WiFi and LTE/3G always on simultaneously?

Wondering if anyone knows what's up here?
On my D1 I either had WiFi OR 3G symbol in the notification vary. But since getting the Bionic I ALWAYS have WiFi and either 4G-LTE or 3G also. Is this normal? And if so, is it just a wonky indication or is it really accurate? I guess it doesn't really matter except in terms of battery usage, which seems fine. Of course if I turn WiFi off I then only have the LTE-4G/3G symbol.
This is all true regardless of whether I am in CDMA/LTE or CDMA Only.
Any/all guidance is appreciated.

Yeah I noticed the same thing. LTE is on all the time with wifi, the is no handover whatsoever. It is killing the battery by cell standby. There is no way to change this in any of the settings except turning data completely off.

Actually I think you two are mis understanding the icons. If you read the manual, the one that turns BLUE is the active data connection. Some things (like the Verizon app) can only go over the verizon network. Additionally, you will ALWAYS have power to the cell radio (how else do you recieve an incomming call or a SMS?)
That is why LTE takes up so much batter across devices.
One of the best battery saving options (in my opinion) is to only use cmda unless you need the LTE - you can change that under mobile network options.
I am willing to bet people wanted to know IF they had cell reception in an area with out having to disconnect from wifi to see a graphical representation.

This sounds about right. I had previously glossed over this because of being so used only seeing WiFi or Cell data. Makes sense now, thank you.

That's actually incorrect. There's a good amount of talk going around that the data radios (both 3G and 4G) aren't being turned off when switching to wifi, and causing even more battery drain. In GingerBread, the icons turning a different color (blue on Blur, green on basically everything else) doesn't mean it's got an active data connection, it means it's got an active connection to the Google services (for sync, etc). Every other phone shuts of the radios when connected to wifi, including the Charge, Thunderbolt and Revolution. And while you're connected to wifi, everything non-data related (text messages, calls, voicemail) is done over 1X, which is just the signal bars.

Interesting, so which radio keeps the 1x connection alive? how does it work when i am NOT on wifi and can browse the web and email while on a phone call? (Couldnt do that on my incredible)
And while comparing battery stats, cell stand by has a larger percentage on my T-bolt then it does on my Bionic (I checked them this morning, both were unplugged from the chargers when i went to bed)

They're separate radios, the 1X radio doesn't use nearly as much power so it can stay on all the time.

Are you implying the Bionic has 3 antenna? 1x - CDMA - LTE as all seperate antenna?
THe FCC filing shows only two. One that is a combined CDMA/LTE and one that is a combine WIFI and Blue tooth.

And your previous mention of the icon color changing when they connect to Google services sort of affirms that it is the data connection (since I imagine they have to use the data connection to connect to google)

Interesting test. Wifi is connected, turned off mobile data under data settings and the 3g icon that looked to be connected disappeared... but I still had a data connection.
Is there an app that will allow you to write the logic- if wifi is on, turn off mobile data, and reset when wifi is turned off?

I'm getting really bad battery life. Right now I am connected to wifi. I have 3 icons....wifi, 4g LTE, and signal bars. All are blue except the up/down arrows under 4G. What does this indicate?

There seems to be a bug where the phone doesn't shut off the radio when turning on WiFi, I've reported it to motorola.

Tasker is a great app that should let you do that
It is paid though, but I don't mind paid apps if they are good (no different than donating to the devs here in my opinion)

Disable 4g for good? Possible at all?

Hi folks
Today I got my i9305 (swapped for i9300).
I'm not interested at all in 4G, it's the 2GB ram i was craving for. Anyways, is it possible to disable 4g completely?
I read 3G and 4G both use the same chip/antenna and therefore disabling 4g is not possible without killing 3g too. Is that true? Would be a bit of a bummer but in the end I stick to edge anyways and fire 3g/4g only up when really needed and disable it asap.
Also, I read the new 3g/4g chip is more energy hungry than the 3g-only chip, even if only 3g networks are selected.
Can someone elaborate on this?

I dont think there is a big difference in battery performance

You can choose WCDMA only on the mobile network options and 4G will be off. I'm not sure if 2G will be off too, though.

Perseus Kernel has some lte energy tweaks.

You are dead wrong.
LTE is power hungry, the i9305 has the same battery as the i9300, you will notice a battery drop.
@OP, I saw somewhere the "trick" to get 4g on the nexus 4, maybe you can try that and see if it works to disable 4g? search it up, it's a code in the dialer.

WCDMA is 3G only. GSM is 2G. The S3 is really missing a setting for WCDMA/GSM only.. this would effectively block 4G and only allow 2G, 3G, HSDPA and HSUPA. I don't need 4G, even for normal browsing HSDPA is pretty fast. Would love the WCDMA/GSM option!

cool, thanks for the hint. But I wonder, does this disable the 4G modem? I think what it does is tell the phone to ignore 4g signals in favor of 3g, but the 4g module is still on (and thus consuming power).
If the 3g and 4g modems are actually on the same chip, we're phucked :silly: I believe this is the case, but I still need someone to confirm this...

Same scenario for 2G/3G. If your phone is on 3G it will not be using 2G at the same time. Unless you are actually on 4G your 4G is NOT active. I can easily see this as I have both the 9300 and 9305 on which I get very similar battery performance (rom dependant of course). If 4G was active then this would not be the case.

Alright, thanks for your input. I'll take your word for it I just got i9305 yesterday (switched from i9300). I have yet to evaluate the battery behaviour. The WCDMA/GSM Auto option you linked to sure is a must have!

I have Korean Galaxy S3 with 2GB RAM.......from the dial pad i can enter a code and go to hidden settings menu....there i can select gsm/wcdma/lte only options.......... as I don't have a LTE connection but my operator and phone supports it.....in the beginning i got network error messages....although the network connection was always stable and i wasn't disconnected......
so what i guessed from this was that LTE modem was on and even i was connected to 3g it searched for lte and then got rejected by operator and gave error...
so i went to hidden menu and selected "WCDMA only" and now i don't get that error and always connected on 3g.....
from this i conclude that it has stopped searching for LTE connection but is the modem actually turned off.....i don't know...
maybe you can make some sense of this....

Just use a 3G sim.
I've got the LTE, and am using my previous 3G sim on a 3G plan.

You can switch off LTE by installing and app called "Phone Info" from the Play Store.
And under device info set network selection to "WCDMA Preferred". This is essentially the WCDMA/GSM option you're looking for.
I did that and my battery life is much better.

Yip PhoneInfo works well. You can use WCDMA preferred (this will prefer 3G/HSDPA over 2G) or GSM/CDMA PRL auto (this will go with the stronger signal)

Do you have a 4G sim/contract as I can only see this being of benefit if you can actually use 4G or if your network supports it and it tries to connect via 4G before realising your contract does not support 4G. Otherwise it will not use 4G anyway. As I mentioned above I can easily see this as I have both the 9300 and 9305.
I do not have time at the moment but will try next week and see if it actually makes any difference to battery life. Would be nice if it does!

Yeah, I have LTE provisioned on my contract, there's nothing special about the sim though. To be honest I have no idea if the phone will try to attach on LTE and then just fail in the case that you don't have LTE provisioned and as a result use more battery?

Guess only some good old tests will tell us but as I do not really notice any difference in battery life between the 9300 and 9305 (I do not have an LTE contract) I am not holding my breath though but hope to be pleasantly surprised!

This will information not be of much use but anyways:
I was abroad for 4 days and thus had mobile data connection turned off, only using regular cell phone connectivitgy for calls/sms and wifi in between.
The battery life was downright amazing, never managed to get it below 50% for an entire day, even when taking pictures, using wifi + whatsapp and doing calls all the time. I even did play games in between.
No surprise, but still, when mobile data is off and you rely solely on wifi, bettry life is outstanding :good:

Well having tested for over a full day now, I can safely say I see NO difference at all in having 4G disabled if you are not actually on 4G.

i dont think he is wrong at all..
I have Owned a I9300 And I have had the EXACT same battery expereince. So why is he wrong?
Your not ON LTE 24/7 it automatically picks up LTE when needed and Only if you are using the internet. I use the internet the same as the I9300 and I still had to charge my phone every night just like the I9305. I have all widgets that need Network connection and I Always have it set on auto 4g/3g/2g . 100% there is no difference at all. If I use powersaving mode and use my phone on occassion i can have it last almost 2 full days even with LTE set this is with stock kernel. And this is the same i had with the I9300 on stock rom.
But i always use the phone OC at 1700 No undervolt Always have lte on auto. And I using perseus Kenerl and i charge my phone before i sleep. Which is what i did with the I9300 when i had it OC
All this talk about dramatic battery drain.. I dont see it

So is there a problem with battery drain or not ?

How to disable HSPA / HSDPA for better battery life

I was wondering if we can turn off hsdpa to save battery life, i used to have a Captivate and we used this secret menú to disable hsdpa, leaving only the 3G which consume less battery than Hdspa and is faster than 2G, but i can not find this menú on my nexus 4, someone knows how to do it?

One way to get longer battery life is to disable HSPA and just use 3G. 3G (UMTS) is not as slow as EDGE/GPRS but doesn't use as much power as HSPA.
Here's a quick comparison of *typical* download speeds:
GPRS: 48 kbit/s, EDGE: 150-200 kbit/s, 3G: 384 kbit/s, HSDPA: 1000 kbit/s
After some searching, I've found a method that actually works for our Galaxy S:
Go to the phone dialer pad and enter this code: *#301279#
Click [2] CHANGE HSPA REVISION
Click [1] RELEASE 99 (HSPA OFF)
Then you should see something like:
CHANGE_R99
HSDPA OFF, HSUPA OFF
Done!
Press the BACK button to exit, or press MENU button then END.
The setting should take effect shortly after you exit the menu. To be sure that the setting take effect, toggle Flight/Airplane mode.
You could store that number in your phone book or speed dial for a quick way to toggle HSPA.
The setting STAYS ACROSS REBOOTS!
If you want to enable HSPA again just go back to the same menu and choose [3] RELEASE 6 (HSDPA/HSUPA).
Just tested it with the XXJPP radio and it really works.
Longer battery life at last!

Quick way is Settings-More-Mobile Networks- Use Only 2g.
Better way is to install a toggle control app that let's you do it in one touch.

Thx, But 2G Its too slow, with this method the Hsdpa is off but the 3G still working so Its faster, but Looks like lg doesnt have this option or i can not find it.... Jet

Yeah the main way is to check "use 2g only" which would give you edge only and may save battery but yes it is very slow.
There is also a toggle 2g app which makes it more convenient, or you can use tasker.
Based on what I've read on the forums I'm pretty sure HSPA is 3g. In which case theres no in between.. if you go through the dialer menu you can choose wcdma/gsm which is 3g/2g. We're used to thinking hspa is 4g but its actually 3g since true 4g is actually LTE. Confusing, I know.

I speak mainly for the AT&T network because I spent a lot a time with this on my HTC Inspire. AT&T invested a bit of money enhancing their backhaul to accommodate HSPA. I lived in a marginal area where my Inspire was typically on 3G but, by design of the device, was constantly searching and switching to HSPA and back and forth. This constantly drained my battery and caused dropped calls because it was switching towers when doing this. I ended up having to place a microcell in my home to alleviate this, since there was no way to do it thru the device. I'm not sure how my N4 would act today because I still use that microcell.

The OP was asking how to turn off HSPA. In the context of this phone, that's 3G. The next step down is Edge.

HSDPA has no more battery drain than 3G...

3G is not HSDPA, is UMTS. HSDPA is 3G+.

True that. Considering this is considered a developers phone that is unlocked and unbranded, I'm a bit surprised at the limited band selection.

It's a 5 band GSM phone, what more would you want? Other than LTE, obviously, we've done THAT discussion to death

I was referring to the ability to select the bands. When I go into the hidden test menu and try to select a radio band, I get a message that states "Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped". And yes I know this was done intentionally to hide the LTE band. My point was that I consider that somewhat odd. That is all. With previous phones I found the ability to switch bands useful for signal tests in my area, even though I couldn't always make them stick.

THANK YOU. I can finally enjoy fast (Fast enough for my needs) internet without the blackhole drain of HSPA+. 3g, UMTS, does not drain as much as HSPA+.

It's probably an NV Item in the Qualcomm radio. You would just need to find what value it needs, put the N4 into "modem" mode, and use NV Item editor or similar to change the value.

How to enable HSPA 3G on t-mobile and ptel?

I want to select network and choose 3G for tmobile/ptel. It works great on my defy.
I am out on the edge of town where 2g and 4g reception are weak but 3g is great. Sadly the phone always either chooses 2g or 4g and is having problems getting a signal out here.
I know for a fact I have tmo/ptel 3g here. My moto defy is on it right now.
I downloaded network setting app and i do not see how to change the settings.
How can I get this Atrix HD to force 3G on t-mobile/ptel?
Do I need to root?

I use this app called Phone Info that has been removed from Google Play (it was actually only renamed, it can still be found at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=myc.phone.PhoneInfo with a title in Chinese). I get 3G when I select WCDMA only.

Tmobile's "3G" and "4G" are the same, or are you referring to LTE? Look in your About Phone, what type of data connection does it say you're getting while idle and using data?

Depending what ROM you have many of the ROMs you can enable toggles for the desire network

[Q] 4G or LTE with Straight Talk AT&T?

After weeks of playing around with build.props, APNs, and patches, on custom ROMs and stock, I am still attempting to get faster and more consistent data.
4G and LTE are supposed to be possible, but I can't figure it out.
I can get around 5 Mbps down using WCDMA only, but the very next moment in the same spot could be something entirely different.
My mobile data goes out quite often where it is just the outline of a triangle. I have never seen any other letters besides an E and a H.
I am currently on stable CM 10.2.1 installed on a newly created and wiped SS Slot 1, and have been for about a week and a half.
I used default network = 0 in build.prop this time around.
I finally managed to get my phone to recognize my SIM card while using the following configuration:
default network in Phone Testing = LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) and
preferred network mode in Mobile Network Settings = Global (CDMA/EVDO/LTE/GSM/WCDMA).
It acted really strange at first but the settings stayed even after a handful of reboots.
I am using Straight Talk's current APN settings (tfdata).
My dBm is constantly going from about -90 something to -108 and my asu ranges from around 3 to 14.
Before I just now rebooted, and every so often, it shows 2147483647 dBm and 255 asu; I have only just noticed this in the past few days, however. It is now back to -101 dBm and 6 asu after restarting.
I have attached screenshots of it doing that and a shot of "normalcy", as well as my last few speed tests.
Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong?
Should I try default network = 10 again in build.prop?
Or could anyone provide a copy of a build.prop working on all possible network modes (with the ability to edit APNs)?

I have attached a couple of graphs of my signal highs/lows etc. These results are from the Real Signal app.
I don't really know what they mean, but I am hoping they might shed some light on my issue and I'll get an answer from someone.

How are you getting it to get edge data? On mine I either have HSPA or nothing. Is there a way to make it default automatically to edge when the HSPA signal gets weak. I tried using liquid smooth 4.2.2 and changed it to 2g only and never could get signal. Change it to auto and get HSPA again

Not really sure how, and when it is on Edge, data hardly works anyway, so I probably can't help you there.
But I do have default network = 10. Only other thing I changed was telephony.lteOnCdmaDevice=0 to get the APN menu under mobile networks.
However, at the moment (and the majority of moments), with Wi-fi off, I have no data, -109 dBm, 5 asu, GPRS service is disconnected, and my phone number is "unknown", so I am definitely not in the position for giving suggestions.
Am going to try CM 11 again today, but I was hoping for some answers before doing anything other than installing..
I will ask more specific questions in the hopes that someone, anyone, can provide some sort of idea for at least 1 of them..
Is it even possible for the Bionic to have consistent, non-frustrating access to 2G, 3G, 4G, and LTE when unlocked for the AT&T or T-Mobile networks using Straight Talk?
Is there a way to enable the APN menu without changing the build.prop?
Does anyone have a targa build.prop (entire thing or line changes) of phone that has reliable data, etc. working on 2G, 3G, 4G, and LTE?
Could it be an issue with the SIM card itself?
Am I even approaching this from the right angle?
Should I just give up and get a new phone?

Patch Idea
I am a novice at best and that may be a stretch.
BUT. Both of my Bionics are running on Straight Talk AT&T 4G sim cards.
One is a hardware REV-B the other is hardware REV-C.
The REV-C is rooted and running on the Jelly Bean stock rom.
The REV-B is rooted and running on a MoKee MK4.4 KitKat Release that I downloaded
from their site and opened in "Safestrap".
I do not think that I have achieved 4G yet however,
I do have fairly stable signal and data since
I installed a CDMA to GSM patch that I found searching these forums.
It includes Straight Talk and AT&T APN!
I am not aloud to post links yet. But if you search for these things here you will probably find them fairly quickly.
I would love to know if you can achieve 4G!
