Hi, I've looked around but not been able to find anything that really answers this question.
I'm tempted to buy an Xperia Z when they come out in the UK. Unfortunately it will be a branded phone (there is no way around this unless I want to pay alot more money).
My question is for 3UK customers with an Xperia T. Are you able to unlock your bootloader using Sony's official method? I have read that simlocked branded phones can be nearly impossible to unlock on certain networks.

Not true.
I have a branded vodafone T and I can unlock. I would suggest you speak to 3UK and ask them, and if they cant answer your question take your business elsewhere.
I made sure I could unlock with vodafone before renewing my contract with them.

I have an Xperia T on 3UK, and it is very much locked. However, I have debranded it using the stock UK ftf and flashtool - and I am really quite enjoying using the Sony provided ROM.
Not sure if that helps, I suppose it depends how much you would like to muck about with your phone after receiving it!

Not sure with regard to your query about 3UK branded phones being bootloader locked however I understand that Carphone Warehouse phones are generally unlocked to any network and allow bootloader unlocking. If you were to get a phone from them on a 3UK contract then you should be ok - when I was looking for a T I popped in and queried this with them first and they suggested all of their phones are sold unlocked regardless of which network contract you choose. Phones 4 U have a similar approach but don`t offer deals on the 3 network.
Vodafone keep their phones SIM unlocked that's why you could unlock it Greg... But with carriers like 3UK they brand and SIM lock hence no CM goodness for me

Sim unlock and bootloader unlock have nothing to do with each other. You can have a sim locked phone and unlock the bootloader, and you can have a sim free phone and not be able to unlock the bootloader..and every combination in between as they are independant of each other

But fastboot locking is, or at least was in 2011 line, and unlocked by way of certificate replacement which unlocked everything, but sold as SIM unlocking causing confusion.
I think even with unlocking code from network, fastboot will remain locked.

If a carrier has made the bootloader unlockable then having the code from sony will not unlock it.
If the carier removes that restriction that allows the bootloader to be unlocked AND removes sim lock then tha is the carrier merging the two locks. They could just remove the bootloader restrictions AND keep sim lock if they want.
You can get an unlocked bootloader phone that is sim locked and vice versa. What carriers do with their locks is what they add to the phone after android and after Sony have done their thing.
They are still independant from each other unless the carrier has merged them, so my point stands, ask the carrier if you can unlock the bootloader. If the sales persone does not know what that means then go elsewhere. If they so not its not possibel because of sim lock they are lying as it is possible, its just maybe needs a bit of effort from them to be bothered. Then take your money elsewhere.
I have been into plenty of phone shops and they look confused when you ask them these questions, I just take my my business elsewhere and get what I want.

Except that with any Sony Android phone I am aware of, if the device is sold SIMlocked, it is not whitelisted in the bootloader unlock database.
While the two are technically independent, it is pretty much unheard of to see a Sony device that is sold with SIMlock but has an unlockable bootloader, and similarly, you never see devices with a non-unlockable bootloader but no SIM lock.

Hmmm it's not looking good then.
Unfortunately my device will have to be 3 branded (for reasons I'm not going to go into here).
I think I will probably contact 3 and see if they can shed any light on what to expect.
It's not the end of the world I guess, I can still put Apex on there and make it look how I want if I don't like stock. Nice to have the option though.
It would be stupid if SIMLock would be on and bootloader lock off cause u could easily remove SIMLock.
So in this case bought are related but in opposite direction - not. Cause I got SMS Code to remove SIMLock but that didnt made my bootloader unlockable.
To bad Orange is the only operator in my country which locks bootloader in Sony devices. (wish I'd knew that before signing contract)

Not sure about that. I have never heard any posts claiming that unlocking the bootloader makes it easy to simunlock. Could share with us how that is possible?

If u have unlocked bootloader u can use fastboot and also u r able to load any software u like. So its easy to remove simlock.

I can confirm that the 3UK Xperia T is bootloader locked (no fastboot). I rang up Three and they said that it is not possible to allow bootloader unlocking on it (gave me a bull**** excuse about warranties and such, and I explained how I am aware than bootloader unlocking voids the warranty and that is the same for all phones).
However I do suspect that it depends on who you speak to as to what answer you'll get.

I spoke to 3 today both customer service and in store technical adviser, they told me that they are unable to unlock the boot loader and I need to talk to Sony directly and ask them for instructions on how to unlock the boot loader.
I have sent them an e-mail and waiting for their response. Will update as soon as I have a news.

Why dont you just follow the instructions from their website......?
If your device says Bootloader unlock allowed: No Then they will not do it,
If it says Bootloader unlock allowed: yes then they will just direct you to their website to follow the instructions to do it...
I'm thinking of pre ordering the Z and I'm just wondering about the bootloader.
I've read mentions of the Three version (which is the LTE version) coming with a locked bootloader. I'm just unsure of the scale of the problem; my previous phones All came locked but that didn't stop some xda genius unlocking it for me. Will non-Three devices just come pre-unlocked, with the Three version just requiring a bit of extra work? Is the Three version even in unlockable? (Bad question to ask before it's even out, sorry)
I'd greatly appreciate if anyone can clarify the above points
My Xperia arc bought 2 years ago has a locked bootloader, I can't answer whether SIM unlocking it will unlock the BL too.

I got it coming on Three UK too. If the bootloader is fully locked then it will be going back, simple as that.

Dam I'm with 3 and it's on pre-order I hope the boot isn't locked I will not be happy! Saying that my Note 2 wasn't 3 branded when I got it in November...

I had a 3UK Desire HD and I've had no issues unlocking etc....Lets hope things aren't different with this phone....I guess things could have changed in 2 odd years
I've put the question forward to them on Twitter but I bet they'll say they don't know.. They should know stuff like this though, no excuses for not knowning.

No Sony phone comes with unlocked boatloader.
It's UNLOCKABLE bootloader which is the key word. All sim free phones are unlockable. i.e. you can go to Sony developer site and have it unlocked for free after entering your imei number. When Sony do this they check that the imei is that of an unlockable device.
When sony chose to become developer friendly they allowed the unlocking of bootloader but because of agreements with networks they wouldn't unlock carrier locked devices. Hence when you go to service menu (phone dialer - *#*#7378423#*#*). You will see the status saying "unlockable bootloader= No."
Even if you unlock the sim lock on your phone it will NOT make your bootloader unlockable by the official Sony method.
So as an answer to OP 3UK phones will not have unlockable bootloader by official method unless for some reason they decide to provide sim free phone rather than their locked ones. WHICH I GUARANTEE THEY WONT.
It won't be the end of the world though, because afterall we are in a developer's site and some incredibly smart guys on this site will eventually be able to hack the bootloader for ALL DEVICES.

S-ON/OFF is HTC.
I am new and I found this out myself it isn't hard.
Sony Bootloaders decide if the phone is easily modified (ie. rooted, abled to flash roms/kernels easily). The Bootloaders are all locked from stock, and are "unlockable" depending on if your phone was from a carrier. Carriers determine if your bootloaders are locked, so the chances are if you purchased direct from a Carrier online shop then no, it will NOT be unlockable. Usually the case as I have read is that if the carrier usually SIMLOCKS the device, then it will be NOT unlockable. This is because the carrier already processed the phone and added the simlock etc.
Carphone on the other hand if you have bothered to Google. Usually sell unlocked/sim free stock. This is because the nature of how they work. They stock simfree stock because they will need to hold less stock since they don't need to hold X amounts for each network that way. Simfree stock means unlockable bootloader.
I currently with Three and on a monthly rolling contract which include the all you can eat data. Anyway I am currently using Sony Xperia V sim free phone and bootloader status is Bootloader Unlock allowed:Yes.
I currently looking to upgrade to Sony Xperia Z/ZL sim free. Yet I course I had to pay hundreds of pounds for the smartphone but I can change smartphone, unlock also I look to rooted locked which can be achieved as I do not want to break the BE or music download info in walkman etc. Also signing with contract phones with Three I think you three animation at boot time which I do not want, I can end the contract for another contract is another factor.
So you see some of the reason for choosing a monthly rolling contracts rather than 12/18 long contract you sign up for and no choice but to stick with it until the end of choice once signed on dotted line.
I think you find the Sony Xperia sim free smartphone bootloader are actually locked but you get a status bootloader unlock allowed:yes therefore you can and have to unlock it yourself.
It when you choose to buy these Sony Xperia phones on a 12/18 month contract that are locked and you get the bootloader status it cannot be unlocked as no.
My advice is choose monthly rolling contract with Three which I think is great.

Carphone have said and confirmed all phones sold by them (unless obviously stated) are unlocked sim free stock. This will mean you can buy any contract from them and the phone would be a sim free unlocked phone with the bootloader unlockable = yes.

I've never rooted a Sony phone before, only Samsung's and HTC's....will buying my phone from 3 direct cause any problems for me??

Yep its completely locked so you wont be able to root it at all. Found out today when I spoke to them.

If there's a flaw in the locking code then yeah but you wont be able to unlock it via sony's developers site straight off and there's no saying anyone will ever find a way to do it. I hate carriers!!!

WRONG/not entirely correct.
bootloader unlocking and rooting are different. Usually in most cases with xperia phones in the past a decent dev, -usually by the names of doomlord, bin4ry, or other usual suspects , find an exploit to root a certain firmware version, without the need to unlock bootloader. So whether that firmware is locked to 3 or is sim free is irrelevant. You should still be able to root, provided someone has been able to find the exploit.

I'm talking more than just rooting. CM10 is a no no or any other rom without the bootloader unlocked.
Hi, I'm from Mexico and bought a Z1 in Telcel plan (the original model was 6906) I have about 4 years using phone android, I wanted the HTC One but take long time to get here to Mexico, so desperate and buy me this Z1 and I'm really disappointed as I do not understand why some models like mine can not unlock the bootloader, because among other things I can not flash any custom room, or having a good kernel tweaks. (I really love Carbon room) All this regardless of the phone too easily scratched screen, and failures of touch sensitivity on the right edge, I guess be for the location of the buttons.

Because your phone is on Contract and they locked the Sim and Bootloader for security. One day when the contract expire or your phone get old you will be able to unlock sim but no bootloader. It's a deal made between your Carrier Network and Sony. If you buy a Unbranded and Sim Unlocked Z1 you don't have this problems.

I bought my Z1 branded and sim-locked and i was allowed / able to unlock my bootloader. So, what you said has nothing to do with reality. And by the way ... could you tell us how you got that information?

It is in that way but no all the Carrers Applay that method. Just google it. This argue was mention 100 times on XDA too.

Why some Z1 models can not unlock the bootloader?
Thanks, there are many topics dealing with this but there is no a clear answer, I already flash one room unbranded but 6903 because as I said the original model was 6906 so I have unlocked the sim, I read out there on xda that taking it to sony service, as has unlocked the sim, they can change unlocking bootloader allowed: NO by Yes.
I'll try this way.

It's about specific negotiations between Sony with each Carrier
Telcel decided they wanted to keep the bootloader locked, thus C9606 will be permanently closed.
There are ways around this, but it WILL void warranty.

Unlocking Bootloader will avoid warranty in any case, Yes or No, buy actually the Developers on XDA they saying is no way around and you can't unlock if the Bootloader Unlocking Allowed is set up to NO. So when you buy a phone from a any Carrier make sure the Bootloader Unlocking Allowed is set up to Yes.

Here in mexico punish us with prices, sony officially sold the Z1, at $ 1000 usd (no brand) With a 2-year contract I could get $ 350 usd in telcel. Besides, very few models get really good, slow to arrive and bring an outdated firmware. Google does not sell their phones officially. But I want to unlock the bootloader because I am almost certain now that the bugs are resolved that brings z1, soon going to release a firmware google edition for z1 (I really wish it) and I need to unlock the bootloader to install.

Check your bootloader, just write *#*#7378423#*#* and go to Service Info > Configuration > Rooting Status if there is Bootloader Unlock Allowed: NO probably you can't unlock your bootloader. Call Sony Center and ask if this is possible but no guarantee about that.

Are you positive about this?
I was under the impression you could get around the locked bootloader even if the device says No.
I'm not sure if I even want to try because I would permanently lose the Bravia Engine should I succeed. I'm not sure what it's supposed to do, but it sounds nice.

if the device says unlocked bootloader: No, then it cant be done.
sim lock and bootloader locked are depends on your carrier, there are carriers that they have locked the sim only and still allows bootloader unlocked.
but some carriers locked both. you can get a phone which allows to unlocked bootloader, if you buy a free sim phone or bought not in the carrier contract but from other store like sony store or any store that sells free sim phone.
please dont make things complicated.

With Unlocking Bootloader you will lose X-Reality, which is not a big deal anyway because it not improve the images, and Bionz processing but actually this not influence the functionality of the camera at all. No body said about Bravia Engine, I hope not.

I just wondered if anyone had gotten any news from Sony as to if the bootloader on a not allowed model van be unlocked in anyway?
I'm aware that threads exist and ppl are flashing roms on handsets with locked bootloader but I think those are allowed to unlock theirs.
Is there still no way to unlock bootloader on disallowed models either officially or unofficial?

Just to add a little clarity to this, gregbradley helped me a lot with this.
If you've bought the phone from a carrier then there is a distinct chance that the bootloader unlockable status will be a flat no.
What does this mean?
This means that you will never (unless someone cracks it, highly unlikely) be able to unlock your bootloader.
If you bought your phone from certain carriers (like 3 in the UK, or so i'm told) or from third parties like carphone warehouse in the UK, then you WILL be able to unlock the bootloader, as the status for unlocking the bootloader will read "Yes".
If you see a yes then youre in luck, if it reads no then you most certainly will not be able to unlock the bootloader.
Further to this, Sony will not help you with this whatsoever, I have asked and asked and got little more than a scripted response, they WILL NOT help you to unlock your bootloader.
The sim being locked to a particular network means nothing to the bootloader, it's simply a coincidence that third parties who have bootloader unlockable phones are too sim free.
Hope this clears things up for people who weren't sure.
AFAIK, it is at the carriers request that the bootloader is in this state, not Sony's, probably why they won't help with it, but that's a guess.

You can still have all the goodness of custom roms m8, you just won't be able to flash kernels like doom kernel and or AOSP rom's and CM10 based roms.
In all fairness, youre not missing out on too much, but I was the same when i had a locked phone, the grass always appears to be greener on the other side until you realise it's actually not.
Is anyone working on breaking this problem? Hate myself for getting this phone now, everyone else is running away with custom kernels and any soft headed person who decided to go with their provider is also stuck unless their provider didn't ask for it to be locked down.
What is the actual difference between the two phones? Unlockable or not unlockable? Could one not be migrated to the other or is that not possible?
I want to stretch this phones legs and i'm unable to because of it.
Any help, input, pointers would be grateful.

Unfortunately talking from experience with Sony Xperia Z and other Android phones, this has never been possible. Bootloader unlock allowed: No on Xperia Z has not been hacked after all the time that the device has been out, I would not count on a solution for Xperia Z1.
Sorry to put your hopes down, but most likely this will never be possible.

No real developers have openely said they are working on it.
A few people have tried a few things but this needs someone with real developing/hacking skills (Like the_laser).
The problem is that all the developers know to get unlockable phones, so they don't have/need to work on the bootloader issue.
Adam Outler was given an Xperia T with an bootloader that says no, and he gave up after a few months.
You aren't missing anything mate.
Before Z1 I had Xperia S, I unlocked bootloader and when I tried every ROM on XDA..... I settled down on @niaboc79 eXistanZ. (stock based ROM for locked and unlocked bootloaders)
Believe me, we'll get many great things on Z1 you just have to be patient.
Now I bought Z1 with a bootloader locked (unlockable), I knew that from the beginning and I didn't care.
When Z1 recive 4.4 and few other devs join here, you'll see you'll have many different ROMs to choose...
Yes, it's true, you can't get custom kernel and maybe you can't OC your CPU or GPU but Z1 has quad on 2.2 Ghz and there's really no need for 2.5Ghz or 3.0Ghz.
Remember, we are using phones, without cooling system and OC will overheating hardware and that's not good...

Yea you're right m8, I do like the phone, it's just the first time i've not been able to use the other kernels.
What about the likes of PA and AOSP rom's, don't they need a kernel from the likes of doomlord to work?
Great if they don't, i don't stick with them for very long but it's nice to try them out from time to time.

I'm thinking about calling them and complain. There is NOTHING in my contract with them that says anything about locked boot loader.
The only thing that is stated is carrier-locked to Telenor. Ok, so I can unlock that after 12 month or find another webpage that can do it for me.
I talked to Sony Sweden about it and they said the normal jobberish about they don't wan't us to change "software", Their branded software. Well after 12 month they let me unlock the phone. Why not then letting me change "software". No the phone will still be locked. I say that is to not follow the contract. They say I can unlock my phone after 12 month, then why not let me ? No, they only let me unlock the carrier-lock. So in theory the phone will still be locked to Telenor. That's whats wrong with the contract.
Am I barking up the wrong tree here, or might there actually be a little loop-hole that I can use to get my phone unlocked or maybe even get a replaced phone ?

No the phones simlock is nothing to do with the fact that the bootloader can't be unlocked, although it is most likely your carrier who is responsible for the bootloader not being able to be unlocked in the first place.
They are unrelated instances, as far as i know and without some serious tinkering the bootloader will remain the way it is, it seriously sucks and I hate myself for doing it now but it is what it is, the only plausible way out would be if sony were to swap the phone out for one with an unlocked bootloader, i'm sure it is our consumer right to do what we want with our property, especially seeing as Sony has an official page on how to unlock the bootloader officially.
I find this approach to their software preposterous and well you've already seen me have a rant, i'm not a happy bunny.
My guess is that if your carrier replaces the phone then you will get another locked BL, but if for some reason you can get Sony to replace it then you may get one with an unlockable BL, that is the only way around it so far as I can see.

I called Telenor and talked to them. They put me through to the support. They coulndät do anything they said. I called Telenor again and got connected to what they called their Sony Xperia support. Got to talk with a nice guy who told me that. Yes it is possible to get by this locked boot loader, but I had to go through Telenor. However, he told me NOT to call them, but to go to an actual store and talk to them. So acording to him, Telenor should be able to solve this issue. I'm still not convinced. But I guess if I can get Telenor to accept fault on their part, maybe they can get Sony to fix it ?

I would take that advice with a pinch of salt, it sounds a little too good to be true, i hope i'm wrong there but my guess is that they won't be able to do anything, I know all the people in the EE store by ours and all of them haven't got a clue what day it is, if i ask about a bootloader they'll probably spaz out.
But hey if it works for you then that's superb.
I believe sony said February would be the launch month for it unless I'm mistaken, i know it's not quite the end of February but is sony really going to be Mr last second and launch like at February 28 11:59pm?

Usually a update is "simulaunched" and would launched all at once
I think i read some time ago that Sony pushed their Z3 and Z2 update to March.
Either way, Z1 will get it later, and Z even later than that. I believe IF we get it by summer its gonna be really cool.
but i kinda wish we dont get it so soon, at least not before Google fixes the damn MEMORY LEAK problem. Kitkat is still more stable than L right now...

**Oftopic** why would you pay $100 to unlock the bootloader?
Because every other Sony phone I've ever owned I always have to unlock the bootloader and I don't think it's very fair that T Mobile says that I can unlock my bootloader just because said I can't, oh and by the way when I say unlock bootloader I mean by a new motherboard, I had no idea that you can't unlock the bootloader by normal means on T Mobile's Xperia Z if I would have known this I would have never brought the T Mobile version

I have my C6603 (Xperia Z) from T-mobile. I had locked bootloader (Bootloader unlocked allowed : no). I asked T-mobile the SIM unlock key as my contract ended, and asked Sony Customer service here in Croatia if there is any possibility to be able to unlock the bootloader. They said to contact they offical service center in Croatia. I contacted them, and they did there magich and now i am able to unlock my bootloader (running cm12) and it didnt cost me anything
I would be not suprised if the Z4 is released before Z get 5.0 (a 5.0 already outdated)

Impossible, they said that a carrier branded xperia z bootloader is 100% fort Knox! Cannot be unlocked

I am an living proof than it is possible. also tought that it's not possible but they did it and it's 100%
Just think about it, they had to lock if, and if they lock it there has to be a way to unlock it
My my, if so you should definitely share your process here on xda because all the other devs said it's impossible. But I refuse to believe it's impossible.

I told you... I also tought that it's impossible and my last optio is to sell my xperia z and buy unlocked one... Than i made my mind and send an e-mail to Sony customer service... That didint told me **** and they said that it's immpossible and bla bla bla. Than i found Sony Cro. facebook page, asked them if they could help me. Really nice people and they said that "Agram servis" is offical mobile service center for all cariers in Croatia, and that i should talk to them.
Ok, i send them an e-mail nad asked if there is a way to unlocked my bootloader, because my phone is no longer on contract, i had the sim unlock key from my carrier. And a reply came, they told me that they can't unlock my bootloader they can only make my bootloader unlockable (Woohooo, that mean's to change "Bootloader unlock allowed: no to yes)... and that i have to send them the Device, the receipt, IMEI, and SIM unlock key. I send them the device. ANd got it back from them in 2 day and voila, Bootloader unlock allowed YES ...
Hmmmm ok thanks.but it's a bit scary sending out my phone to anywhere. And I use it everyday, i also have no receipt as I brought it from eBay..but I'll investigate and maybe give it a try.:thumbup:

You should contact offical Sony service in your country (the receipt is not that immportant)... I had to send them device beacuse by mail beacause i am from different town

....i dont have sim unlock.. how do i get that done first? ive already debranded my phone, it think its a C6603 and on KK when its really a C6606 with a C6603_10.5.1.A.0.283_Generic CE.ftf. does that help me in any way?
