[Q] Preventing AutoUpdates - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know of a good way to prevent automatic updating? I've tried editing the host file, but as I am already on the latest version of the Kindle firmware, I can't tell if that is going to work.
I found a bunch of old articles from the kindle 1 on the subject; however, they all mentioned files that don't exist on my Kindle HD.
Thanks in Advance

[Q] Need help with Kindle Fire Utility Driver

Hi, I'm trying to bring my amazon kindle to full stock and undo the root I did a few months ago. After some research I found Kindle Fire Utility Driver and the trick of downloading the stock update.zip into the root sd and using TWRP to flash it. I downloaded the KFU and tried to install the drivers using the included file. No matter how many times I uninstall the drivers for kindle, download other drivers from the original thread for KFU (which I can't post to for help because I'm a new member) I keep getting stuck on my computer saying Install failed. Or if I try to do it directly from device manager it says The hash for the file is not present in the specified catalog file. and won't let me install the driver.
I'm banging my head on my desk because every attempt I make to skim through the original thread or google trying to find others who had my problem (there's always someone) I can't fix this. I'd prefer posting this directly in the thread to get more precise help but I can't post there which is cool I guess.
I've tried different usb ports, cords, restarting, etc. I downloaded a separate zip of drivers to do from and that didn't work either. I'm assuming it's a simple issue and should be easy to fix but i can't for the life of me get these damned drivers to install.
Anyway,
I appreciate the help!

[Q] Kindle Fire HD 2013 root

hi guys, I live in Cuba and just received a kindle fire HD 2013 as a gift. Access to information about the kindle is very difficult here. could anyone please tell me if there is anyway to root the device and install android 4.2.2? What little number of posts I have managed to open tell me it's not possible yet. is this true? any help would be appreciated. thanks!
Root is possible, flashing other ROMs is not. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544736

Hi.
I've followed this method down to the letter and still no root. Any ideas?
I test it by trying to edit the hosts file to prevent auto updating to no avail. I've also tried some other root functions in ES File Explorer and they have not worked.
Also, in your opinion will flashing other ROMs be possible in the future or is it unlikely? I'm just wondering whether I should check back every so often or should I not bother?
Thanks,
K
I seriously doubt we are going to unlock the bootloader, it just doesn't seek worth it on this particular device because we have 3 or 4 other model kindles already available to flash and they technically have better features on them like HDMI and a camera, so I would think someone would be more intersected in the HDX's if anything, and who knows an exploit on them might work with the bootloader on the 2013, but no guarantees on that as the CPU and hardware is different so I'm assuming the bootloader quite different.
As to your problem with rooting, give me some feedback or a log of the terminal output so I have an idea of what happened, I don't have a 2013 model so I have never attempted its rooting process, but I can probably help with errors. Oh and for the record, on a command print you can right click in the window, hit mark, highlight as much of the text as you want, hit enter and it copies it to the clipboard so you can paste it into code brackets here. Most people don't see. To know this for some reason and just screenshot the command prompt... Seems kinda basic that any windows app has basic copy and paste functionality in it. Lemme end this post before I start ranting about how Linux has even better copy and paste support.

hi
hey, did you root your kindle? if you do , please let me know

{Q] & [A] Possibly.

Good day to all and I do apologize if this post is not in the proper forum but I am limited to where I may post.
I have what I believe is a Kindle Fire HD 2 ? I do own and have rooted and cyanogenMODed my kindle fire 1st
gen, 2nd gen and my kindle fire HD, this one I believe is the HD 2 running version 11.3.2.3.2_user_323001620.
I have been a member here for sometime and have learned a lot and I very well may have stumbled across
something a few minutes ago. From what I gather this version kindle has not yet been rooted or at least that I can
find any proof of ( my apologies if I am wrong ). I was just tinkering with it and downloaded a root app from here
named Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v35 I also downloaded and installed the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 ADB
drivers from here also and downloaded a file called pwn.zip too.... Anyway....
Under Windows 7 these are my procedures....
1. Extracted pwn.zip to the z2root folder
2. Right clicked RunMe.bat and chose run as administrator
3. Chose option 0
4. Then chose option 0 again.
5. Then connected the kindle to the USB cord
6. Hit Enter and allowed Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v35 run it's course following the onscreen instructions
and it seems as tho I am rooted.
Again, I apologize if I am posting to the wrong forum and I am also sorry I do not have all the steps for instructions...
to be honest...Im about to piss myself ... Sorry
Can anyone else try this and confirm it please?

Sorry they are not the best pics.

PS!:.. I am still having a lot of issues getting twrp recovery etc...
I need to invest in a fastboot cable, I find no way to get this KF HD to boot into FB =(
I have rooted the KF 1st gen, 2nd gen and the hd1.. this one is only giving me fits trying to get to FB and a recovery.
As soon as I get a recovery on this beast I will be playing with some CyanogenMod or Hellfire Roms.... Im sure they can be used as is.
Please Kepp me informed... Tkank You & Take~Care! Tony.
thanks alot for your reply and upload, it is very appreciated
unfortunately, i'm not having any luck with this .bat...
when i open the runme.bat as adminstrator, and run option 0... i get alot of "this path cannot be specified" msgs and nothing is applied / changed... my kindle never restarts
however, when i DON'T run option 0 as adminstrator, simply as user.... i get a little further along in the automated process, but again, nothing is effected / restarted.
i've also tried option 2 and 4, and they actually got so far as to restart the kindle, however root has not been granted.
any help is greatly appreciated!
it should be noted that i uninstalled / replaced my previous kindle drivers with the provided 8.9 drivers before any of these root trials were carried out.

Try picking option 0 then option 1 and see what that does... none of the options have done anything other than those 2.
I just done a factory reset to try to retrace my steps and make it further..I am sure 4 eyes are better that 2,
please let's stick together =)

hey there, glad to report that appears to have done the trick, however, i don't believe i ran the .bat as administrator as option 0 then 1 also give me "this path cannot be specified" etc etc errors...
anyhow, i opened the .bat once more as user, hit option 0, then 1... plugged in my kindle.... and i made it to a point in the process where i stalled / hung there for a bit, until i went into my kindle options, disabled, then re-enabled ADB interfacing.....at which point, the .bat script continued, and i rebooted.... happily, with root access / capabilities.
congrats to you for finding this man, and certainly my gratitude / thanks to you, i can now use my ps3 controller wirelessly through bluetooth.....
a question. how can i now disable auto kindle firmware updates so as to retain my root access?
oh no, while charging my kindle i seem to have updated to the latest firmware automatically, thus i no longer have access to root functions!!
currently on 11.3.2.4 user 324002520 as of now..
i've tried to root once more with the provided files but so far no luck, having tried options 0>0 and 0>1, both as administrator and user.

They have a KFHD Soho 2013 not Tate. KFFA is not for the Soho. The link in my signature can help with this. Get ahold of the dev and ask for an updated firerooter.

Rooting a Kindle Fire HD 7" version 7.5.1?

Hello, good day, I am searching for a n00b friendly way of rooting an HD 7" thats is running the system version 7.5.1.
EDIT: I managed to root it, but I am now searching for an easy way to install TWRP.
also what custom rom's would you rec?
How did you root you fire 7? Please tell me been searching for ages.
I followed the youtube video: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2551661. The files needed are in the notes below the video.
I followed with installing 2nd boot loader and TWRP.
Could one have not just restored to a 7.2.3, for example (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951254), which appears to be prerooted, then used FireFlash to flash all the necessary files?
I'm going through this process myself, as a noob. What I'm finding is that it's fun and not terribly difficult, but that a lot of the information out there is getting a bit old since 2015 or so. I'm taking notes along the way though and will try to share something to help others follow along.
Yes, there is a moutain of info to trawl through. a lot of it quite detailed, technical and not the sort of operation where you can screw up so you have to digest it all carefully.
THEN you discover that it all stopped working about 5y ago and you start again. Very frustrating and hugely time wasting.
As a last resort I installed KingRoot, but now I can't get rid of the damned thing. There's no uninstall option and if I pull the apk , su no longer works.
I'll look at the two links above . Thanks.

Help unrooting kindle fire

I have a kindle fire that used to belong to my brother and he had it rooted. I did a factory reset and upon registering the kindle it throws me into a language selection loop. I can still manage to get into apps, settings, etc.. if I click fast enough before the language selection pops up again. I'm assuming this is happening because it is rooted and I deleted files that were needed with the factory reset. I believe it's a 3rd gen kindle but I don't know how to be sure. Current version is 13.3.2.3.2_user_323001720 Build date Sunday, June 1, 2014. I prefer it to be unrooted for a fresh start but if it's easier to get past that error loop I'll take it. Can anyone help me with this please?

Sounds like you may have a 3rd gen HDX. You'll need to identify the exact model as recovery procedures differ among the various fire devices.
Bumping this to see if I can get any help on it. I have decided to try again after finding my tablet. The tablet is a Kindle Fire HDX 7 3rd gen. After researching for a while I found out my brother rooted it using SuperSU as there's an su file under system/xbin (my brother doesn't remember anything) but no SuperSU app installed due to the factory reset. I was able to solve the language selection loop error but now I'm stuck on what to do next. Some apps work some don't. I just want to be able to use newer apps/games. Would you guys recommend trying to unroot or can I update current root to something not stuck in a 2014 update?

I would suggest go to amazon and download the full update. Also there is a hdx thread that might be more relevant. I do not have one of these devices and this thread is for the fire 7. See the next post...
Thanks @DB126

Reloading FireOS (any build) is not an option on unrooted HDX device. Also rather dangerous without an understanding of compatible versions; a difficult to correct brick can easily result. Re-ask your question in the HDX help thread; someone (most likely me) will respond. You'll need to do a fair bit of work to restore that device including unlocking the bootloader and installing a custom ROM. Not for the faint of heart.
Thank you guys!
