I am trying to find the stock 7310 boot animation files: bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop qmg files from the 7310. Please.
Thanks,

Thanks for replying. I knew I should have given more information, darn it! I have a rooted i957 LTE that has a really ugly Telus boot screen, Since I don't plan on using this tab for data with AT&T or Telus, I'd like to just get a Samsung (or a generic android) boot animation. I've found some other boot animations in different forums, but I thought that the 7310 would be my best bet because the resolution should be correct without any tweaking. I've seen people posting links to boot files in the past and was hoping someone could do the same with the 7310. Thanks again for your reply.

but you have to download the rom file, put it in there and then flash the rom with the modified .zip inside it (DON'T EXTRACT THE ROM ZIP FILE)

Here's the situation. I am using the DannoRom_2xx. His Rom has the two qmg files in question located in system>media. I have tried replacing those files with other qmg animation files and they don't seem to want to be replaced. Do I need to replace the files in the ROM and then re-flash the ROM? Actually, I did accomplish part of what I wanted to do (although I'm not sure how I did it.) I did get rid of the Telus screen so now I just have a black screen while my tab is booting. Obviously this is not an urgent problem, I'm just determined to figure out how to do this. It was much easier using zip files on the Nook Color last year. Thanks for trying to help.

How did you try to replace them?
The /system file-system is mounted read-only. It needs to be re-mounted read-write before you can modify it. And then re-mounted read-only in the interest of safety.

Even after setting system permissions to R/W, this is the message I get when I try to move or replace those QMG files that are located in system.
Thanks,

Hmmm. There is another explanation (other than not being rooted, which you already seem to be).
Is the /system/media a distinct file-system? Or a symlink?
(I don't believe the i957 is that different, though)
What does the mount or df command say?
And 'ls -ld /system/media' ?
Also, have you tried doing the mv/cp using adb?

Okay, I surrender! I am not afraid to admit that I am apparently in over my head. I just wanted to replace the current QMG files with some others, and it looks like I have ventured into, what is for me, unchartered territory. I have used ADB in the past, but I don't think I know enough to be really comfortable with it. Samsung's proprietary animation files are way beyond my ability to deal with. I'll be following this thread to see if someone out there who is much more knowledgeable than I, comes up with a procedure that I can understand and actually implement.
Thanks to any and all who have tried to help me solve this problem.

I will note that this is your thread and this is xda-developers, not Samsung user support.
Sitting back and waiting to have the solution spoon-fed to you while someone is trying to help you is not exactly the way to endear yourself to the community.

Easy for you to say. Sorry if this offends. Please tell me what I should do in this circumstance. Your most recent response is way over my head. I gave as much information that I could come up with. Other than that, what would you have me do. Should I pretend that I know what you are talking about, or should I acknowledge that this thread has moved beyond my ability to understand. I was hoping to find someone with some recognition of the problems I was dealing with. Obviously not something you have experienced for yourself. I tried everything that was suggested until I got to this last post which made absolutely no sense to me. Of course I can google until the cows come home, and I probably will, trying to figure out what all of the references you made actually mean. I really am sorry if I led anyone to believe that I knew and understood more than I do. I come from the earlier XDA threads for the Nook Color which was a very special place for all of us newcomers who were so excited about learning what we could do. It has been all too obvious that those Nook Color forums were the not the norm. I have managed to work my through a few other android products: the touchpad, the nexus s, and the galaxy 7.7. All rooted with help fro XDA. The 8.9 doesn't seem to have the same interest and dedication that some of the other forums have. Sorry to have been a distraction.

Hello there!
It seems that you can get new QMG files by following this tutorial:

Could somebody please give me some pointers on how to start and compile your own version of the recovery and adbd executables inside the recovery image?

After spending like 2 hours searching for the answer to this, im pretty sure this havent been replied so *BUMP*
Is there anyone out there that could point me in the right direction to opening, modifying and repacking the recovery.img?, Id like to add a password protection to the CM 1.4 Recovery image. I was browsing its contents on github and seems not a hard task to add this, but i dont know how to add the files that I modify inside the recovery.img pack

I dont get why this was moved to question an answeres, this regards more likely development.

Ok so I have been tinkering around for the past few trying to get the Fender Music app on my dream. Well I did it but the app sucks cause it's not FOR my device. And being that I don't know how to make it work right, I decided to go back with the stock app.
Enough rambling, you want the goods...
Backup before doing this cause I take no responsibility.
remove the .zip from the name.
Wouldn't hurt to resign it either...
Put the file in your theme's .zip. In the app folder within the .zip of course.
I don't know how to take screen shots but I will tell you to try it and you will like it. This works on my dream flawlessly. I hope the same for you...
This wasn't really that hard to do. Mostly because I don't know how to modify/make .9's nor these .xml's for that matter. But most of the visuals are what I have modified anyway so I don't see the need...
The one thing I have a problem with is the lack of album art. As soon as I figure that out, things will be nice!
This will be on my theme as soon as I get it out. I have grown to understand how long this takes for you themeer's out there. I thank you all for everything you do. But I would like to thank Binary for helping me understand the basics of things around here!!!
Which brings to my attention, this is based on CM 4.2.13......
screenshot.apk from market...
Thanks much. I was waiting for that actually though.
But that's what I will use when I have everything finished.
Knowing this environment though, I'll never finish...

You can take screenshots even easier with ddms.bat
In revision 4 just go to Device and Screen Capture (or whatever).
Simple.
Ok. Thank you. But I'm still going to wait until I finish my theme before I take screen shots. Until then, you'll just have to dl it to find out what it looks like...
Nice to see you getting so into this. If you want help with .9.pngs, Jairomeo taught me a nice trick that makes it very easy (assuming eclipse is set up).
Eclipse is set up I just don't know how to use it other than to start up a virtual android...
Gonna try it out now. I want to know what it looks like
/edit: here is the signed .apk (Or was it already signed?)
(push to system/app)
ok noob question lol... i downloaded the file but when i try to copy it to system/app folder it says file is read only.. something i missed?

This is outdated. I haven't had the time to work on it lately and I apologize for that. My theme hasn't seen any love for a few days either.
But it works and looks better than stock.
Here's how I install it.
Put music.apk in root sdcard folder. Use a file manager like Astro or And Explorer to navigate to it. Click it and install with package installer.
Enjoy!

I think what they are looking for is where to put the files that they download. I know in the rooting tread, it was missing. I also think some people do it differently, so it may help just to let them know how you find it easiest to navigate to them, etc.
Personally, I take the files that were downloaded and extract them all. Then make sure you have downloaded the android SDK program and put it on the root of your computers hard drive such as drive C:. Then add those files you downloaded to the "Tools" file within sdk.
To navigate to them with command prompt, it would look like: cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools
Then run the commands as listed in the tread.
Hope this helps.
Perhaps this is not the answer you are looking for, but if you are comfortable flashing roms, flash Cognition 2.2 (its already rooted).
Good luck

I'm running W7 and am having issues with adb. I'm a noob to android but I'm learning. Anyway, I tried your suggestion of adding the files to the tools directory but when I enter "su" the system returns "su: not found". Any help?
Moved to Q&A.
Hi guys.
I know that the z4mod can successfully patch a Tab kernel, without any problems (I did it myself, flashed it, and ran it just fine for a few days).
But when I tried to run one of the zip files to switch the file system, everything went nuts and I had to reflash my Tab from scratch.
So I did a little investigating, and as far as I can tell, all that needs to be done to make the whole thing successful is to modify the script in the zip file to correct the mount point names (as they are different from the SGS).
So if anyone around here knows anything about this sort of business, please take a look at it and let me/us all know, cuz it would be GREAT to get z4mod working on the Tab.
Here's the web site if anyone's interested;

Hi, did you tell ryanZA what results you got? I'm sure he'll be interested to help.

Noob question. What's the benefit of running ext2/3 for the internal partitions versus rfs?

RFS is Samsung's partition format (FAT + journal) that is supposed to be better for flash devices. Apparently it is not so good, and very laggy. Therefore people are switching partitions to ext2/3 or moving and linking stuff to SD card with ext2/3 or jffs2 partition.

I was not able to locate my mount points to compare with what you did observe, but i guess we should start with that, then ask ryanZA his thought about what you've found.

I'm really newb on linux, but i've read a little since last post.
What if we:
1 - dump mount list from a working SGT (terminal or adb shell -> mount ?)
2 - apply Z4mod then SGT won't boot (i assume it creates /etc/.fstab)
3 - edit /etc/fstab to match the dump in step 1
But, how do we read/write /etc/fstab once the sgt is locked ? using some kind of update.zip, or is there some shell service we could connect to, even if some mounts aren't in the right place ?
Unfortunately, everything I could contribute to this idea was in my first post. I know absolutely nothing about Android development, sadly...
But after reading what Deodexed said about volumes not mounting properly during recovery (he's the guy trying to get CWM to work for our Tabs) it seems that maybe that's the reason that z4mod may not work... If the volumes aren't mounted correctly, it can't convert the filesystems.
Maybe what doloop said might work? I hope so. An SGT running on ext2 would rock the socks off anything else out there. God I want it
Hey XDA, been away for a while and just finished my first semester of college. Checked up on my old thread to find alot of positive things. A while back I wanted to do more with this and never got around to it, but figured it was about time I did...
The new animation starts somewhat similarly to the old one with added transition between the HTC logo and the vortex. Also after the vortex, instead of a static image at the end I've thrown together a completely new piece that will loop until the phone finally decides to start.
This version also uses JPGs rather than PNGs. I just found out JPGs could be used the other day... After optimizing the PNGs, (something that wasn't considered for the old one) this new one comes out to a total of 234MB... (one of those things that happen when you only use AfterFX for the project...) If anyone would like this anyway... Let me know and I'll put it up somewhere.
I also made a basic splash screen, something that was misadvertised with the old version. It is the first image in the attachments and can be installed thru bootloader. (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?37e8as4f4m68cwu)
Download: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?w1ci9p2ugk7271d
If you would like the stock sound to use with this download it from the attachments below, extract the mp3 and add it to /system/media.
GIFs were 4-5MB each so heres a video instead...
Old version has been moved to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20568970 if anyone wants to check it out.
Thanks for the link, and if you get a chance to try it out let me know how you like it
This is [email protected]$$! Way better then the stock bootanimation
Great work!

I personally used clockwork recovery and did install sdcard/update.zip
Place the update.zip from the download onto the root of the sd card, then in ROM manager, reboot into recovery and install the update.
There are alternatives to this such as just putting the bootanimation.zip into the right folder using root explorer, but I ran into permission problems so I did it this way.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Is this new boot animation really 24MB? Like, I yanked it out of the update .zip because I normally move them with Root Explorer. I find easier, and I have a system to doing this where I save the old ones in the folder and just rename them. Allowing me to swap them out at will by simply altering the name of the bootanimation . zip back to that.
-Edit- NVM. I see why it's 24MB now.
Holy effing sh!t cakes! That's a lot of graphical content to run through there in the beginning. Looks awesome though!
Again, just to anyone reading this that hasn't tried this boot animation yet.

Glad you like it. I would have done the same using root explorer, but I ran into read only and permission problems for anything i tried to use it with. And I really tryed to lower the size the best I could... It was originally 165mb, then found out it was rendering w/o compression (lossless), changed render settings managed to get to 95mb... to get it to 24mb I lowered the quality a little more and it skips every other frame. After uploading it I attempted to make it smaller but all i can do is lower the quality even more, and at 17mb it looked pretty bad.
PS- could someone link me to the stock FinalThunder.mp3 I haven't had it since I flashed my ROM

No I wasn't *****ing about the size. I was checking to make sure I didn't bork something up extracting it. I was just verifying as most of them are 2-6MB.
Here's the Final Thunder .mp3
I ripped it right from the system folder with RE so it should be good. Make sure you check the permissions though. As they may need to be altered to get it to jive with the way it gets read. It should be;
X-X-[0]
X-[0]-[0]
X-[0]-[0]
I think.
X meaning checked.
I had to rar it to post it.
Edit: Yes, that's the way the permissions need to be above, but when it gets extracted it changes them to;
[0]-[0]-[0]
X-X-X
X-[0]-X
So if you just drop it in there it probably WON'T WORK. Make sure you change the permissions!
Again, thanks for the awesome boot animation!
Thanks, I just now noticed the mount r/w button at the top of root explorer >.>
I also did all of this before I saw the post edit, so I did just throw it in there, but it still worked =o
Now I can see the bootscreen everyones been thanking me for lol... Thanks again for the sound clip =)

Hardly a fair trade for the kick ass boot animation. But no problem.
Yeah, many moons ago RE owned me until I found that little mount r/w button. After finding it however it's been an extremely useful tool.
I'm surprised the MP3 worked for you actually w/o changing permissions. :shrugs: I'm leaving the warning there in case someone else downloads it for the same purpose and it doesn't.
Which file or folder do i drop this into to make sound work. I am on gingeritis and had to delete the VZW_bootanimation and there is no sound once i swapped that boot animation out with this one?

It's either system/media
or
system/customize/resource
But I think it's system/media
Find the bootanimation .zip and that's where the sound file should go.
I tried putting it system/customize/resource and that didnt do anything so i will try system media I guess just put in the main file or any one of the sbu files I have
audio
GPU
weather
folders in there will try a few i guess?

If anyone wants to try this, it is a zip of the vortex boot animation hopefully with the sound. It is for anyone running a rom that has a boot animation in the system/customize/resource folder and the boot animation is labeled VZW_bootanimation.
Let me know how it goes please
My apologies if the OP does not want this and will take down if asked

I got the animation to work, but no thunder. Tried everything! I think it may be my current set up (gingeritits and imosyons 2.5.4.test.4 kernel) since day one, there's been no sound. It came with the old school PC looking bootanimation and I read somewhere that, that boot ani is supposed to sound like a disc drive spooling up with clicks n what not, but it never did. I remember on the virus Rom I had, it DID have sound and the .mp3 was called VRsound.mp3. I made my own, fixed permissions, renamed it to VRsound.mp3 and replaced it. That worked. I could be wrong, but because this ROM didn't come with sound in the first place, I just can't get it.... Oh well. Still a tight boot! sound or not!
