[A] Wirelessly syncing music to external SD Card - RAZR i Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just thought I might share this, in case anyone else was running into these problems.
I was always syncing my music to my Android phone using Salling Media Sync over USB, which worked OK. For that to work, the phone memory needed to be recognized as a Mass Storage device. Obviously, this didn't work anymore with the Razr I, since it uses the MTP protocol.
Since I am on OS X, I even needed to install the Google Android MTP driver, which really caused quite a few problems, didn't solve my problem regarding Mass Storage, and really is nothing like an elegant solution.
I tried various syncing apps from the market (wireless sync was not a must, but nice to have - especially considering the fact that I needed to purchase an App in most cases for full functionality). Apps I tried were for example Winamp Pro, Doubletwist, TuneSync and a few others that I don't remember right now.
When using the wireless sync feature however, these Apps had a serious flaw (that's being discussed in the respective manufacturer forums quite extensively, without there being a solution that): to my surprise, none of them would sync to my external SD card, they all synced to the internal storage - and there was no option to specify the storage (or folder) to sync to, even though this should be a really easy thing to do for a developer.
Long story short: the App that offers exactly this functionality and works flawlessly with iTunes and its playlists is iSyncr. You can even select where to sync every single playlist, so you could even distribute your music between the internal and external storage.
As a bonus, recognizing all the playlists and songs on the phone worked flawlessly - with other solutions (like Winamp and Salling) I would always have dead duplicates of playlists and songs that didn't work, sometimes not even any of the entries would work.
So just in case anybody is struggling with the same issue: iSyncr works. Of course it's not perfect, but I think it offers everything I wanted for now.
Best regards,
Hendrik

+1 to all of the above. isyncr is a fantastic product. i also tried doubletwist but it was a major cpu hogger on my laptop :silly:

Unfortunately, I need to add one downside for me when using iSyncr with OS X: when iSyncr is running (which is all the time, if you have it set up to auto start on login), my mouse pointer hangs when I plug in USB sticks and the likes. Spent quite some time trying to figure out why that suddenly happened...
Oh well, I just removed it from auto start and will just start it when I need it. Hope this gets fixed.

i do that anyway. no need to have it running all the time....unless you are syncing everyday?

Did they break the functionality of the original post? Eg wifi synch to SD card. iSyncr used to do it (http://blog.jrtstudio.com/2011/04/multi-drive-sync-isyncr-140.html) but now the settings are gone.
EDIT: I found it. It is now under Settings -> Wifi POLICIES - Default Storage

Xperia Sync with Mac

Hi,
Just got my xperia today, but I'm still new to Windows Mobile. I want to transfer media files to my phone from my mac, is there any software that can let me do this relatively easily like by drag and drop? My mac doesn't seem to even recognize the x1. Also, I have a 8gb microsd card already inserted into the phone, but it doesn't seem to recognize the memory at all. Any help would be great, thanks.
I don't have a mac, so can't help much, but there's one thing I can think of. you might have tried it already, but...
Did you try going into Start > Settings > Connections > USB to PC and setting this to "disk drive"? I would have thought that this makes the phone act just like a USB drive, so there wouldn't be a problem as long as the Mac can see standard USB sticks.
Active Sync certainly won't work, it being Microsoft Active Sync, but maybe as a USB "Drive" it might...
Hi ... You must use Missing Sync ... you can use it via USB or bluetooth ...
Bye.
The Missing Sync seems the most popular with Mac users - apparently really good:
http://www.markspace.com/products/windowsmobile/mac/windows-mobile-sync-software.html
I just use the Disk Drive option in USBtoPC.exe ...
Hey guys, thanks for the quick responses and help so far. The disk to drive has an issue because it needs a memory card to be inserted, and mine isn't being recognized for some reason. Oddly enough, whenever I unplug it from the miniUSB, the memory card suddenly becomes available. I downloaded the Missing Sync but I may have gotten a weird version or something(4.0 something) that was talking about a patch.
Feel really stupid about this. Is there any easy way to just drag and drop music and videos onto this phone?
Sync wth Mac
Hi Guys,
I am using a WM5.0 Dopod 838 Pro but looking to change to experia soon. I used eltima syncmate to sync my Dopod to my Mac. The freeware works great and IMHO, it is more stable than Missing Sync.
Cheers

What ROM are you running?
I will check the rom version in a second, but I remember that it was dated for the 29th of August. I got the x1 to mount as a disk drive, but I was confused about where to drag my media files for the media panel to recognize the stuff in my storage card. Not only that, but dragging and dropping was incredibly slow and I was only able to get 5-6 songs on to my phone before the lag became unbearable.
hey guys thanks for the help in the missing sync. New problem now lol. I transfered my music and vids to my memory card and the media panel read it fine. But my touchFLO3d manila HD can't seem to detect any media from the card at all. Is there any way to change this?
I got my Xperia on Friday and have spent the last 2 1/2 days trying to sync it with my Mac using Missing Sync. I was using MS V4.0.3 and then after upgrading to V4.0.4 and a hard reset (I think) things stopped working. The MS activity log said it couldn't connect to the sync client on the X1 (I also couldn't sync my old Dell Axim X51v either). I tried uninstalling and re-installing multiple times but still no success. After 2 days, I binned MS thinking it was the problem and purchased Eltima's SyncMate. Again same result, couldn't connect with the sync server.
After much googling if found the following post (http://forums.markspace.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5349) in Mark Spaces forums of all places. Copied and pasted the commands into Terminal restarted and everything is fine. Good old Apple.
Hi,
Using SyncMate right now with my new X1.
I'm using the free version, so far contact syncing is ok with the only problem being certain number fields in Mac's Addressbook not showing up in the phone. But this is pretty common problem among all Mac <-> WM syncing. Just need to play around with the info fields in Mac Addressbook.
Right now the problem is the internet sharing to the phone is not working (sharing Mac's LAN connection to the phone). I know this used to work when I was using the same copy of SyncMate with a WM 5.1 Palm Tero I had borrowed. So far SyncMate doesn't seem to show the dialogue box that it discovered a internet connection and is sharing it with the phone.
Of course the Mac has working internet connection.. I'm using it now...
Any help and advice on this issue or any other Mac <-> WM tips are welcome!
As was said above, I use syncmate on my wifes. I used to use missing sync but it didn't always seem to recognise teh phone and had limited features. So I use Syncmate now. Have also tried pocketmac whcih was similar. Both softwares allow you to sync files, contacts, calander, install softwares adn will also mount the phoen as a hardisc on your mac without stopping eth phone from still being able to access it (if you put it into usb disc mode the phone no longer has access to teh memory card untill you disconnect). They can also connect wireless, usb or bluetooth.
I'd try either of the above instead of missing sync. Missing sync just didn't do the job well enough if you ask me.
As for the internet conenction issue, mine just works......have you checked teh connection settings in teh actual phone?
Hi
I tried using the free version of Syncmate with my Xperia, it doesnt recognize my phone. I am using the latest R2 ROM version. Any help ???
thanks!

can please somebody help me, i have a mac and se x1 and i cant connect on internet from my mac via x1 i tried everything over usb, bt, internet sharing, sync mate , nothing works please help.
p.s. sorry about my English
This has been posted in this forum before but here it is again … I've never successfully used my X1 as a broadband modem via USB (it has something to do with ActiveSync, I think however, I use my X1 as a modem all the time using BT).
For a BT connection:
1. Pair your X1 and Mac (using the OS X BT preference panel)
2. On the X1 start Internet Sharing - PC CONNECTION should be set to BLUETOOTH PAN and NETWORK CONNECTION to whatever your ISP requires - SELECT CONNECT down in the task bar (bottom left) - should now say CONNECTED.
3. On your Mac open the BT Preference Panel from System Preferences or the clicking on the BT status icon in the menu bar (top right of screen). Click on your Xperia device (to select it) in the left-hand side-bar. Its status should be displayed in the right-hand panel (paired - yes; connected - no). Click on the task button (the one with the cogged wheel next to the minus button, bottom left-hand corner of the BT preference panel and select CONNECT TO NETWORK - status should change to connected.
4. To disconnect - select disconnect in the task bar of Internet Sharing on the phone or disconnect from network in the Mac's BT preference panel.
The process has to be done in this order. If you don't connect to the internet with the phone first, the process fails.

Sync Xperia with mac
Hi everyone, new to the forum so bear with me. I've recently acquired the software "The Missing Sync" to be allowed to edit and fix up my phone through my mac. When I plug in my phone, the computer only recognizes it as a mass storage device and the program will not detect it. Do I need to update the firmware on the phone to up to date with the most current version of The Missing Sync? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Xbox not recognizing Kaiser

So i recently bought an xbox360. I was excited for the chance to play the music on my phones SD card on my 360. First i hooked up my sony PSP to my 360 through usb. It recognized it and i was able to open up a file manager through my 360 to acess the Mp3's. After this i hooked up my iPod and it worked the same way.
Now i decided to hook up my kaiser, the 360 didn't allow me to select it as a portable device. I was stuck. If there's a way to fix this problem i'd love a solution.
(Strange how microsoft supports a sony and apple products OS, but not a smartphone OS designed by them)
Windows Mobile phones don't appear as Mass storage, but rely on ActiveSync for communication.
You'll have to use a program like CardExport to have direct access to the card.
instead of connecting via activesync, you need to switch to use as mass storage device in the connections settings

But that's only available on a few cooked ROMs, not on stock ones, and that feature on those that have it usually doesn't work on the Kaiser... The best thing is just to search for the numerous threads about mass storage, lots of infos and hacks there to try as they will work or not depending on the combination of actual phone hardware and ROM version. But the easy, albeit payware solution is CardExport.

[Q] Winamp for Android Wifi Sync... any luck?

Hi all. Just curious if anyone has had success syncing Winamp over Wifi as it claims it can. I've tried on two phones and now the Gtab and all I ever get is FC. Plays local media well, but when I go to the "Enable Sync" is settings.... BOOM! FC.
No one?! No body has used Winamp before?
I haven't tried on the most recent version, but I was able to associate the tablet and use sync without any issues when I tried.
This was about three weeks ago, so probably five different firmwares and one Winamp revision ago.
I'll try it again tonight and see if it's still working.
winamp on windows crashes on me after only a few songs but I do get some.
Thanks. Please let me know. I use it all the time on my W7 laptop, but can't get into the setup for wireless sync on the tablet (or my Hero). I'm bummed, but if someone else has the same issues at least I know it's not just me.
It works great on my Nexus One, haven't tried the Gtablet yet. For reference my PC is running Windows 7 Professional x64.
Are you trying to use your gtab as a wireless remote to play your music on your computer, or play your music from your computer on your gtab over wifi?
If you are trying to use your gtab as a wireless remote I have a pretty cool solution that I use all the time (not with winamp though... sorry). My htpc is connected to my stereo / tv and I sue the gtab as a wireless remote for my music.

I'm on W7 x86. Not sure what the issue could be. Perhaps I didn't set it up properly on the PC side.

I simply want to sync Winamp to the GTab as the app states it can. I'll have to verify the PC setup I guess.
I had to do some tweaking, rebooting and other stuff but I was eventually able to get it to sync to my Sprint Hero and GTablet. I'm on whatever the latest Winamp is now, Win7 x64 Home Premium, and I could get my PC to see both the devices fine; just sending files was the problem. It ended up being that you have to have both the auto-mount AND sync enabled for it to actually send files. Found that on the Winamp forums.
So if you're having a problem just getting it to enable the syncing on your phone, I cannot help. Sorry.

I had been using Winamp for quite some time now. But only running a international radio with no problem.
I love the winamp app, works like a charm! Today I tried the wifi-syncing option, but it won't work on my X10i. Milestone works perfectly, but with my X10i, Winamp can't even recognize it as my X10, just a wifi android device. And it keeps telling me I don't have enough free space, even worse, it tells me 0MB (0%)/0MB... Anyone else having this problem? Couldn't find anything on the web about this problem
I got it to work fine.
Have synced both over WiFi and USB. Seems a bit slow.
One thing I wish they allowed you to do is select the destination for the synced files. I want to put my media on the external SD.
I might post something on their support forum about that.
Deleting pmp_wifi.ini from %appdata%/roaming/winamp did the trick for me when my pc couldn't discover the winamp on my android. After restarting winamp on your pc, you should be able to see and pair with your devices.
Thanks for the "enable auto-mount" trick! My winamp would get stuck after a few songs. Looks like it's going for the whole 12 gigs now.
Edit: winamp crashed again, even with automount enabled. Still searching for a solution..

[Q] Need help - WMP doesnt recognize Nook Color as device.

I have a Nook Color running CM Nightly #144. When I open windows media player with the intention of syncing my music to my Nook, it doesn't see it as an applicable device. I've tried turning debugging mode on and off, and I've tried it with USB storage both off and on.
Under Device Manager -> Portable Devices, I have F:\ (SD card) and MyNOOKcolor.
Am I doing this wrong? Am I missing a driver that lets WMP see the Nook Color as a device? Anyone have any suggestions?
If I had a way of exporting all the music from a playlist to a memory card or external harddrive that might work for me too, but I'd rather be able to sync with WMP or something like it. Will Winamp do that?
I know someone is going to suggest I just drag and drop my music. I don't want all my music on my nook, just certain playlists worth. I.E. gym playlist (Kanye West, Wu Tang Clan), roadtrip playlist (Elton John, Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble, Pink Floyd), baby making music (Barry White, Bob Marley, Enigma, and Slipknot), robbing banks music (Fun Loving Criminals, Bloodhound Gang), etc., so syncing is the better option for me.
Thanks,
Josh

I stand corrected.
If you have a card reader, you can try just popping the sd card in that and syncing, I usually get the option to sync a card or usb stick in wmp, though I'll say wmp is not always consistent in what it decides it wants to sync with.
I Digress.
I have installed Winamp which recognizes my internal Nook 1GB memory as "USB drive G:" and my mSD as "ANDROID Drive F:." It lets me sync my music playlists to either (obviously I want it on F: ), but while transferring my music it hems up. It gets about 10 or so songs copied over then my NC turns off USB storage all by itself. When I hit the button on the NC to turn it back on, Windows tells me I need to "Scan and Fix" F:. I tried a different cable (the one from my Droid X) and I tried a different USB port on my laptop, but it just keeps doing it. If I just leave the NC plugged in with USB enabled for a long period of time its fine. I even copied some 350MB movies over to it, and that went fine. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Josh

I used your suggestion. I took the mSD card out of the Nook and put it into its adapter and into my laptop and it worked. Winamp is copying the files over now. For grins I opened Windows Media Player just to see, and it also recognizes it as a syncable device. So either would have worked. Thanks for this.
I do still wish I could leave it in the Nook and sync it with WMP, or at least with Winamp, but this will work fine for me.
Thanks,
Josh

Empty Playlists

Hey all,
I have looked through this forum and others looking for an answer to my predicament. This issue seems to only be affecting me, but I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas.
First, I am using the Thrill 4G with the stock ROM.
The SD Card is a PNY 32GB HC class 10.
I keep my music on my external SD Card. I would create multiple playlists. Connect my phone to my computer (I've tried 4 different ones). Add music. Eject the device, turn off USB Mode. At first it started with some of the songs not being in some of the playlists. Sometimes it would even leave just one song (the last one I added in one case). Now if I turn on USB Mode while connected to my computer and eject it and turn off USB Mode... all the playlists are empty.
I've used Power Amp (v1.4 and 2.0), the stock player, Amazons MP3 app and others.
I have done the Factory Data Reset a couple of times.
I have not done the reset with holding the 3D+volume down+whatever to reset it though.
The only other thing I haven't tried is to put the original 8GB card that came with the phone back in and see what happens, but I am pretty sure if I do that my playlists will be empty again when I put the 32gigger back in.
At this point I have work-arounds for getting music and data to my phone (cloud drive), but I am very afraid of connecting the phone to my computer and turning on USB Mode.
Any ideas would be helpful especialy if you have seen this kind of thing before.
Thanks!
I noticed one of my playlists got emptied as well. Just one of the bigger ones though (my luck...) because another one wasn't affected. I don't know what exactly I did to cause it to happen. That never happened to me on any other phone. I'm just using the stock music player.

Believe it or not, Ejecting the drive from my computer before unmounting is what has caused this issue for me. Ive found if I just unmount usb storage from the phone itself and then unplug it all is well. I know the phone warns to Eject via the computer properly first, but its caused me data loss almost everytime Ive done it.

So I took the plunge this morning and did as you suggested. The playlists are empty again, but PowerAmp did put the playlists in the file-based playlists area. So now they are all "artist.m3u8". The good news is that I don't have to recreate them all again. The bad news is the way PowerAmp handles playlists now in v2.0, I also have "artist 1.m3u8" "artist 2.m3u8". Back top good news again, I can live with this. Just gotta figure out the best way to deal with it.
Thanks.
How do you exactly create playlists on your computer? Have you tried some sync software on PC like songbird with MSC and Device addon + anything but stock player (Google Music works for me). I didn’t test that on Thrill 4G yet, but it works perfect on my SGS2
The ones I have now I created in PowerAmp (which now has it's own way of doing playlists in v2.0). I have tried WinAmp, Amazon, the stock player and a couple of others. It used to remove some or all of the songs, but now it just always removes all the songs.
Test: created ACDC playlist in Amazon, plugged phone into computer, usb mode on\off, unplug, no songs... Oops, Spoke too soon. After PA and the system finished it's scaning of the SD card, the songs were there, twice. Adding songs in from another artist that I did not have a playlist for previously shows all the songs in Amazon and now the stock player is showing this artist after it scanned. PowerAmp (of course) does not and now all the playlists that I had created before are populated in Amazon and the stock player. Crazy.
Songbird looks really nice, but no equalizer or pre-amp which is one reason I like PA so much.
Here it is a couple hours later and I haven't even posted this... Well, I give up. I beleive it was an issue with PowerAmp so I am using PlayerPro now. Very nice design. A few extra features. No problem with playlists (knock on wood). Has a 10 band equalizer. Just what the Dr. ordered.
I found a fix to the problem!
Download the disable service app from the playstore, go to Media Storage under System apps and disable the MediaScannerService.
This does, however prevent the device from scanning for new media, so if you want new songs to show up in your device, re-enable the MediaScannerService and reboot.
EDIT: It seems that this app disabled the Media Storage from running on boot. Startup manager fixed it.
this is in fact a good solution!
