Hi,
I was really looking forward to getting a Windows 8 Phone, but I have read reports that WP8 won't support PPTP VPN?
Can anyone confirm this 100%?
If it is disabled would it still work if I connected my Nexus 7 via the tethering option on the WP8?
Thanks!

Is that not supported period, or not supported until someone makes a 3rd party app like Cisco or something?

Well that's me not buying a WP8 device then as I do need to use traditional VPN now and then.
Kimbie
I have a Nokia Lumia 920; love it very much but no VPN support in the OS.
Come on, Microsoft: Two years is a long enough time to develop VPN support! I almost switched to a Galaxy Note but found the WP interface better and decided to give WP8 a chance. No luck yet with WP8 either.
I now have to carry an Asus/Google Nexus 7 and tether with Lumia 920 in case I need to connect to my employer's network via VPN--and VPN does work fine. I can live with the existing arrangement for now--Nexus 7 literally fits in my pocket. But I would rather not carry two devices.

Exchange SSL is a server side certificate that validates the identity of the server. Client side certificates validate the identity of the client TO the server. They are different animals, this was explained to me in the MOTO forums and there is in fact like half a dozen people working on this very issue.
The short term solution is 3rd party as already mentioned.
Moto is working that or google is?

People at MOTO are working with at least one particular user in their forums.
this is a huge thorn in our side as a secure corporation
I tried the app secure eas (which works great on froyo on the incredible) but it is soooo unstable. I know that we can use touchdown, but i wish we had a free version. Just sounds as though the client certs are not even thought about... kinda rediculous.

Well if the company is that hardcore about security they can probably kick in 15 bucks for the e-mail app. That's my initial knee-jerk reaction to such a statement. To my knowledge, the MOTO team has gotten nowhere on this FWIW and the issue I'm sure goes back to the default mail client just not being up to par for it.
To be perfectly honest, it's not all that suprising to me.

Well it is a combination of two things...
1 - the company wants to be secure and because of it (like many other companies) is all Blackberry at this time.
2 - I cant stand freaking bberry devices so I am trying to get the devices to connect to exchange and in a way we can control and monitor.
With that said, how the hell can the iphone support client certs and android cant? Especially when there are like 10 mail apps out there... the only one that does... oh of course... the one you have to pay for.
I am not saying paying is out of the question, but it sure would be nice to tout that free price tag.

Well it's a misconception that any ipad app worth a **** is free, they're not... I own one.
There's also no "free" anything going on here... you bought an $800 Xoom to get around using your companies crappy blackberrys and I would do the same lol. for less than 5% of the total purchase you can complete the experience. Just do it and get it over with lol.

Hi!
I'll soon get the fantastic Casio G-Shock with Bluetooth 4.0 link function - which normally works with iOS and Android OS. As i also have a Nokia Lumia 920 additional to my iPhone I'd like to use it with this new gadget. Is there any possibility to convert the existing Android App into a working WP8 App? Any solutions out there?

Nope, no chance. Thank Microsoft for the restriction.

How do they not allow it? Bluetooth APIs are open, heck, you can even open bluetooth sockets and transmit raw data over them (unlike NFC, which is limited to NDEF formats). It's up to Casio to make the app. If Casio decides WP is not a big enough market, fair enough. They could release the protocols the watch are using, and developers can make an app for them.

Smh. You obviously know how to use the internet, clearly you do because you're on this board.
How about searching the internet for the kind of access Casio needs. Its more than a simple app that is needed.
Apple just added the functionality IOS 5 & 6.

Hi,
i just flash updated my nexus 4 to support multiuser restricted profiles on my phone.
just found out that windows has a patent for multiuser profiles on phone and we won't be receiving it officially.
so is there any custom ROM development going on to support this feature on the NEXUS 4, if not i want to request it!

I guess that makes sense.
I don't really see the point of such a feature on a phone anyway. Unless you share your phone with someone, which I highly doubt, considering you own a highend smartphone.

Another stupid patent that should have never been issued, or should no longer apply to modern smart phones. Today's smart phones are not phones, but micro-computers with phone capability. How many computers are not capable of multiple user accounts?

Hi,
Well, if it makes more sense to activate that setting on a tablet than on a phone, I must say that, almost every time we are in the car for a (even mildly) long trip, the kids ask to play on my phone...
What bothers me is 2 things :
- 1°) they install a lot of things that I do not want as personal use ;
- 2°) they both want to play the same game but can only have 1 for both, so, supposing it's a game to build a village, they play on the others village...
So, even though I understand the reason, I think that multi-user DOES make sense, even on a phone !
Regards.
NexusPenguin
I think there is an app that provide that feature.
You can also download an app to enable multiuser, but you have to use low dpi like 190dpi which make the phone unusable.
The easiest way is to install Paranoid Android which have the feature included.

Android screen mirroring has not arrived yet. And by the looks of it, the device side will have to be supplied by OEMs, most likely baked into ROMs. I could see screen mirroring easily being used by malware, so this is probably a security measure.

It's available in the AOSP SDK for KitKat.
Which means it is possible that they have plans to implement it in the future if the Manufacturers want to.
But it appears to be nothing much more than a way of doing Miracast with a Chromecast.
And I'm willing to bet that for the security reasons bhiga mentioned it will only work as a Radio to Radio connection in the same way Miracast does.
That will solve the issues of malware since it would really only work to send to a CCast very close and near to the unit.

I hope it's not just radio-to-radio as it would be restrictive for some apps, but at least limiting the functionality to OEM manufacturers means no third-party apps could silently launch screen-mirroring. Assuming you trust your OEM manufacturer, at least.

I would think that if a Manufacturer could add something to the ROM to make it work there is no reason why an app couldn't do the same thing especially one that intended to do something you shouldn't.
I'm not all up on Miracast (since I don't have a device that supports it , I do have a dongle though) but I'm betting you can connect to Miracast without losing Internet and if that is true then thats probably how CCast mirroring will work because the only way to be sure it is secure is to limit what it can broadcast to. And Radio Range would seem to be the best method for that. Means the Spy would have to be in radio range to intercept the stream.
But I'm with you I hope not!
Would much prefer it worked on PIN PAIR method (Like Bluetooth) where you add the CCast as a Display device, You enter a Pin code to pair them and Mirroring only works with devices your paired to.
Thats best protected in the OS and would work because Apps couldn't then pair with anything other than your own screen....
But that doesn't mean the Divorce rate won't go up! LOL

Koush said the API isn't available to non OEMs. So it would take some kind of exploit, which would then be very device and configuration specific, so fairly safe. Likely there's some signing process as well.

Yes but I'm betting that it may need the OEMs to add drivers for the support which is why it's done there but not as part of android.
Which is why I fear it working like Miracast does. The API is there but the OEMs need to make drivers that will allow simultaneous Network and Mirroring via Radio.
This is the only cheap and effective method which seems to have worked for me. All you really need is VPN, in this day and age who wouldn't have a VPN service anyway, I am using the Private Internet Access's vpn service and followed this thread which works flawlessly. I mean I didn't have to root my chromecast (which it can't be, unfortunately) and also didn't have to use my flashed router for this method either.

Some routers support connecting to a VPN, in which case all your Internet traffic would go through the VPN.
FWIW only the DNS redirection (iptables) method requires a hacked router. IP/port-based blocking is supported by some routers, and most routers support the static route to bogus gateway method.

I agree with your point about not using a laptop.
However, Chromecast does requires another connected device to cast to it and a router to provide wireless network, so what is described does remain a valid option for those that need/want to bypass network-based regional restrictions.

IMO it's not efficient or wise, but some people do, because they want US-based content (or content from somewhere other than where they are). Some folks also do it for work.
Others simply enable/disable the VPN as necessary.

I use Sabai Technology's OS. It costs 100 dollars, but the support is great.
You have to have one of the routers that they support, but it was much cheaper getting my own router and doing the installation myself than buying a pre-installed router.
It works great. My VPN supplier supports their routers, so I only have to add a supplied ovpn file to the router and then decide which things to connect through the VPN and which to leave locally.
I'm sure it's possible to do the same thing in Tomato yourself, but my knowledge isn't that good and it would take me a very long time.
