Anyone able to get google books app running on NC. I have a rooted NC and am able to install app from market but when it runs it opens briefly then closes. Any experience or suggestions?

Make sure you have an SD Card in
The fix for this was bizarre and rather humorous.
I'd been using the SD out of my HTC hero to root my NC because I couldn't locate where I'd stored my older microSDs.
This of course meant I was promptly removing the card from the NC once done and resetting it back to usable fashion for my phone.
Each time I tried to install/run Google Books it would not load just like you.
Ran into another app Zedge that did same thing, and discovered it complaining about needing an sdcard inserted.
Sure enough, I put my SD back in and like a charm, Google Books and Zedge were both able to run.
Later I removed card from the NC and went back into Books. It still loaded, but gave me a popup about where to store files. I was then able to point it to store internal storage and been fine ever since.
Zedge however, WILL NOT work if there is not an external sd card inserted still.

thanks, would not have figured that out for my self.
How to even get the program?
I'm running into a different problem, which is that Google won't even let me *try* to install Google Books for Android. If I search from the marketplace there's no result, if I search from my PC it tells me the nook color isn't compatible, and if I search from the web on the nook the dowload button tells me the requested item could not be found.
(I know this is a gravedig, but the nice video said to post in a similar thread if possible, I hope I'm doing it right).
Edit: CM7 nightly (6/18) is my rooted software.
I have Google Books working just fine on my NC running the latest CM7 nightly.
I have a different question regarding Google Books... does anyone use this app as their primary ebook application? I like the idea of it syncing your last read page in their "cloud," so that I can easily pick up where I left off either on my NC, my Android phone or on their website. I'm not thrilled with either the NOOK app or the Amazon Kindle app and the Aldiko app is okay, just curious if anyone has made Google Books their primary ebook application.
Thanks.
I have no problem running Google Books. I do have a problem with the feature set. You can read books in landscape mode on an iPhone and IPad but not 2.X Android.
I decided to save a few $ since I found a google book $4 cheaper than an Amazon Kindle version. This was a mistake as it was not in epub format but was a scanned book (source 7 x 9 Paperback) in PDF format.
I noticed on the google site they do disclose that it is "Better for larger screens.". As I purchased on a third party site, I did not see that notice. However, I probably would have bought anyway as I would have assumed my nook screen was much larger than an Android phone screen. Without a workable zoom/landscape mode and word wrap, it is not readable on my Nook. I can only read the book on my laptop. I was very disappointed.
Give ezPDF a try.
Rodney
Anybody notice that the Nook is now listed as an incompatible device on https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.apps.books&feature=search_result, and Books no longer shows up in the Market on the Nook.
Is this B&N shaking things up?

Sure, going to have to do that now for Netflix anyways, but the question is WHY is Google+B&N doing this now all of a sudden?
Is this the tip of more stuff getting shut out of NC?

Thought Google Books gives you TWO views for one book, scanned and machine (OCR). Did you check the menu to see if it gives you an alternative view?
Many times, I prefer the scanned view because it maintains the original book art and formatting vs OCR that strips and neuters everything.

i would assume it so they can continue to sell B&N only approved stuff to people not in the know
Hi all,
New Kindle owner here, and a very resourceful Android/iOS nerd.
My question is simple-- has anyone had success in cloning the built-in "Amazon Kindle" system app?
I'm looking to use multiple Kindle accounts. One is my US account (Prime account; where I have most of my audiobooks) and one is my JP account (where I have most of my Kindle books).
From what I recall on my TF300T tablet, the Google Play store edition of this app takes your Amazon login directly from the main screen when you first open it. In contrast, the Amazon Kindle system app on Fire devices takes your login from the account you use in Amazon's version of the Settings app.
I've tried using an app from the Play Store called "App Cloner" and have purchased the full version. I tried cloning the "Amazon Kindle" app twice with different configurations, but have not played with it much more. Most I've tried is removing permissions from it, in an effort to block it from automatically taking my US login from Settings.
I'm afraid that the remedy to this may be to download the Play Store version and clone that one instead. Problem is I lost my TF300T, and the Play Store on my Kindle reports it's already installed. (Interestingly enough, Google Play doesn't recognize Audible as already installed-- making a second copy of Audible easy to obtain)
Anyone have luck with this? Would love to figure out how to make this possible and write up a guide for it.
I'd like to know this too. I bought a kindle on someone elses amazon account so their account came attached. I removed it, but then that family member asked to read their kindle on my fire. So I couldn't add the account back for 6 months. So I was hoping to just remove the default one and add the regular version from the play store but it doesn't function for some reason. I would love to be able to log into a different kindle account just for the book store. I've had a bad time switching ROM and had to get a new one so I'd like to just avoid changing the OS for now.
Well, I have some good news and bad news regarding the subject. But, overall I would say it's progress none the less.
I *DID* find my TF300T, so I was able to download the Play Store version of the Kindle app and successfully clone it. I also managed to successfully install the cloned app. Unfortunately this is as far as I got.
When I launch the cloned app, the splash screen loads very briefly and the app crashes. I will test installing the cloned app on my TF300T and see if it opens cleanly on that device.
If it works on the TF300T, then there is something on the Fire 7" that prevents the clone (or even just the stock app) from operating correctly. I will post back (or edit my post) with my findings.
Don't want to get into Amazon pocket, so I don't want to register just installed Playstore and ready to go cz' no root. Anyway, I can copy in the books and read fine if opened from ES explorer, but once got into the Kindle Library, it asked to register.
Is there a way to use it without registering with Amazon? I want the .awz3 reading which I found almost non readers on PlayStore.
You (probably) won't find any awz3 reader on Play because it's Amazon's version of of the mobi ebook format with DRM. There are programs that will, ummm... "convert" awz3.
I wonder how are you going to get awz3 ebooks without an Amazon account, but you seem to already have some.
I believe your best option is to stop using the Kindle Library app altogether and install another eBook reader. Convert those awz3 files and stay away from awz3's proprietary format from then on.
After a long search, I found: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.geometerplus.zlibrary.ui.android
which can read azw books, but the layout seems to change a little. I may need to continue finding more.
Sorry but I'm a total newbie with Kindle Fire tablets. I got my daughter this for Christmas and was setting it up for her so it's ready to go.
It never even crossed my mind that YouTube kids wouldn't be available. Now that I know it isn't, I'm hoping there is a way I can side load it. I uploaded the apk to Amazon Drive, downloaded it to the fire and it says it needs Google services.
Any help is really appreciated!

Worked flawlessly. THANKS!
I was able to install the Google play store and install KidsYoutube, but i can't add it to the FreeTime account because it doesn't come up in the app list under managed apps. Any advice? I assume this is a permissions issue because other apps (including the google play store) don't come up either, only apps downloaded through the Amazon AppStore
Yes, I am also interested in trying to get google apps over to the freetime kids side. Is there a way to force it over or bypass the permissions issue? My daughter loves the kids tablet and it works beautifully but she still steals my phone for youtube kids which is the best standalone kids app out there. She loves it and cant have it on the freetime side of the tablet.

Any luck on this? I want to get YouTube kids on my daughter's 5th gen and this news makes me sad
How old are your kids?
I have a 4 and a 6yo boys, who both have a Kindle kid edition since Christmas 2015. When I first turned them on, I was extremely disappointed that the entire tablet was Amazon centered. Of course a quick look at XDA and both tablets were rooted running CM12 within minutes.
We of course did lose the whole "freetime" interface, which has only 12 months of free content, but figured that it would teach them Android, and maybe even make them smarter. Between Netflix, Youtube and youtube kids there was no real loss in not having freetime installed.
In order to block content, simply install Nova launcher, and hide apps that aren't kids related, and setup the home screen to be kid friendly (bigger icons, no google search bar, home button to open app drawer etc).
Now I can tell you that my 6yo totally mastered Android, creates app shortcuts, change backgrounds, downloads games etc. My 4yo can navigate Android comfortably, start apps he likes, search for videos on YTK and Netflix.
I feel that it challenged them to learn the OS as is, without sheltering them in a tailored made easy kid interface.
Possible solution found

I found this today. I wont have time to test it out until tomorrow though because my daughter and her tablet are at the ex's today. If you try it and it works let me know.

Long story short, it works! The parts they don't tell you, you'll need to also install all the google services on the freetime side to get the app to work. I figured that out after 10 minutes of waiting for that to update (i have it installed on the main account as well that's why i didn't put 2 and 2 together right away). I used the same method that was linked earlier in this thread.
After I got YT Kids setup on my freetime side I ran into an issue of not letting me sign in to my account. The screen would come up to add account, but then would go right back into the app. To get around this I also installed google play store on the freetime side. once that was logged in YT kids linked and it was done.
To install all that extra crap, use the same method as you will to install the YT Kids app.
It's not a pretty solution, but it works!

Take the 4 apk files (the google framework and playstore) and put them on the root of the sd card. Use a computer to do that. When I was trying to copy from internal memory to sd card i kept getting errors.
Once the 4 files are on the root of sd card, shove it back in the tablet, then go into freetime, launch the file explorer that's recommended in the walkthrough and install each one.
You may need to wait after first boot like 10 minutes for whatever apps you have installed on that sd card to rebuild. That happened to me when i put the sd card in, even though the tablet was off

Actually just registered finally so I could reply to this. I wrestled with this a bunch over Christmas - the key to doing this is an app in the Amazon Kindle App Store called GoToApp (I used the free demo version). Since it is in said store, you can assign it to your child account via the Freetime app on the parent side. I also also temporarily added a file manager to the child account as well - I used ES File Manager, which is also free and in Amazon's App Store, though I believe any file manager would work. Since they are now assigned to your child account, they should show up on the carousel in FreeTime mode like any other app . I then loaded the 4 APK files needed for Google Play and the YouTube kids APK onto an SD card. You then go into the child account and install the apps, using the file manager to get into the SD card. Once done, go into GoToApp - this app is essentially a launcher, and you can add YouTube Kids into it and let them launch the YouTube Kids App from within GoToApp. Both my older and younger sons very quickly learned that essentially GoToApp's icon = YouTube now.
A few other notes on this, however- if your kid is smart, they can use GoToApp for other things. I had manually installed a file manager and he figured out how to unhide it in GoToApp and then went to town. For my 3-year-old this was obviously a non-issue, and it has worked fine for him.
Also, the YouTube Kids app is very, very finicky when trying to get it installed. I found a specific version that worked when nothing else did. I don't know that version off hand, but can dig it up later if needed. I essentially just kept going back versions via APKMirror until I found one that worked (though once installed I never have had to update it, and it still works fine). I also found that installing the Play framework seemed to work best if I installed it only on the kid account and not the parent account - one tablet I had installed it on my account first, and then probably wiped it a dozen times overall before it worked decently. Only installing it on the parent account would give errors when it was then run via the kid account, and I had problems when I installed it on both. Once I figured out the way to do it, the other tablet was fine; I didn't have any problem with that tablet.
In the end, though, I ended up reverting back to a normal kid account for the older child - the combination of the backdoor combined with a lessened amount of parental controls led to him getting a little too into it some nights. I think that both of those issues are really more my fault more than anything else, especially the latter. What we did end up doing was putting YouTube Kids in the parent account and locking down as much as we could (can't open the Play Store or Settings without a PIN and so forth), and he now has to ask to watch (instead of being let loose with it) and is at least semi-supervised now. This also let me take better advantage of the FreeTime controls. On the other hand, the younger one still has this GoToApp setup 9 months later, and it has worked well for him with no problems to speak of.
Anyway, novel of a post, but if rather have someone learn from the mistakes I made and not have to put hours into it like I did.
EDIT: For some reason I thought that the above comment was second-to-last without any reply to it. Oh well, hopefully this helps someone.

Might try Google Play Services 10.2.98 (230-146496160) instead - this is, I believe, the version I installed on my kids' tablets (one 2015 Kindle Fire 7" and one late 2016 Kindle Fire HD 8", if memory serves). I actually just did a wipe/reinstall on the HD tablet last week and the same file worked for me on the parent side at least (didn't reinstall on the kid account though).
Safe Vision app is similar to YouTube Kids
You can try Safe Vision app which is similar to YouTube Kids. Just search for 'Safe Vision' on Amazon App Store.
Disclosure: I am developer of this app.
My children both have a fire 7" 5th gen that is fully up to date. At the moment they both have that childrens profile and I wanted to do away with that and start using family app link. So as it stands the default profile with my name exist and the unpaid freetime one for them. I would like to convert the profile they have to a normal one but can't seem to figure out how so I have them use mine under this setup. I don't personally mind this because I put the parental controls in place and remove everything but the amazon apps, I would rather it not say my name on their tablet if its easy to setup and I am just not understanding.
I also have a hd10 that is mine and was able to install google play on it and get 2 accounts that are mine working in just 1 profile but that was maybe 2 months ago. My current issue is that with the links on the guide to install google play when I log in to the google services I could not use my daughters account and was told the version was not high enough. I sign in under mine wait a few minutes everything is up to date now and when I attempt to click add account it just throws me to the apps screen, manage does the same thing. I am certain when I setup the 10 3 weeks ago this was not the case I clicked add account and it worked without issue.
Any help on this will be greatly appreciated, my children will not stop begging me to install minecraft, and I do not want to buy it from the amazon app store.
Also I would gladly root it and install a custom OS but from reading it looks like that is out of the question on this version.
My kids are driving me nuts, hopefully someone has some kind of suggestion I can give a shot. I really don't want to have to buy another type of tablet.
