Okay, So I ordered my phone from amazon, It came stock 2.1 eclair, I read the instructions for flashing any rom from stock, well, when i went to put my phone into download mode, it wouldnt do anything, just charge or turn on, so I thought, ehhhh I dont need odin, and downloaded some outdated CWM, the one with green text, and flashed, REMICS-JB. Yes, I know how stupid this was -.- but I did a nandroid hoping if anything went wrong, I could just restore, well now I cannot get into dl mode nor recovery, ACTUALLY I dont know what I did, but it go into recovery mode, and it looked as if it was the lastest, sephamore 6.5 some stuff like that, and tried to restore my nandroid, nothing... so I thought well maybe I can flash REMICS again and it will actually work, NOT, so now Im stuck, Ordered a jig from amazon, stupid Hurricane sandy is messing up my order blah blah blah, Is there anything I can do? Ive tried every trick in the book, looked allllllll over the captivate forums, search everything. And when I try to hold both vol- and vol + plug usb, I getb a circle of white dashes like its about to charge and just freezes, but if I plug into a wall charger, it gives me some weird white charging instead of the orginal green. If ANYONE can help me, or tell me how I got into that sephamore recovery because I dont have a clue on how I did it. Id be so appreciative. Sorry if this is in the wrong thread blah blah, Im new and Just need help, Please and thank you.....:crying:
Using Odin can be frustrating but very effective. When using Odin you should make sure you have your captivate drivers installed in your computer, disable your anti-virus and turn off firewall, if you have any other programs like itunes or htc sync it can prevent the program from running right as well. Make sure you run as administrator and make sure your sim card and micro sd card are out of your phone as well...As far as getting into download mode, have Odin opened and ready to run, hold down both volume buttons and don't let go till your phone shows as added on the program. While holding the volume buttons only put your battery back into your phone and quickly plug your phone into the computer(still holding in the volume buttons) after about 3 seconds your phone will go into download mode and be recognized by odin. You may now release the volume buttons and flash your phone. If I left anything out I aplologize. Good luck.:fingers-crossed:

Haha was already looking at it, I was insterested in making one, but I live out in BFE and radio shack is 20 miles away, only have one usb, so that wasnt much of an option, which is why I ordered a jig, which is being affected by the hurricane. But Im downloading dual boot ubuntu and hopefully unbrickable mod will help, if not I gotta wait till tuesday for the jig. so impatient, all I wanted was REMICS-JB

K so like an idiot i deleted framework-res, and now my phone turns on to a black screen. I've tried to reflash it with odin and odin 1 click, but it always gets stuck at "file analysis". I don't get why because I used odin 1 click to install froyo in the first place so I know it works.
Anyway, I have no idea what to do, as I can't get any files on or off my phone because ADP will always say the device is not connected.
if its stuck at file analysis keep fiddling until it goes past that for instance plug in into download mode with it open and then unplug and replug it in. just keep trying.
i've been trying for hours... rebooting.. reinstalling.. everything. it won't get past File Analysis...
Are you trying to use the odin 1click to flash back to jf6? That might work.

nope, still hangs at File Analysis
i have done the same and now back up i used an old odin to go back to original stock and then updated to froyo after. If you can use sdk adb reboot recovery and fromat your sd card then try odin again this worked for me
maybe try restarting computer. make sure you dont have anything adb related running. pull battery. start odin one click. put battery back in. hold vol-up and down at same time(just the vol. buttons no power) plug in usb from comp. to your phone while you still have the vol. buttons held. should be in download mode. click start.
and if you wanna try pushing a new framework, i guess you could try to boot into recovery and adb should see it then as debugging mode is auto on in recovery mode. let us know.

Are you using 64 bit Windows 7? I am and had a similar problem. On my original attempts to flash my phone with earlier versions of Cognition, I learned that if you don't disable the lagfix, you can have a problem. Assuming you used one I hope you disabled it. I also used odin 1-click at the time and it didn't work terribly well, mostly due to the voodoo lagfix ext4 filesystem.
Secondly, I've also found that it's best to go into download mode using the following method:
I do a battery pull, remove sim and sdcard (if you have one), put battery back in. Make sure your USB cable is plugged into a USB port on the motherboard, not one of those front USB ports (they sometimes don't get enough juice, you wouldn't want the device to disconnect in the middle of a flash). Hold volume up/down and plug in the USB cable. Odin one click should recognize the phone is hooked up to a COM port. At that point, you click the start button and it flashes. It should not take more than 1-2 minutes to flash. If Odin looks like it it is not working, rather it sits at Verifying or does not actually move at a brisk pace, it's not going to work. You can let it sit for hours and it will never flash. If this happens, do the battery pull and try again. My first time doing this was rather nerve wracking as i thought i bricked my phone. Had the screen with the phone/exclamation mark/computer and the computer did not detect my phone via USB. I've seen people who say reinstalling the Samsung drivers or rebooting the computer or switching USB ports might help as well.
Ever since i figured out the above, i've been able to flash my Captivate on Win 7 64bit without a hitch. Currently running the latest build of Cognition 2.2 and loving it.
I've done all of the above and Odin hangs on Verifying, ADB gives the same error message on every "ADB" command : "error: device offline: (while in recovery mode)
My computer/Odin does recognize that it's plugged in, but it won't mount and let me into the SD card or format it, etc.

You should post what you did to fix it in case someone has the same issue
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yes he should.
What did you do to fix it? Do tell.
10 bucks says he succeeded once he read the directions properly.
Reading is hard, that is why so few people do it.
Same exact thing happened to to me 2 days ago. All I did was:
1)take the battery and SIM card out, wait a few seconds,
2)run Odin3 on my PC and hookup the USB cable to the phone while still off
3) hold both Volume buttons down while phone is off and connected
3)at the same time, slide in the battery with 1 finger or have someone do it
4)keep volume keys held down as the battery is installed and my phone turned on straight into download mode
5) phone pops up in Odin3 and just click Start, flashed to stock JH6
I am 80% sure I wasn't holding the power button while holding the Vol keys. If that doesn't work above ^^^ hold all 3 buttons and it should go into download mode.
so.. I fubard framework.apk trying to get teh circle battery mod on my phone (it just hung forever and *poof* black screen o' nothing after I pulled the battery)
So.. I'm following the directions but windows keeps finding the phone as some type of crazy serial device and is asking for drivers ... so I'm fux0red methinks.
Any help is appreciated - but I think I did a real number on this thing.
Ok... these are the steps I've done.
Shutdown the device.
Pulled battery, Sim, SD Card.
Popped the battery back in.... didn't power it up.
Turned on Odin3
Popped the USB cable into the phone while holding both volume buttons.
I get the lil triangle.
... then I get a windows message stating "SERIAL GADGET" and the XP wizard comes up looking for drivers. It doesnt find anything of course.
So.. I rinse and repeat and it can't find the device.
So what am I missing o wise XDA folks?

Get the right drivers if you havent already and find the USB port that works. Post 8 above is very good. On my netbook, only one of the three usb ports works for the captivate, i've marked it since with a happy face.
Ok.. at home now on my Win7 machine - all is good in Odin restore land...
Except - I flash using the Odin 1 Click and still boot to a black screen.
I think because I had the Voodoo lagfix on it - it won't format correctly and load the rest of the ROM onto the SDCard
Anyone Experience this?
Phone was on stock firmware from AT&T (never been rooted)
Plugged Phone Into the computer & opened Odin3Excution v1.00 & booted the phone into Download Mode and clicked Start on Odin. looked back at the phone minutes later and the phone had a full green screen. waited & waited and neither the phone or Odin were making progress. pulled the phone off the USB pulled the battery. restarted the computer and tried again. Now the phone will not boot at all not even the at&t smart phone screen and it wont boot into recovery or download mode.
The phone is being processed through warranty, I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this or knows what happened. Thanks!
BTW the phone was charged 100% and the sim & sd card werent in the device.

i had a green screen in the middle of a flash back to stock with ODIN one click (every usb device stopped working on my machine at once)

Advice, if you don't wanna risk it, find a win machine and use odin one click downloader
Sorry to resurrect and old thread, but it was either this or start a new thread for the same problem.
I was flashing back to stock from Mosaic and this happened. Green screen and nothing else. Now it won't turn on or go back into download mode. Think a jig will help this?.
Edit: Waited about 10 mins and tried again. IT LIVES!!!!
it is worth a try of jig if key combo does not work.
the same thing just happened to me. i was using odin3excution v1.00 to flash back to stock before taking the phone in to AT&T to get the warranty replacement. i got the teal/green/blue screen at factortrfs, it just sat there and killed everything usb on my computer. i pulled the battery and tried to reboot into download/turn it on/plug it in, no response whatsoever. i have the battery pulled and im waiting to try again, but if that does nothing, what can i do? i could take it in and tell them it did this in the middle of the kies update, but is that even believable? any help is appreciated, i don't have a jig and making one is last resort. thanks brothersss
I had loaded the ginger clone rom and all was well. I then however wanted to swap kernels so i loaded up seitrons cwm 1.5.6 and proceeded to flash through cwm. this has now become the worst day of my life. the phone will not boot past the galaxy s screen. i cannot not get into recovery and both computers now say usb device not recognized when in download trying to flash odin. i am worried that something is corrupted on my phone because not matter how many times i uninstall and reinstall the drivers no luck. i think it is officially bricked and im sol. maybe some great minds can figure it out here.
It's not bricked - issue is trying to get your computer to recognize your phone when in download mode so you can flash it back.
What OS are you running? Also - where did you download the drivers from? Some seem to work better than others.
If you can get to the galaxy screen you might still be able to to get into recovery. pull out the battery and use the 3 button combo. Hold down both volume button then power and let go of the power button after it turns on. then just reinstall the rom
I'm willing to bet you can also get into Download Mode either with button combos, or a JIG. Once in Download, you can use Odin to restore to JF6, and have a working phone to flash around with again.
i can get into download mode no problem. and i think it is quite possible drivers are corrupted on the phone itself. my wifes phone works on the same exact setup. no usb device not recognized error. i have tried the drivers from here and samsung directly with no luck. 3 button combo does not work. sim out sim in battery out and in. but like i said it will just not register with the comp and hers will. so im going to att and seeing about replacing it. but i will see how that goes. ive done this lots of times with no issues ever.
download works
3 button combo does not so no recovery
usb device not recognized error
thanks for the help and keep it coming i will try everything if i haven't already.
Try current usb port

Think I'm in worse shape. Tried flashing just the kernel to get BLN working again (last ROM I put on somehow loaded a non-compatible kernel). Now the phone boots the white ATT screen and just sits there. Can't get it into D/L mode with 3-button and doesn't respond to computer I have been using to flash ROMs for a couple weeks now...
Am I hosed? ANY help would be greatly appreciated...
You could try to use a JIG to force your phone into Download Mode
Okay...well, got into D/L mode finally. Used Odin to get it back to factory. Used the One Click rooter again, except now it boots to recovery 3e, which doesn't let my power button work as the okay button Pulling the battery to reset it, but it will no longer go into D/L mode to use Odin again. It keeps booting to the recovery Utils, which I cant get out of...*sigh*
Thoughts?
at least your able to do something i still cannot get my phone into recovery or to be recognized by the computer. it is not the drivers so i have no idea. i can only think that something got funked up with the kernel flash.
if you are getting into 3e recovery then you are most certainly NOT using the JF6 one click stock
3e recovery comes on JI6 which is the FroYo leak....completely different builds and roms
have you tried a different usb cable? I was having this problem, and the stock samsung cable was B.O. and wasnt working... i tried my blackberry one and all was good

I just want to quote this to stress the importance.
Thank you, didn't realize that (still sorta new to this)...
I downloaded a zip (I thought from here somewhere) that extracted into the 4 files. Anyone got a link to the JH6 set of files?
I also downloaded DG's "One Click Odin", but it doesn't seem to really do anything when I run it unless I manually load all the files. Also, I don't see a "Master Clean" like the post refer too
are you sure you downloaded the right odin? in the one click version, theres no option to load files at all. only a "start" and "master clear"
make sure the odin one click is open before you connect your phone.

I was having the same problem. Have you tried powering off, start odin, hold both the volume up/down, then plug in the usb to your phone?
I just recieved a new captivate via a warranty issue. Welll this one came with froyo 2.2 already loaded. My last capitvate had serendipity 6.4 installed and had no problems with flashing that one. Since I go my new captivate I wanted to try flashing a new ROM of course. So I decided on continuum v4. Here is where my problem started I opened odin3 plugged the phone in while holding the volume buttons and sent it into download mode. then clicked start on odin and let it do its thing. it got where it said "removed" in the bottom part and "RESET" up in the green bar. after looking at my phone it was just a black screeen with the battery charging symbol loading. it would come up and then disappear and come back up. it kept doing this for a while. this is where i made the mistake....after waiting a while i unplugged the phone from the computer to see if it would even start or anything. Well of course it wont start at all. it gets stuck at the AT&T screen and wont go any further. I can't get it back into download mode and dont know what to do? is my phone a paperweight now? IF anyone can help, i would greatly appreciate it. Either via here or phone. I've got my sim card back in my backflip right now.
what do you guys think?

Try this, I found it by googling
I've had success with this method to get into Download Mode:
1. Remove battery, SIM and microSD from phone (if you have one)
2. Wait at least 10 seconds with the phone in this state
3. Plug your phone into your computer (this step has always been optional for me)
4. Hold Volume Up/Down, don't let go!
5. While holding both volume keys, insert the battery

Lot of things could of happened, mainly because something might have happened to the wired connection between the pc and phone during the process. Im sorry I don't know the answer to the second question though. Maybe because the odin you were using was going back to stock "eclair" and not stock froyo?

Yes there are a few versions of odin but, either will work fine ... It's been reported that the one click will remove the 3 button fix in some phones with build numbers later than 1010, that info can be found under the battery btw, I've personally never had that problem, I flash and mod 3 captivates 1. Is a1010, 2. Are 1012's. All I've used is the one click version and they all still have 3 button combo.
There is an odin that flashes the 3 button combo while it flashes to stock, if you either never had it or have lost it ... Which I suggest you look for and use after you get jiggy with it so you'll have the combo for future use.
after making the jig with the resistors and everything, instead of going to download mode it just tries to turn the phone on and flashes the at&t screen on and off repeatedly....not sure what to try now
Scratch that. Was doing it barehanded and it would just try turning it on. I used some gloves and got it into download mode. Now I just need to plug it into my computer with odin alredy opened and once it recognizes and click start and let it do its thing right? And just don't unplug it right? What should I do if odin freezes up?

dont use ODIN one click. try AIO captivate toolbox 3.0. it uses heimdall which i have found to be much better for me

I have had experiance with my phone going with odin and all that good stuff, so i thought i could do the same to my co-workers phone. But he didnt have the 3 button combo working so i just used adb. I got into download started odin got stuck on file anyalisis so i unplugged it... jackass mistake. even after reading all the people that say dont. so now when i power it on its just phone ! computer. NO ATT screen. so are the bootloaders fried? i doubt that cause it still powers on. No button combo will work with usb. (vol up/down -usb, vol up/down/power/ -usb) none. i have tried everything. just goes to phone ! comp. Do i really have to tell him to wait for a jig? And will a jig fix it??? Thats what i am mostly worried about. i dont wanna pay for JTAG. Thanks guys
yup a jig will work. as long as it lights up its not completely fuxxored. could also build a ghetto rigged jig from radioshack and a microUSB end too if ya'll dont wanna wait

You could also try the one click unbrick I have not used it but it may work for you. The phone is not hard bricked which would need to then be jtagged, it is only soft bricked
One click unbrick? Where? Do you mean one click Odin to go to stock? Cause that wont work unless in download mode

Yeah i tried heimdal and one click ubrick it gives me. It doesnt recognize the phone is in download or phone!computer mode
i dunno if it will work but try this: take the battery out, put it back in, plug the phone into ur pc, when the phone /!\ comp screen comes up, hold vol down + vol up + power, wait till the second time the /!\ disappears then release only the power button, you should now be in download mode

I would post in the one click unbrick thread that is still very new and should fix your situation. Adam is working pretty hard to make that compatable, and universal. Make sure you give as much info as possible about the OS platform you are trying to run it on.

As mentioned, a JIG will save you or possible the one click unbrick tool. It sounds like you don't have the Heimdall driver installed correctly as well. Good luck!
Alright so a jig will work. But I don't want to drive into town if one click will work. When I try the resolution center to install drivers Samsung composite device isn't listed so I can't. I have my captivate can I just use that to install the drivers then switch em? I thought I already had the drivers installed cause I connect mine all the time.

Alright so I got a jig and its bow in download mode. But Odin just sits at "set pit file" "do not turn off target " no status bar on the cappy either ...... now what? Its on 2.2 I want it back to stock and so I can put root and cyanogen on it.

this has happened to me quite a few times, try opening odin BEFORE you plug in your cappy in download mode
Hahahaha oh my gosh after I got it into download mode I couldn't get Odin to recognize. But that's because even though adb cmd was exited. It was still in the background process. Therefore blocking Odin. I did it! With your guys help. Thanks guys. Oh and Josh I bought one of your jigs from mobile tech videos. just to help out.
