Hi, I am Noobie & I'm currently using a Samsung Galaxy note, GT-N7000, on gingergbread 2.36, using the ..XXLB1 kernal, I bought the device in spain with a CSC- OXXLB1. * Whilst I absolutely love this device and would like to keep the ROM, I am really tired of un-wanted apps seemingly doing what THEY want, some of these apps appear hazardous to security. With this it's strange to own a "computer" and not have access to all its parts? Consequently I appear forced to "root" this device- and take charge!
After exhaustive reading of the XDA site (for which I am seriously grateful) It seems I have to flash with odinPC a pre-rooted "older GB rom" and then use the newly installed CWMR5 to flash any stock or custom rom after (as long as its chainfire!)- from the external sd card. Accepting this procedure is correct? I still have some questions that hopefully the forum can answer- before I comit to bricklaying! *
1. Is this the only method I can use? Will the device be exactly the same as before, but rooted, after re-upgrading back to the stock XXLB1, from chainfire- despite this rom being "not directly rootable"? *
2. In respect of using the external sdcard to flash from. Does it matter if I flash from sdcard via the usb port, or do I have to use the slot next to the battery? After flashing, does the zimage run from the device ROM, or do I have to keep the sd card installed- does this slow things down? What happens to the original ROM and boot loader? *
3. With CWMR5 it seems I can "wipe" all the caches etc- from recovery. What happens if I use factory reset- does it go back to original and lose everything else? Is it true I can only flash up to 50 times? *
4. Ordinarily I would prefer to flash the device ONLY through a PC based loader (odin/ heidemall). Noting my kernal seems to prohibit this, is it possible to completely erase every thing that comes with stock and re-flash, on a virgin device, any appropriate PDA, Modem, PIT file or boot loader of my chosing- ie be in a position to know exactly what my device is upto and "have Control"- you know, a Linux! *
5. Lastly despite rooting the device, as above, some users appear still to have problems with some apps not staying shut down or problems when deleting them. Such apps include "maps"and "mobile tracker"! Is this simply a case of setting permissions correctly and using a good start up manager, or are such apps so embedded that they can not be removed/ stopped? On my device every time I hit the "home" button a whole host of apps start up, if rooting cannot provide a way to solve this then it would appear almost pointless to root in the first place.
Sorry so many questions, but this is a tricky subject and it would be nice to clarify I am on the right track, if any one can answer any of them I'd really appreciate it. Trying real hard not to FUp!
Many thanks
1. you can just download a stock ICS rom for your country, flash it, root using hydracore kernel, cfroot or any custom kernel, then use triangle away to remove the custom binary counter,,, you can also flash custom roms...
all of these must be done after a lot of reading...
2. i don;t really get the part where you say "or do I have to use the slot next to the battery?".
but with respect to zImage or other files, you can delete them after flashing... the original rom or bootloader is replaced if you flash files that replace them..(i am starting to think that i am not making any sense, lol)
3. using factory reset deletes everything from the phone... that's why, it is often required before flashing custom roms... also, you can flash as much as you want, provided, that you FOLLOW instructions or else you may end up posting a "i-am-bricked topic", which is often accompanied by some whining.. LOL...
other users report that they have 100+ flash counters, which mean they have flashed more than 100 times...
4. i dont get the part where you say that your kernel prohibit you to flash... but you can flash anything, provided that again, you read the instructions..
5. i don't experience any of that, my guess is that you have a branded phone?? i am using an international note and i don't expience that...
to other members, please feel free to correct me i said anything wrong.. just trying to help a fellow here, i know the feeling of having a new phone, it's like living in a different world.
and yeah, thats one hell of a post, many users might find your post too long to read.

yeah atleast follow paragraph rules.. its really hard to point what exactly u want to achieve..
1: > to root.. best is to be on ICS > download a kernel for ur ICS rom from here > flash it from stock recovery.. u will have root and custom recovery.. no changes to apps or data wat so ever.. no triangle as well
2: > its not adviced.. its better to keep the flashing roms file internal storage or external SD slot besides the battery.. the OTG mite not mount in the recovery. what zImage are u referring to ?
3&4 : > Custom roms can only be flashed from CWM..Odin flashes stock roms.. if u do a factory reset it will delete all userapps and data.. but doesnot delete anything on the internal storage .. has to be done manually
for flashing roms
format /system
format /data
format / cache
wipe dalvik cache
5: > with root u can almost uninstall anything eg Titanium backup. with root u can control the apps that startup when boot, connectity changed, power connected, media mounted.. etc.. using (romtoolbox >autostart manager)/ (autostarts) etc.
Tired. need to rest my fingers
newer GB root
Thanks for replies, sorry about lack of paragraphs- copied & paste as I had a lot of questions and lost format in transition. (51 year old noobie!).
I am using a Samsung Galaxy note, GT-N7000, on gingergbread 2.36, using the ..XXLB1 kernal, I bought the device in spain with a CSC- OXXLB1.
I would like to root the device and keep as close to stock as possible. *
From the XDA site it seems, with my kernal being a newer GB kernal, I cannot use "zurgrush" or any other method for 1st root. It appears I have to flash a pre-rooted "older GB rom", from Chainfire, and then upgrade back to near stock ROM after. *
In respect of questions 1 & 2, and the responces.
I mearly wished to confirm if this was the only option open to me and also to check that after re-flashing chainfires XXLB1 kernal and ROM, that the phone would be as close to stock as possible- but now with root.
Both replies suggested I flash ICS, which I was not looking for (and it seems cwm6 can only be used on an original ICS, and not GB?).
After reading about all the problems with ICS I am happy to keep GB, particularly as this was written for my phone, in future I intend to customise this ROM to my own requirements.
However I am concerned that if I use chainfire/root to initially root my device, this may limit my option in the future?
For Q2. I just wanted to confirm that I could remove the external SD card after flashing, ie, is the new ROM flashed onto the internal SD memory. *
In respect of question 4. I was very surprised to read that Odin can only flash stock ROM's. I believed that Odin could flash any appropriate PDA, Modem, PIT file or boot loader of my choice? I would very much appreciate clarification of this situation as the forum gives the impression it is better to flash via PC, weather rooted or not? Note: All initial roots appear to be via PC? *
Thanks for your patience, I'm happy with answers to Q3 & 5. But dearly need clarification on my initial root options.
PS: The wise monkey watches his mates fall from the tree first. Many thanks. *
yep odin can flash PIT, files boot loaders and (PDA, CSC and PHONE but needs .tar file)
odin can flash custom kernels as well in .tar format.
newer GB problem
Hi, Samsung Galaxy Note, GT-N7000, on gingergbread 2.36, ..XXLB1 kernal, *CSC- OXXLB1 (Spain). I'm trying to root the device+ keep as close to stock if*possible? *
From reading the XDA, with my kernal being a newer GB kernal, I have to flash a pre-rooted "older GB rom", from Chainfire, and then upgrade back to near stock ROM after. *
I've just tried this method (using FACTORYFS.tar, as adviced)- via OdinPc. Unfortunately it did not work. Odin stops at "factoryfs.img", with no increasing status bar- this issue is covered in a Dr Ketan post (No:4- 3rd Jan, 2012).
All of the help from here assumes bricking- or resolution for allready rooted devices! *
Luckily I am not bricked & I am able to shut down the device, via 3 buttons, and the device will boot up as normal stock. After disconnecting USB cable, Odin prompts of a total write failure.
Tryed reloading drives, cables etc, but it just can not load the .img file.
I do not get any counter displayed in top right corner.
Note: The .tar file only had the factoryfs.img inside, the other file was a zimage kernal (after 1st unzip) do I need this? *
One last point is I am flashing from a 2000 laptop, with an older usb version- don't see why this should hurt unless the samsung drivers have issues, note the yellow high light suggests all is well before starting Odin. *
I am really stuck from here, would appreciate any advice as to what I can do now- even if it means I can not have a near stock GB.
Many thanks,
Hi Cheapskate1,
I have been following this thread for a while, because your situation seems very much to resemble mine. I have however hesitated to offer you advice because I am pretty inexperienced myself. I did however root my Note in the same way as you are trying, with much enormously valuable help from XDA members in this forum. And I found it very valuable to have the device rooted. At the moment you seem to be at the same point as I was here. I suggest you have a look at this thread, and try to follow what I did from there.
The first part of the way you can follow from the posts in the thread. In the second part of the process I was helped by an XDA member (Afilopou) who preferred to use PMs to communicate so as not to make the thread unnecessarily long. I have his permission to forward those PMs to anyone I think could be helped by them. I think I can safely say that if your Note will still start normally then you are not bricked. When I was at this stage the problem was the USB connection. So perhaps you could try a different USB port on your PC. The PC-Note USB connection is a tricky business in my (limited) experience with many variables which you may need to troubleshoot before it works.
I'll keep following your progress with interest.

Many thanks for your post syncopath,
I downloaded the usb drivers from softpedia and noted the file was a. Bin (binary), and dont,t know what to do with this on a windows machine?
These drivers appear to be a lower version from the ones I got from Dr Ketans tool box, which is 1.5.5.0.
Consequently I'm still stuck on the "factoryfs.img prompt.
It is worth noting my computer is an ME laptop, 2000, and I have currently a hacked version of XP running on it, and I note the compatability settings for the samsung driver application does not cater for this, only older machines inc, NT, but not XP.
The only other thing is my usb is not part of the boot run up, and so it might be any port I use would act like a "front usb instead of a "motherboard usb."
Anyone with any comments appreciated, I will try to find a newer machine to try again, but in the mean time- HELP
Thanks again,
newer GB rom
Hello again, Still do not have root???? *
Changed computer, loaded XP OS, Odin and Samsung drivers- v.1.5.5.0. Re-booted computer & started Odin added factoryfs.tar, before attaching phone, in stock recovery mode. Still had same problem, as "Syncopath" mentioned in previous post. Odin showed as follows, *
Com3 added,
Odin engine,
File analysis,
Set up connection,
Initialization,
Get PIT mapping,
Firmware update started,
Factoryfs.img. *
Essentially only things not changed are, phone/cable, plus computer OS and flash files.
Sincerity "yellow" flash, on ID:Com, is present- assume drivers are working?
Assume since Odin is able to setup firmware update, that all is fine untill Odin tries to flash the chainfire ROM .img file. *
The phones boot graphics are all static, none moving, with text in top left corner-
Odin mode,
Custom ROM- No,
Originial stock ROM- Yes. *
To me all of this implies the phone will not accept any custom ROM.
Which raises the questioning, can I flash a complete stock, say ICS, via OdinPC?
And then use a root method, for ICS, after?? *
I previously asked if the "zimage" file, that came from first un-zip, should be added to the .tar file. In some respects this makes sence as the .tar file only has the ROM image- factoryfs.img file.
Reasonably a modified kernal part would also be needed to circumvent the stock boot process??? Only guessing. *
Quite desperate for some advice now. Otherwise I will have to buy a pot plant- they come with roots pre- installed.
Perhaps all rooted phones should be named after plants??? TTFN.
lol... I would say best is to install stock ics and then root as its very easy and safe
u just need to download philz kernel and flash it from the stock recovery and bam u have root.

This is strange. I just re-downloaded from the softpedia link http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x86.shtml for Samsung drivers, and I get SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe I did select the "Softpedia Secure Download (US) [EXE]" link on the way. An .exe should be self executing on any Windows system.
I have just reloaded it actually as I no longer have the previous version. I see that nominally the drivers are for the Galaxy-S but this worked for me using my Note with Windows XP. I am now retrying it on my old XP laptop.
As things now stand, how do you see your Note's SD-cards in Windows explorer?

I tried the same link and got a .bin, even though the link stated. Exe (US). (No firewall or security centre).
Perhaps my hacked XP is an issue, I did try with internet online, re-Chasimodo?, but no update was saught! So assumed my drivers were ok, also had "yellow" light? And using Dr ketan toolbox drivers, v.1.5.5.0.
Havnt looked through "explorer" whilst flashing. Had looked when I was using kies once, is there any thing can be done here?
Thanks 4 driver advice, perhaps will try loading back to ME and seek driver update.
Presumably if I can use explorer drivers must be ok? Flip side.
One idea is it possible to use my galaxy Tab10 to flash to my note, its the only kit I have that hasnt been "robbed or modified"- not bad 12 yrs outa my old ME laptop- sgot ethernet & everything!. Ah- I've also got a small linux distro that works well- any thoughrs on this being a better way to plash- re- heidemall?
Please wait to reply until my next post. Re- Oops.
GB what next
Hello again, Oops, oops.....oops??? *
Accidently used "volume up/*power & home keys to put in flash mode! *
Normally I have used the volume down*key, which comes up with R2D2 and a "loading...." text displayed+ (top left text)
This relates to all my previous posts. *
This 2nd screen (from using vol/up), shows the "Samsung Galaxy Note, GT-N7000" splash, twice, and then displays the following at-Top left screen (Blue). *
Android system recovery (3e) * Enter: OK key, Select: vol UP/vol Down. Reboot system now. Apply update from sdcard. Wipe data/ factory reset. Wipe cache partion. Test redband fota[FS].
* There is Yellow text, mid screen, which details the boot up of the CSC, code PHE. Presumably this required to provide function for this "Boot/ Recovery" mode??
* My main question is what is the difference between the 2 start up modes- this appears to be a pretty crucial ???? Am I using the right one? * Is this recovery a pure! "Android" or a "Samsung mix"? * I have a stock GB on my external sdcard- yet I cannot access it through this menu?
* After pressing "apply update from SDcard", what is a DCIM instal? What is difference between- SDcard and USB storage (doH- is this the 32 pin power connector)?
* If I pressed the "Wipe data/ factory reset" will this clear the external SD or is it the same as a normal factory reset. * Does "Wipe Cache Partion" clear all partion tables (PIT files)??
* Lastly what is redband "fota". System boots normal, but I have previously added one update to phone? *
Because I,m not sure about all the above I will refrain from testing any further, if the forum could fill in the blanks, twood be jolly helpful. *
Old monkey- perfectly willing to fall outa the tree- but not sure of best route? *
PS: Is "cheapskate hacked off at my use of "cheapskate1"? I am after all notoriously frugal, with 20yrs at sea- I,m a skate! Private messages welcome. *

Nice one, what exacktly can be done in stock recovery- can I flash a stock ICS?
Re- your earlier post, Using the link provided by you- Philz/cwm6 and ICS,
About half way down, there is a comparison. Cwm6 v CF-root
And it says can only be used on existing stock ICS,
Please confirm, GB with non-prerootable kernal> to ICS via Philz/Cwm6 or
Flash stock ICS then Philz/Cwm6 to get root?
Can I flash stock via stock recovery, or better still Odin, what version of odin for ICS.
Keep cool

Philz is a stock ICS kernel with emmc erase disabled to make it safe. as its a stock ICS kernel..it will only work with ICS only.
so as u on GB now.. just upgrade to the latest version of ICS,
go to philz thread and download the kernel that corresponds to your rom,
install it from stock recovery
- OTA, and a very few mods can be installed from stock recovery.. and you cannot flash any ROM using 3e recovery

I suggest you get your desktop sorted first so that you can download the right files to it to install Samsung USB drivers and get your Note recognised. Trying to download files via your Note isn't going to make that easier and you need a properly functioning desktop to run PC Odin.

Please let me start out by saying that I have two epics and a tab, all sprint. I read and post and donate regularly on the Epic4g forums. I'm not a newb, just someone that is trying to get the most out of his devices.
I have read about 70+ pages over multiple threads including the bible and other stickies, spent several if not tens of hours...and I have to say I'm just lost enough to need to post this.
Please no slams, just help and post your answer, or click to another thread and ignore. Thanks in advance.
1. Trying to get Ext4. It looks like Ext4 is *maybe* doable if you try using a verizon tab flash somewhere, but I dont see enough replies to make me comfortable enough that it works. I have a class10 SD card, similar to what I have in my epic that is all ext4. Any advice ?
2. Trying to apply OTA for Sprint - I am on DJ29 baseband and DJ30 build. Cant get the OTA to work, it goes about 11seconds into the install and then I get triangle with an exclamation next to Mr Android. Reboots automatically, update doesnt apply. I *am* rooted, with z4root. I already went to stock using Privacy, but didnt flash anything.
3. Recovery. So...no CWM for Sprint ? Rom Manager isnt the same thing.....and doesnt have an option for Sprint tab anyways. What is working for the sprint tab?
4. Flashing. Im used to Odin, saw Heimdall (never used that), and dont see any recovery working here for Sprint...so stopped there just in case. Also seen reference to SGS. What is recommended for Sprint users.
5 After I get Ext4 and OTA, would like to try a good combo of Kernel and Rom, preferably overclockable. This is different than the Epic in that there, we just do Rom, and Firmware doesnt seem to be much of an issue - everyone just uses a base of the DK28 hack release or the stock release. Seems there are more firmwares here, mostly not for Sprint.
And to answer the top of the thread poll about *REALLY* liking the idea of a Sprint only subforum....OMFG yes. That would really make a lot of this easier......
Thanks again for the help.....I appreciate it guys.
anyone ? )))
Im also in need of sprint tab help as well, i heard voodoo say that conversion was successful after flashing this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=941781
however wouldnt boot and got stuck at the Samsung screen (boot loop)
since then i flashed this:
KhasMek.Voodoo.plus.CDMA.Tab.v2.zImage
and this together
KhasMek.DJ11.KleanMod.v2.ext4
still stuck at samsung, and now voodoo says "not enough space on partition" "system not available"
EDIT: i flashed back to sprint stock and all good
EDIT: i flashed KhasMek.Voodoo.plus.CDMA.Tab.v2.zImage again and still getting stuck at samsung after successful voodoo conversion.
Been stuck at the logo for ever think it has something to do with that hidden partition that tries to reinstall all your old apps -_-
This is exactly why I sold my sprint tab and got the t mobile tab. Just not enough support.
Someone got CWM to work on a sprint tab. You will just have to read the thread for that portion.
Good luck w/ getting what you need. It is tough to get stuff for the sprint tab.

Okay, you guys that want the ext4 conversion for sprint, why don't you try this, get heimdall all set up, download koush's zImage (last I checked it was a bad link in his thread so I've mirrored it HERE) and perform this command
Code:
heimdall flash --recovery verizon_zImage --kernel verizon_zImage
that should convert you over to ext4 safely and allow you to boot into your system (note, my K-lean ROM probably won't work on sprint tabs, I haven't confirmed myself though). If you can't boot, it will allow you into ROM manager where you can try a factory reset and that should allow you to boot. If you can't convert to ext4 (system giving an error about free space) you should flash the stock kernel via that same method (both --recovery and --kernel) and factory reset. Then flash koush's kernel the way I mention above.
Then, you can safely flash my kernel, but be sure at this point I'm only recommending people to flash via --kernel with my kernel, not --recovery too. This is because my recovery is still not 100% (or even 50%) functional atm (soon, gawds I hope I fix it soon!) and it's nice to have something to fall back on when you need to clear the cache or factory reset. This also causes my kernel to have some issues with the conversion process, which is why sometimes it leaves people at the samsung screen after it claims to have converted properly.
Should be in general

Don't flash my kernel with OCLF enabled, OCLF breaks a lot and doesn't produce accurate benchmark tests.

My Tab wont boot still -_-, Im seeing alot of crap in logcat when its trying to boot up, like old appz and games is there anyway to clear that folder, maybe something in there is stopping me from booting?
I think we need to sticky/pin this for us who just flash the stock/leaked GB 2.3.3 along with the optional root from this thread since we can't post there http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127249
Since this is the route that I went I would be able to help answer questions for others. I see cognition, mosaic.... but how about us who like to keep it stock?
Brickster
Just want to say that I have learned so much on here and I have a lot of fun trying out different ROMs. Thanks to all the DEVs, when I get a job I'll buy you guys some beers lol.
So... This has soft bricked my phone every single time. The first 4 attempts were from stock eclair. My last attempt I was successfully running Stock I9000 2.3.3 NEE so I thought I would try it from there. Odin gets to boot.bin and then says FAIL! I got into download mode using VOL DWN and PWR which is the key combination from Stock I9000 2.3.3 NEE. I have been running I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0 to flash back to stock after brickness.
So i'm sure i'm missing something pretty simple, but any help is appreciated.
Woah dude, that was very very very close to being a hard brick. Boot.bin is the primitive bootloader. so you had a kf1 pbl, and since you had the combos for I9k boots you obviously had an I9000 sbl, (secondary bootloader that's where the combos are contained.)
Make sure the usb chord is on a port attached to the motherboard (in the back of the pc), if it is already switch to another. Reboot the computer and try again.
But with such a close call like that, and the fact that you said it fails every time I would avoid it altogether I mean its a stock rom, is it worth bricking over??
Well, I really wanted to try the Cognition 5 v2 ROM. Instructions say to be on Samsung Gingerbread. So that's why I tried so many times and I am really more curious to find out why it's not working than I am worried about it bricking.
I was on a port directly on the motherboard Odin displayed as com10.
I was thinking that maybe it is my computer since most have success with this 1-click. I forget sometimes I'm running a 64-bit version of Windows 7 maybe that's the culprit. Is there anything I can check on my computer to keep this from happening again?

Use admin mode for Odin and change the compatiblity to Xp service pack 2. This is the best way to run Odin for Windows 7 x 64. Since I use Cog 5 v2, I strongly recommend following the instructions 100%. Please remember when you need to loading stock UCKF1 and when you load UCKF1, you are loading bootloaders, so any disconnection can brick you hard. Thank goodness for the simplified instructions there.
GB stock? I thougth captivate stock were eclair or froyo.
KF1 is the leaked gingerbread firmware for the captivate...

After changing the compatibility mode to XP pack 2 everything worked like a charm. Then I was able to successfully flash Cognition 5 v2. Sweet!
Thanks.
Hello. I use Darky's rom 10.2. And I have problem with Dialer. It sometimes crushes and exits. Problem will be solved with reboot. how can I fix it? thanks.
I would try to flash again and make sure you do a data/cache wipe. I've had random issues with other ROMs when I did not wipe, and all was fixed once I flashed properly.
I know I'm not wiping everything while flashing, but I flash it as told as in FAQ. But my memory will stay unwiped after I run newly installed ROM.
When you say "memory" what exactly do you mean?
If you mean the /sdcard storage partition, that is normal.
yes, /sdcard storage partition.
Before flashing, I get warning message about wiping all data in my internal storage... what does it mean then?
The /data and /cache partitions. And the dalvik cache.
The first 2 are in the cwm main menu. Wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache. Dalvik is in the advanced sub menu.
When i flash this, my phone asks me for a password. It won't let me do anything without the password and I have no idea what it is. I've tried samfirmware.com and that most certainly is not it.

It appears to be asking for some encryption password according to one of these guys that posted in the following thread. But there is a way to get past it by the method in this thread...http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...02&postcount=7
Remove ur external sd and copy over/back up anything u want to save from ur internal sd before u do this, just in case.
data/chache wipe i should do right after flashing right?
Seen an alpha 3 ICS rom. Can I just download that and flash it over my current rom or does it habecto be done certain way. I've flashed before on my evo but this seems a little bit more complicated

I'd rather go the full procedure they describe within their thread - imho especially you have needs for clockworkmod. Found that to be a quite safe way for me.
I would I just don't have access to a pc. Does ICS run fine on your tablet. Is it worth it
Sent from my SPH-P100 using XDA App
Once you have CWM Recovery installed, getting the ICS Alpha on your tab is not difficult if it's listed as supported in the thread.
Only thing: This is an ALPHA build. That means many things are not functional. The build is aimed at developers/testers.
Having given a shot at it, this build is surely not a daily driver for someone who needs its tab to be functional and reliable. Many of those problems have work arounds however but since the tablet is not mostly used by myself, I did not take the risk of having it be unreliable...
In short: it should work and not eat your hamster... But it is not a fully functional rom yet, be prepared for some trouble... Be sure you know how to go back in case of trouble... and read instructions carefully
If you want a good ICS rom here ya go. FYI!!! THIS IS FOR CDMA TABS!!!
Get rooted and CWM'd via Rodderick's thread in our Development section.
From there do the following (all credit to JT from here on out)
Download http://k.22aaf3.com/jt1134/vzwtab/cwm-recovery-5.0.2.7.tar
Extract the contents. You will have two files zImage and recovery.bin
Odin these two files to your tab while your tab is plugged in to the PC and in Download mode. This will bring your clockworkmod up to 5.0.2.7 which is a must to install the rom I'm about to link.
Next go to this thread
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/11697-rom-cdma-aosp-ics-cm9-build-31-0104-x-2/
At the bottom of the first post download the 3.1 ROM the 3.1 Patch and the gapps files.
Once those are downloaded boot your tab up to normal operations and plug it into your PC again. Now transfer those three files to your tab.
Boot up into clockwork recovery wipe the cache, dalvik, and do a factory data reset. Then flash the 3.1 file first, then flash the 3.1 Patch, then flash the gapps files.
If everything says it installed correctly the only things that won't be working are camera (which it does work in panorama mode) and possibly 3G. (Never tested 3G as I only use wifi).
Can you please post pictures and how can I check which cwm I already have? If I already have 5.0 can I just go ahead and flash? One more thing is this a whole new ICS or the ones going around. Thank you much
So I checked and I got 4.0 cwm. With that said. I don't have access to a pc. Is there any other way to upgrade to 5.0 cwm? PLEASE someone reply with yes. I'm getting bored with this andcwpuld like to try ICS. Thanks

Without access to a PC I think you are making life very difficult for yourself.
You do not state what Tab you have; below I linked to the install for the P1010 only...I did this for reference because you will see it required Odin to flash it i.e. access to a PC.

Thank for the reply. Yeah I know it makes it, harder just seeing if there was a way around it. I'm playing with the sprint galaxy tab. Not much to play with out there for it.
Hi,
I was quite happily running ICS4.0.4 (rooted) when I decided to try a different ROM (and/or JB - can't even remember any more).
After I did a wipe (I know, I know!!!) it got stuck on the boot logo screen.
I had the phone fixed by a 3rd-party repair shop, who installed ICS4.0.3 on it and, while at the shop, I used the phone a bit to make sure it was ok.
It kept crashing intermittently, so they had another go at it and now they tell me they could only install GB on it.
So, keeping in mind that the phone had the emmc bug and I tripped over it:
Is there anyway I can install ICS again on it?
I could use some of the tools floating around to detect damaged partition blocks and work around them.
What procedure should I use to go from a stock GB (non-root) to ICS?
Specifically,
- is there a safe way to root GB (given the emmc damage already), so that I can flash the other ROM/kernels (below)
- what kernel should I use
- what ROM should I use
I would greatly appreciate any help on this. I have been eating humble pie for a week now, so I hope there is no more 'why didn't you pay attention' coming my way
Cheers
You could use hydracore kernel which works with all GB and ICS ROMs and JB none Tw ROMs I be leave you can flash with PC odin to gain root and is a safe kernel

Thanks ttibbetts83, I will try that and see how i go
Thanks Arobase40.
I'll get a strong coffee and read your reply from top to bottom and then plan my next move.
The repair was done by people unrelated to Samsung.
I currently have GB v2.3.5, (SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS) which works well, it would seem.
I'd love to get ICS back on it but need to gather info (such as that from yourself) before I do anything.
A bit more info on the state of the emmc storage: Using 'adb shell' and executing the command DD did in fact find bad blocks in partitions 9-11 (can't recall right now exactly which ones), so there are issues there.
The partition that is in place now, __appears__ to have successfully skipped those bad blocks.
And on something slightly tangential to the current topic, I know that doing a 'WIPE DATA' from the recovery menu zaps emmc, but does that also happen when you do a factory reset from within Android? From memory, when doing so, it seems to go into recovery mode and do it, so I'd expect that it'd also damage emmc.
Cheers

As opposed to all alarmist and contradictory posts about eMMC bug on stock Samsung ROM : GB or ICS, I never got any issues with this so called eMMC bug and never got bricked G-Note as long as I kept at using the stock kernel, nevertheless I made various and numerous wipe whichever the ways (from recovery or the settings)...
For rooting, I always used the temporary Touch CWM to flash (which has been may be removed from XDA, I guess as it was supposed to cause bricked devices) anything : superuser, busybox, and other custom ROM... ^^
BUT when I flash a custom ROM, I always removed the custom kernel (so called "safe"), and replace it for a stock kernel and never got issues with it.
The first and last time I flashed a custom with custom kernel I got my G-Note bricked (just forgot the replace the custom kernel for a stock one... ^^) !!!
So, if you want to flash an ICS version, get one from Sammobile, and flash it with PC Odin !
You shouldn't have any problem with them !!!
Get all root and busybox files from dr Ketan, and if you can find it again use the temporary Touch CWM which has NO kernel inside : it WORKS quite fine !!!

Unfortunately there are no high trees on XDA beause you should look for one before typing this utter personal nonsense that could brick anybody's Gnote.
Taking your own convictions for thruth is one thing, sending innocent ppl into the jungle is another...
What you are saying is: If there is a lightning storm, just go into an open field en enjoy. I cannot say it is 100% safe, but I never got struck....I think they removed the tree i used to seek shelter from the rain, but if you search real hard you might find it anyway.

Actually you should be happy that they revived your Note after brick even if it's only running GB for now.
However if you are a brave person you can do the same trick on ICS.
Just read and understand the thread that is a guide on doing so.
You can root your GB without a problem, but there is no obligation for it to install ICS with odin.
However what you do need is the following (besides a lot of patience and courage) :
1. get the ICS files you want to flash including the pit file.
2. get a program called PIT MAGIC to recreate a suitable pit file
3. determine where your bad blocks are located
4. Load the pit file into the magic program and alter the stock pit file
with the values needed to ommit your bad emmc area
5. save it and then flash your note in odin with your newly created pit file and repartition ticked.
@OP: could you please check your internal storage capacity? Is it aroung 8GB?
Arobase we are not going to rediscuss this matter for another 556643 pages.
Just ask yourself : if there was no problem then why did samsung patch their JB kernels for it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34933643&postcount=683
Also nobody asks you to reconsider your own experience and beliefs, but the day someone follows your instructions and bricks his phone, are you going to pay for a new motherboard ?
I'll stop this discussion here, and just hope nobody will get struck under the tree.
Bought a second hand Note. It's rooted as CWM on it. It won't update OTA (no updates showing at all for the past couple of days), and it's on 2.3.6.
Can I manually install an update via Odin? If so which one?
Direct links would help, I'm a bit of a noob

Being a 'noob' isn't an excuse for not looking. Go to the stock ROM sticky thread and try actually looking next time.
It's always so much harder when you have to try (David Gray).

No here's a better idea - stop being a lazy
If you want someone to do it all for you, there are websites you can pay to root your phone. XDA is NOT that place.
There are threads already for this but you are just to lazy to lift two fingers to look
So you call me an ass? Okay buddy I'm an ass because your too lazy to read the guide that someone spent hours making that is at the very top of the forum as a sticky note in capital letters.
And yet with 152 posts you still refuse to just look at the guides that are step by step instructions because you expect to be spoon fed
Let's look at your other threads "which rom is best" "how to root my desire" and so on
Its not like you even try to look. You just over and over break xda policy and are lazy. Get with the picture and follow the rules
No reason to call me an ass, I am actually a very useful and helpful person to many people on this website. But everyone is expected to at least TRY to look before posting, which you consistently refuse to do (as your previous threads for other devices proves)

Never said you weren't a useful guy. However you for some reason insist I didn;t look beforehand. I made a thread to make sure I didn't mess up my phone, I didn't know if I could flash stock firmware over a root + recovery or not.
So before you attack members in their first post with a new phone, I'd suggest you'd think twice.
I appreciate your work. Bye.

Here is my post from the philz thread. Let Mr know if u have questions. Please also be SURE to read the brickbug sticky thread
TO ANYONE READING THIS POST - NOTE THAT THIS IS ALL SPECIFIC TO UOGRADING FROM GINGERBREAD ONLY
@onetonnoodle Honestly, if you like the features of Sweet Rom, it is an Amazing rom (maybe the best?), but I personally (when I use touchwizz interface) prefer a stock interface, which is why I like @ThaiDai's stock-deodexed LT9. If you were thinking of sweet rom, just go with it. It really is spectacular and constantly updated. Just be aware you may issue a couple bugs here and there because it is in constant development, but they always get fixed right away.
Regarding hardbricking, as long as your only doing wipes while PhilZ kernel is installed, you are safe. Remember anytime a new rom is flashed it overwrites the kernel with whatever is packaged with that rom. Also any gingerbread kernel philz or not are safe. Be very careful if on an ICS ROM though.
There are 3 ways that I would do it. Obviously, there are about 100 ways to do this. These are the methods I may use
IF ITS GINGERBREAD COMPATIBLE (I dont remember), the Mobile Odin Pro method is by far the easiest way
Here is one Method (easier, but only if u have pc odin setup):
1. Flash Sweetrom via PC odin
2. it wont boot because of all your old gingerbread data. After turning it on, immediately boot to recovery. Do a factory reset, or if you want a completely clean install do a full wipe and then reflash sweetrom again via recovery.
3. reboot to system
4. YOU WILL HAVE A YELLOW TRIANGLE. Use Triangle Away from XDA (its free) to remove that, but this does have a risk.
Mobile Odin Method this would be my first choice so long as your GB rom is rooted
I think mobile odin is compatible with gingerbread. You will have to download sweet rom to your phone.
If it is, you can use mobile odin to flash the sweetrom zip, you are already on gingerbread so you are brickbug safe...
If mobile odin is gingerbread compatible, which i believe it is, this is really a simple method.
Obviously your gingerbread ROM has to be rooted if you want to do this.
NOTE: you will get issues because mobile odin doesnt really do a full wipe. if hte issues do arise you can reboot to recovery included with sweet rom and just do a factory reset and you will be fine.
Here is yet another method to update:
1. Open the browser ON YOUR PHONE. *(a) Download SweetRom to the sdcard (internal or external); (b) Download the newest LT9 Philz kernel to your sdcard also.
* **Note: if you have issues getting the download to complete, try opera mini browser because it supports resume downloads.
2. [OPTIONAL STEP, not required] Flash Abyss 4.2 kernel, and do a full nandroid backup in recovery... * I personally would skip this step. *I dont even know if you could find abyss anymore, but I am making an option for you to get a nandroid backup of your gingerbread rom that will boot... *really though, dont waste your time on this unless you want to assure you have a full backup of gingerbread with a gingerbread kernel
3. *Unfortunately, you can't flash philz directly from your 3e recovery (because you are on gingerbread)... it will give a signature verification error. *so you can either flash it via PC odin, or do an OTA upgrade and then flash it (be careful, once you do this you are not brickbug safe).
4. Flash PhilZ LT9 Kernel from either Abyss if you did step 2 (optional), from your stock android recovery if you can put it on your external sd card *only if you did an OTA update , or via PC Odin if you dont have an external SD Card. *Be sure to follow the philz flashing instructions step by step.
5. NOW YOUR PHONE WILL NOT BOOT. dont be alarmed, you only want to go to recovery. *You will have no issue getting into recovery as long as philz flashed properly. *Your phone now has a JB kernel with a GB system, this is why it won't boot.
6. boot recovery (power - volume up - home held until you get to philz touch interface)
7. Go to factory reset, and choose the wipe all option (this wipes /system /data /cache /preload and .android_secure). *Your phone now has no system, but will retain the philz kernel and touch recovery.
8. no need to reboot recovery. *Just go to flash the Sweet ROM Zip. *let it run.*
9. reboot to system
10. Done. *it will already include the kernel.
If you are confused about any step, dont even start the process. ask first.
And be aware, there is always a risk doing this. It won't brick your phone, but you may softbrick it and lose recovery if something goes wrong. The solution for this is to use PC Odin and flash a ROM via PC Odin.
Thanks.
