I have a Droid Bionic that just got the ICS update and I have noticed an app that has no name and is 32kb in size. As I am generally picky about what I install, I checked the permissions of this app, and found it is pretty intrusive, even though only three permissions. It has modify/delete sd card contents and delete all application cache data.
I have never seen this on any of my previous phones (DX, DX2, and Bionic) prior to this ICS update. Can anyone tell me what this is and if disabling it will cause the phone to not work correctly?
For the record, it is not a rooted phone. Mostly stock with launcher and keyboard apps only for customization.
Thanks
Tim

Did you ever figure this out? I have the same thing... really bothers me. It appears to be part of the system as you can't uninstall it, only disable it
I don't know, but I am disabling it to test if it will affect my phone in any way.
But I would say it's possible that this is a patch for Jelly Bean, as they are working on putting it on the Bionic right now. Perhaps if somebody can check the app's code, than we'll know what it's doing there.
I was going to ask about this file but found this thread. I just disabled it - let' see what happens.

It's gotta be part of ICS, I flash to stock 4.0 using RSD light and it's still there. I would still like to know what it is though...
I was hoping to bump this thread as this un-named app showed its ugly face on my unrooted Droid Bionic. I have called VZW and Motorola and after hours on the phone between the 2, they both said the same thing, factory reset!
I tried to clean off my sD Card, and again, factory reset, and again... there it is!
Any progress on this? It seem nefarious in light of all the privacy concerns that have recently come to light.
Thanks all,
Bry.

If you install "rootappdelete" from the google apps. It is at the top of the list in System Apps.
Open it and you will find it is a Verizon installer... VZWInstaller.apk... 45.62KB
Located in /vendor/app/
Remove at your leisure. But, You may not be able to get new Verizon apps or updates. The only useful app I have from Verizon is Emergency Alerts. I live in Florida... storm central.

So I updated to FroYo manually thanks to the methods posted here. I've nearly reinstalled all my apps with the exclusion of one; Square. I cannot find it in the market and thought maybe the dev pulled it, but it shows up in 2.1 and web-based market browsers, just not in 2.2. Anyone else experiencing this? Can I just force the apk onto the phone somehow?

Same here.. seems like the copy protected apps are having problems.
This is not root or something else regarded - everyone has these issues.

Great to hear I'm not alone, but being an early adopter can sometimes blow (in the BAD way) =\
Is this being discussed in another thread? I did a search prior to posting and came up empty
EDIT: Mods, thanks for moving this to the appropriate forum. I've seen mention of this issue appear in various threads, though no thread of it's own. Will wait for devs to catch up with 2.2
I reported the same problem on modaco last night... I'm sure google will enable de protected apps this week, just a slight oversight on their side.
i had same problem, just put them apk on your sd card and install it. if it is being a stubborn app like a certain few just copy/paste or move them to data/private-app and install from in there. should take care of it 4 u.
Same problem here (Tapatalk Pro and Extended Controls missing).
when you create an app you can set a max api level to support, or not.
applications that have that set won't show on newer devices.
exzeus, square, and a few others seem to have done it...
give them about a month or so and you should see them come around.

Having the same issue here. Wife's N1 can't find WeatherBug Elite, or the Helix Launcher in the market. Even after reboot.
Same. Paul actually fixes it in his roms by changing the Rom fingerprint. Some of the unofficial nexus updates he integrated did the same thing to protected apps. Once fingerprint was changed, it seemed to have done the magic. I'm guessing that he will do the same next week for froyo.
Same here my paid app wont show up which means I may be losing sales so I'm pissed right now
Yeah, so no MLB app at the moment... which makes me unhappy.

Cool.. Just loaded it on vegan beta 5.1. Seems to work just fine. Don't know if I see any more stuff, but never really had a problem finding things with the other ones.
I do notice that the appearance seems crisper. Like maybe they are using a higher quality. Or, maybe not.
Still the same for me. Stars still truncated. Missing apps still missing.
The new apk is about 600 MBA larger than earlier one.
Jim
Just for fun I went ahead and did the market fix again. Didn't need to but I saw the earlier post and was curious. I never could get it to open after the first reboot. Had to reboot again. Then once it started working I have noticed more of the "android.process.acore" errors, and server errors then with the older one. I will be rolling back to a previous version myself since this doesn't seem to really make anything better.
I wonder if there should be an updated GoogleServicesFramework with this?

Works for me
I'm running vegan 5.1 with pershoots latest kernel and here are my findings thus far. I backed up market with titanium and installed the update, immediately opened market. Everything looks to be there, I searched for a few things and installed one or two. I looked for adw and couldn't find it, I did see its themes but not the app. Rebooted, loaded up market no fc's, until I tried to roll back to previous version to look for adw because I am almost certain it was there before. Interestingly I did see appbrain which I've never been able to get before. Never tried market fix, and did not notice any image improvement. Anyone know for certain what to look for to see if it actually improves previous market? I'm going to try and fix my market now and will report back if anyone's interested.
I installed via the apk (there is also an update.zip available) and all working well. No reboot or clearing Google Services Framework required.
I had previously preformed the well documented market fixes but could never quite get the entire market. Everything appears to show up now.
I'm not sure it is complete I can't find a few things. But then again I found a bunch of things I couldn't find before either. Catch 22 yet again.
anyone else having a problem with 'Media Volume' not working after this update? The rocker doesn't work, I tried to go in the settings (I had to unmute and turn the system sound back up - no dice), I even tried to play a video and turn up the sound using the software controls within that program....nothing works.
How do I revert back? Where is the old .apk located?
....also had to turn my wi-fi on with each reboot, which is new.
Running Vegan5.1
I think it would be most helpful if you guys actually listed the names of the titles of the apps that you either DO or DO NOT see once you have tried this. Just might help in the troubleshooting aspect. For what its worth.
ckelly,
search xda for market or vending.apk and you will find many versions to play with
Volume corrected on reboot #2.
Wi-Fi still needs to be manually connected..
@sixvolt
Since this appears to not improve things, you must have had even less apps show up than we did and this update brought you to par with the rest of us. Everything is relative
There are several posts here for fixes to get the full Market and I'm one of the unfortunate that none of these fixes work for me. Different roms, countless restarts and FC never worked. I was talking to a friend and he told me to download market enabler. Further digging pointed to me MarketAccess - an updated version without the ads. From what I've heard, Android Market will limit what you can 'see' depending on the service/carrier you have with your cell phone. And since we're on a tablet, that may be why some of us are SOL.
Market Access will trick Android Market into thinking you have a cell phone carrier with your tablet. For example, I chose T-mobile for the U.S. and I now have Kindle and Nook; two apps I couldn't download before.
I'm going to continue testing this and see what else I can get. For now, those were the two I couldn't see and I now have them installed through the Market.
You can find MarketAccess be googling... yes, Market Access. The site should be amip.tools (can't post links yet)
Is this what your talking about?
http://amip.tools-for.net/wiki/android/marketaccess
Are you sure this is safe and legal?
That's it. I didn't see anything that would make this illegal. Do you?

Reggie, Did you try different carriers when running the app? Some apps may be specific to the cell phone service.

Yeah this fix didn't really work for me either. Honestly if I need an app badly enough and its not showing I just download to my phone back it up to my dropbox app folder and sideload it right from dropbox on mt g-tab. Works great for me and I have a backup or the app also.

Hi,
The webpage says:
"MarketAccess, as well as MarketEnabler requires root available on the device. It means than you need to unlock your phone and install the su application which will manage permissions for other apps that want to get root on the device. Google for details."
Jim
I tried this to look for a specific app. Upon further inspection I don't see anything in there using this that wasn't in there using the Market Fix. Am I missing something? For what its worth, I'm looking for Colorize Widgets.
Thanks for your reply Jim. I must have misunderstood. I thought ecatapano's fix avoided using MarketAccess and MarketEnabler by accessing and "drop boxing" apks from an Android phone then sideloading them to the g-tab through drop box. I just don't know how to get the apks from the Droid to the drop box.

I've seen mention of using Astro file manager to backup, which I guess puts the APK on sdcard, then you have to have dropbox installed on your Droid, and you can then send the APK to dropbox.

I installed the market enabler,or whatever its called. I defaulted to t mobile as my carrier. I'm not certain what you are supposed to do for setup after that. So I went back into Market and found Colorize Widgets. I'm not convinced market enabler had any influence though. Any feedback on using market enabler is appreciated.

I'm using Koush's CM9 Alpha 12 ROM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356228 with the Franco kernel, and I'm saddened that it's sorely missing one big feature that i'm used to in the NSCollab ROM i came from. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959282)
In the stock Android 2.3.3 that came with the phone, if the Facebook app was installed, it could sync contacts over from your account, including phone numbers, emails, and pictures. The OTA 2.3.4 removed that function, as Google had deemed it as a violation of their TOS.
NSCollab (based off of CM7), which i'd used since 2.3.5, enabled that function somewhere in the system files, and it was fully usable, no questions asked. The CM9 build i'm using, however, lacks that feature.
I've compared both of their build.prop files and don't see any differences that would stand out, and I'm at an impasse here. I'm almost determined to find the setting in the CM7 ROM that allows Facebook syncing on this device and be able to use it in CM9. I'm not sure i want to comb every system file, though. Any assistance?
The reason it works in custom ROMs is because they patch it to work. It's not a build.prop issue I do not believe. It is a bit deeper than that. Hopefully someone can she some light to get it working. It's a feature I use as well.
But that's the explanation "why" it does not work.. because it's not supposed to by design lol.
by no means do I have an answer but, syncmypix in the market is a decent alternative for the tome being.

I'd determined that long ago, but i'm almost certain there's a flag somewhere in the system files. My cousin has an HTC Thunderbolt (horrible phone on the stock ROM) running the stock ROM, Gingerbread 2.3.5, and it's enabled on it. I know that Google specifically disabled it on their flagship phones, and i want to know how they did it and how to reverse it.

I have tried Syncmypix, Friendcaster, and another one that tries to re-enable native syncing, but none of them work near as well as native syncing.
In GB it was in system\app\ContactsProvider.apk , one line need to be added which whitelists com.facebook.katana. Maybe it's the same in ICS.
[edit]
There, I looked it up: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978470
Here you can find the official statement from Google about Facebook sync:

Anyway you can sync your contacts using Friendcaster and you can update your contact pics using syncmypix

I'd considered that, even set up a decompiling environment, but never got around to trying it. Just tried it, and found out that comparing the two ContactsProvider.apk files (from CM7 and CM9), that ICS does not use the arrays.xml that Gingerbread did. Adding it in, recompiling it, and signing it results in FC's and wiping out your contacts storage. Thank god for Titanium backup.
Edit: Derp, found out system apps aren't supposed to be signed. Trying again.

I well know what Google did, and i'm very disappointed in them. And i'd rather not use third-party apps if we can enable native syncing at the system level.
Pushing the unsigned apk doesn't cause FC issues, but it still doesn't sync. The Facebook app cuts off at "Other Settings". Does anyone want to test out the apk for me, see if they get the same results?
The APIs are different in ICS and doing the white list trick may not work. Check out the smali folder because there could be stuff that needs to be changed in there too...

I've already tried this. You'll be able to get the account to sync in Accounts, but the new contacts app is substantially different from the Gingerbread one... Like ^ says, I think a few smali edits have to be made to include this properly.

I'm combing the smali folder as we speak, but nothing stands out as a definitive match
The one problem about ics, you're working to fix. Thanks man! I hope you find your answer!
Haven't found it yet, though. I've been trying to get into contact with koush, see if he's had any insight.

Oh, sweet. I'm not familiar with that developer, so i didn't know how he does his stuff. I'll push and pull some files to and from my phone, see if i can't get it working.
I'm looking to strip out the proprietary bloatware that came preinstalled on my device (already got rid of a bunch of amazon stuff via the ADB), and I'm wondering how much of the moto crap I can get rid of too without losing my ability to get automatic security updates. Right now I'm looking at Moto, Moto Actions, Moto App launcher, Moto Display, and Motorola Notifications. I'm looking at going to a different launcher, and I'm just trying to work out which of these apps is essential for the phone to continue functioning properly. If it's safe to do, I would also appreciate some help finding those package names so I can nuke them via ADB as well.
Update: did more research. Stripped out everything aside from the moto app launcher that I replaced with Evie. Only reason it's still installed is the fact that I can't work out the actual APK name.

I know Outlook is not specifically 'proprietary', however, its something I don't use and have not found a way to remove the app.
Anyone else have success in removing Outlook?

Awesome info! So one can remove preinstalled bloatware on Amazon Exclusive phones via adb commands?
Question of the day, will this affect future updates?

Found 63 apps with Moto in it's name. I believe the launcher is com.motorola.launcher3
