Hi everyone.
this thread is for anyone like me who bought a flip cover and still want to use a samsung protective cover on it to save the chrome frame of the note II from scratches.
in the attachment there is a speed mockup i did to have a preview of the result.
Actually i am using flip + protective without any mod, but the both-handed use in portrait ain't so confortable because the flip cannot flip itself on the backcover but just get a 90 degrees angle before stopping when the protective cover edge oppose resistence. Now i'm studying the right approach to operate the easy way and with no errors to cut the left side and make the flip cover flip again on the back with a protective cover on it though.
I was surprised that no one posted a thread like this, because imho the official protective + flip cover combo is the most elegant way to use the phone with no regrets on where you put it or how you put etc. I'm looking for any suggest and would like to share this experience with other users who are in this case
NOW THAT is imaginative! Im sooo doing this!
Good choice, if u gonna try please report us with pics. That would be awesome
I am scared that after the cut the resulting edges would be too sharp and look some of crappy handmade. I doubt that is not necessary to cut all the entire height of the grey bumper from the left side to obtain usability on portrait, maybe just a few millimetres and the flip will regain his full rotation. I don't know how the white edge of the protective cover will look like after the cut, if we suppose to cut all the grey bumper for a more balanced resulting design.

This is the best way to go. Thanks for the idea. So basically do you have to get both samsung made flip cover and a samsung made protective cover for this to work right or do you think other flip covers and protective covers would work? Waiting on my note II as we speak! I need this combo!
I only tried with samsung genuine protective plus flip cover, this concept may fit also with other producers' accessories but it depends on their thickness and dynamics

Genius! Too bad I returned the flip cover when my protective cover arrived. It looks good but I'll see how well the Ebay flip cover case fits before I go and buy a Samsung flip cover again to do the mods.
Any particular bumper/silicon case?..........or just the cheapest going off ebay? My GN2 and flip case haven't arrived yet but I'll be doing this mod straight away

Sorry, I hadn't read the original post correctly.....I thought the genuine flip case was also the 'protective cover' - just different names for it. Hadn't realised this mod was a hybrid of two different genuine cases. I saw the grey bumper and thought that was cut from a cheapo none branded silicone case.
Can you explain what the rear of the GN2 looks like then? I haven't seen this protective cover yet and none of the photos show the back.....I'm trying to imagine whether it's only the bumper that is cut from the protective cover or whether that makes up the rear of the modified case. Thanks in advance.
The samsung protective cover for gn2 is made of two materials, the back is exactly the same white material of the original backcover, with the same look, and the gray bumper is a soft gum. I highly suggest this cover, it follows the same feel and design of the n7100.

OMG Thank you so much!
This is EXACTLY what I wanted! I'm going to combine this with a flygrip and I will be all set!
I tried asking on another thread if anyone knew if a bumper case could fit over my flip case but never got any responses...
I would have been afraid to be the first one to try but now that I see that it can work I can't wait to do it!
Off to the Samsung website for the 50% off coupon and the black protective case!
Thank You Again!!!
I have done exactly the same thing with the original note 1

Great Idea
Here is my take on this great idea - I found that after I cut the side, doing some light sanding made for a much smoother and nicer finish along the hard white plastic edge. Also to smooth out the grey bumper edges that I cut - I heated up a butter knife (not too hot) and lightly pressed it up against the edges and made for a much smoother cut edge (does not look like it was cut with exacto knife)
Looks great!

Hi,
Did you remove all the gray soft plastic? I left about a mm because it masks better. Is it that that you smooth?
d.
Thats probably the best case (combo) ive ever seens. A couple of questions.
Please provide links for where you got both.
Dont you find it an inconvenience to flip it everytime you want to use the phone?
If the phone was in freefall would the flip become flappy and the phone drop on its screen?

I've just ordered a genuine back plate and flip cover. Lets see how this goes.
Also are you guys using a screen protector? If so does the case lift it off?
Yes, if you look at the outside of the case - all of the grey is removed, there is still a tiny amount of residual grey on the inside surface of the white plastic. I sanded down the hard white plastic edge.

Kind of expensive but I got the flip cover from the local sprint store $40 (that is the only place that i could find one) Even tho my phone is the T-Mo variant, the sprint one still fits. And I got the white plastic case from newegg $22.
I dont think that it is a bother to flip open the case - I kind of like it actually
In theory it could drop on the screen or something could drop on the screen but I also put on a screen cover - i guess my phone can survive most scenarios

Any ideas? The back of the phone gets very slippery and I hate cases so I'm not going to get one, so do you guys have any ideas on how to add some grip to the back?
skateboard grip tape.
There are leather back covers on ebay but without NFC. I can do without NFC, so I'm planning to buy one.

Try a full body skin. I had a carbon fiber one that added some grip, but removed it. ...I didn't like the carbon fiber around the edges of the phone. I'm currently using the Spigen Matte full body skin. It adds some grip on my opinion, butsome may say it didn't add enough. Just my pinion of course.

First thing I do to any new phone (or laptop) is throw a couple egrip strips on the back... incredible traction...nothing slimmer...never need a case cause it doesnt slip out of your hands!
www.egrips.com
until i found a case i liked, i applied a generic, large, clear Zagg screen protector to the battery cover. i had to use 2 pieces and it was not an exact fit, but there was enough coverage to make it less slippery.
Try using flygrip
Just Google and YouTube "flygrip galaxy note 2".
I've been using this thing for almost a week now on my note 2. It's amazing.
flygrip is to big and doesn't allow the use of a case if needed. Great idea but dumb product for $30

I used spray on tool grip in clear applied to the back cover. After 5-6 coats its very tacky/grippy and almost invisible. Best thing I've done to the phone yet.
Because of my limited number of posts I'm not allowed to include a link. The company/brand is PLAST-DIP. You'll be looking for the Clear in a spray can. If you'd like to get creative they also offer an assortment of colors and "smokes" that make a translucent effect.
Hope that helps!

Does this type of spray grip tend to peel or scale easily with everyday usage? I was thinking of something to add more grip to my otterbox commuter case which tends to be on the slippery side. Is it easily removeable if needed and does it attract lint/dirt/etc?

I'm looking for a case with great protection like the gumdrop/active case.
I dont want to have to use the "thick" screen protector that comes with those cases, I want to use a "flap" so that when I'm not using it I close it, and when I want to use it I get the "real" screen.
I know there hard cases with a closing flap but I want the protection of the thicker/softer rubber. I know the active case has a "lid", but I want it to be like a smartcover.
However I don't want a briefcase like the pelican.
I can't be the first person to be searching for a product like this?
Thanx!

Yes I saw that guide but I am really loking for a bit more protection than the original cover.
Would also like to be able to Lock it in place so that it doesn't open in my backpack!
Also from the looks of it, the gumdrop/active case will keep there shape and not start losing there shape after being broken in!
Strange, I would thought that this is what most people would want to have?
The Speck FitFolio has great protection and the top flap latches securely.

Yes that looks like a good one, but not sure how much the hard plastic will help against a corner landning...
There's a thread here somewhere with someone making the case you want out of two others. A tpu case and the flap from one like the speck.
What about the book-like cases mentioned in some of the threads here? Where the tablet gets mounted in a wooden frame (these all seem to be eco friendly) and the "book cover" part is cloth (covered cardboard I'd guess keeping with the eco friendly theme) that acts just like a flap that you're looking for.

Hi
Some pictures of my new Case Mate Tough modded with the Samsung flip cover.
The Case Mate Tough is very tight on the GN2 and it wasn't so easy to make because of the thickness of the flip battery cover.
I hope to have now all the avantages of the Tough (good impact protection, easy to hold and secure grip in a slim case) combined with the flip cover.

Looks like a good mod. What other things did you have to do with the tough case to fit with the larger battery cover of the flip case?
Also, does the flip cover sit flush all around with the raised lip of the tough case (when closed)? Can you post a pic of the power-button side to show it? Thanks.

To fit the case with the larger battery cover, I had to cut out the inner part of the tough case as on the joined picture.
The polycarbonate hard shell is very strong and I cut it with a dremel.
The flip cover sits flush all around with the raised lip of the tough case as you can see.

flip cases with a magnet on the side or in the flap shouldn't be a problem.
the only real issue is with cases that use a strong magnet behind the screen.
They are a little pricey but the offer great protection.

I had a flip case with magnet in the side. Found that the Pen wouldnt work on that side - Not by much - maybe 1 CM semi circle from the center of the Magnet around the screen.
So I removed it with a scalpel, took a little while since it was glued in but once removed all worked well expect that the case wouldnt hold shut which honestly was no big issue.
I can see clearly, now the Orzly is on! (Video Included)
There is nothing worse than getting your fresh new phone and knowing that you have to cover up the beautiful thing with some hefty, bulky case. I personally hate it because it hides the beautiful new design. Therefore, I have searched high and low for cases that give me the protection without actually hiding the phone. I have tried numerous cases, and they all met below my expectations, now maybe I’m to picky or maybe there isn’t a case out there that does this for me, maybe I should live on the wild side and just not have a case! That seemed a little drastic, so I continued searching and came a across a case which I have not really seen before. The case is called,
**Drum roll please**
**Pause for dramatic effect**
Orzly Fusion Bumper Case!! (Cheers & clapping)
After finding this case, I could not believe my eyes, finally a case which does not hide the beauty of my new G4. It has a clear back, which will save my device from the eternal war of key scratching in the battlefield that is my pocket. It also, has a nice bumper thing around the edges, which will give me that much needed protection from everyday little bumps and knocks. Also it will give me some added grip while taking the phone in and out of my pockets, as well as when I’m a little bit heavy handed with my phone after a long day at work.
So I purchased the case from the Amazon.com website, as this was the only place I could find it, I looked on other outlets but as the phone is so new (not even out in most parts of the world). It arrived in the morning I knew I could revel in my glory; I came home from work and noticed a package on the floor. Upon opening the package, I could see that my case had arrived. Anyway, I quickly opened the package and before I knew it I placed my phone inside, the case was a very tight fit, but I think this is a good thing, I hate when cases loose their shape after time or come off too easily!
After that, I inspected the orzly case and noticed that all the buttons were accessible, well that and there are not any buttons on the side so this was not really a big danger. In addition, I inspected where my trusty charger and headphone ports where, and to my relief these were accessible. I also like that around the headphone port there is enough room for my DJ headphones. They have a slight bigger plastic around the jack and so this was a big plus for me, I mean I do not mind the smaller headphones, but when I am travelling on trains or planes for work, I like to use these as they a by far more comfortable.
So overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase, finding my perfect case has been an experience. On that note, I shall end my small story with a few words of the great Neil Armstrong.
Neil Armstrong
“This is one small step for man and one giant leap for mankind”

Haha I found your review of that quite amusing! Never have I heard someone so passionate about a case for their phone. I like the fusion too especially for the LG G4, perfect to protect the leather back but you can still see it. I've been reading the leather scuffs quite a bit so protection like this is need IMO. I am still holding out for a true bumper case or edge guard so I can put tons of scratches, dents, water spots, etc. on the leather. That real minimal one with the corner clamp from china seems shady, but it's a start for $4.
And I'm looking at my wallet and I love the look of it after being smoothed out and beat up after a year in my back pocket.
First thing I do though is I'm going to spray it down real well with a water seal and conditioner you'd use for nice leather shoes to give some resistance to stains.
I never actually thought about using water seal and conditioner on my wallet or leather back, it does make sense now that you say it.

After a couple weeks of use, IMHO you should AVOID this case.
It gets easily scratched -no rough treatment received- with lots of tiny marks and smudges, it's really hard to remove when using the leather back, it doesn't have double layering or cushioning on the corners.
It's hard to appreciate the small scratches in pictures unless you reflect some light:
Plus, it leaves cutout markings on the leather back cover:
Seriously disappointed. I'm getting a Spigen or Ringke next.
I think any transparent case is going to have issues of getting the micro scratches on the back. It's also not the greatest in taking on and off with the leather back for sure. I surprisingly don't have any issues taking my UAG case on and off with my leather back.
