Anyway, since instructions for flashing ROMs isn't pasted in a dozen different places like it is on most other subforums, I'll throw you a bone. Yes, you should probably do a data wipe or factory reset (in addition to wiping cache and dalvik if those don't get wiped during one of the previous wipes). In theory, the wiping can be done by the zip you're flashing, but it's not always the case so just do it yourself to be safe. Also, having just done one, I can tell you a factory reset (in CWM 6.0.0.8 at least) doesn't wipe your sdcard.

Tab only boots to recovery and wont flash after dalvik cache clear

I was running galaxian soup ROM 1.4 and wanted to flash to 1.5.1. Unfortuantely I was not paying as much attention as I should have been and cleared the cache before doing a wipe cache worked ok, dalvik cache got part way through and tehn rebooted.
Now the device wont boot into the OS and instead reboots into recovery. When in recovery, attempting to do a wipe or a flash or a dalvik cache clear all start and then reboot.
Anyone have an idea on next troubleshooting steps? ANy help is greatly appreciated.
Odin to stock & try again.
I assume you can get into download mode..

Thanks for the reply.
I used odin to get to stock based on the instructions and files in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1406137
The process seemed to work, the odin screen gave me a green pass

and the device reboot but when it did it just reboot to this screen.
Any help is appreciated.
That's a bad flash..
Redownload the ROM and flash again.
Gotta love when Odin brain farts.
;-)
Edit; failing that follow the overcome restock instructions and all should be well.
Goodluck!

In my case, usually when coming back from the ICS Betas, some weird stuff happened with my tablet in more than one occasion. Errors with partitions to sum it up. The only way to make the tablet boot once more into Honeycomb was...selecting the nuke (wipe/factory reset in the Stock Recovery) making me lose all SDcard contents. I don't know whether this also applies to you or not, but keep it in mind.

It should be safe as SPEEDMOD has MMC_CAP_ERASE disabled. I wouldn't be able to tell you it's 100% safe as the only thing I've tried via CWM are flashing several zips, wiping dalvik/cache and nandroid backup. Haven't tried flashing a rom or doing a factory reset via CWM. Im using Speedmod k3-3 btw
Personally I wouldn't flash any custom roms until this whole hardbrick fiasco is fixed officially by samsung. I am not confident enough to flash custom roms yet. I love my note and contented with stock+custom kernel, I couldn't afford to have it bricked.
My advice if you really want a custom rom, is to read the rom's installation instructions carefully, follow them and don't miss a step and as the old xda
saying goes, "FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK"
Good Luck!
As long as you will flash them from GB base and will never use Factory Reset / Data Wipe while on any ICS ROM you'll most definitely be safe. There's no 100% guarantee, but ROMs like CM9 use safe kernel and updated their update scripts to kill this bug.

Strange.
Did you try a factory reset? PS: backup first, it deletes all your data. If the settings reset doesn't work you can go to stock recovery and wipe data and cache.

You won't get a full backup, will lose a few apps data:
1. Google will backup contacts and some app data;
2. You can use an app like G Cloud to backup SMS and other stuff;
3. Finally, use Helix (Carbon) to backup more apps data.

TICK USERDATA. SSD. PERSIST, DIAG, APPS_LOG
TO WIPE USERDATA:good:
I have same question... it work?
Just flash the absolutely latest, or update via OTA, I think the overheating is fixed a little bit..

But you select: "TICK USERDATA. SSD. PERSIST, DIAG, APPS_LOG
TO WIPE USERDATA" ? how telling "rajaganesan7" and work? i need know
Yes, do it!
I know this is an old question but nobody really answered the question. I want to know what each of the SIN that can be wiped do. What if I just wipe DIAG? what would happen? or PERSIST? Same goes with excluding instead of wiping.
Even less straight forward, what do MISC TA do...
Sorry again for reviving an old thread
Select 5 ticks in wipe section. It will make a clean flash. you won't be any problem

How to change from CM12 to AOSP?

New here, rooted, switched from stock to CM. I just wanted to try out AOSP to see which one I like more. Is it just flashfire the AOSP ROM?

Yup. Just add a wipe action (system/dalvik/cache; data optional) *before* the flash action.
Does anyone know if the AOSP will work on 5.3.1.? Up above it says it is only for 5.0.1.

At present all custom ROMs for this device are compatible with all versions of FireOS v5 (specifically stock bootloader/kernel) released to date (5.0.0-5.3.2).
Some versions of FireOS are not currently rootable hence the rollback/upgrade dance. But that has nothing to do with ROM compatibility.
Great. One more question, is there a way to make a system backup? I don't have any files on it but reinstalling apps took a while..

Existing apps/data will remain if you do not wipe user/data partition. Really only need to wipe system and dalvik partitions when switching between custom ROMs leveraging the same base level of Android.. all ROMs for this device.
And me being the idiot I am, I forgot my pattern. Unless I guess it, I'll have to factory reset and root it again...
