stay away from it.

Wrong section

Should be in general S5830i section true, but anyway /efs folder is generally empty when the phone is fully booted in my experience. I think this is because /efs is just a mount point for /dev/bml15 which isn't actually mounted when you look in the folder. I wouldn't attempt to mess about with this partition manually in any way, people have corrupted their efs partitions by just trying to copy them.
If you do want to back it up then you can get Galaxy Toolbox on Google Play which will do the job, see
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25949902
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doky.sgtoolbox
Galaxy Toolbox is good because it has a restore option within the app.
Also, if you follow the instructions for "Full (firmware) backup with CWM to ODIN format" on the following thread then one of the files that this will spit out will be bml15_EFS.img, so this is another way to do it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1551156

Dont u read the rules..... What the hell is wrong with people.. Cant u even read and follow simple rules

I will try thank u for your help

Unknown Baseband, Unknown IMEI

Hi!
I downgraded from ICS 4.0.4 IMM76K to 2.3.6 GB.
Everything was smooth, EXCEPT THAT SIM IS NOT DETECTED.
The same sim is detected in all other phones. No other sim is detected in my gt i9000!
Plz hlp me with the easiest way cuz im a noob!! i've tried the "9 steps to recovering IMEI" but i get stuck at the terminal app!! its not working for me! :-((

Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
I made a backup via cwm..im trying to restore "data" and "system" via advanced restore and see wether it works..currently doing that
OK let me know then!
If it not works, try the app nitrality from market, you can try to restore your efs backup with the app
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
didnt work.
So now I am fully restoring it via CWM, before i was rebooting into CWM mode, and then advance restoring.
Ok I'm gonna also try that app and let you know!
Btw thank you so much for your help man!! Im so bloody depressed! :-(
The damage is reversible right? I mean im not a gonner am I? I'll keep you updated!
Since you made an backup of your efs folder its always possible to restore so no reason for getting depressed mate!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
I restored it fully, but after the phone rebooted, it just got stuck at the boot screen..i took out the battery after 5 mins as it was still stuck at the boot screen.
What do you suggest now? I'll try that app you suggested once I get my firmware working!
Retiring for bed, will follow up on your advice when i wake up..
Go into the recovery and make a factory reset, if the Akku trick won't work

Did you make sure you flashed with a .pit file as well,? You must do this down grading as the file partitions are different from ics
Ok I tried to go into recovery mode, but the phone would just boot again, from the very first boot screen (where samsung is displayed at the bottom)..so should i flash again with the .pit thingy?
ok guyz nitrality didnt work..flashed it with gingerbread with .pit again..no imei number

Do you have a back up of your efs folder?
Yes i have the efs backup on my pc and ds car. I tried copying the efs to system root dir, but no luck.
the nv_data.bin file is 2MB in the backup folder on my sd card, but as soon as I copy the whole efs folder to root dir, this nv_data.bin file is 0bytes size..
One question, when u copied your Backup into the root directory
Did you made a reboot then?

[I9000] No Imei, no service on ICS custom roms

Hi there guys, I'm pretty new to all that custom rom stuff etc. so pls don't blame me for being newbish
I've been using a CF rooted I9000 with Android 2.3.3 for quite a while now, so I thought it's time for something new.
So I tried to update my old 2.3.3 firmare (CF rooted) to a new ICS rom.
First I tried it with Slim ICS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488096
Tried it with semaphore kernel first. It actually worked quite fine but I couldn't get any signal and apparently my IMEI is gone and aswell there is no correct modem installed as it says "unknown baseband version".
I also tried to flash CM9 instead with the build in kernel, but still no IMEI and no service.
Also tried to manually install this modem: radio-Cm-7-GalaxyS-JVU-signed.zip , but still no change and still "unknown baseband version".
I'm located in Germany using O2 , any other suggestions for modems?
Any suggestions how I get my service back to work on Slim ICS?
If not, how do I get my old system back? I made a nandroid backup but apparently the new CWM Recovery version is not compatible with my nandroid backup from the old system. I guess I have to flash everything back to stock with Odin and get the old CF root again, then I should probably be able to restore my nandroid backup.
Still it would be awesome if I get Slim ICS to work.
Would appreciate any help
This is such a common problem.
Problem:- lost my IMEI or changed on upgrading
Solution:
1) Download Root Explorer from Play Store and use it to
2) Search you internal SD card for sdcard/backup/efs
3) Copy nv_data.bin, nv_data.bin.md5 and nv.log paste them into /efs in your Phone memory
4) Reboot to get back your original IMEI
or
If you don't have the EFS backup, you can start from the beginning.. ODIN back to a stock samsung rom and root:
JVU
Mirror from Samfirmware: http://hotfile.com/dl/140301534/be88...U_OXA.rar.html
password: samfirmware.com
CF-Root= http://download.chainfire.eu/132/CF-...etrieve_file=1
after rooting, backup your EFS folder to your pc in case you lose your IMEI number again.
Flash your custom rom.
If you lose IMEI number just follow the instructions above to fix it without having to start from the beginning. Hope this helps you.:victory:
thx for the detailed instructions for the common problem^^
Still I wonder why that happens so often and why I haven't read about backing up my EFS in any instructions of Custom Rom (well I haven't seen a lot anyway...)
Shouldn't it be possible to export the EFS folder out of the nandroid backup? Cause I'm pretty sure I didn't back up that folder...
Anyway, if I got my IMEI back, do you think my "no service" problem will automatically be fixed aswell or is that a whole different problem?
I'll try to recover my IMEI when I'm back home but I guess I'll have to recover the stock one.
I still should have the stock rom data files somewhere so I guess it shouldnt be a problem to return to stock.
Sometimes the custom roms can create the EFS backup without you doing so, just check and see.
Anyway, once you get your IMEI back the "no service" problem should be fixed. They normally go together. I didn't know about this problem and had to start over from stock when it happened to me. Now I have an EFS backup folder in my computer in case it ever happens again. :silly:
getting slightly pissed off now...
There actually is a backup folder of EFS, but...
Tried it with ES file Explorer and File Manager, both should be able to gain root access but somehow it doesn't work. Don't wanna buy Root explorer...
Then I switched back to CM9 and noticed that there's no file explorer at all... This is getting annoying.
I'm might just switch back to stock, it's easier than trying to figure out how those custom roms messed up my system
EDIT:
Ok I managed to install Root explorer, the problem is that is says I don't have enough space in my /efs folder to replace it with my backup efs files. There seems to be 12.42Mb used and only 80k free in that folder...

you just overwrite it with root explorer . For other methods http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26827676&postcount=4512" and this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30415128#post30415128

As I told you I couldn't overwrite the files in the efs folder as my backup efs data files wouldn't fit into the new efs folder. Looks like this is a problem that hasn't occured to often when you never heard about it^^
Well anyway thx for the link to your collection of solutions, very helpful, should be sticky.
Had to go back to my stock 2.3.3 anyway, I'll try to flash to 2.6 first now, then CM9, then Slim ICS, maybe that works better
Just flash a 2.3.6 and then ICS.. it doesn't matter if you flash a 2.3.3 before

Finally a good solution, it helped me. thanks
So I just followed this guide now: thehelptimes com how-to-install-android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-on-galaxy-s-i9000
It basically says you have to go from 2.3.6 , same what you guys said
I used the SGSICS Rom now and this is working perfectly.
After that I changed to Slim ICS which is working now also correctly.
So everything is fine now I guess, kind of time consuming though^^

hello Sir ,
Can You give Me Clear Gide . I Am Not Understand It . Please help Me .
It is a bug in the rom and in my opinion with the modem, try upgrading to Jelly Bean
Check your imei number (in settings) if it is beginning with 0, then do the steps below )))
If you want signal, go back to 2.3.6, copy your EFS folder (from system) to your sd (with root explorer), install that rom, which you need, then copy your EFS folder from your SD to system, overwrite every file, that already exists (with root explorer again)(if you can't copy the files to system, press the R/W button) You need root for the whole process!!!
Enjoy,
Jelly Bean

I have the fake imei number. I search in the sdinternal and there's a backup folder with the efs in there, but i don't know when or what did this backup. Is there a way to see the imei number in this folder to see if its the correct one?
regards,
Guys.... da guide easy enough to follow
for those whose dont format internal sd, there will be efs folder in /sdcard/ (internal sd) Juz open da efs folder, copy everything inside it into phone memory in efs folder.
folder will be in here /efs by overwritten everything, there will be 3 (usually file inside backup efs folder or juz copy everything (not da folder named backup, da file inside it)
then reboot
oyea u need to have root permission to alter system

NOPE, never use other ROMs meant for other phones on your phone.
S1 and S3 are not the same
you need to locate the i9300 stock ROM, preferably an early version and flash to get back your IMEI
First identify your model as branded versions, need branded ROMs
Galaxy S III GT-I9300 Galaxy S III International
Galaxy S III SHW-M440S Galaxy S III South Korea
Galaxy S III SGH-T999 Galaxy S III T-Mobile
Galaxy S III SGH-I747 Galaxy S III AT&T
Galaxy S III SC-06D Galaxy S III Japan
Galaxy S III SCH-R530 Galaxy S III U.S. Cellular
Galaxy S III SCH-I535 Galaxy S III Verizon
Galaxy S III SPH-L710 Galaxy S III Sprint
than go here to locate your sub forum and search for the earliest STOCK ROM , that your phone came with and flash that to recover your IMEI and also post there for help as someone there might have another solution

He can do this when you can show and prove that you have and own the original imei number. He can't "invent" one.
So you should check this first.

No, because using hardware equipment is part of the repair process.
Until now I do not know a "software" restore mechanism (if you do not have a working backup of your old efs).
And I read and checked a lot of threads about this because I have a device where the IMEI is written in letters inside the device but not anymore in the efs - I have the so-called developer IMEI.
You should fist explore your note with root explorer. Depending on the rom you're using, you may have a backup of your efs partition (some rom do it automaticaly).
Watch your SD card if ther is a file called "efs.img"
You can also look inside the efs partition if there are files called .nv_data.bak and another one called .nv_data.bak.md5
If yes, you can fix it yourself.

Rename nv_data.bin to nv_data.bak
Rename nv_data.bin.md5 to nv_data.bin.md5.bak
Then:
Rename .nv_data.bak to nv_data.bin (remove the point at the begining)
Rename .nv_data.bak.md5 to nv_data.bin.md5 (remove the point as well)
Restart your phone and let us know.

All can be done with root explorer. Just long press the file to rename and then chose "rename" and edit the name.
Files don't have to be moved, everithing needed is inside the efs folder.
After renaming those files, just reboot the phone.

NO CWM backups?

Pretty sure they're in /data/media/clockworkmod/backup - they can't be seen by a PC so you have to use a file manager on the phone to move them to the PC-readable part of your memory
Thanks for the reply bro but i can find it.Nothing in that folder or anywhere else. Are my backups corrupt or something?

EFS backup

What is the use of EFS backup?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The EFS holds your IMEI and other baseband-related stuff which essentially allows you to conncet to mobile networks. So if you lose your IMEI/your EFS becomes corrupt you'll find that your mobile reception won't work.
So it becomes pretty important to have a backup of it somewhere in case things go wrong (if you don't its not hard to fix, just bothersome)

1. no
2. if the folder is created as image it is easier. Copy and paste often won't work.
Upgrading stepwise is the safest way to keep all fine (GB, ICS, JB/CM10.2, KK). Upgrading to 4.3/CM10.2 will resize the partitions so best way to downgrade again beyond 4.3 is to flash stock GB with PIT file and repartition with Odin.
