This is really bugging me but on occasion, when I slam the keyboard shut, the phone turns off. It also has happened when I opened the keyboard but only a few times.
I actually dissassembled the phone to see if maybe it was a loose connection somewhere. I did find that the keyboard ribbon cable was loosely connected so I reseated it firmly...but the problem didn't go away.
I also thought it may be either the SIMM card or the memory card contacts but after removing them, again, I still can reproduce the problem.
Understand that this is an intermittent problem and a little unpredictable but I can make it happen within a few tries. If I cautiously open and close the keyboard (without slamming it shut), I have no problems.
I don't believe it's software related because I can force it to happen when the device is booting up (with the Ericsson logo on the screen) before the OS loads.
Anyone else experiencing this?????
11/17/08 UPDATE: PROBLEM RESOLVED!
After further review and testing, it appears that the battery was losing connection to the battery contacts. I shoved a small crumb of paper folded up (about 1mm thick) at the back of the batt and the problem has gone away. Of course, I'm still holding my breath every time I open and close the keyboard but it looks like that may have been the problem. That's strange because I'm using the original battery. Thought this may help in case anyone else ever runs into this.
That sounds like a problem with the internals, maybe a you should get it replaced/repaired?

Seriously though. It does sound like an internal hardware issue that you should have fixed otherwise it may just get worse and start happening more regularly and at very inconvenient times.

Reminds me of my samsung slider phone the day that it died. I was sliding it back and forth.. sometimes the screen would go completely white and then come back.
By the end of the day, it went white and stayed that way.
Turns out the cable on the inside was slowly being cut from rubbing against the metal hole it was going thru every time the slider moved.
You've checked the cables before... but maybe its not cut yet, but something on the slider mechanism is hitting a wire/pulling on it.
Nobody knows.
But we all do know thats not normal. So yea get it replaced.

Yep...It's going back. Might as well get a fresh one. I know this problem existed for other phones before and the fix was mostly something simple that didn't require a replacement.

yep, my problem seems to have gone now as well by using you're method. i was almost ready to send it back and then i saw you're post and tried your method and it worked !
Thats a pretty stupid mistake by SE...
They should do a quick fix by making new batters a smidge thicker. Of course they probably wouldn't offer free replacements, but they should fix it anyway.

Where did you place the paper exactly ? On the back of the battery where all the info text is or on the bottom ?
When my device is cold, eg in the morning for first use, this sometimes doesnt happen for >20x tries...but when i used it for a longer time and it almost always shuts down when slammed shut..but i already thought it might be something with the battery, but sometimes while slamming it shut for numerous times even the battery cover would come up and it didnt shut down...then in another situation it shuts down immediatly

Yea...what I found with the design is that the ribbon cable connecting the keyboard sits right under the battery. In fact you can see the protrusion when you remove the battery under the white label. It moves when the keyboard is opened and closed. Slightly...but it does move.
...anyway...I folded a small piece of paper to wrap around the back edge of the battery.
Try this:
1. Make a small rectangular strip of paper about 10mm x 20mm and fold it the long way so you end up with a 5mm x 20mm piece.
2. Wrap it around the back/bottom edge of the battery as you reinsert it.
(If the battery fits more snug in its compartment, you got it right!)
3. Put the back cover back on--which should also be more snug.
4. Turn on the device and try it out (slam the keyboard).
(You don't have to wait for it to completely boot up...you can test it when the SE logo appears).
Be careful to use regular copy paper and not paper that's too thick as it may cause some other damage/problems with the device.

Actually i will recieve a new device tomorrow, but i still have the feeling that this problem might reoccur as it seems to be a design flaw

I'm currently playing around with an old XV6800 I got off ebay, and this seems to have fixed the problem, so thanks
I had the same problem too.. but it was linked with the flex cable. Now i just don't use my keyboard even after fixing it.
Hi All,
Unfortunately my other half has managed to, quite accidentally, spill orange squash onto my X1.
The phone still works except for the buttons on the front of the device, ie the panel button, and the directional button.
They respond but do not do what they are supposed too. For example, pressing right on the directional pad seems to bring up the phone app, left doesn't appear to do anything.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I have left the device to dry out in the airing cupboard over night and I am hoping that when I get back in from work it will (magically) be working again.
You shouldn't have used it after the spillage.
The right steps are too turn it off, remove the battery, let it dry for a couple of days and then turn it on.
I don't know what the effects would be in your case...
P.S. It wasn't accidental. Trust me.
well orange juice is sticky, but i once "stepped" into a small pond and everything from my belly downwards stood underwater for about 3-4 sec. including my X1 in my pocket.
i exitedly turned it on, though i knew i shouldn't do that and I saw a load of colours and it tried to boot but got stuck.
well i thought it was ****ed up and already searched for a new mobile. but then after 2-3 days it recovered. first it booted, but the touchscreen was still broken. then everything recovered, even my battery still works perfectly.
my 2 "water indicators" inside my phone and battery are red now

Sorry for the OT, but where exactly are the water indicators? Have only been able to find the battery one.
Ah bugger, I have taken it back to O2 today and they have sent it off for repair.
I claimed I knew nothing about why it failed.
Oh well, it should be covered under my insurance if need be. (Well it better bloody be, I have had it long enough with nary a claim to my name)

Hello all (first post here) I had a water spillage on my x1 and after looking for advice i came across something that worked. half Fill a bowl with uncooked rice and put the x1 in to the rice( take out the battery first). then poor more rice on the top of the phone. the rice will absorbe the moisture from the phone and this should help the phone to dry out. tried it with mine and it worked. everything was working fine but the m button on the keyboard. since then i took the phone apart and cleaned the keyboard and its back working fine. hope this helps or if not has made people laugh as it sounds so stupid it may just work as i did for me!

Actually, using rice is not a stupid idea - at all!
It is known to absorb moisture, go ahead and ask your grandmother (if you still have one), in the old days, when silicagel and the sorts didn't exist yet, a bowl of rice in the basement made sure that it wouldn't become too moist. Still works today, ofcourse.
Another thing you can try if the unit remains defective after cleaning it up a bit - buy some distilled water (at a hardware store or something).
Distilled water consists of H20 (yes, the real deal) for about 99.9% (depending on brand and quality). This means that harmful minerals like Kalium and Natrium will not be in it, meaning it can't cause electrical damage. If you use it carefully, you can rinse your device with it, dissolving any residual stickyness/salt etc inside.
Do take into account that - if not done properly - you might just move the crap from one place in your phone to the other, making things worse.

I have rooted my Captivate with Cognition 2.1 and decided to try a new rom. Cognition 2.2. In the middle of the process the update would not complete and after an hour of waiting I pulled the usb cable. Now it does not power at all or make a connection with the laptop. I have tried all sorts of three button and two button methods along with building the homemade jig but it still does not go.
On the three battery prongs the one on the left is facing up. Would this keep the phone from charging or starting up. There is wear marks on the battery on that spot so I would assume it is making connection. From what I read these phones do come back to life but it is a charging issue then it will not happen. Also was thinking that the captivate will power on without a battery through the USB or power cable.
Have talked to ATT and they will not do a warranty on the phone because of the bent prong (does not matter if it has nothing to do with whats wrong with the phone) it has physical damage.

i know this is probably a pretty obvious question but did you try to bend the prong back so it matches the other ones?
i have tried to bend it back but it just seems to bounce back to where it was. was thinking about pulling the whole back off the phone but I have never taken a captivate apart so not quite sure what it entails.

ive never taken one apart either but i would imagine that you would need a small screw driver and wouldnt have to take more than the back cover off.

Not hard to take apart....just pry up slightly in center of battery lock slide to expose two bottom screws and a fingernail to pry case apart...no scratches that way. The tabs holding it together are breakable but working around the entire device gradually works well.

They might not do a warranty exchange, but you aren't killed. I don't see why you think taking the phone apart is going to make any difference, as the prong is damaged on the outside of the phone.
As for if thats the cause of the brick, I doubt it. Unless you bent the prong AFTER you pulled the USB cable, i don't think it's the problem. It wouldn't work for awhile and then decide not to just because you botched a flash.
When you bend them back into place, does it look normal before it pops back? And I work at AT&T, I deal with that crap every day. Word to the wise; don't mention it, they don't bother looking.
Late Edit: Has your prong been bent before, and is the wear mark on the batteries connector in the same spots as the other ones? With the way yours is positioned, it might not be making a full connection.
I do not think the battery prong is my problem either. The girl at the store mentioned it to the so called Android specialist and she said that was physical damage and because of that ATT would charge me $454 for a new phone even if it had nothing to do with why the phone will not turn on. I would have to assume that I am now black flagged on my account.
I am going to hold off on taking the phone apart and see about trying some other suggestions first. Of course not sure what those suggestions are at this point.

That same thing happened to me, it still worked fine for me, but I ended up bricking it a bit later. I used insurance and got a new phone, bricked it, sent both in to samsung, the fixed the prongs on the broken one, (yeah I didn't send back the phone to AT&T's insurance, **** em) and reflashed both of them to stock firmware, and got them both back, in working condition. But always make sure you have Button combos before flashing. In the Wiki there's a link to DesignGear's fix you can flash with Clockwork.
I think I would just carefully push the bad pin down as you insert the battery. Don't take the battery out unless you have to.

I don't understand the need to pull the phone apart. As a temp fix, u could try soldering a small copper wire piece to the battery terminal, either on the battery or on the phone.
If you don't want to get into the mess of soldering, place the battery and push the single strand wire into it so the contact is made. Or else u could put the wire on the bottom and bend it little so it stands up touching the connector, and place the battery on top of it.
May want to edit those pics and black out the IMEI and other info.
Problem with just doing the temp fix in order to get your phone back into download mode - one of the last steps is jamming the battery back in with the USB cable plugged in while holding down both VOLUME buttons.
But - um you don't even see the grey battery charging icon?
There are other ways to get into download mode. He could apply the temp fix, open odin, hold both volume buttons, then plug the usb cable in. That's what I do.

NOTE: THIS SOLUTION IS POTENTIALLY DAMAGING AND MAY NOT WORK FOR EVERYONE
PROBLEM: touch screen acts erratic, notification bar keeps opening, screen appears to be touched by someone else continuously (Ghost Touch), and parts of the screen DO NOT RESPOND TO TOUCH.
MY OWN SPECIFIC CASE: I had the Ghost Touch issue for 3 days suddenly without intro, which often used to go away after a reboot or two, then phone worked normally after I removed the battery and left it in a dry area (in a closed drawer between books, no air entering, very dry atmosphere), however the RIGHT SIDE of the screen (Search button, rightmost letters [L and Delete and sometimes ENTER] do not work. If the phone is in normal landscape, you cannot open the notification bar by dragging it normally.
DIAGNOSIS: for some people, the problem is more severe. The Digitiser itself could be malfunctioning and has to be fixed, while for others it could be a true problem with the screen itself. However, for MANY OF US, it is a problem of HUMIDITY. The humidity sensors are causing the phone to act like that. Some say part of this problem happens because the way the keypad affects the phone internally as you open and close it a lot.
SOLUTIONS:
1- To be safe: send the phone to the shop. Ask them to open the phone and apply an extra layer of insulation, in case the digitiser and the screen are okay.
2- If something is faulty, replace it at the shop.
3- MY OWN SOLUTION: based on something I read many times, the solution was to apply DRY HEAT for at least 45 mins. What I did, based on averaging out many experiences I read online, was to remove the SD Card and SIM, remove battery, I heated up a toaster oven for 10 minutes, waited until the temperature was at about 60-70 degrees Celsius, SHUT DOWN THE HEAT, put the phone on its screen on a plate, screen facing down and covered by a cloth to protect it from direct contact with metal, then all inside the oven. The oven is a relatively big one, so phone was AWAY FROM A SOURCE OF DIRECT HEAT. I closed the lid, then every while 15 minutes I would heat the oven for 40 seconds to maintain the temp. This is LIKE (ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION) leaving your phone in the glove compartment of your car while its parked in a sunny spot, to find it really hot in the morning and tough to touch for a while. TO CONTINUE, after the phone was out of the oven (I can't believe I am saying this), I left the phone overnight in a dry area for 8 hours (could need less time). Then, I put everything back in, plugged it, and THE PHONE IS WORKING PERFECTLY NOW!
NOTE that solution number 3 could affect your keyboard buttons if heat is too much. It may cause the glue holding the keys to melt a bit. Be delicate with your keyboard after you restore your phone.
Again, I only did this YESTERDAY. With the exception of some keypad stickiness, the phone is working perfectly now.

SECOND EDIT: Phone did it again for 2 days. Applied the same method, and it worked again. I think partially it happened because I was in a very humid location.
That didn't work for me, I had no option but to replace the touchscreen/gorila glass.

I have to admit, I cared litte whether or not this actually worked. I just wanted to toast it But it did work, so
Pretty tempted to try this out, I think I will when I have free time.
My phone had the dead zone problem for 2 months now, but in some very rare cases, like when it's a very hot day, the screen will work normally for a minute or something. Then it goes back to dead part. I assume this would fix it?

If it DOES indeed work on hot days, then it means the phone is not entirely dead. But I would suggest you do something less drastic first, such as the Glove Compartment method. No responsibility though
If you're trying to remove moisture, you could also try putting it in a baggie of crystaline cat litter (NOT the clay kind!) - this stuff is sold at a MUCH higher price as a way to save a phone from water damage, but it's the exact same substance. Does a great job removing moisture. It's the same sort of silica gel that's in those packets in medicine/vitamins that says "Dessicant - do not eat".
Or you could just put it in a sealed bowl with raw rice for a couple of days... this is the best and cheapest way (and then you have the silicon "grains", the ones that you find in shoe boxes or computer parts boxes).

Pretty sure that rice doesn't do anything, I don't know how that started as a suggestion, but its not better than anything else; its not known to be absorbant, but the silicon is.
I've tried the method but the right segment of the digitizer still doesn't work.
My biggest issue with regards to "lack of responsiveness" are the 4 capacitive buttons. Pressing the Home key is always hit and miss. I know I hit it all the time because I can feel the vibration feedback but it only goes to homescreen 50% of the time.
Will also be testing this out as soon as I have the spare time. My screen started acting up after I accidentally put my milestone in a small beer spill at a party Hopefully this will work out for me too!

Luckily for me, I was still under warranty, heh. Cause I had insurance. This is my second Droid this has happened to. Hopefully my replacement won't do the same thing.
How many times did you reheat the oven? I tried just once and it didn't help. My phone has been having this problem since January.

I feel I am on a cooking show
Well, depends on your over. Mainly I was trying to maintain a temp varying between 50-60 c. Mostly 50, but sometimes 60 to up the ante a bit and make sure things stay warm. 30 minutes at least. However, I have to say that I did this twice in 6 weeks, and after that the phone just died again, and I found my warranty card and sent it there to be fixed, and they fixed it, but ruined something else.
If you have the warranty card, take your phone and send it to them Someone told me the method worked and the phone has been good for quite a while, but most of us seem to re-experience the issue after a while.
I've been having these issues for a few days now too, and I think I know why. I've been using this Milestone for 4 months now, and I never had this problem until a few days ago. What I noticed yesterday was that after some acting up, the phone started working properly again. So I ran Touch Test. And I noticed that if I pressed really hard on the top side of the phone(where the logo and the ear piece are located) it started acting up again. My first impression was that the glue holding down the gorilla glass was loose. So I left the phone as usual on my night stand and then I tried the same thing with the pressing on the same area. Guess what? It didn't happen again. Now there seems to be no problem. So I tried to remember what happened yesterday before the screen started acting up, and I remember talking to my wife for a while when I was in my car. Yesterday was a pretty hot day and I was a little sweaty when I talked to her. Now since only that specific part with the earpiece was causing this issue(I tried pressing equally hard on other areas without any problem my guess is that the insulation between the earpiece and the touchscreen has been breached. Maybe because of all the sweat that went in there in time. You know the salt and acids in the swear are known to melt things, and poor quality glue is among them.
How to fix this? I do not know yet, but I do have a good idea that I'd like to share. I want to buy a screen protector foil, and put just a little band around the ear piece. That would probably lower my in-call volume, but since the Milestone is very loud anyway I hope it the quality of the calls won't be too much affected. After that I'll use it in normal conditions again and see if the ghosting happens again.
try completely formatting your SD CARD/PARTITION.
& then reinstalling using (FAT 32/EXT 2, 3, or 4)
sometimes traces from the previous ROM might interfare with touch codecs (maybe)

However, for MANY OF US, it is a problem of HUMIDITY. The humidity sensors are causing the phone to act like that. Some say part of this problem happens because the way the keypad affects the phone internally as you open and close it a lot.
SOLUTIONS:
1- To be safe: send the phone to the shop. Ask them to open the phone and apply an extra layer of insulation, in case the digitiser and the screen are okay.
2- If something is faulty, replace it at the shop.
3- MY OWN SOLUTION: based on something I read many times, the solution was to apply DRY HEAT for at least 45 mins. What I did, based on averaging out many experiences I read online, was to remove the SD Card and SIM, remove battery, I heated up a toaster oven for 10 minutes, waited until the temperature was at about 60-70 degrees Celsius, SHUT DOWN THE HEAT, put the phone on its screen on a plate, screen facing down and covered by a cloth to protect it from direct contact with metal, then all inside the oven. The oven is a relatively big one, so phone was AWAY FROM A SOURCE OF DIRECT HEAT. I closed the lid, then every while 15 minutes I would heat the oven for 40 seconds to maintain the temp. This is LIKE (ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION) leaving your phone in the glove compartment of your car while its parked in a sunny spot, to find it really hot in the morning and tough to touch for a while. TO CONTINUE, after the phone was out of the oven (I can't believe I am saying this), I left the phone overnight in a dry area for 8 hours (could need less time). Then, I put everything back in, plugged it, and THE PHONE IS WORKING PERFECTLY NOW!
NOTE that solution number 3 could affect your keyboard buttons if heat is too much. It may cause the glue holding the keys to melt a bit. Be delicate with your keyboard after you restore your phone.
Again, I only did this YESTERDAY. With the exception of some keypad stickiness, the phone is working perfectly now.

I'll have to try and the oven methode again. My phone has started to really act up again.
I've tried to install new roms, wipe ect. and it doesn't help with the screen.
Have anyone tried to replace the digiziter? They are pretty cheap on ebay
My milestone started freaking out just an hour ago. No more warranty here but I'm not brave enough to do the oven method. Had anybody tried the Rice alternative?
I bought this phone last year to test AT&T's coverage, but am considering promoting it to a more permanent position, so I am finally looking into some of its problems. This phone's camera takes pictures that are clear in the center, but blurry on the left (or top, when shooting in portrait) 20-35%, no matter what. There is a noteworthy dent on the back cover, so the question is if it is more likely that the problem is caused by the bent cover or by damage to the camera module itself. Any ideas?
Either way, you'll have to remove cover, so when you do, take a picture without it. If the problem goes away, it's the back case, replace it.
If not, it might be the camera module, replace it. Either is pretty cheap on Ali, but if you remove the back cover, order a new one. It's almost impossible to remove it without damaging it.

That's pretty much what I was planning after researching things a bit. I'll order just a screen first, then dismantle the device and replace the screen, but hold off on putting the back cover on until test pictures have been taken. I'm excited to get this phone back into working shape!
There's A LOT of stuff you must remove from the screen, speakers, battery etc etc. It can be done, but pay attention.

Also, when you're putting the (new) back case on it, the top of the device goes first, not the bottom. Don't worry with the USB plug, worry with the power button/IR blaster and the top mic.
Not looking forward to it, but it should be an interesting experience

I'll report back with the results either way. I have seen the videos showing how involved the process is and am not looking forward to it. This should prove to be an educational experience in surgical precision, keeping track of parts, not losing screws, and remembering what order things get installed.

Screen replacement was a success! :laugh: But wow, that was a lot of work. This has to be one of the most time-consuming screen replacements in the entire industry. As for the camera problem, the issue does persist with the back cover off, so it looks like I'll have to source a new camera module as well as a new back cover (which got slightly damaged in the process).
I'll upload some photos as the project progresses.
Fixed!... but with strings attached
Just to provide some closure for this fiasco, I did finally get the HTC One fixed and reassembled properly. Here's a quick recap:
Following the initial successful screen replacement, I bought a replacement camera module and back cover for the phone (because the problem persisted with the back cover off and because I had ruined the original back cover during the original disassembly). Upon installing both, I promptly reassembled the phone and discovered that the SIM card slot was no good on the replacement screen assembly. Talk about a major bummer!
From here, I was actually able to carefully remove the (shiny new!) back panel without causing any damage and requested a replacement screen assembly. Replacement was the wrong color. Two weeks later, the correct one finally came in, and I went through the (rather convoluted) procedure of painstakingly taking everything off of the screen assembly and placing it onto the replacement... again.
This time, everything worked, (including the SIM slot) so I slapped the back cover on, but was disappointed to find that the volume-down key had come out of alignment during the second back cover install. Also, the vibration motor had worked its way out of place and was rather noisy. For a third time, I ventured back in and managed to get the back cover off without causing much additional damage (there are some small marks on it now, but it still looks a heck of a lot better than it did before) and stuck some adhesive to the side of the motor in order to hold it into the slot better. I also performed the final snapping on of the back cover more carefully.
Finally, the phone is reassembled and fully functional. Camera photos no longer have a blurry edge, but are occasionally blurry either all over or in certain places. It is capable of taking completely clear shots though, which is interesting. Regardless, I've pretty much given up on getting this thing to perfection, and because of the fact that it isn't my daily driver, the camera not working right is not a dealbreaker. At any rate, it seems like finding a properly functioning camera module for this model is nearly impossible. Also, the right (bottom) speaker's volume is now sometimes a little quieter than the left (top) one, depending on the volume. As before, the MicroUSB connection still doesn't allow the cable to plug in all the way, which makes it really easy to accidentally disconnect, but it does still work fine.
With all that said, I've attached a picture of the repaired phone along with a new old-stock Incipio Feather grip casing that I found locally. The Incipio fits pretty nicely and I really like the feel of it, but debris sticks to it amazingly well. Even something as simple as wiping it with a cloth will leave behind a whole covfefe of specs. Liquid baptism and air drying is the only way to fully clean it.
TL;DR? Don't break your HTC One in a way that requires disassembly or repair. Ever. Even if the camera sucks, be thankful that it is fully functional (if it is). If you do attempt a repair operation of any kind, test the SIM card slot and camera (and speakers) fully before putting the thing back together and mind the volume keys as you put the back cover on.
