I'm using 2003 version now. when battery ran out, programs in my sx66 got lost.
it is said in 05 , programs don't lose even when battery is out.
is it true?
yes it is true, and is the main reason why i use wm5.
Basically in wm2003 your programs and data etc are stored on a 'ram drive' meaning that a partition is created in the ram memory on your device (which clears when the device loses power) - this is known as volatile memory.
You may also have noticed that you have a folder called 'storage' that keeps the data stored in it even when the power goes out. This is because the 'storage' folder is stored on a seperate flash chip, a type of NON-volatile memory, similar to the kind used in usb flash drive and SD cards etc.
Basically windows mobile 2005 does things differently to 2003, instead of using the Ram as both program and storage memory, and the 'storage' chip as a serperate thing it uses the whole 128mb of ram for program memory and the internal 'storage' flash chip for storage memory.
There are various (dis)advantages to this:
1) Your device will perform faster in some memory hungry situations as there is more ram avaliable to the programs
2) The storage memory (inc instaled programs and settings) will not be lost on a hard reset (or power failure)
3) you are stuck with the amount of storage space on the flash disk (no more resizing the storage memory for a few minutes to take a large file)
4) the storage memory will be slightly slower than it was in wm2003, although it is still faster than an sd card and this is negligble.
Basically if your not worried about large files and slightly slower file copy times and you want your data to be there after a hard reset or power loss then this is the way forwards, however you must also take into consideration the many other problems and advantages of WM5 first and weigh out if it will be worth it for you personally.
Hope this helps
(wow, longest post ever...)
People have been reporting problems with corruption and losing files on memory cards, particularly 2GB ones.
I am having the same problem with a PQI 2GB bought from Fry's(PLU# 5044075 and P/N: AE62-2030R01F4) in Houston, TX.
When I try to download something from an FTP Client to the storage card, it fails and when I leave stuff on it, it becomes corrupt and stuff disappears. Also, when transferring files over FTP, it moves at about 5-8 KBps.
I took my roommate's 64MB PQI from his Sidekick III and it worked like a charm. It was as follows.
1 Head
1 Cylinder
Type: FAT12
Sector: 512 Bytes
Cluster Size: 16 KB
BackupFAT: Yes
I used Pocket Mechanic(amazing interface) and Resco which is great and clean as well! Thank you for the recommendation. I scanned my card for bad sectors and they were all good.
This morning I used my co-workers SanDisk 1GB card and downloaded files from my FTP at 22KBps over EDGE which blew my mind. Furthermore, they weren't corrupted. His file system was FAT32.
My conclusion is that it isn't the formatting options, but the PQI cards and the old motto of "You get what you pay for". I am going to have to break down and buy another card which I really didn't want to do, but it's obvious that SanDisk clearly holds it's weight in these devices.
Thanks to everyone who made recommendations and turned me on to some great apps in the process. I'll update this when I get my new card and let you guys know how it went. Thanks again for being a great community!
EDIT: Could people without problems with a 2GB Post the following info to help those trying to buy a card?

Flash memory doesn't have heads or cylinders
I know, but the stat was there so I included it in case someone got a different value reported back to them...

Correct, but there may still be logical heads and cylinders for backwords compatibility with some OSes or software.
I dont know about the case with SD cards, but CF cards can be directly connected to an IDE bus and emulate an HD.
in memory there used to be a toggle to adjust storage and program memory, my storage is almost 4MB i cannot install anything, although program memory is 53 MB
kindly any help will be appreciated
You cannot do that any more. It's a relic of when the storage space and the RAM were shared. The biggest problem was that if the phone lost power, you'd lose everything.
There is a RAM disk in many ROMs that essentially performs the same function. In WM5, the area once known as "Storage" in WM2003 is now the main file system. The rest is RAM, and 128 meg is a lot for this phone, so with a RAM disk some of it can be used to install programs. Like WM2003 however, this area is lost should you lose power completely.
So first off I have a very peculiar problem with my memory card.
If the card is plugged into the tytn ii my computer (Vista SP1) takes FOREVER to transfer files to it if I drag and drop files.
If I sync files using WMP11 it works like a charm.
If I plug the card into my computer directly it works like a charm.
To give you an idea: using drag and drop transferring a 150 MB file litterally took 5-6 hours.
Using WMP or dragging and dropping while plugging the card directly in to the computer it took a minute or two.
Also draging and dropping to the phones internal memory still works just peachy.
This behaviour started suddenly but I can't really say if I did anything in particular.
The second problem is using exFAT on my memory card. I thought WM6Pro was supposed to support this filesystem but if I format my memory card in exFAT the phone simply can't see that there's a card there.
Is there a simple patch to install for support (ie a CAB) or is there a cooked ROM with support? (Or perhaps it's just a registry tweak?)
Third is a question regarding what file system (FAT12, 16, 32 or exFAT if possible as per above) to use and what allocation unit size is preferably for a mobile device like this. I'm not worried about losing space due to too large allocation units sizes but I do want to get the maximum performance possible.

Thanks for the heads up on this, made me go with a larger cluster size than I originally intended.
Still no idea about exFAT or my problem though.
Hello all.
I have a problem when copying some files to the Diamond. I have it plugged in as a USB Drive.
I am trying to copy the files for Android to the phone, i first tried copying the whole folder over (i know i have enough space), but it came up with "Cannot copy data: The Parameter is Incorrect" error.
i have since been able to copy over other files, and some of the Android files, but it wont copy the 32mb main files.
anyone got any idea? Google hasn't helped this time...
Cheers!
I've seen this error as well. I unplugged the phone from the usb, plugged it in again, selected "active sync" connection, waited for windows to say active sync was connected, unplugged the usb to disconnect and finally connected again in disk drive mode. The transfer worked.
My active sync version is 4.5 and it only seems to happen with large files i.e 600 MB
Hope that helps!

cheers will give it a go.
file is only 32mb, seems strange.
i've heard that it can be due to the formatting, as FAT only supports up to 4GB or something, but the file is much smaller than that!
-update: tried your idea, and is still not working
well, sort of solved the problem lol
put the files into a ZIP then copied the zip file accross, then unzipped it.
Just happened to me again!
The phone was attatched in disk drive mode, 'my computer' properties showed 380 MB free space. I tried to add a 330MB file and got 'parameter incorrect' error. Deleted a 1GB folder and with so much free space, the 300 MB file transferred without a problem. Be interesting to see exactly how full the 4GB storage can be before the error occurs.
Update:
'my computer' properties /removable drive free space =740 MB
phone/settings/memory/storage card free space = 676 MB
That's why it gave me an error this time
i've encountered this problem some days ago.
i even thought that there is something wrong or some bad segments with my diamond's internal flash storage.
then i formatted the whole internal storage with A NEW USB CABLE which came along with my Canon PowerShot DC...
well, with this new usb cable, no matter how big the file is, such as 1kb or 1.4gb, i can copy them to internal storage without any problem.
just FYI...
sorry for my english 'cause English is not my native language.
Hi Jackyking!!
Your English is fine! I'd be interested to know if you can completely fill your 4GB storage. Let me know how you get on

When i formatted my diamond's flash storage, in case of new problems, i filled the whole 4GB storage with variety stuffs, such as mp3/avi/cab/rar files, at last the whole available storage is filled, well, it takes times
then, when i try to copy another 4MB mp3 file to it, i got a "no more free space" message from windows, then i tried the same with a 3.9MB mp3 file, it was done without any problem. after this, i thought it's OK for my diamond's flash storage.
sounds like formatting could make a difference.... some questions :-
would windows report bad sectors (if there were any) after formatting flash memory?
Do you think defragging flash memory makes a difference?
Could fragmentation cause "skips" when playing audio/video files?

1. no bad sectors reported by windows.
2. maybe, it is easy to backup all 4gb data and format the storage then restore the data, you will see the difference.
3. that won't happen. the "skips" or "short pause" of playing mp3 on diamond is another issue.
you can search the forum. that may be a driver or hardware problem.
Thanks for replying I won't say anymore until I try formatting the 4gb ! While I'm here, hasn't the Diamond got a bloody wonderful screen !!
By the way ,what is your native language or 'mother tongue' ?

你好。
Can your browser display the characters above correctly ?
it is HELLO in English.
it's CHINESE. i'm in mainland China.
same problem
I connected my Diamond to my PC as Hardisk (no Active Sync installed on this PC). I copy and pasted a few MP3 songs (several at one time; i.e. all CD). It worked for two CDs and now I get this error message "parameter incorrect". I only use 400 MB from the 4GB of the internal memory of the HTC.
Do I have to copy one song at a time???
