This is my first windows phone (with an exception of an hd2), I've owned over 50 android phones, needless to say that I am extra lost switching to windows 7.5. I was wondering if it's just me or if theres something up with WiFi, my signal seems to be very weak if I get one at all and it wont connect. Also I'm a swype user, is there something similar I can download? And if I download from my computer, can I download .apk's?
Also is there a way in the notification area, to tell if I'm constantly connected to wifi so I'm not using mobile data?

In the marketplace there's an app called Slydr, that is based on the same principals as swype. I don't use it so I couldn't tell you if it's nearly as accurate as swype.
As far as WiFi, mine has excellent strength, it will pick up WiFi networks from quite some distances. Far superior to my TP2 and my wife's android device... I'm writing this now sitting in my driveway connected to my WiFi network. Your signal reduction could be due to the OS and radio version that your device is running. To change your radio though you would have to unlock your device or root it as know in android and then you can flash a custom rom and radio.
The other thing with wp7 is that when your device is in sleep mode or once you lock the screen it disconnect from the WiFi network and once the device is awakened it will instantly reconnect to the WiFi network. There is an app in the marketplace called Keep Alive that keeps you connected even when it's in sleep mode.
In the notification bar there is a WiFi symbol that kind of looks like a tornado and when it's lit bright indicates that it's connected. These are some XAP's you can install for WiFi status - DS Super Tool, Quick Launch and Folders Creator and then pin them to the start screen.
There are no APK's for wp7, if you unlock your device you can then install XAP's or homebrew apps through the devices IE. XAP's can be found in the the Windows Phone 7 Development and Hacking section under wp7 Development and Hacking and wp7 Software Development. There are also homebrew marketplaces, Devstore 8 and WP Bazaar. Both can be installed to the device as an XAP.
If you go to - Settings - About - more, this will give you the devices information, OS, Firware, Bootloader, Radio and so on.
If your interested in unlocking your device and flashing a custom rom and or radio take a look at Shadows tutorial on downgrading SPL, Flashing XSPL and installing roms.

That was a ton of great info!! I appreciate it big time. Any recommendations on radios and roms? Just want to stay somewhat stock, even if it's a new WP version.
I also noticed I can't update or download half the apps without wifi. That really stinks.

There's alot of great custom roms available. My personal favorite is Deepshining. The current version is running on OS WP 7.8 which isn't even released yet. It has some nice features and a new start screen where you can customize the tile sizes. If your looking to stay more towards stock I would look through the HD7 Development and Hacking section and look at some of the roms and see which one would suit you the best. The cool thing is if you unlock your device and install HSPL its super easy to flash another rom... Download and extract the rom, put the device in bootloader mode connect to your PC and flash away. I would look at Deepshining, Nextgen +, Intrinsic, Dynamics 7, and Ansar's 8835 roms. Some roms have a suggested Radio to go with it. I use Radio 565.09.25a_22.45.50.21u
If you go into Settings - About - More and post back the info from that screen we can get an idea of where your device is at on the OS and if it needs to be updated.
Yeah there is definitely a limitation on downloading larger files and it requiring WiFi. If you end up unlocking your device there is an XAP called Marketplace Configuration and one of the features allows you to set and increase the download size without WiFi.
OS version 7.10.8107.79
Firmware rev 2250.21.51202.531
hardware rev 0002
radio software 5.71.09.02a_22.51.50.21U
radio hardware A.12.0.D4
Bootloader version 5.12.2250.0(135916)
Chip SOC version 2.2.5.0
I've been seeing a lot of the deepshining name, If it's stable I'd probably like to go with that route. If I flash that, is a newer/better radio included?
Am I suppose to downgrade my bootloader using the y-connector or goldcard trick, since I have 5.12.2250.0 bootloader?
I don't have any of the cables and stuff :\

OK... You have a TMobile HD7 with bootloader 5.xxx.
Yep you have to use the goldcard/ Y cable method to downgrade your SPL to at or below 3.xxx, (which is required to install RSPL/HSPL) then install RSPL/HSPL and then flash a custom rom.
The goldcard/ Ycable method is very easy... You can either make the Y cable or purchase one online at like Amazon for $5. You also need a 1gb or 2gb SD card (larger SD cards work but need to be partitioned) and a card reader.
Download the goldcard tool and goldcard image from here -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597837
Download and extract this rom to a new folder on your desktop -
http://www.filefactory.com/file/cc8...9.25a_22.45.50.21_Signed_SCHUBERT_RELEASE.exe
Extract the RUU_signed.nbh and rename it to SCHUIMG.nbh. Wipe the SD card and format it to FAT32, put the SCHUIMG.nbh on the SD card and run the goldcard tool, select and patch the goldcard image. Make the Y cable connections with the card reader and power plug, enter the device into USB host mode and connect it to the Y cable and the flash process will begin....pretty easy.
I just started trying this link: http://techglimpse.com/index.php/install-custom-rom-htc-hd7-windows-phone.php I assume it's not going to work? I keep getting error 226. I really don't want to go out and buy a cable.
I think I may just wait for the official lol. Can I still upgrade the radio to get a better WiFi signal without going all out?
Also is there a way to always show the status bar or symbols. And how do I get my emails to show the thumbnails? ,it says they don't download for my safety or whatever.

My HD7 can only sustain at most 2 days. One day, I suddenly found that If I turn on the fly mode, my HD7 can sustain 10days!! wow. It's such an amazing long time for me. So I think the SIM card may eat up large of the battery life. Then I change a latest version of SIM card, my HD7 seems to sustain longer...
I hope my experience maybe helpful

I decided to reflash my wizard after it continually getting slower and slower after a year. I haven't done it in awhile. It is already unlocked. I flashed the 1.05 rom and it was working. I was going to go up in steps ending with the touch rom. I flashed the wrong rom evidently and now am downgraded to 1.01 on spl/ipl and os 2.26.10.2. The wizard won't activate Activesync and I can't get any communication. I tried rebooting the pc and the wizard multiple times. Still nothing. Need something quick to fix this. Everytime I tried to launch a rom flash I get an error 206.

If it was already CID unlocked, there was no need to downgrade again 1.05,once CID unlocked will remain unlocked forever, unless you intentionally don't flash back the locking code back on to it.
Now try to get into Bootloaders (multicolor screen) hook up the phone with pc via usb cable and check small usb appear at the bottom of the bootloaders,if it appears then download the official stock rom and flash to recover back to the default status, then download the WST 4.2.2 tool and run the 'CID Action' button to verify the CID lock/unlock status of the phone.if its still CID unlocked then upgrade to any wm6 rom of your choice, otherwise perform the unlocking method again. If the usb doesn't appear, then you have a connectivity problem, check the usb cable or the mini usb port of the phone is faulty.Assuming you are doing on winXP.
"and check small usb appear at the bottom of the bootloaders..."
I don't understand what your talking about when you say bootloader. The bootloader is the ROM installation program is it not. How do you check an icon in that? If you mean system trays on the PC or PDA, no USB icon shows. I got no radio or sync services working. The OS is corrupted and operates extremely slow. I can't get any kind of communication between the PDA and PC. Not even through windows explorer (running XP). It's not the cable, I just used it to downgrade to 1.05 and it was working fine. It wasn't until I tried to upgrade to back up, and selected the wrong ROM off my USB storage, that it flashed the wrong ROM and caused all this. Mostly because I hate trying to remember what the longs string of digits mean on each ROM. Especially after I haven't looked at all the files and haven't done a flash in a year.
So no communication. That's the issue.
So does anyone else have any info? As I stated, I can't get any communication between the MDA and the PC. So I don't know how I can flash a stable ROM.
I repeat again,Get the phone in Bootloaders mode (multicolor screen) by pressing and keep holding down the camera button and at the same time either 'Soft Reset' or 'Power On' the phone, but keep holding down the camera button, till phone boots up in Bootloaders mode(multicolor screen),hook up the phone with pc via usb cable and check if small usb appears "At the bottom of the Bootloaders Screen" and not in the system tray of the pc. If it appears then follow the advise I gave you in my above post, but if doesn't appear then you have a connectivity problem.

The Wiki as all the (basic) info to get you started.
It doesn't work
I can get into Bootloaders mode with usb at the bottom. BUT, I can't get any connection to ActiveSync, any of the ROM update utilities and no radio network connections. That was the specific thing I'm telling you. If the Desktop and the PDA won't talk to each other, what am I gonna do? It's not the cable either. The Wizard Tool will not pick it up either when I used it to try to get device info. If your going suggest any kind of ROM or software off the forum, please specify exact version and title so I don't have to go through 100+ pages doing a search to find a specific piece of software off a vague title such as "stock ROM". You may know what it means because your always on the forum. When someone hasn't been back here in awhile they aren't going to remember some arbitrary string of numbers and letters indicating a certain ROM that they haven't used for a year. Too many of you "regulars" get all pissy about things when someone asks a question. If someone keeps asking the same questions, it's because the forum is NOT laid out in an easily searchable fashion unless you have specific search criteria for things such as CUSTOM_RUU_Wizard_1050412_WWE_10111210_WWE instead of "stock ROM".
Have you read the Wiki?
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Wizard Windows Mobile 6 for newbies
Or other posts?
You'd know by now that in bootloader mode ActiveSync or any other tool (that uses ActiveSync) can't communicate with the phone but that it's possible to upgrade a ROM using the official upgrade utilities.
Have you tried making a search and getting hundreds of undesired and repeated posts which makes you lose days searching for a specific thing?
If you'd been here as long as many of us you'd also be tired of people asking same questions. I was once a fresh member and i would always 'waste' my time than others'.
Also the forum search feature has been enhanced by using Google's search engine instead of internal.
There is simply no way I can express my deep and sincere gratitude for the information available in this forum. Let me explain and I think you may understand why.
Several days ago my wife and I received a couple of HTC 8125's from Ebay. Being a tinkerer I wanted to see what I could do so I upgraded mine to Mobile 6 with Touch-Flo.
The wife was skeptical and waited to see how it worked out. Of course she eventually decided to go for the Bling and handed me hers to upgrade as well.
As soon as the upgrade started on hers the pda went bootscreen and locked up. Sooooo I'm sweating bullets and searching the forums as fast as I can go before she finds out. Then I find this thread and the last post... Don't need Activesync to update as long as the device pops up a little usb on the screen when you plug up... I flashed the 8125 upgrade and *Bang*! Back in business. Continued the upgrade and all is well. The wife is now walking around with her "Bling" and happy and I am off the hook!
Thanks for the GREAT FORUM!

We all highly appreciate it,glad you got it working .Thats what this Forum is sooo famous for "Help & Care"
Hey everyone. I have had my Tytn2 for about 6 months now and am generally displeased with the speed of its operation. As it is my first Windows Mobile phone(v6.1) I hoped that it could supersede my older non smartphones but i am now currently doubting my investment. The idea of system optimisation and sub standard/non existant drivers has recentely come to my attention by surfing the internet trying to find the reasoning behind its sluggish operation. As i am not up to date with many technical terms used on this website and the reasonings behind the slowness of it i am making my post fairly general. I have reaslised though that there are things out there that can boost its speed and operation and make it an overall better phone.
If anyone has some favourite, worthwhile or must have tweaks i can do to my phone it would be much appreciated if you could fill me in, send me a link or generally point me in the right direction.
Cheers for your help in advance and thanks to the people out there who are working on these such things
Put a ROM on it that isn't loaded down with ATT bloatware, and HTC's slowness. You'll need to install a HardSPL on your device, SuperCID unlock your device, flash a radio, and choose a ROM to install on your device.

thankyou for your post. Excuse my ignnorance but what does a ROM actually do to the phone? I have no issues with doing so, i just really dont undertand what it does/the reasoning behind it. And also a radio? i have searched threads but there is so much about installing them etc but not many explinations on their workings. cheers k-semler
ok.. i have been looking around some more and found some more answers to my questions...so it basically boosts the performance? so once this is done what can i load onto my phone to make this all worthwhile? And also once this is done does is load as per normal, just faster? Or does the phone have a whole new layout etc. that the creator made?
cheers

The ROM is equivilant to the OS on a desktop computer, the radio allows communication via cellular, wi-fi, and GPS communications. The HardSPL is equivilant to the MBR on a desktop computer, and the Super CID is equivilant to the BIOS on a computer. (A locked CID will only allow you to install signed ROM's from either your telephone service provider, or HTC, while after a SuperCID unlock, you will be able to flash any ROM you so desire.)

The easiest way to describe it is if you went and bought a name brand computer, when you initially set up the OS, (or use the recovery discs that came with the computer), it will install the OS along with a ton of bloatware, half-functional trial ware, and other unwanted software. However, if you were to boot off of a Windows retail disc, you would have the same operating system, but without all the unnecessary software that the retailer included as an added "bonus". So yes, the computer will operate faster due to not being loaded down by unnessecary software.
Yes, once a new ROM is flashed to your phone, and it was a successful flash, it will boot up as normal, and go through the customization process. After the customization process, it will soft-reset the device, and your phone will boot as normal. It will be as fresh as it would be had it come out of the box that way. Yes, this means that you will lose your contacts list, emails, and everything else you have stored on the phone's main memory. (just like you would lose everything on your HDD if you wiped out your OS and installed it again).
To back up your contacts, simply copy the file PIM.VOL from the root of your device to a microSD card, or your desktop. After you have flashed the phone, rename the new PIM.VOL on the root of the device to PIM.OLD, and copy over your archived PIM.VOL to your phone. Soft reset your device, and boot it up like normal. After the phone restarts, verify you have your contacts list restored, and then delete the file PIM.OLD from your device. The same goes for any other data you may wish to preserve. Copy it off to an SD card, or your desktop computer. After you have flashed your phone, simply copy back all data you have archived. You will obviously need to re-install any applications you wish to have on your phone.
With a customized ROM, you can get anything from a bare-minimum install, (just the OS and nothing more), to a completely new layout with TouchFlo3D, Manala 2D, HTC Home, etc. Look at the ROM development forum, decide what you want your phone to do, and go with it. There are also betas for Windows Mobile 6.5 if you wish to try it, as well as ROM's with PIE 8.5, Opera, and virtually any combination you could possibly want to customize the layout of your phone. The phone will be as a completely different device if that is what you so desire. As far as customisation programs, look into Advanced Configurator 3.3 or Kaiser Tweak. You can also install a registry editor and do the edits manually if you so desire.
thanks for that, that simplifies it somewhat. Should i be attempting to do this to my phone in fear of a major screwup if i lack in depth undertanding of what i am actually doing? i can download the files and follow steps and probably get it right but if something goes wrong i will have not a clue of how to fix it or what i did wrong. Thats my only fear.... what your thoughts?
also can you recommend any decent ROMs for a first timer/do you know anyone i can ask?
RE: Fears
Yeah, first time flashing is pretty scary. Believe me, I know all too well how nerve wracking flashing ROMs can be the first couple of times. Just make sure you follow the directions to a "T" and you should be fine. =]
But, if by some freak accident or some screw-up on your part...there ARE a few fixes depending on what broke. There are various threads in the ROM area on this particular thing.
With that being said, just follow the flashing instructions, make sure you backup your PIM, and then pick yourself a good ROM! =]
For first-timers I'd go with either a standard 6.0-6.1 ROM or something by Dutty or L26. It's been so long and so many flashes since my first that I've honestly forgotten which one I started w/ but Dutty & L26 both make wonderful ROMs and I've had various builds by both.
Best of luck!
i am with 3 mobile: does this influence which ROM i chose. Or is this dealt with during the unlocking phase?
That is dealt with during the unlocking step. After you unlock your device, it will not matter who your carrier is. You could insert a SIM from Hong Kong if you wanted to.
i just received my G1, well 1.6 was installed, but: No WLAN, No SD, No Bluetooth and no File-Transfer with Win7 x64. So i'm thinking of a flash, but how?
I wanted to get diagnostics mode, but what is the capture-key?
any other possibilities to rescue this device? (I think, the SD-Card driver was somehow deleted. Tried a software-Wipe, but it didn't help.
I hope someone can help me.
Thx in advance.
Well thats sorta like asking to get into a box sealed off with ducktape using the mailbox=p. You are going to need an sdcard so you can root it. Find any microsdcard and load up rc29, root it, then flash some custom firmware on top. If you don't have an sdcard, then you can't set up root therefore no new roms. The only thing that would work without an sdcard is ADB, but you need root to do something meaningful like pushing an app, etc..
I got similar problem.. My SD card slot seems to be dead. Android and recovery as well, doesn't see any SD card slot so the SD card can't be mounted. And yes, I've already tried with another card. No luck.
So there's my question that OP already asked: Is there any way to flash update.zip without sdcard?
Short answer: No
Long answer: you can change specific parts of a rom without an sdcard (kernel, apps), but not an entire rom or update.zip.
That's what I thought... Unfortunately. So I guess it's time to buy a Sapphire.
i have a program for windows called android commander. it has the option to flash an update. i dont know if this will help but it might. i found it on XDA somewhere. i just dont remember where.
edit: it also has some other really cool features, like push and pull and copy. great if you want to push an apk to the system/app folder
edit here is the link for download of the of the version that works for me http://androidcommander.cyf.pl/?file_id=1
ok, gonna try that android-commander.
If even a hard-reset doesn't bring up the 3 issues, i think, these are Hardware-Errors. (it COULD also be, that the "drivers" from these parts have been removed/deleted from the rom by the previous owner, but a hard-reset WOULD restore the missing "drivers" or am i wrong? (i have not much knowledge about Linux, i'm more a Windows-Freak.)
I mean is it possible to "remove" parts of the "drivers" from the ROM and the Flash/EEPROM that even after restore the part would still be missing?
Until it's rooted you can't make major firmware/bootloader modifications just by sticking a usb cable into it.

Turn the phone off, hold down the CAMERA button read off the top four lines.
That will tell you if it is using a custom spl.
Alternatively you could go in the rom and type su in the terminal, that would also show if it's rooted.
the booloader info sais:

i tried around with the Android-Commander as said before, i also connected the phone but I was not able to copy ANY data to the phone or create any folder anywhere (so not even a custom ringtone or wallpaper), for rooting is a SD-card required, which is not useable due to (maybe) hardware defect, so i ended up the following:
I agreed with the seller to reship the G1 and he refunds my money.
From that short time playing with G1 and Android, i say as conclusion:
Well, the touchscreen works far better than any Windows-Phone, but the Compatibility with Windows is nearly completely missing - and so some for me required aspects of that phone. So i'll just buy another Windows-Device. (i's easier to flash, spl or unlock and you have better and easier possibilites or modifying/customizing your phone.

that might be true, but pay more than 150 for a phone, I only use as secondary phone for a few internet/data-activities is, considered the fact, that in 6 weeks, I'm unemployed again, a bit much to ask for, either a complete new phone or a cheap (ie less than 150 bucks) phone, that has wlan, 3g and a hardware-keyboard - rest is irrelevant - that is being used as secondary phone.
Sure, if the G1 would have been fully working, it would have been a nice device (not a replacement to my Xperia, of course, as the G1 has a minus in resolution compared to WVGA), but so is only to note: if you want a cheap Android-Phone, wait another 3-6 months, there are a lot of them coming out and so the elder ones (magic and g1) should go down in price a bit.
Sometimes, prices on ebay drop around 50 bucks within 3 months - checked on that.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'install drop files on device', I'll assume you meant placing files on the phone (using a USB cable) and then installing them. This is something you can't do right now.
Since we're talking about an HTC 8X, which doesn't have an SD card slot to install packaged apps (XAPs), your current only option to install anything on the phone is the Deployment tool (from the WP8 SDK), which is limited to unencrypted apps (so apps from the store wont work), and you can't have more than 3 of them installed at a time.

Wow, you ate a lot of words from there, I'll assume you meant "I'd like those people, who have an HTC 8X phone to write what they think about the device."
I own one. I was pretty happy with it, however I upgraded to another phone since. It's a really good phone, slim, light, has a ton of nice features, easy to use, etc. If you're coming from another platform be prepared to let go of some stuff you were used to having, as Windows Phone works on some slightly different philosophies. But there are a lot of ways a Windows Phone is simply better than other OS-es, in things like: UI responsiveness and speed, the amount of features packed into a device, and the live tiles are something I simply couldn't live without anymore.
Especially now, since the 8X's price dropped drastically, I still consider it a high-end phone, at least until the next wave of 5 and 6" phones come out.
As this is an HTC 8x related question mostly, It'd have been better placed in this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-8x
Cheers

So I read that the Lumia Black update is out now and other 520/521 based phones have it, at least on ATT. Is there anyway to download the update and manually flash it to the phone? If they are not releasing this update for our phones, I fear they will never release the 8.1 update either when it comes out Also does anyone else have issues transfering files from their pc to their phone? It takes an extremely long time, slow phone write speed I assume, and half the time it times out altogether. I am running Windows 8.1 and have a good computer so I know its not on that end.

If you can't get it OTA, use NCS to check, download and flash new firmware (if it's available). Guide for that is somewhere on this forum, search for it.
I'm assuming you're talking about USB transfer? Try a different cable and port, though any USB 3.0 ports you may have shouldn't make any difference because the phone still uses 2.0.

Thanks for the reply, Ya i checked for updates using the software and it is sadly still not available yet I guess. As for the cable thing, I tried with multiple cables in multiple ports on multiple computers, my 521 just takes forever to transfer via usb, its bad I actually have to take out my sd card and use a card reader if I want to transfer something fast or even at a normal pace. Many times the file copy will get hung up during the transfer and the only way to cancel it is to unplug the phone from the computer mid transfer. Is my 521 defective or do they all have terrible write speeds?

More than likely it's a bad unit...
I've had gdr3 for a while, but no black. By the time black comes out 8.1 will probably be released via developers program. I'm thinking black will be released this month though for 521. Kind of weird the best selling Nokia phones are getting black so late. That's T-Mobile for you.

but then again they are the lowest-end models.
If you stick to the Preview for Developer's program, you should get Update 3 (previously GDR3) and 8.1 in the future.
As for Nokia firmware like Black and Amber, they are mostly independent of MS's updates.
