Question, for some reason i was updating a new skin and my vivid would not let me go into recovery, my only choice was Hboot and restore back to factory setting, that's fine because before i did backed up my ROM. once i root 2.3.4 i should be able to install my backup and continue where i left off correct? i should not have to unlock my boot-loader again?

That's correct. The factory reset only wipes your /cache and /data partitions. It doesn't touch the /system, /boot, HBOOT, Recovery, etc.

Hi guys. i have deleted a system file of my phone. and it turned off.when i turn it on it will still in cross picture.
i only rooted my phone.
no unlock
no custom rom and recovery.
so please help me.i need your help
What android version was it running ?
If not up-to-date, like 2.2.1, download stock 2.3.3, rename it "update.zip" and place it at root of sdcard, boot phone at bootloader, go to recovery, and try "apply sdcard update.zip".
That will install 2.3.3 over your old build, and reconstruct the system, your missing system files will be recreated. That doesn't wipe / factory reset your phone. Then you'll be able to re-root.
If you were in 2.3.3, updating in 2.3.4 will give you an working but not rootable phone.
If you was already in 2.3.4, I think you can't use "apply sdcard update.zip" method.
Have a try downgrading with "passimg", that may work, depending on your bootloader version and the android version you try to downgrade to.
I don't know if it wipe data / factory reset the phone, be careful.
If nothing work, unlock your bootloader and flash whatever you want.
But unlocking bootloader WILL data wipe / factory reset your phone.
Read the Wiki, "Unroot/restore".
i installed cm10.1 and i didnt like it so decided to move on with ViperVIVO 2.5.3. my device is s-on and hboot 2.02 .before installation, i wiped data/factory reset, wiped cache partition and wiped dalvik cache from CWM and full wiped from AROMA Installer. after installation phone stuck on new htc one logo(red) i did flash boot command as well, so i decided to go back to stock rom and go with s-off first and then try it again. i restored my backup from CWM and run fastboot flash boot command, after reboot my phone stuck on htc logo(original green) for a while and went to CWM t itself after reboot. so i decided to install cm10.1 again and created a backup and try to restore it and i did restore cm10.1 backup successfully, i used the same procedure which was used in stock restore. my question are
how do i back to my stock rom so i'll continue my s-off process?
second question is, can go to s-off process from cm10.1? and after that i can go to stock rom
third, phone filesystem upgrade to EXT4 after applying the viper2.5.3, may be EXT4 is the reason my phone is not restoring the backup. i dont know what are EXT4 or EXT3. so please give me some guidance for further steps please. regards

Is there an error while restoring the backup?
Some backups may fail and you are not able to restore all of it

no error just stuck on htc logo. i used command fastboot flash boot boot.img after restoring backup. i successfully restore my stock backup when i was stuck on cm10.1 so i dont think so s there any problem in backup
lets clear few things.
1- install cm10.1 (failed)
2- restore stock backup (successful) so no problem in backup
3- install cm10.1 again (successful)
4- install ViperVivo (failed) stuck on logo
5- restore stock backup again (failed)
6- install cm10.1 again (successful)
7- create cm10.1 backup (successful)
8- restore stock backup again (failed)
9- restore cm10.1 backup (successful)
bottom line is, stock rom was created before viper means before EXT4 filesystem and cm10.1 backup was created after EXT4. now i dont know when i wiped data/factory reset, wiped cache partition and wiped dalvik cache from CWM phone is still on EXT4 or not. is there any issue with EXT4 or im think on wrong side?? need help guys.
is there any other way to go back to stock rom? regards

You could install a RUU, that would give you a stock rom as well.
Need few more information.
HBoot Version
Did you ever changed Recovery?
Which recovery do you use actual?
And i think, if you are on S-On, recovery cant even backup a boot.img
Because with S-On, you have acces to System, data, cache, dalvik cache and the lib partition, but no acces to boot.img at all.

Hi there,
I recently rooted and flashed a custom ROM onto my Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini. I'm very new to this thing and find everything quite overwhelming, but I want to learn.
I flashed this ROM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2119219 (the v6 No Wipe version because I was petrified about losing my data if I factory reset), but the phone is now extremely laggy and buggy, so I want to go back to the stock ROM (so I can do a nandroid backup) and then try a different custom ROM like Dmod.
So, my question is, do I have to factory reset my phone to go back to stock? Or can I just flash this file (http://hotfile.com/dl/189271016/833...T-I8190N-BTU-I8190NXXALL6-1356151513.zip.html) using the CWN recovery menu without wiping? I'm asking because my phone keeps giving me an error everytime I try to backup using the CWM Recovery menu.
Thanks and if you need me to explain something in further detail, let me know.

That firmware is a zipped odin-file. Can't be flashed in CWM.
Make a cwm nandroid backup of your "/data" to your external sd (that's your installed apps)
You can also backup your apps and appdata using titanium backup or similar, for later restore.
Just remember to never backup/restore systemapps.
Backup internal sd to computer just to be sure, if you in any situation have to make a factory reset. Make sure any kind of backup is on your external sd before you make factory reset, or it will be lost forever

CWM has NO choice to backup/restore only parts of the device. Only a full backup is possible.
This is only in TWRP. Pity! I only use CWM because TWRP makes corrupted backups (three times) for me.
Or is it possible to pick out only DATA from the backup? And what is happen with the dalvik cache, which
consists of the byte-code for all installed apps, optimized for the ROM which created it?
"advanced restore and restore only /data". Is this the way in CWM that you mean @benz?
JackoMJ
Yes that's exactly what I meant, "advanced restore and restore only /data"
You don't have to worry about cache and dalvik because it's automatically created on the initial start.
thx for the information Benz (usefull in the future perhaps),
but i´ve decided to use Titanium Backup.

I just bought my first Android phone - HTC One. I'm loving it so far!! The guy I bought it from previously rooted it and ran several roms on it. I'd like to copy all the files to my computer and then figure out how to wipe all the folders back to stock (no need to have all kinds of roms and folders from apps he had installed previously, etc.)
Is there a way to do this and wipe everything back to factory?? I tried to do the reset through the OS but the files are still there. I also seen factory reset in the bootloader but havent tried it since I'm still learning and dont want to brick the phone.
If you have the nandroid backup of stock the mobile.
Then goto recovery mode and wipe all data, dalvik cache, battery stats.etc..then say restore..The original stock will be back.
If atall u see old files delete with no fear using root explorer.(be carefull)
If any thing goes wrong just restore the backup through recovery....
Good luck:thumbup:

Thanks ... I was thinking the same thing last night ... I thought after rebooting into recovery TWRP had a wipe function (not sure if this does a full wipe or not).
How would I restore a backup once I wipe the device if it wipes the entire device? Use USB and upload it back to the device then restore?
Lastly, I restored into the first backup the device has on it but unfortunately it has tons of stuff already installed on it and I'd like it to be a fresh build. Additionally, I'm only on version 4.1.2 and I'd like to upgrade if possible. Perhaps I can find a newer version of the factory AT&T image which is fresh?
I seen a 4.2.2 thread stickied on here ... would that be a factory AT&T image I could restore to after wiping the entire device of everything? Or perhaps I should try the 4.3 leak or even wait for 4.3?
My friend just got this phone and really wants to root it, but he also doesn't want to deal with the recovery every time he needs to update. So, is there any app that he can use to automatically backup the /system partition, reset it, and after the OTA restore it?
It's recovery or deal with fastboot. All you can do is manually unroot and revert mods. You're better off using the recovery, it's not difficult.
Also, if you backup your system, update it, then restore it, then you're back on the old version.
