I created this thread as a way to thank our VETS who are, or have served in a war. (any war). Please show your gratitude here. VETS are also welcome to introduce themselves, and share their stories. ALL military persons are welcome here! Share your stories and have fun. Hooo-Rahh!!
Rules: There is only one rule...Be Respectful. Do not engage in political views, personal debates, or share your opinions about the war, or what our VETS are doing, or have done. This thread is strictly for VETS to introduce themselves, share their stories, and for civilians to show their support and gratitude for their sacrifice and dedication for our country. This rule will be strictly enforced, so please be mindful of this when posting. Thank You.
I'll start...
While I'm not a VET myself, I volunteer for the US Department of Veteran's Affairs as an activities coordinator, where I create activities and companionship for WWII, Korean, Vietnam, and Desert Storm VETS. Most of them are elderly, and facing mortality, suffering from moderate to severe depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Most of them are lonely, so I create activities that cater to their specific wants and needs, which in turn stimulates happiness, and an improved quality of life in their latter years. My wife also works there as a Medical Support Assistant, where she works in the urgent care dept. assisting VETS by addressing health issues, and providing them with the care they so desperately need. We both are very proud of what we do, because it's our way of giving back to those who have lost so much...

UPDATE: I have decided to alao make this thread a resource center. I will regularly add info such as resources, hotlines, outreach, and anything the VETS need. All feedback is welcome, and I will gladly add anything you all feel should be here.

Former Marine SGT. servedmy tour of duty as a reservist dployed to Iraq in 2007-2008. all in all it was an awesome experience. Deployed with some very amazing people. Everyone i left with came home happy and healthy. I understand some others are not as lucky and my heart goes out to them and thier families.
One thing i have never asked for and never will ask for is a thank you. But to anyone feeling as if they need to do so, i will tell you it was a pleasure and if things in my life hadnt changed significantly for me after my return home I would still be humbly serving our nation.
Semper Fi
Yeah its a Marine thing but its also a life thing.
Also another note. I was a weather observer a profession which is now phased out. Now they only have weather forcasters and I was an air wing Marine on Al Asad air base. So my experiences may vary greatly from the larger group of my brothers and sisters who also served.

First, OP thx for this thread....as a Marine who served 20+ yrs on active duty. Always finding a fellow jarhead in these XDA threads is Good to Go! Been retired now for 5 yrs...
Keep in mind, in today's military it is a purple world. Meaning joint services and even with the UN peace keepers.
I have had the Honor of serving and spilling the same blood with almost all branches of the Military.
Semper Fi and my deepest respect to all who have and still wearing the uniform. Those individuals know what it takes...
I get asked would I go back to active duty if the USMC asked....in a heart beat, without hesitation.
Thx again Danny for your support to us Veterans and as always Good to Go!

Well I wanna talk about the stupidity of American "football".
You see, most of the time, American "football" is being thrown and then held with the hand, and only perhaps 3% of the time it is being kicked.
On top of that the "ball" is not round. Ask any child to draw a ball and the poor child will be hard pressed (or an American idiot) to draw something that resembles that egg.
Thirdly, there is that issue of machismo that the Americans like to push. Yeah, you run around bashing people in a full contact sport. Ever heard of rugby? Those guys only wear groin protectors and tooth protectors. Not a padding more.
Suck it, American "Football"!
/This does not, in any way, bash Americans, only their version of football
//The rest of the world would like the word football back.
///Call it Handegg if you want to, otherwise you are just as asinine with your language as the Brits, who like to add an "o" in colour. (Yes, I'm Brit Eng educated. Blame the basterds who conquered us)

The game of football is any of several similar team sports, of similar origins which involve, to varying degrees, kicking a ball with the foot in an attempt to score a goal. The most popular of these sports worldwide is association football, more commonly known as just "football" or "soccer". Unqualified, the word football applies to whichever form of football is the most popular in the regional context in which the word appears, including American football, Australian rules football, Canadian football, Gaelic football, rugby league, rugby union and other related games. These variations are known as "codes."

This is an open discussion for drummers, about drummers, and drums/percussion in general. Please follow forum rules, and let's talk drums!
A tad bit about myself:
I'm 35 years old and I have been playing drums since I was 7 years old. My parents noticed that I was taking an interest in music, and my dad was always interested in the drums since he was a boy.
I took to it fairly quickly, and since MTV was brand new at the time, I finally got to SEE drummers playing.
My first real drumming idol was Tommy Lee from Motley Crue. I evolved into the kind of youngster that looked at every style of drumming, just in case.
But it was Rock/Metal that always got my adrenaline going. So at age 11, I joined my first band. We covered Kiss songs. Pretty basic stuff, but I loved Kiss for how over the top they seemed when I was a kid. Thinking back, it really helped me with my timing. Solid and minimal is always a good starting point. Flair can come later.
So I made kind of a career out of it. I never stopped playing, even into adulthood. I tried to always be a student of the instrument, though I was self-taught.
I stayed the course, played in some really cool bands, and I got to do things that not many people get to do. I wasn't famous, but I've had a few close calls. I developed a love for the lifestyle of playing rock n roll music for a living, yet somehow I managed to meet a wonderful woman, marry her, stay married for 10 years now. She also birthed my two amazingly beautiful daughters.
Being a drummer isn't the best business decision one could make, but I play drums because I love rhythm, I love the conditioning, I love the brainwork, I love how drums look, and I hope I can play til the day I die.
Lastly, my equipment preferences are as follows:
DW drums and hardware. Sabian Cymbals, Rock n Soc furniture, and any wood tip drumstick longer than 16". If you know what I mean .
So anyway...I really hope there are enough drummers here to make use of this topic. I am very difficult to offend, so I'm not going to be a stickler for content. Anything goes, as long as you follow the rules of XDA.
Thanks for giving your time to reading this.
Here's a dirty shot of my kit. Oops, no cymbals in these.
18x26 kick, 9x13 rack Tom, 13x16 and 16x18 floor Tom, Pork Pie 6.5x14 Big Black snare, 10x14 1976 Pearl marching snare.

I'm 42 and started playing at the age of 10. Parents signed me up with the Royal Comumbians Drum and Bugle Corps back in the early 80's. There were 65 of us, and we were a force to be reckoned with. We competed nationally, and were state and national champions 12 times over. Those of you familiar with drum corp training, know how incredibly precise it is. Stick height, posture, timing, attack, and execution were all part of our training. We also marched in tons of parades as the guest of honor. Including our local parade, know as the Holyoke St. Patrick's Day Parade, which is known world wide.
We were undefeated national champions for several years. Corp of the year...We were a well oiled machine. Today, I don't play as much, with all the surgery I'm dealing with. In my day, I was unbeatable. And as you can tell by my username, Neil Peart has, and always will be my idol. Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Vinnie and Carmine Appice, Max Roach...I can go on and and on.
Below are a few pictures of our actual drum corp; I am in most of them. I've also included a youtube video of the stylenof drumming we did. Very technical and very precise. If you've seen the movie Drum Line, that's what we did.

You have my heartfelt sympathies that percussionists were the first victims of "lets replace the musician with a little black box" syndrome.
I'm not suggesting the SR18 is an adequate substitute for a live drummer, but sometimes (due to space/noise level constraints) it'll just have to do.

I believe that the programming of drum computers would fall under the category of "percussion in general," so therefore I felt it wasn't out of place to mention the glitch in my SR18.

Having also gone through the process of school bands, wanabee bands, club bands, tribute bands and generally annoying friends, family & neighbours for many years, I was 'invalided out' following an motorbike accident a few years back involving me & a mad old hag in a car, somewhat similar to Pete de Freitas without the death thing; while I've happily made it back aboard several more Fireblades since then, bashing bongos is no longer an option
Drumpads, Sequencers & Synths are about the only way I can commune with the tub-thumper lurking inside, these days... Anyway, here's something to cheer you's all up, I hope.... (staying on topic means I have to be self-deprecating to the craft ). I know you've heard them all b4...
Q. What's the difference between a drummer and a drum machine?
A. You only have to punch the information into the drum machine once.
Q. How do you tell if the stage is level?
A. The drummer is drooling from both sides of his mouth.
Q. How can you tell a drummer's at the door?
A. The knocking speeds up.
Q. What's the last thing a drummer says in a band?
A. "Hey, how about we try one of my songs?"
An Indian chief and a cavalry captain climb to the top of a tall hill and look out upon the entire Indian tribe. The captain says worriedly, "I don't like the sound of those drums." The chief says, "I know. It's not our regular drummer."
Q. What do you call a drummer that breaks up with his girlfriend?
A. Homeless.
Q. What do Ginger Baker and black coffee have in common?
A. They both suck without Cream.
Q. How many drummers does it take to change a lightbulb?
A. Five: One to screw the bulb in, and four to talk about how much better Neil Peart could've done it.
An amateur drummer died and went to heaven. He was waiting outside the pearly gates when he heard the most incredible fast and furious drumming coming from within. Immediately he recognized the playing and rushed to ask St. Peter if that was Buddy Rich playing drums inside the gates. St. Peter responded: "No, that's God. He just thinks he's Buddy Rich."
Q. What does a drummer use for contraception?
A. His personality.
Q. What do you say to a drummer in a three-piece suit?
A. "Will the defendant please rise?"
Q. "Hey buddy, how late does the band play?"
A. "Oh, about half a beat behind the drummer."
Q. How is a drum solo like a sneeze?
A. You know it's coming, but there's nothing you can do about it.
Q. What's the first thing a drummer says when he moves to LA?
A. "Would you like fries with that, sir?
Q. What is the difference between a drummer and a savings bond?
A. One will mature and make money.
Q. Why do drummers have lots of kids?
A. They're not so good at the thythm method.
Q. What did the drummer say to the band leader?
A. "Do you want me to play too fast or too slow?"
Q. What do you call someone who hangs around with musicians?
A. A drummer.
Q. What did the drummer get on his IQ test?
A. Drool.

What's the deal with probationary members? It's simple. Not official Mafia members yet, but able to post in here for the time being. They may be upgraded to members, or have their priviledge lifted any time without notice [/FONT]
Ok. It seems like some people have misunderstood the way we work, so I'll make it clear.
Why do we want members?
The Gli started as a place for a friendly and *private* chat for OT people. It wasn't made open, because we didn't want any trouble. The Gli follow the rules of this forum and that's why no trolls and spammers are tolerated. That's why a member list was needed, to protect the members from any abuse and of course help to get to know each other.
What does it take for someone to be a member? Why are you so elitists?
We are not elitists by any means. Someone, in order to get accepted as a member has to fulfill some requirements. Among others, he has to cause no trouble in the forum and also be active in the thread. Another important requirement, is to "fit" in the Gli atmosphere. We are a close group, so each one has to follow that, otherwise he has no place in here ( what's the point of having people here who can't understand what we say and we can't understand what they say? ). We are more than a team, we are a family.
Um.. and the probationary members? Why do you need that? I want to be a regular member NAO!
Probationary members didn't exist until recently. There were incidents of people joining the Gli, being active for a while and then disappearing completely without notice! That's why we made that list. Probationary members have to prove that they are part of the Gli, by staying active in the thread without causing issues for at least 3 months. Then, they will be upgraded into regular members, and get the permission to have the Gli logo on their signature, as they will be official members.
:'( I failed to become a probationary member. Now what?
If such thing happened, don't worry. That means that you didn't fulfill all the requirements. You are free to apply again after a while, and go through the procedure again. If and when the Recruit Team feels like you are ready, you will be added in the crew . When reviewing people for Gli membership, we always make sure that they fit the environment and their attitude suits the rest of the Gli, so make sure you fulfill that. If you don't, then please don't bother applying again.
Recruit Team? Who is reviewing me? I want to plant bombs on their houses!
You can see the Recruit Team members in the OP. Next to their regular Member title, they will have the RT flag.
The topic says " Don't post in here if you aren't listed in the OP". Why are you such discriminatory bastards? Ι just want to hang out!
Recently, we have been flooded with many people posting in the thread, without even introducing themselves and causing massive headache to anyone reading the thread. We had to constrain that spamming mayhem, so that topic was required. If you are genuinely interested into being a part of the Gli, you may post, but please be conservative in the amount of your posts until you receive a notice about your Gli membership
I want to post ponies. Who do I bribe to get in the Members list?
Glad you asked. Drop a PM here and we'll get back to you

Okay, so you've got a shiny new thread to play with now. You all know the reason I did this. I appreciate that you see it as "your space", but it's not - it's everyone's space. You all know well enough that it's easy to offend people, especially if they're not part of your crowd. So do show courtesy to other members by remembering the fact that strangers may wander in here, and please stick to the rules.
I don't want to be all "nasty mod" on you, but it won't be cleaned for the same reason again. I think you get my meaning.
Now play nicely everyone, and have fun

It is very good, and nerdy as hell. I watched the film, Serenity, before Firefly but I'd recommend the other way round. Awesome film - I rate it as Joss Whedon at his best.
And we're back, shiny new thread is shiny
"The reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live."
This thread is for furries, or anyone else to just post, have fun, and hang out. :3
No trolling please...
What is a furry? Well, Urban Dictionary defines it as...
There is no one single definition of what a furry is. Even within the furry fandom, people cannot always agree on just what makes a person a furry or not.
Some would argue that to be a furry, you must think and talk like one (i.e. use furry specific words and phrases). Even if you go to conventions, wear a fursuit, draw the art, writes the stories etc but don't talk using furry lingo, you're not a furry. Basically, someone that may walk the walk but doesn’t talk the talk.
Others would argue that even liking anthropomorphic creatures makes you a furry. You may have no idea the furry fandom exists or have ever heard of a furry convention, let alone any of the websites; simply liking 'anthro' critters makes you a furry.
The way I see it, if or if you don’t consider yourself a furry is a matter of personal opinion.
As with any hobby, most furries are normal people just like anyone you'll meet at work/school or going to/from work/school or anywhere. Then there is the small percent that are hard core fans and have taken what for most is a hobby and perverted it (sometimes in an all to literal sense).
As is with so many other things in life, the few that take it too far tend to be the loudest. The silent majority are often forced into silence by the loud majority for fear that people will label them as being in the same class as the minority that have perverted it.
One unfortunate side effect of the internet and the relative anonymity that some sites grant their users is people are able to engage in activities (even if only on a virtual level) that they would never even consider doing in real life. An example of this is trolls of message boards that say things to people they’d never say to them in person. I think a lot of the stereotypes associated with furries are because of this.
In conclusion, as with any hobby, there are some furries that have taken it too far and/or perverted what for many is a fun harmless hobby.
If only the silent majority were not so silent, people would realise there is more to furries then perversion.
Any questions, feel free to ask.
Reserved...
Gonna take this spot, just in case.
I'd recommend the definition from WikiFur, it's a lot more comprehensive. Give it a read: http://en.wikifur.com/wiki/What_is_Furry

It depends on your point of view. In a way, ponies are anthropomorphic animals, which some consider to be the definition of what a furry is. However, they're also different, and the furry fandom is gigantic compared to the brony fandom.
If you search it, I'm sure you'll find many people discussing the subject better than I can.
I was a furry though before I became a brony, which is why I'm here.

Alright, all right, lol.
Hmm... Let's see here... There wasn't really a specific day I could just mark on my calendar and say "this is the day I became a furry".
All I know is that Krystal from Star Fox eventually led me to the fandom. Prior to that my favourite furry character was Sonic the Hedgehog, I used to play as many games (though never finished them) as I could, watched Sonic X every Saturday morning (on Fox Box and then 4Kids TV) and read the comic as much as possible. Sadly I've fallen out of all that, though I still love the Sonic franchise. I see his latest games as more of a desperate push by Sega to try and stay alive though.
So, yeah. No specific date here. I'd say that I was between 13 and 15 when I discovered the furry fandom and decided I was a part of it.
Sorry Everyone,
But too much spamming is too much spamming. I removed the posts that I considered trolling of the thread.
Sorry especially to the OP.

If a whole community is not accepting something then better avoid it (specially the things related to religion) , there are millions of other things which can be used to laugh upon, why only the things which are hurting someone's sentiments (`someone` here is a whole community).

I'm not a religious person but I think we should learn to respect the convictions of others.
I just don't think the public mocking of revered religious figures is a good idea. Not even under the banner of free speech. I wouldn't walk up to a stranger on the streets and just insult him using free speech as a defence.
I think we all need to take a step back and do some soul searching here. It's a question of responsibility and respect for each other. Free speech yes but everything has boundaries. In some countries like Germany, people are prosecuted for denying the holocaust.
Having said that, murdering people in cold blood can never be a justifiable response to offence. Too many people are just being driven into the hands of insane fanatics constituting a very mad brigade hell bent on insanity. We shouldn't be doing things that swell the numbers of this mad brigade but unfortunately acts like deliberately ridiculing revered icons does exactly that. Free speech in my opinion isn't a good justification for this. Especially when it's just for a laugh. Not worth the trouble it causes at all and I look forward to the day when this is realised.

No sir you are not the only one. In the face of the sort of murderous carnage we saw on the streets of Paris, it's just human nature to rally behind the victims of such an atrocity.
We all as human beings have more in common than not. We just need to tolerate our subtle differences a bit more.
The men made mad who carried out the attacks are no more representative of Islam as the IRA were of catholics. They just use religion as a rallying call to recruit disillusioned and disaffected young men and women to their cause which is purely political in motive. We need to stop elevating them to the point were they're now considered a threat to our world. They do not and cannot threaten our way of life. What with kalasnikovs, RPGs and improvised explosives? Can they really pose a real threat to the west who've got armies armed to the hilt with the most advanced weaponry including a vast arsenal of nuclear weapons?
These fanatics are no more than a nuisance. A deadly irritation and we all need to confine them to their tiny little box where they belong rather than elevating them to a threat to our way of life. They're are not that and will never be that. They should be treated like the rag tag bunch of lunatics they are. By waging a war on terror against them, all we do is play right into their hands giving them the publicity they desperately crave to recruit more lost souls to their insane agenda. This needs to stop. They're murderous criminals and that's how we should see them. Vermin that need to be crushed by special forces wherever they are. Starting with Saudi Arabia!
We just need to be a bit more realistic in our thinking. Lofty ideals are great but they should always be tempered by the situation on the ground.
