[Q] Mount and Restore problem in the latest kernel..( final edition) - Galaxy Ace S5830i General

hi,
i flashed t Rafaels latest kernel version (201210312042). i flashed the format ext4 file over it (My sd partition in fat32 and EXT3). i changed the file names as mentioned to ext4 as mentioned in the thread. but still cannnot restore my backup and the whenever i try to do so...i manage to soft brick my phone.
Another thing, when i go to cwm recovery to flash something .....it shows an error that says cant open cache and cant mount error in CWM recovery. i think few others are also facing such a problem........please let me know what should i do to correct this error?.... i just cant reflash my phone all the time as the restore thing is not working as it should.
Even my Headphones are not working :banghead:
P.S.- All respect to rafael for making a kernel for us....giving us frequent updates to make it run smoothly. :good:

I think u'll have to reflash firmware via odin

recovery not working for Samsung Galaxy ace

When i flash the stock rom using odin, the stock recovery works. but then, when i update the CWM to any version, the recovery stops working.
It stops on the samsung galaxy ace screen which is the 2nd screen, with a small yellow dot on top left. i am not able to flash any rom. i have even tried using d CWM app, but it stops at d same screen.
pls help.
Note: the download mode and the stock rom works perfectly.
Any solutions to this problem guys!!!

Check that cwm you are using is for galaxy ace.
If is for ace still not working then Try latest CWM version..

This problem is caused by updating recovery to 6.0 by Shaan.
Noticed that this problem is not just for me. It's widespread now. Next try would be to flash recovery gamma tar from odin.

i tried flashing recovery gamma tar using odin, but again the same problem.
it flashed perfectly using odin but on trying to go d recovery mode, it gets stuck on d galaxy ace screen.
i think my phone's recovery files have been corrupted.
Is there any way in which i can add a new recovery file or something like that??

Heyyyy Rishal try the cwm-recovery-ace.tar.md5 file from this thread. Flash from odin
Tried.. But still no result.. Same problem..

Flashing through odin deletes every single file on your phone. So there is no chance that CWM 6 causes this. Also i don't think the problem is widespread!
If you can get me a logcat and dmesg i might be able to help..

Sorry if my post ever offended you. It's just because the whole issue started after flashing cwm6. Im glad you are happy to help. During which process do i need to get a logcat? While booting into recovery?(haven't tried getting a logcat of a boot process before)
Yes. Flash the recovery. Boot to recovery and grab a logcat as well as a dmesg.
Pastebin both. And don't worry. I don't get offended easily!

Hey Rishal flash stock recovery from this thread
And bring the zip for cwm 6 tomorrow.PLS
i flashed CWM 5 using odin, but that also gave the same problem.
Is there any stock recovery that i can flash using "odin"?
Aditya: u gave d link of stock recovery which has to be flashed using other recovery modes, which is not possible in my case as the other recovery modes r not working.

Its not possible to delete files directly inside a .tar file.
i have to extract the recovery.img and then change it to .tar file.
i flashed that file using odin but it stopped suddenly giving me a yellow triangle error because of which i had to reflash again.
now i have the stock recovery working again.
I am facing a similar issue. Please do post your solution here if anything at all works
That wasn't the right way to do it. Download total commander and then remove other files from stock rom.tar file WITHOUT EXTRACTING. Did u renamed the recovery.img to recovery.tar and then flashed as one file in Odin???
Another way is to push recovery.img through adb.

Could you please elaborate the problem you face and how it all started in the first place?
Since we were facing constant reboot into recovery problem, we flashed stock Rom entirely through Odin to get back stock recovery. However flashing any version of cwm would make the problem resurface. The only cwm recovery that works is cwm6 by shaan. Confused why??

Since the CWM 6 by shaan is working, i tried to install a zip through it. the zip was successfully.
but on switching on the phone, it gets stuck on cynogenmod screen(not the samsung screen)
The reason is that i cannot wipe data/cache.
on doing a factory reset, the log is something like:
Error mounting /data!
Skipping format...
Error mounting /cache!
Skipping format...
E:format_volume: make_extf4fs fa(the next thing is out of the screen) ...block/mmcblk0p2
formatting /sdcard/ .android_secure (something-something)
Data wipe complete
So this means that there is some problem with the cache, data mounting..
I also tried to mount cache and data using mounts and storage but it shows cannot mount cache and data respectively.
P.S.: Every time i get into recovery or flash something an error like this comes at the bottom:
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log...(can't see the next part)
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log...(can't see the next part)
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/las...(can't see the next part)
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/las...(can't see the next part)
So there is some recovery file in the /cache folder which is causing some problem
(recovery working is a progress. thanks adityabhagat95.)

My phone was running 2.2.1 Froyo. I tried to upgrade it to 2.3.6 using process mentioned here. http://androidadvices.com/update-galaxy-ace-s5830-official-gingerbread-236-xwktm-firmware/
The Odin completed successfully and restarted the phone. But the phone was running spanish language. I was getting an alert after every 3-4 seconds. But i could not read it as it was spanish. I restarted the phone and it went in boot loop. The phone keeps rebooting every 2 seconds.
I can't get into recovery mode but I can get to download mode.
I have tried flashing many ROMs from sammobile.com but none of them is working.

Flashing a STOCK Rom from Odin must not cause a bootloop. Reflash the stock Rom from recovery (again )and then reboot into STOCK recovery to wipe data ( factory reset or whatever its addressed as).
Yes I can reboot into recovery, but I dont think the problem is solved or else the other recoveries would also work (its just a progress)
I tried to format data, cache, system but all of them failed as it was unable to "mount" the respective folders.
I did not try d format sd-ext, as I thought it was not required...
There is surely some problem with d cache, data or system files...

[Q] camera not working galaxy note

Yes I know I am a NOOB at 46 but I still can't resist messin with **** that isn't broken. Loved the NOOB video.
The probem is I think I flashed a dodgey ROM app and got scared half way through and tried to reset the phone to factory.
This is my Galaxy Note GT n7000. I have done a factory reset 3 times and believe I am well on my way to bricking my phone if I do this again.
All is good so far except the CAMERA.
I have downloaded the necessary HOTFILE STOCK ROM for NZ from your site but am now scared ****less to flash it.
Should I just give it back to the manufacturer and say DUH I DONT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED and let them fix it
I also have GINGER BREAD 2.3.6 ROM Should I just flash this and hope for a fix
I also have ICS 4.0.4 XXLRG Should I Flash this after 2.3.6
Just need a little help and direction, as this is all quite new to me. Yes I'm sure this has all been done before and as I yell at my kids for doin stupid **** you deserve the same latitude.
Cheers ****
flash gb first.. after flashing the gb do a factory reset and then check your camera if it's working or not.. if you got lucky and got it working then flash a ics otherwise take it to manufacturer for repair.. don't mess up when you don't know what you are doing
Ps: if everything goes well and you flashed a ics rom then please flash a modified stock kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191

Thanks for your reply, but if you look at the other reply it says to flash ics and NOT to do a FACTORY reset and you say to do the factory reset what is the risk of doing the factory reset
Not to sure which version of PHILZ modified Kernel to use Can you help with this
If you choose GB, it's safe. But ICS kernels have a bug which can brick the phone if a factory wipe is made. What abhinav said was to do a wipe in GB. Which is safe. What I told you was you can directly install the ICS rom but refrain from wiping till you install a safe kernel.
Go to OAD forum of note and you will see Philz thread. Download any ICS kernel like DDLRB and place on external SD. Then boot in to recovery and choose "apply update from external storage". Choose the zip file you downloaded. Once done boot into recovery again. Yubwill have Cwm. Now you have a safe kernel. You can do a factory wipe.

Thank you for your help. I have fixed the camera with the GB update and went on to update ICS XXLRG, but this still isnt CwM.
Im not sure which Cwm to use There is an XXLSC-XJB which is close. Should I use this one or does it matter
. PhilZ files were unavailable for download as well is there another place to get this file and what is the easiest method to install
Choose as per your rom build number.

My wuild number after flashing ICS is IMM76D.XXLRG but nothing is the same the clsing osest on Philz is XXLSC XJB
Could I flash this using ODIN from my laptop?
Thanks
PS where is the thank you button for my responses I like to say thanks but cant seem to find where
You have an ICS rom. You can use any ICS kernel by Philz. Use xxlrt or ddlrb
Flashing via odin will increase the counter and yellow triangle at boot. Best is to flash via recovery. Place the zip version of the kernel on ext sd card and boot into recovery

Thanks again
I used modified ICS kernel PhilZ cwm6 XXLRG DBT 3.99 signed zip version but when I boot from SD it stops and says that it can't verify the signature and wont install
Do I need and unzip app? If I install this update will I have root access to run apps like Titanium Backup?
Or should I use the tar file in ODIN?
I do appreciate all your time and effort
What option did you select in recovery?
This is what you need to follow
1. Download the signed zip version of the kernel and place in external sd.
2. Boot into recovery and choose "apply update from external storage".
3. Choose the file you downloaded.
4. It will do the magic.
This will give you root access and yes apps like TB can be used. Also you will get CWM and it's a safe kernel too.
Dude he has done everything correct i know.. The v.3.99 of ics kernels are not built correctly when you flash them in stock ics recovery they always give a verification failed error.. But the older versions are ok to be flashed in stock ics recovery
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
I just flashed the ddlrb 3.99 and worked just fine. Where did you get this info?
Use the tar method only if u are confident enough
And yes you will be able to run applications like titanium backup
And for the flash counter just use triangle away
Search Google for it
All is well that ends well

Flashing stock firmware with Odin will not delete your data from SD card. You will probably need to do factory reset, it will delete your contacts, sms, apps... But stuff from internal and external sd will remain there.
You bricked it because 4.4.2 uses preload partition for a swap, and it is partitioned in different way. And on PA 3.69 is probably different.
Or ROM zip of PA was corrupted.
thankyou and one more question

You can't brick phone with clearing cache. Did you wipe system partition? Try to install same ROM that you had (if you had).
Give us a screenshot of Odin fail. What exactly happen. And what is the full name of md5 that you put in pda of Odin. Try different version of Odin too.

Ofcourse you shouldn't wipe system partition, system files are there...
And if you can't install ROM again, what error do you get in Odin?

What happened and what makes you think it's a PIT problem? Repartitioning a phone should always be the last option.

I've tried Philz, CWM and TWRP(which i normally use) the same problem with all recoveries.
what recovery are you using?
try flashing with odin 3.09 twrp 2.8.5.0 official .tar file.
then try any custom rom.
if your partition table would be messed up i belive your phone would be bricked.

I suspect /system has become R/O (Read Only) So i cant install anything.

You may take a look here (without any warranties):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...fo-i9305-pit-file-flash-analysis-pit-t1950591
From my perspective: If you are still able to flash a working stock rom then the partition table most likely is ok.
Tried that. Didn't help. When I flash a ROM i check /system and it's empty. No matter what ROM, no matter which recovery
I don't think it's the PIT now. /system seems to be read only. How do I change the permissions via ADB?

Just wanted to say: I have the same issue now. It's not that critical as I have long moved on from this phone and only experiment, but same behavior here. Have tried many things to no avail (recoveries, ROMs, stock firmwares, etc.).

Anyway here's what i've been trying:
Recoveries: PhilZ, CWM, TWRP
Custom ROMS: well amost all there are...
Stock ROM
Tried repartitioning with PIT
Erasing NAND
I checked the permissions on /system and they are as they should be
I fixed it (not really sure how) ... i ran stock for a while and decided to try again. This time with CWM. Now all is good and i'm back on NAMELESS :good:

Fine, welcome back to the modern world! ☺
But it's sad that you can't tell what fixed the situation. Would have been good to know.

1. Flashed 4.4.4 nordic version of stock (I9305XXUFNL1_I9305DNFFOB1_I9305XXUFOA1) in ODIN, and let it complete with its setup-wizards and so forth
2. Flashed clockworkmod for i9305 (v. 6.0.4.5) via ODIN
3. I flashed nameless nightly 09.07.2015 in cwm and booted it (without gapps)
4. Rebooted back to recovery and installed tk-gapps.
5. Well everything works
BUT before i did that i did all kinds of stuff, like repartitioning with a PIT file and erased NAND in ODIN.
Not sure if the repartitioning and NAND erasure had anything to do with the success.
I still get the "unmount of /system failed no such volume" when flashing in CWM. But the difference between before and now, is that it actually puts stuff in the /system dir It didn't before. I'm too scared now to change the recovery, although i prefer TWRP. So i'll let CWM be.

Will try this procedure and report back. I think this should be moved to Q&A, though.
Edit:
Using CWM I was able to flash and boot NamelessROM, as well.
