Hi Bros,
My droid3 has been acting up for a week now and I should have done something about it but didn't get a chance. What happened was whenever you would slide out the physical keyboard the display would go off. Sometimes the phone would still work but no display. Sometimes I would restart the phone by taking out the batter an the display would be a white screen with multi colore noise. I could get the phone back on by moving the keyboard in and out a couple times. I've been able to use it until today, and I didn't back up my stuff.
Now today I've been trying to get it started but all I get is the white screen. I just need a couple minutes to get a couple more things off of it. I've been trying all day and was wondering if anyone had any ideas. I need to go to the store and hope it is covered still. I have taken good care of this phone since I got it. Still i can able to turn the screen on evertime when i booth it with an open slider keypad. and some lucky times it does nothing if after words i close the slider but most of the time after starting if i close the slider screen goes black and phone is still runing in the back
If any one can help me with my droid3
Thanx
Hmmmn..did you drop ur fone? It looks like the ribbon on the digitizer is probably cracked, broken, shorted or come loose partially and is defective..this could be causing the white screen. Try re-seating/replacing the touch digitizer's flex-cable.
its the ribbon cable or LCD screen both can be replaced, kind of a pain, look on ebay, brake down links in my list

Had the same thing happen to two D3s. Both times it started happening occasionally, then within 2 weeks it happened every boot. One went back to Verizon for an exchange, and the other is sitting in a drawer. Please let me know how you fix this, if you do fix this.
I fixed mine, by replacing the lcd screen, but your flex cable could be the problem too

My tilt is acting very nasty lately. Over the past few weeks, I noticed that when I turned on the display, occasionally I would get something that looked like the static that you see on TV, but with colors. I would just turn off the screen, and turn it back on to clear it.
Now it's gotten worst! 98% of the time, it intermitantly gives me a blank solid white screen when I turn it on. Occasionally I can just turn to screen off, and on to reset it.
I'm running OEM WM6.1, and I've tried to reinstall the OS, but it didn't help. My phone has taken a beating, and the top corner has had a small crack in it over the past 2 months, but it didn't effect the touch screen, or picture. I also took off the cover to make sure the cables were all snug, and it didn't help.
Any suggestions?
Something got corrupted. If you search WIKI, it's call the 3 color screen stuck .. and you're better off posting at thread below. I hope someone can give you help (if you follow those steps and still no good)
As rule of thumb, do a lot of reading first
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=423486
On a second thought, it might be the LCD itself broken ..
Oh, believe me.. I'm not one to turn to the forums without doing research myself! All the research I was coming up with seemed to point to a slightly different WSOD though. I think you are right about the screen being broken. I've reinstalled the software, and it acts up even when booting up!
Unfortunately, I'm not impressed with ANYTHING on the market to date! If I'm unable to fix this, I'll just go back to a RAZR until the next gen WM7 phones come out. (With a tilt screen of course!!)
Oh, and even though the screen goes white, it's not stuck, as it fully boots up; I can hear sounds, and even activate the touch screen.
Also, I forgot to mention.. the first problem I started experiencing was that my tilt would go back from landscape mode! It was like the video board was crapping out. I could even see a slight flicker in the display from the refresh rate.
hi i think you may need a new Need a new flex cable ribbon as i had the same problem once
Thanks Tayzaa, I think you could be on to something. I'll open it up and take another look!
Hi!
is this problem solved?
WSOD is bug of Hermes. I would know if kaiser have the same WSOD-bug with D-pad?
Thought this was going to be an easy repair. Obtained a new screen from Repair Universe (Really quick). Followed the video and several take apart guides. Put the phone back together, turned it on, Get the Motorola Logo screen, bottom keys light up and then the screen goes blank, Have to pull the battery to shut it down. SO, I put the old screen back in, turned it on, Motorola Logo again and the then the screen dims to where you can hardly see what's there, but it goes through the boot process. Anybody have any ideas as to what the hell I did to screw it up? Swapped the screens around several times hoping I'd remember something and magic would happen but no such luck!! Thanks, Howie
Replacing the Bionic's LCD is one of the simplest phone repairs I've ever done. It's possible you got a faulty screen, or it's possible that the LCD is not your problem. I've purchased from them a few times but never had a problem...might want to check what their return policy is.
Yeah, plug and play! Should have taken 30 minutes tops? What has me puzzled is the old screen dims right out now so I screwed something up? Sorta hoping this happened to someone else ans they figured it out before I send it in for repair.....

Couple questions I had which may help clarify a few things, and could help in troubleshooting or finding someone who had a similar problem..
Why are you replacing the screen, was the screen dimming before you tried the replacement or only after?
Are you running stock blur or are you rooted/rom'd?
Information like that can go a long way to diagnosing the actual problems.
It's rooted and it's not a stock rom. I bought the phone and the LCD screen was damaged, so I ordered a replacement. I could still use it with the damaged screen but it had several white lines going down it. I rooted the phone and loaded a different rom before I switched screens and it was fine until I switched lcd's.

It's probably a faulty LCD in that case, as long as the old LCD is working as it was. If not then perhaps you damaged the back light circuit.
The old screen doesn't work anymore. Correctly anyway. The old screen is real dim?

I would have to agree with brandogg, could be the back light that is having the problem and that is why the old broken LCD is going dim now.
I'm assuming that the dimness problem occured only after the install of the replacement LCD since you only mentioned the lines as being the original problem.
One thing you could check is if the auto brightness is enabled. I would disable that and set the brightness as high as it will go and see if you still have the dimness issues.
That's when the dimness started on the old screen, after I installed the new one. I'll try to check the brightness after work. Thanks for the idea. I'll post back.

My screen goes black when I open the keyboard. After I close it, it stays black and I have to take the battery out.
The light behind the buttons on the screen still comes on, and it seems like the blacklight behind the screen comes on. I tested it and if I recieve a call while it's doing this, the phone rings and the backlight lights up, but I cant answer because the screen stays black.
This is driving me crazy...
It's doing this on fresh stock rom and a fresh install of minimoto 1.7
Any idea why this is happening and how to fix it?
This happened to mt xt862. It was a bad or loose flex cable. Had it replaced and the problem was solved.

I thought it was my ROM at first too, but it is the flex cable going out. It gets worse over time until you can't use the touchscreen at all or the backlight doesn't turn on. When I opened my D3 up, there was a clean cut halfway across the cable.
I recommend mobiledefenders[dot]com > Droid 3 > Flex Cable
Here's the disassembly video I used:

You will need a Torx 5 and Torx 3 (i used Torx 4 without issue)
Sorry for the lack of clickable links, I haven't met XDA's min post requirements yet
Hello,
I know a lot of us are having problems with displays and digitizers and im wondering if anyone else has this problem. Yesterday i replced my screen because it had a dead zone. I booted up the phone and everything worked great until i locked the screen. When i pressed the power button to unlock it there was just a black screen with lots of white lines forming. Without fail the phone will do this. I restart and its fine but when i lock it, it gets screwy. I really need to get this working since i dont even have a backup phone right now. By the way the display is not oem its a knockoff.
Since you change your LCD....it might be a different panel from your original. Check your kernel or flash the kernel again.

Same thing happen to me about a month ago during my G2 screen repair. I bought mine on ebay from a seller that had sold hundreds of them, figured I couldn't go wrong. Unfortunatly I never figuered out why it was failing and just ended up returning it for a refund. The second screen I bought was from etradesupply and it worked perfectly. Hopefully someone has a fix for this weird issue.
I had that exct thing happen to me, well rainbow colored lines. I shattered the screen on a corner drop. I took it to Gopher Mods, they replaced the screen and within a few minutes it happened. They replaced it 2 more times and eventually the last time the screen popped out a little bit since they did not add enough glue/sticky tape inside and the lines dissapeared. They also gave me a full refund, with which I got another G2. So two working phones now lol.
Basically the screen might be pressed in too tightly causing the cable inside to be kinked too much. Its very easy to damage the video cable in this phone mind you.

Try installi mg dorimanx's kernel which detects your panel type of search the thread for a kernel swap flashable. Your new panel may be of a different type causing the white lines.
The display was broken and went totally black after one hour. During the period it was still visible, I tried to plug the phone into my Mac in order to download the files, but, unfortunately, only one cm of the digitizer was still active, in the upper part. I couldn't switch from charging mode to file transfer, because it was lower. Then, before I had the chance to try anything else, the phone just reseted. I have a pattern lock and the Android won't start without entering, so now it's forever stuck on waiting this input. The screen is now fully black and the only way to try to start the Android is to blindly try to draw the pattern with a mouse connected through an OTG cable and I can't even know it's working. The phone vibrates when I try this, makes screen captures in I press power and volume down, but that's the only input I have. There's no USB debugging, so adb don't work.
Pretty much, the only idea I have is to replace the screen, but I don't want to invest too much in this, since I have a new phone anyway. I just need to recover some recordings from the phone. Do you think it's a good idea to try to buy a cheap Chinese screen or a functional digitizer with broken glass in order to access the phone?
Or maybe there is another solution I didn't think about?
You are gonna need the LCD touch screen digitizer and mid frame assembly. You'll end up spending around 150 bucks.

Unless you have a heat plate and are talented enough to change just the screen. If you think you can only change the screen then it would save you a lot of money. For that you would need UV glue the glass screen and a heat plate. There is 1 you tube video of a guy doing this, there is no talking in the video but you'll get the idea of what you will need. You can get a screen only + UV glue and a few sledgers for about 15 bucks. The heat plate more expensive, way more expensive. I would just buy a new digitizer mid frame assembly if it was me. Its very easy to change. Hope this helps
