[Q] How to upgrade GB to JB? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
Can someone guide / help me on how to upgrade my N7000 unit to JB and still rooted.
I'm still using GingerBread ROM with AbyssNote Kernel and already Rooted. Also installed with CWM
I want to know the step in upgrading it to Custom JB ROMs (MKalter JB, RocketRom)
Any suggestion will greatly appreciated.
Kindly refer on the images regarding details of my beloved SG Note
Thanks

You can not go from gingerbread to jb.
You need to download an ics rom ,like rocket with root and cwm. Do full wipe. Flash ics rom.
If that's cool download eybees jb
Full wipe and flash that .if root has gone open up SU and update the binary. The app will do this .just press on it .
Do not try skipping the ics . You will brick your phone ! Hope I helped

who says you can't go from gb to jb
i was on rooted stock gb and i flashed leaked stock jb over it and everything is working fine..
why do you think that ics has to be flashed ?
infact i did ask here at xda before flashing and nobody told me to flash ics over gb first

Same here. I downgraded to GB yesterday to SIM unlock my phone and went back directly to JB the second it was done.
Safe kernel is the only thing that matters, Rom base has nothing to do with it.

You mean guys I can flash directly to any Custom JB ROMs without bricking my beloved Note?
Downloading the RocketRom V1 JB (by Eybee1970 -Thanks!)
Currently, I'm using the AbbysNote 4.2 Kernel I just need to follow this steps below and everything will be fine. Right?
copy ROM on your USB-storage
boot in Recovery
FullWipe (also when coming from other Sammy-JB-ROM!)
Format SYSTEM!!!
flash ROM (it will reboot automatically in most cases)
after initial setup, open Super SU-app and you have to update SU-bin (app will do that for you if necessary!)
*FullWipe - clear cache, clear Dalvik, format system, factory restore?
Thank You..

i agree!! i've done that several times to flash from gb to jb using abyss kernel (just a personal preference); there are other safe kernels to flash from.

Successfully Flashed Custom ROM
From GingerBread 2.3.5 upgrade to Jelly Bean 4.1.1
This is what I've do:
1.Flash Abyss Kernel (Many Thanks to Chasmodo)
2.Reboot CWM Recovery
3. Wipe Data
4. Wipe Cache
5. Mount/System -> Format/System
6. Advance/Wipe Dalvik Cache
7. Wipe Battery Stats
8. Fix Permissions
9. Flash Rom RocketRom V1 - (Many Thanks to Eyebee)
10.Reboot (it will reboot by itself) - wait for at least 2 - 5 mins
Lastly Wait and do the Gangnam style ^_^
Note: you MUST have a safe kernel in performing this.
Many thanks to all the guys who reply to this post
Many thanks to XDA!:good:

flash hydracore kernel with mobile odin or if you can deal with triangle with pc odin and then you can flash whatever you want.

caution. hydracore might not work with this rom

Present HydraCore kernels will most certainly NOT work with the JB leak Rom.

[Q] Criskelo ICS ROM v2 install

hi there,
first off, im sorry for being a total noob.
i was trying to look for a full guide to install Criskelo ICS ROM v2.
i found an online guide from the site rootgalaxynote dot com
but its for the older version.
i was wondering if i can do this step but install using the V2 or follow the steps, install the older version then use clockworksmod to load v2?
once again, please accept my apologies as i have never touched an android in my life.. im so new, my note is still in the mail and i havent even received it yet.
Go the the development section find criskelo v2 and follow the instructions in the first post? Why go to another site when the instructions are right here

so before i run the steps above, i should install clockworkmods and titanium backup to backup my current rom and apps rite?
then i download the ics repack by chainfire and the criskelo v2 mod
then install mobile odin and install the mod?
Very simple as ABC.
First you use PC odin and flash a single file called chain fire repack.tar
This ROM is already rooted.
Boot up and install triangleaway1.25.apk
Copy your ROM to SDcard
Reboot to recovery using the CWM app in Your note
Wipe data.factory reset wipe the other one below the list. I forgotten the name
Wipe devalik cache from advance settings
Install the zip file called Criskelo or any other ROM from Sdcard.
Once you are done reboot and enjoy your new rom.

This does however increase the binary counter thus voiding warranty. By taking some extra steps you'll be able to upgrade to any ICS rom without increasing the binary counter.
What I did was I flashed one of the pre-rooted roms found in a thread in the dev section. After that I flashed the CF Root kernel for the rom I installed (I used the pre-rooted LA6 rom so I used the CF kernel for LA6).
Now you have full root and CWMR so you can flash any rom you like. For ICS roms, install Mobile Odin, flash the ICS LP1 repack, reboot to recovery, do a full wipe and install any ICS rom you want to try.
Pre-rooted stock roms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
For CF-Kernel check step two "2. I Want ROOT + CWM" of this thread and download the appropriate files for the pre-rooted kernel you flashed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360

To my knowledge Triangle Away only does exactly what is says, it will remove the yellow triangle after you've flashed a custom kernel through pc Odin and thus having triggered the binary counter. To my knowledge Triangle Away is not able to reset the counter though I could be wrong as I've never used it myself. There is however a thread explaining how to remove both the triangle and reset the counter using a usb JIG: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354888
Counter is reset
using triangle away does reset the counter as well as removing the triangle also says your rom is samsung original even if it is not!.
you must use the correct ics version to do this one that does work is I9220LP1-N7000-ICS-REPACK worked just fine on my note. It does not work on all current versions of ICS. enjoy
Thanks a lot for the info! I really didn't know and I thought I read somewhere that it didn't reset the counter.
does the triangle away work for GB phones? just wondering
No

Hi, maybe you already flashed, but this is how I did it. No problems at all.
Starting from stock GB. (Or you can flash stock through ODIN)
Used CF-Root to get Root and CWR on the phone.
Downloaded and flashed Abyss Kernel 4.2
rebooted recovery
flashed ICS ROM from sdcard.
Worked perfectly well for me.
Hope this helps.

As soon as you flash the rom, abyss kernel will be overwitten (you get CWM).
Now a piece of advice, there are great risk on flashing any rom based on leak repack, there is an issue with the kernel and the eMMC, which basically can fry your phone (if you are unlucky).
I personally decided to flash back to stock GB.... just in case. I'm not willing to gamble with my note, but that is me.

[Q] ICS Stunner to gb

Hi All,
I'm on ics stunner 1.4.26_1 LP6 kernel. I wish to go back to stock GB after seeing some bricked notes. whats the best way to go about it?
can i just download the stock firmware i was using before from samfirmware and simply flash pda using ODIN desktop?
if so, any options i should check before flashing?
many thanks!

Solution
Here's what I Did:
Downloaded the stock jpkk2 firmware from sammobile.com
Used PC ODIN to flash the stock ROM. Re-Partition option was not selected.
Once done, the phone rebooted and went into a bootloop.
To cure that I went into recovery and did a factory reset, Wipe Cache and next time it rebooted normally.
For those who had the same situation as mine and dont wish to go into lengthy procedure in the linked thread above, you can do what i did

+1 to that. I used the exact same procedure, everything went fine and I'm now running RocketROM v23, as I think it's the ok-est ROM so far on GB
I do so miss ICS though sometimes...
EDIT: apparantly I might be very wrong.

According to the opinion of Entropy512, you may indeed have something to worry about. Even after flashing your eMMC can still be damaged. No offence, but I'm more inclined to believe him than you!

Neh, don't trust those guys that know what they're talking about, have faith in little old me
That's troubling news indeed. I've done a crapload of wiping and flashing ICS roms and kernels but so far I've had no problems whatsoever. But after reading that thread I might just revert back to a GB rom. I love Stunner's rom and ICS in general but would be devastated if my Note cries 'mein Leben' a week before the official, hopefully problem-free ICS update.
I hope Samsung is aware of these faulty driver settings, otherwise we'll see loads of bricked Notes in a couple of weeks.

Yes, it's very troubling! I've changed to the DAFUQ kernel, which is not based on the faulty Samsung leaks and is supposedly safe. It's a little bit buggy on Stunner (no boot anim, sometimes colours are screwed up and you have to turn the screen on and off, but no major bugs so far). For me it beats going back to GB because I simply love tablet mode. EDIT: Also, no external sdcard...
Personally I think a big fat warning about the leaked kernels should be stickied on the forum or something because lots of people don't seem to be aware of the issues, including more experienced members.
I just flash abysnotekernel and restore my GB backup. It takes less then 5 mins.

Unless I've misunderstood Entropy512s posts on the matter, you still risked a hardbrick because you used the leaked kernel in stunner to flash the abysskernel.
The safest way to revert to GB is to flash an original or prerooted ROM using PC Odin thusly:
1. Odin flash a prerooted rom from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
Do a factory reset wipe from the recovery menu (volume up + home + power) if you are stuck in a boot loop.
2. Flash a CF-rooted kernel from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331784
3. Flash your preferred flava from CWM
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
For me this is the safest way to do this:
1. Download the Abyss 4.2 Red Pil kernel and put it on your internal sd card.
2. Boot into recovery
3. Flash the Abyss kernel and do not exit recovery yet
4. Go to the advanced menu and choose"reboot recovery"
5. Now you're in the Red Pil recovery
6. Wipe Cache, then Wipe Dalvik Cache, then Wipe data/factory settings
7. Install the GB Rom of your choice
8. Reboot. At this point, I leave the phone alone for 10 minutes - I don't set up anything, just let the phone sit. Then I reboot again.
9. Set up your phone and enjoy

Technically you could still brick your Note because you're flashing Abyss with the flawed ICS kernel you're on. I did the same however to revert back to a GB rom (thanks again pboesboes for posting the links) and at the moment I'm using Checkrom with Abyss 4.2 and Nemus Launcher.
To make absolutely sure you won't run into any problems Hawklan_D's method is the safest.

I'm not the person to say for sure, but I think if you've successfully flashed away from the leak repack ICS kernels by whatever method with no ill effects, you're in the clear.
That's my hope anyway, having messed with a lot of the flashing methods / kernels with (touch wood) no damage to my Note.

How to downgrade from official ICS to GB safely

Hello guys
Since warnings about N7000XXLPY ICS kernel risks of hardbrick galaxy note i suppose that's a lot of people like me who installed last ICS 4.0.3 want to go back to GB but are affraid to do it to avoid geting theire Note dead.
I asked the question but no answer i just found this video explaining how to do it ,The problem is that it is a downgrade from an UNOFICIAL ICS rom to GB.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jr3DDEh8vyc&feature=plcp
STEPS : 1- go to recovery mode ( even it's not recommended to do anything with cwm with lpy kernel )
2- flash abyss kernel 4.2 final (browse zip )
3- reboot recovery
4- Wipe all- reset factory
5- always in cwm, browse GB rom and flash it
6- Reboot system
My question is : can we use the same way to go back to gb from official stock ics 4.0.3 SAFELY ? We have not many times to do it, may be we have one chance to do it right or we get the galaxy note bricked so plz any help will be appreciated .
Thanks

just for safe purposes, this is how i done it from any ics roms
1. use mobile oding pro and flash any GB firmware (tar file) by injecting the everroot and mobile oding
2. since by doing the above procedure, you will not be having any CWM recovery, hence i used stock recovery to clean the system (wipe data, or factory reset and cache partition)
3. reboot system
4. flash abyss kernel red pill using mobile oding or CWM and then enter int o recovery
5. clean wipe data, cache and dalvik
6. flash any GB custom ROM

Which will potentially brick his device.
Now who is stupid?
In general you come across as cocky and arrogant and contribute little.
Whist on LPY no nandroid should be restored. Firstly you should flash a GB kernel and enter recovery.
Alternatively flash stock GB with ever root via mobile odin pro ensuring you wipe all.
This is the stock type alternative to the very good abyss explanations offered above.

I was twice been on the offical ICS .. and safely returned to GB .... and will remain here until settle matters with ICS ...
I used the method of through the Odin PC ... I do not use backup ... because I use this phone for entertainment ... so my data is not so important ...

Thanks

me also did flashed back to gb custom rom from Lpy+cf root.
I would not say that my method is safe and secure. But i will share the way how to do that.
1. Boot into download mode. ( without wipe anything.
2. Apen pc odin and connect your devices with pc.
3. After devices connected with pc, please select gb pre-rooted rom tar.file at pda button.
4 Press start and flash. after the rom finished install and let the rom fully booted and settle down for a while.
5. Install mobile odin and flash any gb rooted kernel with cwm such as franco....speedmod.....
6. After install rooted kernel, your gb rom will be fully rooted. and you can go cwm to do any wipe and install custom rom.
( This is the way how im went back to gb from Lpy. I would not say that is the safer way. But me successfully to did it, and wanna sharing here)

After step 2, how to let step 4 happen ?
Step 2 mention no CWM, why step 4 still mention CWM ?

just for safe purposes, this is how i done it from any ics roms
1. use mobile oding pro and flash any GB firmware (tar file) by injecting the everroot and mobile oding
2. since by doing the above procedure, you will not be having any CWM recovery, hence i used stock recovery to clean the system (wipe data, or factory reset and cache partition)
3. reboot system
4. flash abyss kernel red pill using mobile oding or CWM and then enter int o recovery
5. clean wipe data, cache and dalvik
6. flash any GB custom ROM

I did the exact same way no problems at all. But now I am back on fully rooted kingdroid ics. Used mobile odin to flash stock ics (wipe cache and Dalvik cache) and after that I flashed cfroot kernel and updated.supersu binaries. With cwm I flashed kingdroid ics. No problems at all!! But it takes a while till you get there

First i'd like to apologise for going off topic. But when i saw Wildestpixels signature i got too excited. Your Nexus S ROM: PixelRom, The best ROM I've ever used. If You're going to be working on the N7000 we are all very, very lucky! You've made me so glad i got a Note. That is of course, if you are working on the note.
It's so nice to see a Dev i recognize. You've made my day.

These are the correct instruction for your case, taken from the OP of the Rom.
DON'T flash FROM ANY SAMSUNG ICS OR ROMS BASED ON SAMSUNG KERNELS (my CM9, AOSP, etc)
Flash any stock GB rom with odin / or any GB kernel, and reboot into recovery once again before flashing this
Install Rom: http://d-h.st/sGz 171.14 MB
Install HYBRID Gapps: http://tjohansson.is-a-geek.com/file...0511-fixed.zip
Wipe caches, factory reset is a must if you're coming from another rom than CM9
Hope that helps mate!
Yyyyyy no so what i must do?

Inserting a line with "root your GB" wouldn't come amiss in this little set of steps.

You have to gain root once you have flashed a GB Rom via PC Odin.
Then you can proceed to flash Paranoid.
Have I lost full root????

You don't have full root, that is certain. The only way you're gonna regain it is by
going back to rooted GB, then back to ICS.

Thanks, that's kind of what i thought.
I have a nandroid backup of rocket rom v22 where I was fully rooted before. If I restore back into it, what's the best method of getting back to PA and still be fully rooted - I have mobile odin pro BTW if that's any use?

Do not do restores through a partially working Recovery, you might mess up your phone.
Do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25285584&postcount=3
After you are done injecting the CWMR, go to Paranoid thread and follow the instructions.
OMFG i'm an idiot
Well durrrr, just realised I hadn't checked the option for mounting system as writable - I am fully rooted on what is easily the best ROM I've used EVER!!!
Thanks a lot for the replys - this is a much better place thanks to people like you

Do you have vcf backup of contacts? I personally have my contacts on google contacts, so whenever I flash a new ROM, contacts restore by syncing google account.

[Q] From an old ICS Stunner ROM, to a new CM9/10 ROM

It's been a long time since I was last seen here, I've been busy working and studying, but now that it's vacation I'd very much like to update my ROM.
Currently I'm on Kernel version: 3.0.15-I9220ZCLP5-CL295568
And my ROM is ICS Stunner Beta 5.0 (yes, a pretty old one)
CWM: v5.0.2.7
So, the question is.. How do I get from that ROM, to a new, updated one?
I've been looking around but there are no specific guides on how to do this.. And I rooted mine back when I was on 2.3.4.
Honestly, I have no idea what I should get back to before putting a new ROM over it.
It'd be great if any of you could help me out describing how it's done! I would really appreciate the effort.
Thank you in advance, and hopefully I'll be able to get the best out of my Note again after this!
Use PC Odin to flash a stock gingerbread ROM, then root and install clockworkmod recovery, download and place whatever ROM you'd like to flash on your external sd card or internal memory, lastly boot into recovery (hold volume up + home + power buttons) and factory rest, wipe cache partition and dalvik cache then flash the ROM and reboot.

Can I go directly from a GB ROM to a ICS/JB ROM? Or do I need to flash some ICS update first?
Thank you for the explanation thus far!

You can go directly from a rooted GB ROM to a ICS ROM. I wont recommend JB rom as of now as its a preview and not a daily driver.
No flashing of ICS repacks. Forget them. They are now history
Alright thank you.
By the way, I'm on the LP5 Kernel from Stunner ROM, which had alot of bricks when you flashed stuff.
Is this still an issue? If so.. How do I work around it? Because I don't want to brick it obviously.
Bump .
Nobody has an answer for me? Please?

I just explained to you the "100% safe way" to go from a stock ics rom to a custom rom in my last post. Stock gingerbread first through pc odin, root, install clockworkmod recovery, flash custom ics/jb rom of choice.

Follow these instructions.
If you have CWM installed and your device have full root.
Reboot into CWM Recovery
Install a safe kernel (hardcore, notecore, cf root, franco etc) or flash abyss 4.2 redpill recovery.
Reboot recovery
Now full wipe for a clean install.(cache/dalvik /data)
Flash rom
Reboot system
Done.

So I wouldn't even need to go back to GB if I follow your instructions sahilarora2003?
And you install a kernel just by flashing a .zip file right?
+1 I would hold off on the Jelly.....nothing exciting now. Give it a little more time....like another 3-5 updates I flashed CM10 and lasted 10mins before I came back to ICS. :good:
