Removing proprietary apps - Moto X4 Questions & Answers

I'm looking to strip out the proprietary bloatware that came preinstalled on my device (already got rid of a bunch of amazon stuff via the ADB), and I'm wondering how much of the moto crap I can get rid of too without losing my ability to get automatic security updates. Right now I'm looking at Moto, Moto Actions, Moto App launcher, Moto Display, and Motorola Notifications. I'm looking at going to a different launcher, and I'm just trying to work out which of these apps is essential for the phone to continue functioning properly. If it's safe to do, I would also appreciate some help finding those package names so I can nuke them via ADB as well.

Update: did more research. Stripped out everything aside from the moto app launcher that I replaced with Evie. Only reason it's still installed is the fact that I can't work out the actual APK name.

all of my previously rooted phones had threads where there was a list of "safe to remove apps". why does this list not exist for our moto x4? who is your provider ghost55?

AT&T, but I got it unlocked from amazon. I ended up using the ADB to remove all of the amazon crap as well as almost all of the moto proprietary stuff, (I only left the launcher I think) and it's been fine so far.

So why bother keeping the launcher if you went with another? I'm about to remove em all too but I'm on Google Fi's Android One version. I don't think I need any of Motorola's bloatware and I hate the idea of excess apps taking my space, RAM, and battery EVER.
I am surprised there's no one else chiming in on what's needed to o keep her functional. I like lean and mean

Oh ya, there's an app for that. APK inspector I think it's called. I don't have it currently installed but I have 2 in my play library. Report back on it later

Found 63 apps with Moto in it's name. I believe the launcher is com.motorola.launcher3

Thanks. Guess I'll ADB in and nuke that too when I have the chance.

I know Outlook is not specifically 'proprietary', however, its something I don't use and have not found a way to remove the app.
Anyone else have success in removing Outlook?

Awesome info! So one can remove preinstalled bloatware on Amazon Exclusive phones via adb commands?
Question of the day, will this affect future updates?

My Market fix

There are several posts here for fixes to get the full Market and I'm one of the unfortunate that none of these fixes work for me. Different roms, countless restarts and FC never worked. I was talking to a friend and he told me to download market enabler. Further digging pointed to me MarketAccess - an updated version without the ads. From what I've heard, Android Market will limit what you can 'see' depending on the service/carrier you have with your cell phone. And since we're on a tablet, that may be why some of us are SOL.
Market Access will trick Android Market into thinking you have a cell phone carrier with your tablet. For example, I chose T-mobile for the U.S. and I now have Kindle and Nook; two apps I couldn't download before.
I'm going to continue testing this and see what else I can get. For now, those were the two I couldn't see and I now have them installed through the Market.
You can find MarketAccess be googling... yes, Market Access. The site should be amip.tools (can't post links yet)
Is this what your talking about?
http://amip.tools-for.net/wiki/android/marketaccess
Are you sure this is safe and legal?
That's it. I didn't see anything that would make this illegal. Do you?

Well not that I see. I would like to here what other members here think of this method though.
I would love to be able to access the full Market too but I am, like you, one whose attempts to fix Market did not work. However, unlike you, even with the fix you led me to, my gtab continues to not be able to see the full Market apps. Bummer. But thanks anyway.

Reggie, Did you try different carriers when running the app? Some apps may be specific to the cell phone service.
Which apps are you looking for anyway?
Yeah this fix didn't really work for me either. Honestly if I need an app badly enough and its not showing I just download to my phone back it up to my dropbox app folder and sideload it right from dropbox on mt g-tab. Works great for me and I have a backup or the app also.
I'm giving it a try and see what it does.

Please excuse this totally noob-like question, but does your phone have to be rooted to do this? I have an unrooted Droid 1 and I'm trying to figure out where the apks live. Also, how do you back up to the drop box?
Thank

Hi,
The webpage says:
"MarketAccess, as well as MarketEnabler requires root available on the device. It means than you need to unlock your phone and install the su application which will manage permissions for other apps that want to get root on the device. Google for details."
Jim
I tried this to look for a specific app. Upon further inspection I don't see anything in there using this that wasn't in there using the Market Fix. Am I missing something? For what its worth, I'm looking for Colorize Widgets.
Thanks for your reply Jim. I must have misunderstood. I thought ecatapano's fix avoided using MarketAccess and MarketEnabler by accessing and "drop boxing" apks from an Android phone then sideloading them to the g-tab through drop box. I just don't know how to get the apks from the Droid to the drop box.

I've seen mention of using Astro file manager to backup, which I guess puts the APK on sdcard, then you have to have dropbox installed on your Droid, and you can then send the APK to dropbox.

I installed the market enabler,or whatever its called. I defaulted to t mobile as my carrier. I'm not certain what you are supposed to do for setup after that. So I went back into Market and found Colorize Widgets. I'm not convinced market enabler had any influence though. Any feedback on using market enabler is appreciated.
I tried it, set to tmobile USA. Still can't see
Adobe flash
adobe air
Firefox
tank hero
I couldn't see colorize Widgets after setting similar so I did market fix - clear cache etc. Then could see it, but still not others above.

Have you loaded Firefox on the g Tab?
I didn't get a chance to mess with this last night. It seems like everyone is trying T-Mobile. Has anyone tried different carriers?

32kb nameless app

I have a Droid Bionic that just got the ICS update and I have noticed an app that has no name and is 32kb in size. As I am generally picky about what I install, I checked the permissions of this app, and found it is pretty intrusive, even though only three permissions. It has modify/delete sd card contents and delete all application cache data.
I have never seen this on any of my previous phones (DX, DX2, and Bionic) prior to this ICS update. Can anyone tell me what this is and if disabling it will cause the phone to not work correctly?
For the record, it is not a rooted phone. Mostly stock with launcher and keyboard apps only for customization.
Thanks
Tim

Did you ever figure this out? I have the same thing... really bothers me. It appears to be part of the system as you can't uninstall it, only disable it
I don't know, but I am disabling it to test if it will affect my phone in any way.
But I would say it's possible that this is a patch for Jelly Bean, as they are working on putting it on the Bionic right now. Perhaps if somebody can check the app's code, than we'll know what it's doing there.
I was going to ask about this file but found this thread. I just disabled it - let' see what happens.

It's gotta be part of ICS, I flash to stock 4.0 using RSD light and it's still there. I would still like to know what it is though...
I was hoping to bump this thread as this un-named app showed its ugly face on my unrooted Droid Bionic. I have called VZW and Motorola and after hours on the phone between the 2, they both said the same thing, factory reset!
I tried to clean off my sD Card, and again, factory reset, and again... there it is!
Any progress on this? It seem nefarious in light of all the privacy concerns that have recently come to light.
Thanks all,
Bry.

If you install "rootappdelete" from the google apps. It is at the top of the list in System Apps.
Open it and you will find it is a Verizon installer... VZWInstaller.apk... 45.62KB
Located in /vendor/app/
Remove at your leisure. But, You may not be able to get new Verizon apps or updates. The only useful app I have from Verizon is Emergency Alerts. I live in Florida... storm central.

(Q) moto apps 2013 - 19.jan

I just saw on moto news this.
https://plus.google.com/106984013892934805292/posts/FQoszHnY3sH
there is app updates for:
Motorola Gallery v304100
Motorola Camera v5.0.7.1
Motorola Help v1.4.32
Motorola Update Services v7.0.1
Motorola Contextual Services v5.18.063
Motorola Migrate v1.6.0.30
Moto app v2.2.8
here is the link
http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/motorola-mobility-llc/
did anyone try to update, what is working and what is not?
The fact they are Moto updates means everything should be working Otherwise they probably wouldn't be released
So yes, clearly they are working. And working great. UI changes are meh though. And you can ALWAYS downgrade if the updates don't work
i upgraded camera - nothing seems new, new icon
then upgraded gallery - 5.0 icon, highlight reel added like on 2014 moto x
The camera and gallery work the rest do not work at all and break touchless for me
Has anyone else actually loaded and tried these
update: motorola mobility llc. decided to remove all .apks from website, so who downloaded and installed enjoy new updates and everyone else, wait for OTA which will be coming soon
Anyone have these apks that they can share?
Just curious, thanks.
Can anyone upload the moto contextual services 5.18.063?The file in the apkmirror is not found, many thanks……

Many thanks…I download the service, but it failed to install…Mine is droid razr maxx,i think it is the question…The moto assist ported in my phone works fine, just the home mode could not work, i think it belongs to the moto contextual service issue.so i want to the new version

Thanks they all worked here except for one.
i can't download.... why?
Thanks, I couldn't get them to download properly but I'll try again from my desktop. Maybe mediafire isn't liking the mobile download right now.
I got all working from my phone thanks! I had to remove assist and reboot before the new moto apk would install. Thanks for posting! All worked for me.
Update. Moto app installs but says it is not for this device.
My touch less display still works fine also.

Made a back up with titanium back up and uninstalled it after. Rebooted, then installed moto.apk however when launching moto it says its not compatible with device. So I deleted moto and restored assist. So all worked for me except the moto.apk no issues with them yet as well.
yes... moto app is not working but it will be in future, i think that is one of main reason why they removed all apks (who apply for soak testing probably know what am i talking) and the other reason is when ppl install context and update services it mess up their statistic...

[REQUEST] MOTO ACTIONS from Non FI & Non Android one model

Okay, I've an XT1900-2. The Non-FI version. But I've gone ahead and flashed the Android one ROM and everything is working well, but the Moto Actions in this ROM is devoid of the Fingerprint Gesture that I love.
So any Non-FI folk be kind enough to share the .apk, please??
Awaiting....
Here it is. I've added the Moto, Moto Screen and Moto Key aswell, just in case they are needed.
Folders are taken straight out of my /system/priv-app, not sure if you need to copy the odex files aswell.
PS: Next time when requesting some file, don't mark the thread as Q&A. It doesn't allow me to upload files directly to XDA this way.
Thanks, will keep that in mind. BTW, your Moto Actions shows Fingerprint Gestures? Even after replacement, mine doesn't show anything.
Yep, it shows everything here (inside Moto app). Did you also replace the Moto.apk app or did you just install the MotoActions?
No man, not working. Thanks for the apps and help, though.

Prime Vid - Not Available?

So I have a Fire 7 tab that, at some point a good while back I did a whole debloat and launcher highjack on. I haven't really used this tab in quite some time. Decided to start using it again just today so dusting it off. It's on the 5.6 software now, which I realized is a mistake but I didn't realize the 5.3.6 software update was actually the 5.6.3 update (due to the typo) until I started poking around the forums here again. So ya, not super but things are working just fine still so not a huge deal I guess.
Anyway, I just realized that Prime Video is one of the apps that apparently was disabled (or whatever) when I debloated a while back. In the apps list is says "Not installed for this user". When I click on the app, the screen for it is entirely greyed out (though it does show as taking up 50.16MB on the device).
Is there a way at this point for me to get this app back? I tried installing from the play store and from a downloaded apk to no avail. Any help much appreciated. Thanks!

You'll need to factory reset or reload/sideload FireOS 5.6.3.x (or any build down to 5.4.0.0). There is no way to restore individual apps that have been 'naturalized' via techniques used in the homegrown debloat scripts.
