Whats the reason for taking the sim card and the battery out of the phone before flashing the new rom? Read this in a PDF file

No need to remove them, you can flash without removing them undoubtedly..
Of course, I am not a developer, so don't know the reason..

Older root techniques has the unintended side effect of wiping SDCard. (I found a post about that when I was searching for a way to root my phone)
You don't need to now. It only writes to internal memory and doesn't put any risk to SD and SIM.

I did get this to work bud. I wasn't using a patched rom so it didn't root. All is good now tho

Removing SD card is safeside somewhat for noobs, but no problem with latest smartflash techniques.

Well I dont have any answers of your question coz it can be get in google. I am here to suggest you that dont open so many threads as you had so many Questions, you could post it in one thread and title goes as "few Questions".

Does it make a difference when flashing in Smartflash which file is CP or AP? I see two different reads here.

The start of the file tells SFT where to write the data,so either way should work. I use AP as bin and CP as fls because thats what it actually is supposed to be.

pls tell me this isnt a brick

ok so I was running drizzy's 2.7 and i needed to repartition so i could install the jac drizzy collaborative hero
after repartitioning i tried starting up so i could connect to my pc and put the update on my sd card. it goes to the g1 screen and then goes to a completely black screen and stays there... no hero or android logo....i can still do recovery i think
ha sorry i miss read your question. can you even go to recovery?
def not a brick... brick = not able to access bootloader or recovery screen. If you can access those, just transfer file over via adb and just re-flash and you should be good.
i dont know what adb is so im just gotta put a ROM on the sd card via a reader and flash it???

ADB is your best friend. It will let you do things when you can't do anything on your phone (like in your case).
If you are going to mess with Hero roms (or any experimental roms for that matter) you really need to learn at least the basics of it. Read up on it and start using it. It's a lot better then trying to put in 10 lines of code on phone's keyboard.
Good luck
i used an sd card reader to put the file on my sd card and now its flashing....i cant find a thread through search about adb...got any good links???

Go into Dream Android Development forum, second sticky from the top. It has all the info you will ever need, including basic ADB comands. At this point that's all you need, you will learn more as you move along and do things over and over again.
Edit: Silly me, look at the first thread on this forum
Good luck.

Best tool for recovering deleted files from sd-card?

Hi, I'm trying to recover some old deleted files on one of my SD cards, I usually use disk internals uneraser but all the files its restoring are still corrupt and so cant be viewed (photos), is there any better tool to recover with? I tried photorec but its really confusing :S. I really need these files back, has anyone got any ideas? I would be greatly appreciative
Link to thread with what i use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=651563 no software is going to be 100% effective as can be a very hard job hence why data recovery services are very expensive.

Hey guys, thanks for all the input but so far none of these have worked, they've either only found some files, or any of the files I want are too corrupt to use, the problem is I need some of the older photos, deleted a few months ago. I need a really powerfull program..

Once I had to recover a memory stick that was corrupted and I was forced to reformat and got reazonable success with PCtools File Recovery.
On the other hand, tried using same on a friend's stick without success because she had partially reused (overwritten deleted files) the stick. It also works on sd cards inside small card readers that look like memory sticks.
There is also another application from sony called Memory Card File Rescue: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?upd_id=2159&SMB=YES
but you will have to provide some sort of sony card type id to be able to download it, but it works with sd cards also as far as I tested but is less effective.

bah, looks like I need to pick one up... I saw this and thought it might be possible...
BEFORE STARTING
1. know that there are multiple ways to flash a rom to your phone. here are a few
a. using windows, get a flashing package from one of the xda devels, and replace the RUU_signed.nbh file in that package with whatever you are trying to flash (try NFSFAN's package, it has always worked well for me for this; some carrier packages don't work), renamed the same way
b. use a 2GB or smaller micro SD card with the .nbh named VOGUIMG.NBH in root, then place the phone in bootloader mode (see #2)
c. use linux and HTCFlasher - don't know much more about this method, find it here

You can flash the nbh without an sd card, but for our android (so far) the nbh doesn't contain the system image, just the kernel and some other stuff. You have to have an sdcard to get the system image in. That's different than winmo, where the nbh has everything in it. I suppose we could go that way eventually, but it's so easy to switch things around without having to reflash with the way it is now...
For reference, the nbh is about 3 MB. The system image is 50 MB or more depending on version, etc.

yeah and seeing as what happend to my phone i think it would be a bad idea to make it like that. its less ware on the phone and it is super easy to switch to a different rom
I have another question regarding a post I saw in another thread. It said I can only flash with a 2GB card. So if I get a card, it has to be 2GB or smaller? Or can I get a 4GB and flash using the A) or C) method and use the 4GB card to install?

yes you can flash from a computer and install android from any size sdcard. it requires a 2gb or less sdcard only if your flashing via sdcard

[TUT]MIMO Ext 4 Kernel on Vibrant

It seems the firmware after the models xjm1 and xjm2 are bricking phones on reverting back to US firmware. Thought it was my phone. So im getting rid of this thread.
previous post edited...sorry I read wrong......
Nope, just wanted to show off my homescreen in case anyone was wondering compatibility issues with applications that everyone is familiar with. Those were just some of the main applications I know a wide audience tend to use, so I picked them to display.
damn,.. you already answered to my stupid question.... sorry for wasting your time...anyways I've got few new questions!
After MIMO Ext 4 procedure is done...
1) What happens if you take out the external memory card after booting...
2) What happans if you lose the external memory card? Is the phone considered bricked then?
3) How do I reverse the MIMO Ext 4? (get rid of MIMO Ext4)
Anyways great info!!! I might actually try JM2 installation!!

1. Since your application data is now stored and ran from the sd card, your applications will go wonky, and any applications you try to install or reopen that have been close will not open.
2. No, if you lost the sd card, you can simply format another one, or use ROM manager and the clockwork recovery to reinstall your stock rom.
3. Rom manager or reflash original firmware with ODIN. But I recommend using Clockwork recovery to reinstall a nandroid backup found in the development section here, or an update.zip. As these methods are less intrusive an will give you less problems.
yay!! now I know and I dont' have to shiver in fear bricking my phone trying MIMO Ext4 !!!!!!!!!
I appreciate your swift replies !! I'll probably try this when I get some free time !!

Yeah, I had captivate in my possession yesterday, and this exact method did not work for it. Of course it might would if I could of found the exact firmware for the captivate split into the three odin files, rather than the all in one click exe. But i've returned it since then, so I won't be able to look into that anymore.
I used a program called Universal Extractor to bust open that one-click file, but all it could extract were the non-binary files inside, about 300kb of .xml, .txt and script files, in the META-INF and system directory.
I don't get it.... Why is this a goid thing to move all of your data to your sd... ?
Have you figured out why you don't have data service?
This is good write up. There are some captivate owners looking to do the same. But we don't have the firmware package u have on the vibrant. I am sure someone will come up with it. However, No DATA is a problem. I need data service. I tether alot. I pretty much depend on it.

Its due to the I/O of the internal memory. IIIRC the internal is limited to sequential read/writes, but I guess the external isn't (and neither is nand).
Thanks for this .

[Q] Droid 3 Internal SD Card to External SD Card swap

Anybody know how to do this? I found a solution for other devices, but not Droid 3. I need this pretty bad because my internal memory is getting full (11gb) and it doesn't save anything but media crap on external sd card (32gb) I need to save apps in ext card too..
Anybody interested?

Connect the device to the computer, transfer files to the external SD card (leave the folders alone). Done.
Or you can use Root Explorer and transfer the files...

Thanks for the reply, but I thibk you misunderstood me.
What I meant was that I would like to switch my External SD Card to Internal.
Since the phone saves everything (like apps) in the internal memory (except media files)
I want to use my full 32 gb sd card as internal mem instead.
I hope I explained clearer this time
You have to edit the mounting points in /system/etc/vold.fstab
I've done this on previous devices, but haven't done it on my D3, so I don't know if it will break anything, so do a nandroid before changing anything.
Do you happen to know how? Thanks.
Sorry. I want to keep this alive.
Check out this post from the CM9 thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21032236 . I am not sure if it can be used exactly as is for a Gingerbread setup, but it should at least give you a good starting point for what you need to edit in order to make it work for you. I know this was already mentioned, but MAKE SURE you have a nandroid backup and to be really safe make sure your phone is charged more than 50% in case you wind up having to do an SBF. If you were not aware, you can't program this phone when the battery is below 50% and it won't charge unless it can boot, so you can see the problem you will encounter if you brick your phone with a low battery.

He is trying to permanently swap the internal and external SD cards so that his 32Gb external is used as the primary storage and to accomplish this he will have to edit a few files in system. The link I provided earlier should get him the info he needs to do this.
