Alright guys, I know a lot of you are bummed out the Nexus 4 has a cap of 16gb.
I only want to mention that *the Optimus G exist with what on want in two flavors. Either 32gb on Sprint or 16gb internal and 16gb external on AT&T.
Right now the status of the bootloader for the Optimus G is locked but, *IF* they unlock it, it will be a Nexus device with LTE AND more storage.
It might be a long shot but, why not sign the petition in the Optimus G forums and see what happens? If it can get an unlocked boot loader, it would be a major win for everyone since it's using identical hardware to the Nexus with more perks and it would give contract options to those who are stuck with At&t or Sprint anyway.
I know it's unlikely but, it's a perfect opportunity for a lot of us to get everything we want and there is no point in wasting it.
Nearly identical hardware. Especially the Sprint version is fairly different. Only time will tell how easily a rom from the Nexus 4 could be ported to an Optimus G. (already signed the petition weeks ago btw)
Unlocking the bootloader is only like half the battle. If LG doesn't provide up-to-date source code, getting a stable AOSP/AOKP rom running on it will be very difficult. Considering LG's track record, I doubt they'll provide any source code.

I'm glad you signed the petition! And while it's entirely possible I missed something, I think there is a pretty strong chance with an unlocked bootloader the Optimus G will provide the best of both worlds. ROMs to keep it up to date and more space for those who need it.
I will agree I could be totally wrong and only time will tell.. But, I sincerely hope I get the chance to be proven wrong if I am.

AFAIK it won't matter a whole lot because, Qualcomm does provide plenty of sources.
LG has no plans to unlock the bootloader. The source of this was from a representative. Unfortunate, but logically, why would LG release 2 devices with almost identical hardware ans both having unlockable bootloaders, especially with one being significantly cheaper than the other.
Sent from my MB860 using xda app-developers app
I had an HTC Desire, which was almost identical to the Nexus One, and it wasn't as easy as unlocking it and flashing, there were HTC Desire specific drivers which couldn't be obtained from AOSP.
Also depends on how much desperately people need more storage. Obviously there's a lot of chatter over it (heck even I'm torn in this debate), but there are so many factors as well. While in the most ideal situation you can convert the Optimus G into a Nexus 4, you still have those slight hardware differences as pointed out before. Then there is pricing. The Optimus G unlocked costs a lot more unlocked and if you go the post-paid way you'll be locking yourself into a 2 year contract.

If people are unable to get out of their contract for one reason or another, they can still get a deal on the carrier branded version.
Logically why would LG NOT unlock the bootloaders? It just means anyone who wants ROMs/Updates can get them. There is frequently carrier branded and unbranded versions of phones.

ROMs don't have an automatic compatibility between devices but, a large number of drivers will probably be usable from the Nexus itself. HTC devices in general are a pain to dev for sadly. If they weren't I'd be considering the One X+ even if it is more sluggish than the Optimus G.

As I said it's not an ideal solution for everyone. However, more people and more support makes it more ideal for everyone involved.
If you are on At&t and a family plan anyway, it's 200$ to get the Optimus G and comes with expandable memory.
I wouldn't say you can "convert the G into nexus 4" per se, I'd say with proper dev support it would be the next best thing to a Nexus 4.
I also wouldn't advocate purchasing the Optimus G off contract unless it was for sure getting an unlocked bootloader.
I completely understand none of this is an "ideal situation" but, honestly if people would show interest, great things could happen.
Hopefully the LG Optimus G will get JellyBean at least, if locked bootloaders weren't enough and if LG doesn't decide to be so rude.

This is the greatness of a nexus. There were Roms before the phone was officially released. It's the same thing every year. Last year was galaxy nexus vs RAZR and rezound. This year it's nexus 4 vs s3, note 2 and optimus g. Just like every year the only one of these phones that are still going to matter in a few months is the nexus.

Hey, just wanna know what your replacement will be.
Mine will be the sgs3. well dev support for this phone is highly supported and updates are seeding regularly. I am really disappointed for lg's lack of support for this phone i mean we've been waiting for the ics upgrade for months and still none. then jb came out, still no ics. what gives?
So, what will it be?
Very hard decision. I don't like the cover of the sgs3 and the HTC One X and LG Optimus 4X HD have Nvidia chipsets, so I think I won't buy any of these phones.
First, I wait for a new Nexus phone, because I like the instant updates.
First of all let we have ICS, replacing 2x w/o ICS upgrade is too early decision

Yes. I'll also wait for ICS update and 4.1 custom roms.

P.S. I use your kernel and all I can say is BUTTER! It's super snappy and zero lag and good battery life. Keep it up!
when i will eventually get another phone it will be a nexus.
Some Nexus, but not now, maybe next year.

Nexus.
If they don;pt hurry up with ICS for the 2x I'll get a nexus 7 soon and just tether it to the 2x.
Will wait for ICS upgrade.Till now the xda developers community had done an awesome job with GB.Love to fell the ICS on O2x tweaked by them:cyclops:.If LG decides to abandon O2x after delivering ICS update then no LG for me.Will discourage all possible buyers for LG products.Next device will obviously be Google nexus at least updates will be on time:laugh:.

Purchased this phone with high hopes just after its launch ignoring sgs2. But then LG has not handled its the then flagship mobile FIRST DUAL CORE IN THE MOBILE WORLD effectively. Whereas Samsung has given timely updates to the contemporary and parallel SGS2, LG has made a mess of it. Not only phone, LG's PC suite is the worst I have ever handled. In fact many of us including myself bricked my phone while taking official updates. Its for all these brilliant XDA DEV developers and Paul O'Brien from MODACO we are able to get the money's worth.
Doesn't know what I will buy next but not LG. But I have seen almost all the companies making this sort of mess with one or two of their models..Greatest among those were SE Xperia X10 which even had the bootloader locked. The strong developer community here took up the challenge and everyone of XDA knows what height they took Xperia X10 upto. Its really great for us that this community still exists and that too for free gives support to so many phones. Even my Xperia x10 mini which Sony ditched after 2.1 can now run Jellybean. Thanks again to all the Devs and contributors of xda developers once again.
If i was about to buy a new smartphone nowadays, I would prefer the Htc one S..very nice performance, if you don't mind the
smaller screen (4.2 or 4.3, don't remember now) and the supposely 'old dualcore cpu'. I was impressed by the benchmark tests I saw, even higher than the new quad core phones.

I bought myself a cheap Galaxy Nexus to replace my 1 year old O2X - it was just too tempting with the Jelly Bean release. But I will definately be looking at the next lineup supported by Google.
One thing is certain, I will never buy another phone from LG - their support and software for the O2X was a joke, I really hope they get their **** together soon (for everyone unfortunate enough to end up with one of their products).
Has anyone considered the HUAWEI line-up??
They are fairly cheap, good hardware and screens, incredible software support and , in my modest opinion, a very attractive design.
Look at where HUAWEI are present in modern communication technology today!!
They are all over, but covered by others facade.
Now they want to come out in the open and dont want to fail.
I bought the HUAWEI Honor for my mother, 70 years of age, and I am almost envious of that device. She loves it and uses it for everything!!
Despite all the software shortcomings of LG, I consider the O4X a very worthy replacement of my O2X, if I were to replace it right now

The fact that LG MAY get the green light to make Google's next flagship phone for Android 5.0/ Key Lime Pie is sad...Samsung has done it since the Nexus S right?! And they did the GNex and Sammy has the right to go and make the Next Gen Nexus!!.. Thank if you agree! and comment if you don't and why you don't

+1 to that. Got a Nexus 7 (actually work got it for part of the demo kit, but it comes home with me every night) and I love it. Could be better - sd-card support and 3G would make it perfect), but it's probably the best tablet I've ever used. Asus made a great bit of hardware, Google made a great piece of software - who needs to be a brand snob?
I think it's good to have a manufacturer other than Samsung make the next Nexus. HTC had one chance, MOTO got the XOOM and ASUS got the 7. Why should Samsung get 2+ GED's?

Why would Lg be a bad choice for the next nexus?
FYI software is a VERY invalid response, considering their phone would be VANILLA Android (nexus device, herp derp)
Lg makes great phones.
Lg optimus G anyone?
Htc would be a good choice again too...the Nexus One was EASILY the best phone of its time. The nexus S should've never been released, considering its a REBRANDED GALAXY S (prove me wrong, go ahead and name differences between the galaxy s and nexus s), and the galaxy nexus was outdone by samsung themselves with the release of the GS3 which is basically a GNex with a quadcore exynos and not OMAP inside. The s3 didn't even upgrade the screen from the gnex!
I think samsung has had their time in the nexus sun..
As Motorola Mobility is a subsidiary of Google or simply, now owned by Google why the next Nexus can't be made by Motorola?!
I had this same thought when the Galaxy Nexus came out from Samsung, but at that time Google didn't acquired the company it seems.

I'm assuming Google is afraid of violating any Antitrust laws. Not sure if them owning a manufacturer that produces their flagship would violate anything but I don't think Android OEM's would be too jazzed on the idea.

Exactly, In a way I do agree with some of the above posts about how Sammy got theirs twice in a row, but honestly, I have had all the Flagship phones and out of all of them, I would have to say Samsung did the best with the Nexus S. It was awesome, a good body, just the specs were low key...the GNex literally was an Extended version of the S. If Moto was to make a Flagship phone for Google, I'd cry and possibly not buy another Android phone until the following year! ;D

I think Google released JB when they did as a "Buffer" OS and to keep us all down and sane because I am sure they saw how various Android Forums exploded with questions as to when Google is making an update. Because look at JB vs. ICS, theres only a few differences, Google Now and Project Butter. I think when Google releases KLP...Hopefully in the near future, it will be a big step up and a competitor to the much inferior iOS 6 ;D

@Ozeer, you think that LG cares about that?
Most part of the people use the phone like they use the car, the computer, etc... they turn on use what/how they know/can and while it works its perfect.
If I knew for example that the camera was so bad, I'd choosed another phone independentely of the bootloader be or not locked.
Camera its an issue, cause if the bootloader is locked, most part of the people don't even know what that is but, a bad camera no one wants.

The 4X's screen is superb, but the Galaxy Nexus' one didn't seem that bad. Expendable memory is one thing, but the encrypted bootloader results in zero development for this device. LG doesn't care, they earn their money with fridges and TVs and it seems they blow out new mobile phones every month.

The 4x hd is great even the camera doesn't seem to be an issue at all. And I even kept the 4x as my daily driver sold the s3 one x and even didn't keep my note and note 2. This phone offers the best boom for the buck and it does everything the one x does and the screen seems nicer on the 4x then the screen on the s3. And this device is very good looking. The it seems smaller then the s3 actually. I didn't had one issue with this phone and battery seems pretty decent. Specially if u install the quad gear box app for the phone. Is specially for the 4x it seems to make it even last a tab longer. All in all a great device. Yes lack of Roms is a downer but the installed software performs quite nice. I've noticed that as smart phones became better and better, the amount of phones with keyboards decreased. Me thinks they don't make many now-a-days because most people wouldn't have a need for a netbook or a laptop if a phone as powerful and big as the AHD had a keyboard.

Definitely will not purchase Motorola X. While Motorola phones Have very good build quality. I believe the hardware to be subpar compared to samsung and htc. The motoblur Interface on Atrix HD is a big improvement over that of Atrix 4g. which is a big step in the right direction . However Motorola has with both phones shown that it does not support updates as well as its competitors. for example atrix 4g support ended at android 2.3.6 and atrix Hd support ended at android 4.1.1. Depends on the bootloader status. If unlockable, then it will pick up really fast...if not, probably similar to us or the Defy -- depends on how easy it will be to root. Even locked, if its rooted there's a good chance it'll run ports of our roms.

Agreed. Though hardware is a moot point since most apps hardly support dual core, let alone quad and otca core phones. With Moto I don't even consider OEM support as a factor since I expect it to be next to nothing from the start. Moto releases OS updates as new devices.... My next phone will probably be HTC or Sony -- both have good OEM features, OEM support, and community support. I'm leaning towards Sony, only because I've never once bought a bad Sony product or had a Sony product break or go bad that wasn't directly related to me abusing the hell out of it.....usually because I drop them.

I dunno. Whatever Sony has next year that I can afford when I decide to upgrade the AHD.
I'm really interested in the Moto X. I like the look of some of the feature, notifications and active mic. My next upgrade is in Feb, so I'll make a decision at that time. However, I have heard rumor of a Moto Nexus coming (that was the leak rumor last week), if that is true, I may go for that off contract. I know everybody has different opinions on hardware and specs, but the Atrix HD is my 7th Moto phone (2nd android based), and outside of one poor flip phone, they have all been top notch.
I agree with skeevy theory...
as time pass, and android being better each by each year
The company's have been excluding sliding keyboards
I remember when the Samsung epic 4g came out I was thrilled to see a good phone for fast texting and typing emails
As I prefer a phone like the AHD with a sliding keyboard regardless of thickness of the phone
Not much of a big deal
Just like old non-android LG xenon

Probably a Sony phone as long as they keep micro SD. That feature being implemented or not is very telling about a companies true understanding of it's users. I prefer companies that allow storage expansion.

I would buy a moto X...I think what google is trying to prove is that one dont need high end spec'ed phone to get good phone experience. Moto X will be a good buy in 6 months...

I've been up for a upgrade for a few months now. I'm going to take it and hope for some good development.

Provided you can unlock the X's boot loader, then it'll probably be on par with us in no time at all. If locked, it might run ports of our roms if it is rooted and a rom flash method like SafeStrap is made.
If I were considering getting one, I'd wait a week to a month to see what's up with it, its quirks, and how much the community will support it.
@ai6908
Agreed. Though I think X is a mass beta program designed to test out new features for the Nexus line -- the low power cpu cores for always on microphone, the active display. Still, no SD = no Buy. As is, I haven't been able to use any cell radio internet for 3 weeks because I'm 50MB away from overage charges. Until phones either come with 64GB+ or the Phone Companies up the allotted bandwidth to at least 10GB a month, then external storage will still be necessary. The "Cloud" is useless with current Data Plans and 16-32GB isn't that much storage, especially once you start to consider Nandroids, Titanium Backups, music, a movie or three for a long trip, other roms, pictures, and the list goes on and on.

my 6th moto (cliq, q9h, v80, slvr, c139 prior) and I too agree with build quality, up there with Nokia for me.
I've also owned about 4 blackberry devices before going android and the build quality and reliability was anywhere from terrible to average.

Vote with your dollar! My feelings exactly. I give Samsung their props for continuing support for SDs and giving consumers what they want (incl. removable battery) Seems like everyone these days is going the other route.
Locked storage capacity + free cloud storage, it's all "politics" from my POV really and I'm not going to support it.

I agree that no SD is a big drawback...but cloud is one of the reason why google phones do not have SD. Only nexus 1 was the only nexus phone with a SD card i think! Well,,,thats the way google goes....i dont know if we have any say to it...unless samsung comes up with its own OS...
I was hopeful for the motorola x but after looking the specs and the fact that doesn't have a external SD I am thinking the Sony honami is my next phone.

I try to not get too caught up in the spec war. Look at crapple.....as much as it pains me to say this, they have low specs but they do an excellent job with optimization. So well that they can keep up with some of the new flagship phones.
I think the motoX will deliver a great user experience. And that's what it's all about. I'm not too fond of the no SD card.
I'll still be getting the 32gb model.

For those that came from the galaxy nexus, let me know if you've been happy with the moto x.
I was all set to ditch Verizon and buy the nexus 5. However the nexus 5 has not impressed me as much as I'd have hoped, and my wife is still worried about T-Mobile's service.
What worries me is losing control of my device. I would like to at least have root for backups and tethering. An unlocked bootloader would be nice too.

You're going to love the moto x coming from a gnex I guarantee it. Better screen, much better battery life, way better performance overall, feels good in the hand and the screen size to device ratio is pretty awesome. Its like all screen looking at the front. Verizon actually pushed the first update fairly quick by their standards and there is root now available for the update too. Its not as easy to root/mess around with this phone as the gnex but its not that bad either.
What he said. This phone is leaps and bounds about the GNex. It's one of those things that you're just going to have to try. If you don't like it, just take it back. But I can guarantee that you won't take it back.

If you liked the gnex then you'll love the X.. trust me.

So is the moto x bootloader unlockable and relockable or is the only option the developer version? I'm thinking of sticking with my current plan which would be cheaper than shared data even buying the phone outright.

All are unlockable except att , Verizon and mexico nextel.
Just to clarify, it would be staying on Verizon.

From what I understand the Verizon boot loader is locked. But you can use safestrap to partition up to 3gb and install a custom ROM to the partition. You would then "dual boot" and select to boot to the custom ROM.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I've had the Gnex, GS4, and now the Moto X. All with VZW.
Moto X is the best phone I've ever used.
Get the Dev Ed if you can.
I had the GNex on Verizon and loved it, then I (stupidly) went to T-Mobile and got an HTC One and had nothing but problems from the phone and the carrier, and I'm now happily back on Verizon with the Moto X. I feel confident that I've made the right decision for the next two years. As the others have stated, this phone is monumentally, significantly better than the GNex. Think of it as the GNex 2, where they took all the issues from the GNex, fixed them, and then added a few even more amazing things to really top of the whole experience. You have absolutely NOTHING to worry about if you get this phone. The only thing this phone lacks in relation to the GNex is the unlockable bootloader.
Posted from the comfort of my Moto X.
Pay full retail and get the Dev Edition with unlockable bootloader. Right now you have options for rooting the stock versions, but that may not always be the case, and unlocking the bootloader is the only way to insure complete control over your user experience in the future.
Hashcode and dhacker do brilliant work with SasfeStrap to give stock users options to have limited ROMs but even they will tell you to get a dev device if you can afford it.
New changes in the security in 4.4 KitKat will further complicate rooting and running modified systems on all devices that aren't bootloader unlocked and have custom kernel/boot.img. This is how the intend to segregate the user base into those willing to give up their warranty and take responsibility for managing their devices themselves and normal users. Basically developers and extreme enthusiasts in one group and everyone else in the other group.
^Moto diehard, right here.
You rocking an X, cell?

Well I would but I don't like the looks of the half white half black, and it may cost significantly more.

Yes sir! Well...two actually...I have T-Mobile and the VZW Dev editions.
I also am a current Verizon Galaxy Nexus user and considering the Moto X. I have unlimited data and because of my usage it is in my best interest to pay full retail for the phone (trying to hold out for the wooden backs).
Now when you say that the battery life is better, how much better? What is your screen time to total time ratio?
Any signal issues?
How much has the software update improved the camera?
These are my and I am sure others main issues with the Galaxy Nexus. I loved the form factor, the closet to pure Android we Verizon customers could get. The Moto X appears to be the next best or closet thing Verizon customers can get to another Nexus at this point.
