I found the below information on the Android Central website. Provides step by step instructions on how to unlock the bootloader and also the tools needed to accomplish the task. I take no credit for the information, I just wanted to pass it along to everyone else that may be interested. Peace.
http://www.androidcentral.com/how-unlock-nexus-4-bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
install super user
TADA you have root.
I'm surprised someone wrote an article on how to do this :\
This is not a locked down Verizon galaxy S3
Bootloader is unlockable via android-sdk fastboot
You boot a unsecure boot.img allowing mounting as root in adb
Push SU binaries and SuperSU (or superuser) apk over
tada reboot.

I complete agree with your post. However, there are a lot of people new to the Nexus (like myself) that may not know how to perform this task. Any step by step instructions (no matter how easy) are welcome. Peace bro.
If you're nervous about first-time unlocking and rooting, I'm positive there will be an all-in-one toolkit released shortly after the phone arrives. I'd always recommend learning how things actually work, but the toolkits are a great solution for people who aren't tinkerers and are only going to do it once.

Please please please, if you're trying to give someone helpful advice don't refer them to a toolkit. Have you seen how many post were in the galaxy nexus forums from people using that toolkit and when something went wrong they had absolutely no idea how to fix it.
If you'd really like to learn how to root this device please do it the right way and take the time to learn so when something goes wrong you have the know how to fix it, and also it really isn't difficult.
If you really feel the need to use a toolkit do so after you've learned the basics. Not trying to be a ****, so please don't take this post that way.

So, if we unlock it, do we still receive OTA from Google ?
Sorry, but coming from an O2X, I have no idea how OTA works :S
Is it even safe to unlock a bootloader? Sorry, first time unlocking a bootloader in anything, and my first Nexus device as well..
Yes to both of the post above me.
In terms of warranty is there a fast way to lock the bootloader again ?

The more people know that rooting is a simple process, at least on a Nexus, the better off the Android scene becomes, as people untap the full power of their devices.

Does bootloader unlocking even void the warranty on Nexus devices?
Simple scripts and toolkits are fine as long as you know what they're doing and why.

I'm not sure if I just misunderstood this or what, but I want to clarify this a bit.
"Fastboot oem unlock" unlocks the bootloader. Correct.
Now, when you say "install super user", it looked like you were saying it like a command prompt.
Just to clarify for some people who don't know...That isn't a cmd prompt. You will have to boot into a custom recovery, then flash the su.zip.

I bought a "rooted"phone, but I never used android before. I'm guessing the build number? Mine is FRF91. What are some benefits of rooting?
FRF91 is just the version of Android.
Best way is to see if there is an app installed called Super User. Other than that, try downloading an app that required root. Just search for riot on the market.
Search if you want to know what root is for. If you're new, I suggest not rooting your phone.

OK thanks, I don't have Super User and noticed when using N1Torch it wont let me go super bright since it can't find root. So I guess not. lol. Don't worry, I'm fine for now without rooting, but I come from WinMo having ORD, so I'll need to know how to get custom roms soon. lol

Perhaps "rooted" in this case meant bootloader-unlocked then? Does your N1 show a padlock icon on the bottom of the first X screen when you boot up? If so, the hard part (and your software warranty) is already done
I know its sim unlocked, ill check for the lock now
EDIT: no padlock, good or bad?

All Nexus ones are sim unlocked.
As for no padlock, means you bootloader is locked, which is good. meaning you're completely stock.
There are methods of loading custom roms without unlocking bootloader.
Unlock bootloader (you see padlock) means your Nexus One's software warranty is void.
I don't worry about voiding warranty, that's the first thing I do with most of my electronics lol

In that case, unlocking the bootloader is by far the easiest way to hack this phone
Once you've got the android SDK installed on your computer, all it takes is the command "fastboot oem unlock" to get your phone's bootloader unlocked. How much easier could it get?
Ok great. I guess ill play around with the phone stock for about a week
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
You don't need to unlock the bootloader to root or flash custom roms anymore though so I would suggest using the alternative methods found in the development section and leave your warranty intact. Although most people haven't had a problem replacing their phones with unlocked bootloader there's just no point in risking it anymore because there's no need to do it that way imo.

Yes just picked mine up today. Would love to know how to root this device also.
With this phone being released on AT&T on November 6th there will most certainly be a tremendous increase in the desire for root and dev involvement. It won't be long before this phone has it's own forum and a whole lot of XDA love. I'm one of the many that has been waiting for this phone to come out since it was leaked back in May and I can hardly wait to get my hands on one!
Adding support to this thread. Would love to get root for my Raider! Will also help out this process in anyway I can.

Does the raider/vivid have the ability to do HDMI out?
it has a mhl port which is physically identical to a micro usb, it does do hdmi out but you need an adapter
google mhl to hdmi and it will all come up
Do we know if the boot loader is locked or unlocked?
Add your vote here to get an HTC Holiday/Raider/Vivid forum added.
Anyone try the regular rooting methods

*Okay so this is one of my first posts on this forum so please cut me some slack if I've made a mistake*
My Nexus seven tablet came in the mail today and I've been doing a lot of research on rooting it and installing a kernel. I've searched around the site using the search tool and looked around as much as I can but I just can't seem to find anything talking about how to completely reset the entire tablet as if it just came out of the box; the reason I'm asking this is because I plan on rooting it and installing my own kernel. The problem is I don't want to actually void the warranty in the situation that something were to happen to it that is covered by the warranty, I could reset the tablet completely and send it back to them without them knowing it was ever flashed or rooted!!
The question: there are programs out there that can be used on the computer and the device itself that will allow the user to completely reset the device using a backup taken from the device before any modifications are done to it; what are some programs that sound like those specifications, where can I get it and how can I use it?
ANY help will be rewarded with thanks

This is all that you need, download the factory image you need for your tablet and flash it with nexus root tool 1.52, it's an all in one application that allows you to unlock, root, install cwm and even flash images back to stock. When you flash a google factory image it will wipe the entier tablet and install the stock kernel.
Other than that you're good to go.

dang, didn't even notice it . Updated my previous post, thanks!
It's a Nexus device. You don't have to worry about anything. If needed, download the factory image directly from Google, flash it, and fastboot oem lock to relock the bootloader. Good as new.
It doesn't matter what you have done on your nexus. Warranty covers manufacturer defects (screen lift, other defects people had, etc) and not damages from misuse (dropping it in water, bricking it by flashing a bad file, etc)
It's a Nexus device, made for unlocking and rooting. Google doesn't care one bit. If it has a hardware defect, they will replace it. They built these devices to be as open as possible for you to do anything you want with it.
They even go above and beyond for you to let you hack it and still have a great experience. Originally you couldn't view rented movies on a rooted system because of the movie licensing they had, they went and worked on changing that so rooted users can rent them too now.
Since Google talked about hacking their devices at Google I/O ... I don't think they care anymore ... the only reason they disable some apps due to root is to protect its content .. DRM protected content and like your Wallet
But just as a note ... flashing any factory image will restore your device completely ... so back up all photos, videos, etc ... stuff that isn't stored on the cloud

If you want updates after you root you have to flash them yourself. It's not that big of a deal, just like flashing anything else. Please don't try to OTA update a rooted device.
Samsung devices are the only ones that I know of that keep track of mods to your device.

Nonono. Toolkits are a bad bad bad idea. It's actually not hard to flash roms and unlocked bootloaders. But it is so worthwhile learning all the commands and doing it yourself. Then if you ever stuff something up you will have an idea how to fix it instead of using a stupid toolkit. There are so many guides on here. They are well worth reading

you never once asked. a bump'd recovery is a recovery that you can just flash without doing any extra stuff. can flash to and from stock to twrp vice versa with the press of a button.
