaged (happened less than 48 hours after I got it), I put it in a bag of rice with the 2 smaller flaps open for a few days. That didn't help at all, so I decided to leave it in my cupboard with all the flaps open for a day or two. Surprisingly, this took care of all the visible condensation. I charged my phone after this, and there seemed to be no problem. I continued to use the phone like nothing happened, and I kept using it even while the screen was white.
I've had my Xperia Z for almost a month now, and the white screen issue is entirely gone. I also had other problems like condensation in the camera, a malfunctioning proximity sensor, and an external speaker that didn't work. These problems are gone too.
The only signs of damage left on my phone are condensation in the flash and a little silver blob below my screen (no clue what this is, but it doesn't seem to affect the phone).
I'd say leave your phone somewhere airy with ALL of the flaps open for a couple of days, and then try charging it. DO NOT USE A BLOW DRYER OR A VACUUM TO TRY TO REMOVE WATER, AS THIS WILL RESULT IN HEAT/STATIC DAMAGE.
By the way, how many of your water ingress indicators have gone red?

there 1 indicator have gone red, at charge port, but i really sure i've closed it before i brought it in to the water...
so if there is technical error when installation the port, are the warranty still valid ?
i just put my xperia in my bedroom and left with the ports opened, i hope the water inside my lcd can evaporate. I've the same problem with you, there are some silver blob below in my screen too, look like water behind the lcd. almost a week i never charge my phone, i'm afraid there will be shorting inside. so can i charge my xperia now ?
I put my iPod touch on the dash of my car for a day. It dried it out. No sign of water damage. It was in my pocket of shorts and my wife washed it in the laundry.

Yeah, but your iPod isn't held together by a heat-sensitive adhesive. The Xperia Z is. So that's not exactly the best idea...

Hey, don't mention it
Wow, that's funny. It's the same exact water indicator that's turned red on my phone.
The flaps on your phone could be faulty, and if they are, you are still under warranty. Next to your headphone flap, there is actually a Waterproof Test Hole, which Sony Service Centers use to test if your phone's waterproof capabilities are okay. The test hole can't be seen as there is a piece of plastic that covers it.
The thing is that it's more than likely that your phone will pass the waterproof test, and that your flaps came loose underwater when you were taking the video (pretty sure this is what happened to me as well).
Oh, and I can confirm that the silver blob is not water, but actually some sort of corrosion. It happened to my previous phone as well, and when I took it apart there was no water at in it at all.
Go ahead and charge it, you've got nothing to lose. Your warranty is void, and it's not like your phone will work without charge. Good luck!

Nexus 5 Water Damage Thread

THIS THREAD IS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE A WATER DAMAGED NEXUS 5, OR HAVE JUST DROPPED THEIR NEXUS 5 INTO WATER. READ NOTE BEFORE REPAIRING
NOTE: The water indicator (shown as the red square in the photos) is located just above the sim card tray. It is only a few millimeters away from the edge of the phone which makes it VERY SENSITIVE to water. It turns from white to pink/red if it has been exposed to water.
My phone dropped into the toilet and was submerged for only 0.5 -1 second. This was enough for the indicator to go off. If you do not want to open up the phone, check the sim card as mine had small pink/red residue on it after I took out the sim card.
The location of the indicator makes it very easy for the indicator to go off. I can easily see how rain, extreme humidity, or even a small pool of tap water could make it go off if the sim tray is not inserted properly, let alone if it was submerged.

REPAIRS:
Read links/stories above for steps to recover Nexus 5, my method has not proved successful thus far. Please read the thread for other methods too.
The general consensus is to:
1. MOST IMPORTANT: Turn the off phone immediately. If your phone is off, don't attempt to turn it on or you will risk damaging the internals.
2. Use a cloth/paper towel to immediately soak up water around phone.
If you do not want to open up the phone for warranty purposes:
3. Place phone in an airtight container with activated silica gels, or with rice for few days.
Note: This is not the best method if the phone was submerged for a relatively long period or if you spilt coffee/soft drink on your phone. There is a high risk of corrosion with this as the water may be trapped inside for a long period of time causing internal parts to corrode. Other methods have proven more successful. Alternatively people have had success (in this thread, please read) by drying out their phones via traditional methods like using blowdryers etc. when the device was exposed to water for a SHORT period of time. Make sure you err on the side of caution when using heating methods as to not damage the internals, never use anything that would make the device too hot.
OR
If you don't mind opening up phone (fairly certain indicator has gone off and want to void warranty). If I could go back in time I would probably use this method:
3. Open up the phone by prying off the back (method in the link above), remove the battery and carefully assess the areas and components that have collected water. Remove the water and dry it out as much as possible. This may be enough if the phone was not fully submerged.
For more serious cases: For coke/coffee/saltwater or if the phone has just been sitting there a long time after water exposure:
- A lot of people have had success by washing the phone with deionised water first and then submerging it in pure ethanol (without battery). This serves to clean the phone of the contaminants and to prevent corrosion. (especially if you dunked in it coffee/soft drink). Theoretically the water/ethanol would not conduct electricity due to the lack of impurities in them.
-If you have left the phone untouched for a while without cleaning it, there may be some build up of corrosion. People suggest scrubbing the white corroded area off using small/light brush strokes of a soft bristled toothbrush either after the wash phase (deionised water) or just after the submerging phase (ethanol)
Many different methods suggested in links above. Make sure you read through the thread, there are various success stories here too.
My case:
As soon as I dropped it into the toilet, I turned it off straight away. I dried it off with a paper towel and stuck it in rice for a few days. Then I moved to a sealed container of silica crystals for about 5 days. Then I let it dry on table for another 2. Then it did not turn on, unresponsive. Did not charge or get recognised via USB. This was probably not an optimal repair method. The methods above may be more useful. But if you know the indicator has gone off, it would be best to open up the case straight away to drain the water out.
Then I opened up my Nexus 5 (after a week of deciding what to do). I could see small amount of corrosion around the sim tray area, usb insert area and others around the phone. Then I dipped the motherboard and into a bowl of isopropyl, enough to submerge it for 5-10 minutes. Then used gentle movements of a toothbrush to focus on corroded areas. I am now just letting it dry.
I will update this thread if the repairs are successful.
Update: Phone is still unresponsive, it may be that the battery is dead or one of the parts do not work at all. Any suggestions?
UPDATE 2: Ended up just buying a new Nexus 5 back in March, old one is just sitting here in the cupboard still unresponsive. I may try to buy a battery to see if it's a battery problem but for now I'll just leave it. Not sure if it would sell much for parts.
Please feel free to post other helpful resources or your own experiences on saving a water damaged nexus 5.
NOTE: I am from Australia. The cost to repair a water damaged Nexus 5 was a fixed cost of $290 AUD (16 or 32gb) if you send the phone to manufacturer (LG). Water damage is not covered under warranty but LG still accepts repairs out of warranty at a fixed price. The lady on the phone said that they would replace the motherboard. Opening up your device will void your warranty so please be aware of this before you try to repair it.
NOTE 2: If you live in the US, google has confirmed it does one time replacements no matter what. Read below: http://gizmodo.com/google-will-apparently-replace-your-nexus-5-no-matter-h-1630258357

At the time I was still considering whether to send it back for repairs. Pulling the battery out requires taking the phone apart and voiding warranty. But looking back I probably should have opened it up straight away.
Phone is still unresponsive, is there any way to check which individual module or part of the phone doesn't work? I have a feeling some are working while others are not. Do electronic repairs shops have tools to test this?
Parts are easy to obtain: http://www.etradesupply.com/lg/android-models/lg-nexus-5.html but it is just a matter of knowing which part to get, that is assuming the main motherboard/CPU is still functioning.

Yeah it didn't turn on after I took it out from the silica gels. Also after I cleaned/submerged the phone parts in isopropyl and reassembled it doesn't turn on at all. I tried plugging into computer too but it didn't work either.

The computer did not recognize the phone? Most times when a phone is off the computer would at least make a sound once plugged in. How was your battery life before the incident? Was the phone almost dead?
I would probably take the phone back apart, clean it one more time with the alcohol and a soft brush toothbrush, dry it with a blow dryer (on its coolest setting so you don't damage anything) and then put it back together.
Use this site as a guide and do a side by side comparison. Maybe you forgot to plug a cable back in. http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+5+Teardown/19016
Good luck!

No I tried it on a few computers, didn't manage to make it get a sound or anything. Battery life was normal before I dropped it. I can't remember what percentage it was on exactly when I dropped it, if I had to guess i think it was on 10-30%?
Yeah I'll give it another go with the cleaning. Should I submerge the screen in isopropyl too? I've only done the motherboard, bottom grill and cables so far. I left the battery out.
Also with the brushing I'm scared I'll break something: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QHn3ItE7ME But am i meant to use as much force as this guy in the video? I was way more gentle than that
If its a soft tooth brush and only a soft tooth brush then I'd say go in for the kill. Lol. That's about how much force I used on my Galaxy Nexus when it had water damage and I recovered it with no issues at all! Use your discretion though. Use as much force as your comfortable with and make sure to thoroughly dry it. I'd also clean the battery connector but with a DRY brush. Maybe that's where the issue lay.

Were there number 2 floaters when you dropped it? Did you soak it in rose water?

Little bit of trolling, sorry,
Feel really sorry for the guy who lost his nexus 5 coz of water damage, but I couldn't help but giggle at times at the process he was making himself go through trying to save the nexus, all because of a 0.5 to 1 second of water. Here is the process that I went through with my phone.
Dropped my Xperia Z Ultra a few days ago in a bubble bath tub, then spent about 5 - 8 seconds just looking for it, because of the bubbles.
Then I found it, Wiped it off immediately on my chest, it was soaked, then I turned it on. then I got into the bath tub with it, then watched some YouTube, visited xda forums, after that decided to watch some porn, then my wife started banging at the door "what the hell are you watching!?" then I got out, Wiped phone with towel. Then ate some chicken with rice, with my phone next to it not inside it.
Anyway think the nexus 5 is a gorgeous phone, that I would of have definitely wanted it if I hadn't experienced relaxing bath tub times, that all started with the original xperia z.
I still envy people that I had seen using it, I think it's the most beautifully designed phone ever created. With Sony and Htc as close second.

Are the chances of a short circuit fairly high in circumstances like this? Any way to confirm if all components are dead? I'm assuming that would probably kill off the motherboard/cpu so cleaning it won't do much in that case. But might i'll give it another clean just in case

How about getting wet with Salt Water !
Hi all, great thread, glad I found it. Want to hear another "got wet" story?
My Nexus 5 (and an iphone5) was in an Outdoor Products "dry sack" on an ocean boat ride in Brazil. This one at outdoorproducts.com, their 3-pack-ultimate-dry-sack
Caution! It was properly sealed, but still let saltwater in through the seams from splashes. The phones basically sloshed around in a cup of water before I knew it. Defective or wrong material to trust. In any case, the phone didn't work after, dead. To repeat, neither phone was ever submerged or dunked.
So I didn't have any isopropyl alcohol, but here they have something similar, ethyl alcohol (for cleaning, usually 46% solution). I knew that the rest was "hydrated" so I searched for a more pure form; found a 98% bottle. It is very hard to find (banned from sale because flammable) but I found a source. So I submerged the phones in this ethyl alcohol for 5 min. then let them sit in rice inside one of this company's "dry boxes" (which I should've used instead, kick to rear).
After 2 days, my Nexus 5 turns on! And, charges... and connects to wifi and receives messages. but the phone screen is like a tie-dye t-shirt. "Touches" won't unlock the screen, so I can't access apps to retrieve data. And, the phone won't connect over USB to the Android file manager.
I'm hoping a technician/hacker back in MA can open the phone, take out the 16gb internal storage (Sandisk SDIN8DE4 16 GB NAND flash) and get my valuable photos/videos off !
---------- Post added at 05:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:36 PM ----------
I was just googling... from ifixit's forum a moderator said that it was possible to read data from a NAND chip. He mentioned some sites, and from their I found a data firm, eprovided.com -- fyi this is no endorsement. I'll have to call them Monday to see if they can do chips from wet phones!
@placker have you tried hooking it to a different computer? Have you had the android file manager connected with this device before this incident, or did you install it just now? Have you tried booting to fastboot?
Just curious if it recognizes via fastboot

thanks for the reply -- the phone had previously worked fine with the Android File Manager (used on Mac). That was my big hope... but alas no.
I don't know how to do fastboot... I've started/hard-shutdown the thing many times. Believe it or not, the phone's alarm clock just went of at 8pm. No way to shut if off since I can't bypass [what I think is] the lock screen. I can see the wacked video screen changing in response button presses of volume or the 10-second power button press.
I'll google the technique...

Do you have a PC in your home? I am curious to see if anything gets recognized on a PC. My Mac (I am a Mac user) is finicky while my windows device works fine.
If u can get it recognized in fastboot you may be able to pull your data without issue...
If I were you I would first see if I could get it to be recognized on a windows PC

Screen replacement after water damage?

So... teardown videos on YouTube fooled me and I thought that this phone is water-resistant. I washed it under tap water (multiple times, actually). After the last time, the screen stopped working, but the phone appears to be OK — even the touch clearly works. I've already disassembled the phone and cleaned the connectors with 95% alcohol, but the screen still doesn't work. Is buying a replacement screen and hoping for a cheap repair the smartest thing to do? After all, the motherboard can also be borked.
EDIT: the screen is completely black

I've replaced the screen after dropping the phone. Was only a small chip in the bottom corner, didn't look much at all, but the screen was completely dead. I was in a similar dilemma of wanting to be sure it was only the screen before spending about $100 on a screen. I booted into fastboot, then connected to a PC, then done the fastboot devices command, which returned a valid ID, so I knew the phone wasn't completely dead. Also connecting to the PC and booting the phone, the PC recognised the phone was connected, though without being able to unlock the phone I couldn't check anything else. That was enough for me to go ahead and order the screen. Now everything works fine.

Thanks for sharing your experience! In my case, the phone clearly isn't dead, but I wonder whether some circuitry on the motherboard that's responsible for making the display work might be fried. Well... if that's the case, I can always sell the replacement screen after testing, but I'm not sure that someone will buy it for a good price.
Also... where did you get your screen from? On AliExpress, they are as cheap as $50, but most of the cheap ones are clearly some fake crap — TFT/IPS LCD, smaller than the original, fingerprint scanner not working... I guess I need to buy something more expensive. Have you noticed any difference between the original screen and your replacement?

It was 4 months ago I got mine from AliExpress, at that time there wasn't any of these cheaper ones for sale. Looking at these cheaper ones they are TFT, though it's not always obvious in the description.
One seller is selling both TFT and OLED and are clearly labelled in the options. So from this assume that all cheaper ones are TFT.
It is a bit of a minefield. I doubt that any of the sellers have the actual original genuine screens. It took me a couple of days to go through all the listings and determine which one would most likely be good quality.
I eventually went for this one, which was slightly more expensive than most. Now though it appears to have gone up about $15 from when I bought it.
https://a.aliexpress.com/_d7OqLlE
At that time it had the best reviews, which appeared genuine. There were others with a higher review count, which appeared to be just as well reviewed, but reading the reviews you realise they are fake. Many reviews, supposedly from the USA, written in very poor pigeon English.
Also saw some stores with high review count, but then realised that most reviews are for completely different products (a common trick by some Ali sellers, completely change an existing listing so a new product looks like it's got high reviews)
The screen is good quality. It took about 3 weeks to arrive, but it was about 2 weeks after I damaged it before I ordered. So it was around 5 weeks after I last used the phone before installing it. After that time it's hard to judge if it is as good as the original. To look at and use the phone you wouldn't think it was a non original replacement, to me it seems to be as good as the original, without doing a side by side comparison. As far as an oleophobic coating, I couldn't say, it's had a screen protector since installing.

Umm. What? Even with IP rated phones you don't wash it with water. IP rating generally means that its good for accidental drops into water or for use in light rain. Why on earth would you wash it? Yes, I know jerryrig says there's some water ingress protection but it doesn't mean you should wash it with water. It just means you're good for use in light rain at best.

Well, I guess that even if it's a bit worse, replacing the screen is better (in my case) than dealing with an older/cheaper phone or throwing a nice sum of money on a phone in similar price range. I will report my experience after replacing the screen, maybe it will help someone. I'm definitely not going to find another guy with 9T (Pro) because of the coronavirus, but comparison with another high-quality AMOLED phone is another way to check the quality.
So... I wanted to order the screen, but when I checked whether the phone still works... it appeared dead. It charges, is visible in USB devices (but no fastboot etc.), the notification LED blinks, but that's all. It worked perfectly some time after the water damage occured, so I guess that the damage progressed. Yes, I didn't clean the phone thoroughly after disassembling it - I thought that the water probably evaporated anyway after using a heat gun, so, as I mentioned earlier, I cleaned only (easily accessible) connectors. Maybe it is something stupid (power button?), but it seems too good to be true. If I don't post another update, just assume that my phone died.

My k20 pro Disable screen problem
Hi xda developers
After wetting the phone with a hand sanitizer and using the same wetness of the screen, I played the online game and put it in automatic game mode and rested for a while...
After waking up, I noticed that the phone was turned off, which was turned on by holding down the power button, but the screen is off...
Currently, only vibrators and notification lights work for the phone, and the phone is organized by a computer.
Also, the phone is charged and its sound can be heard while connecting it to the charger, and its sound can be heard in the same way to lock the screen.
Does anyone have an idea?
my phone just take s swim in the river yesterday, now its has no display but still on and even the touchscreen is working (i know is working cuz its register sound when i try to touch it everywhere). it have been dead first but then turn back on with everything work normal. but after about half hour, the screen suddnly dead.
after tear it my self i found where the water coming in, its from the 3.5mm jack. other holes have rubber protection but the jack has nothing. they even put water dammage indicator below the 3.5mm module....
i have try few method like clean the board with isoprofil alcohol but no avail. now im waiting my screeen replacement and will try to fixit my self.

Hello! Had exactly the same issue. Did it work to replace the screen?
My phone got into the sea (well the sea went into it), nothing happened for a while, and then it suddenly went black. Is working (like i can still use it as alarm lol) but the screen is not. Same as BlueOner, i'm afraid is not the screen itself but something in the mother board, so I would love to know if any of you were able to use it after replacing the screen or i will end up with the same issue.
Thanks!

It's toast. Don't even bother. The sea salt is hygroscopic, conductive (with moisture), corrosive and -everywhere- now.
It not a question of if it will fail only when.
Tap water is similar but not near as aggressive. The smallest amount of salt (sweat) can change that if it gets inside too. Even so if the device >didn't have it's battery pulled immediately<, then completely turn apart and cleaned with anhydrous isopropyl alcohol it won't fare much better in the long term most likely.
Any water internally can cause massive damage quickly. Or the signs of damage can take months to fully manifest themselves especially if the battery wasn't quickly pulled.
Salt water is fatal because it's residue doesn't easily rinse off as well as what was stated above.
This is why manufacturer warranties refuse to deal with water damage.
It's the gift that keeps giving...
Occasionally you can get lucky if you act fast
My Buds case fell into my coffee cup and immediately crash dived to the bottom like the sub in Das Boot. Cream and sugar too.
I pulled it apart and rinsed it will RO water then with anhydrous isopropyl alcohol in less then 3 minutes. Got as much as the isopropyl out as possible without compressed air and allowed it to dry in a warm sunny spot. Couldn't disconnect the Li battery as it was soldered or spot welded in. After about 2 days of drying it worked and other a year and a half later still is working.
I am still surprised...
Hi. I got water damage. The screen can be turn on but its not responding at all. I can press the power button, the screen lights up, as normal. I just couldn't unlocked it. It wont accept any touch. Also i tried calling from another phone, sound okay, also led notification working.
I havent try the charging port yet.
Anybody have similar experience? Can someone explain my problem? Should i order new screen replacement? Im just afraid its not screen problem.
