[Q] using sdcard as memory - HTC Salsa

OK i know their are loads of posts about this but i was wondering if any one can start a step by step process from i.e new phone with crap internal memory, to using the sd card (mine is a 2gb one) as internal memory,
so if its possible to go from step one to however many it takes in a simple readable way for any and all noobs (me) i would be sooo great full and screenshots would go along way too.
much appreciated

that's lazy!
ive made so many threads doing this and spent ages sorting screenshots and guides out.please use them! in the other post earlier i stated what order you need to follow. please use the correct guides. if you use the guides and get stuck and i don't mean at the first 1 step either...then ill help. the only pointer i will give is this.> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1704495 basics/ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1565898 ext3
use the search function next time or a mod will step in over me.

I created this thread cause in the JACHero thread on at least every page everyone asks how to install it, what am I doing wrong, and why is it broken.
So let me give you step by steps of what exactly I have done for me and others to run Hero with out a problem. I will also create a thread with step by step on how to use Ubuntu Linux Live distro to partition your card.
Things you will need to make this work.
Your Brain
G1 Phone
SD Card reader
And the files I included in this thread.
My phone right now is running.
JACHero 2.3
NEW SPL
cyanogens recovery 1.2
8gb class 6sd with Swapper(Swap file on ext2 sd)
setCPU slightly overclock.
Results.
Ever since I did my new Buttons, and the SPL I included in this write up, I have not had one problem flashing any hero rom at all on my phone, nor did I ever have problem actually running hero roms.
So here goes.
First before you partition your card or do anything make sure your card is at least portioned to fat32, don't worry about any other partitions yet.
OK once you do that go ahead and take the radio zip file I am including in this thread and flash it on your phone.
But first make sure you don't already have new radio installed which is 2.22.19.26I THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. To check what radio you have, power off your phone, and power it on while holding the camera button.
If you do have new radio you can continue on to flashing the new SPL.
Flashing your SPL. (PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE NEW BUTTONS INSTALLED)
Ok this is where it might get a little tricky, and you might require a SD card reader I know I did and frankly I think this is the best way to do it and I recommend every time you do put a new update on your sd card to update your phone do it through a card reader.
Now after you flash your SPL you might or I should say more then likely will get stuck at the T-Mobile G1 screen, this also might happen after new radio flash in the previous step. If this is the case do not freak out it's normal and your phone is not bricked, but this is why having a sd card reader is important.
Ok so Here is what you do after you have flashed new Radio and SPL(Note:The steps on running Linux live distro and using it to partition your card is coming up). Boot up Live distro of Ubuntu, when its done booting, go ahead and go into the partitioning program while your sd card is hooked up in the computer.
Go ahead and set up two partitions at this time. One EXT3, and of course the other one Fat32. Your ext3 partition doesn't have to be all that big. I actually have mine set up to 512.
Once you are done creating partitions, go ahead and put the latest JACHero on the FAT32 portion and flash away (don't forget to rename to update.zip).
At this point if you follow all of these steps there is no way possible that your phone should not boot right into the system to run the initial setup.
These steps pretty much walk you through steps as if you were starting with a phone that has completly nothing on it.
Also the first boot up after flashing the new ROM, might take a few mins at the HTC screen.
Once your phone loads up and you go through the setup process go ahead and run swapper, it should be an APP that's already pre-installed.
Once you run swapper go into the setting and change the location of your swap file from /sdcard/swapfile.swp to /system/sd/swap.swp
Here is the reason why. The default location is your FAT32 partition. If you all of a sudden mount your phone to the computer with the swap file running on FAT32 you will corrupt your sd card, and then you will have to wipe and reinstall everything.
If you set the location of your swap file on /system/sd/ that's actually your ext2/3 partition and never gets mounted and you never have to turn swapper off.
Well I hope this helps some of you out. I will be writing the walk through on loading up live distro of Linux and partitioning your card sometime today.
I have used this method on a couple different phones and it has worked each time. Also I really recommend installing cyanogens recovery 1.2, as its an excellent way of making a back up of your phone and doing future flashing.
If there is anything anyone thinks that could be done better feel free to post in here.
Remember different people have different ways. I have posted this way cause it has worked for me on my phone and two other phones I setup, and each time there was no hicups.
FILES:
Radio 2_22_19_26I
NEW SPL
CM-Recovery-1.2
Ubuntu Linux Download
DISCLAIMER:
I am not responsible for anything that you might have done to your phone by following these directions. Like I mentioned before so far every time I have used this method, I have had nothing but success.

Hey everyone,
I was trying to follow the guide posted after the OP (quoted above), and had a few questions that didn't seem all that clear to me. I've searched all of last night looking for answers.
-What does he mean by "PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE NEW BUTTONS INSTALLED", and how do I install them if I must?
-The cyanogen recovery image, is that installed just as any other rom, via update.zip, ALT+S, etc.?
-Lastly, is it really that much better if I get a Class 6 card? I currently have a regular microSD, but am willing to stick with it if the build runs fine, any other reports on this?
I'm currently at a very basic build, JFv1.51 with no other mods. Thanks in advance!
Buttons in the post refers to the Radio. Yes the CM recovery image is installed just like a ROM, alt+s. Yes it is worth it to get a class 6 sd card. I myself don't have one but I know it's worth it. Got to newegg I think you can get one there for under 20$ Hope i helped you!

sd space question

I have a 4 gig sd card with it partioned ext2,ext3, and a linux swap. To be honest I don't know really what that means exactly, just followed the tutoriul to have my apps to go to my sd card. When I go to sd storage info it says.
Total space- 3,255mb Available space 1,875 mb.
Under Sd card secondary it says Total space- 457mb Available space- 292mb
For Internal phone storage it says 78mb available.
My question is where are my apps actually going? And where does my other stuff such as music, movies and other files go? From what i am guessing I have 1875mb for files and 292mb for apps. Correct? Thanx in advance for explaining this too me.
It should be fat32, ext3, linux-swap. 78 megs sounds right for apps2sd. Your apps go to ext3 along with your cache, movies and other files you can browse on your phone go to your fat32which is your normal storage and swap is a location where your phone puts operating memory to hold more processes in the background(helps out you ram)

This is a warning flag that you will probably brick or otherwise disable your phone in the future.
Nothing in the dev subforum should be performed until you fully understand how it works.

I doubt everybody here knows exactly every technical detail and aspect about their phones. In addition I knew I was partioning my sd card just wanted to understand where all my files were going. I have successfully rooted my phone the old fashion way and installed numerous roms and themes after many hours of reading and following directions in these forums. I'm sorry i am not expert in linux or coding. All I asked was for some information of the subject, if you can't help then don't post. Thanks gridlock for your answer.
You are welcome but I must defend jashsu, you have only been a member since last month and made a few posts, he was just staying on the side of caution because there are a lot of people who just dive in without knowing what they are doing and no offense but your ? Was a common type of ? That a noob who did not have much knowledge would ask

I tried to help, you weren't receptive of it. Maybe a second time with some added emphasis will drive the point home?
Nothing in the dev subforum should be performed until you fully understand how it works.
Are there people in the dev forum who can/should do things that they don't fully understand? Of course; they are the hackers and experimenters who are not afraid of bricking their devices. I assume (perhaps wrongly?) from your comment "I don't know really what that means exactly, just followed the tutoriul" that you are not one of those people. I'd be happy to be proven wrong.
I stand by what I wrote.
Edit: by the way the asking of questions (although searching would be good too) is part of the process of learning and therefore understanding. I was not at all trying to discourage you from asking the question, I was just pointing out the danger of proceeding with dev modifications without proper understanding.
78mb?? your lucky I only got 33mb! and I got cyanogens rom with automatic apps2sd!
where do you guys reckon my space has gone?
Did you wipe before you flash cyanogen, right now on 4.04 I have 64mb internal with running the danger spl, that does change internal memory

Im looking for some advice/input. Im going to start running android on my HTC touch (Bell). What is the best Android rom to use? Are there many issues?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712310
You will be happy you did...
Thanks for the response. Im actually looking at this now. I cant see any install instructions and not sure exactly what files to grab. Will it work with these steps:
Easiest Step-By-Step Android Tutorial for the Vogue (NAND Method/Internal Memory) thread?
Does it matter if I run it off the miniSD vs fully flashing my phone?

That is a great thread to start at, it's where I first learned.
I've found that Android runs smoother while being run from the phone, not the sd card.
Those instructions should work. I have not really used them since Myn's Donut (older ROM). I dont see why not the process should be the same. I ran off SD for a while during donut days, things were slower. Running off NAND now and its a really nice experience.
It must just be me, but I haven't been able to get camera working on any Android builds. I am thinking my Sd card gets unmounted or something. Camera app starts, I can see display, then Force Closes.
I am running off sd card, I even tried partitioning cards, seems as though one of the ext2 partitions goes bad or something. If I place card in computer, one of the partitions is always corrupt?
I have re-formatted and re-partitioned 3 different cards using Gparted, always same error after installing Android system to Sd and Data to SD in install menu.
I apologize if this isn't clear, trying to explain it as best I can
WoW!
I just finished the install. Now working with Google sync to get my contacts over. I love it already and havent even done much! I may eventually install on the phone. Are the steps any different? Is there a thread to get setup?
Thanks for all the responses.
Go with Incubus26Jc's Super Froyo build on NAND I've been using for a month now and its been awesome hardly any problems

[Q] trouble installing honeycomb and market with SD boot

Hello all
still learning this android devlepment platform, so forgive me if this already has been covered. I've been trying to follow all the instructions as closely as I can but I've had no luck. I'm left with a few issues on my hands:
(first off, my full spec: I am running the nookhoney04.img file on an 8GB SD card - not sure what class # it is - on my nook color. no rooting done, I have only been working on this SD card. my computer is AMD64-based Windows 7 x64 with 8GB of RAM. though I may try tooling with it on my ubuntu virtual machine at some point...)
- I cannot seem to find the /system/build.prop file anywhere. I've done this in the past by inserting my nook-honeycomb-imaged SD card into my computer and simply browsing to it. what am I doing wrong here? the reason I can't do it via adb pull is part of another problem I've got below.
- when running the ADB on my emulator (which for some reason performs very poorly) to try to make the changes (install the apk's, do the chmods or even run the script) I can't seem to get this right either. I've loaded the apk's into the adb directory just as instructed but when I run the command adb -e install gmail.apk, it comes back to say "gmail.apk cannot be found." strange since it is sitting in the directory.
- when I run the script (install google apps and do chmods, etc) with the emulator running, it says "not enough space available." could this be due to the fact that I'm running a 3.5 GB image on a 8GB SD card without having expanded the image's app directory capacity to take advantage of the space on the card?
- is there any current way to improve the performance of running honeycomb from an SD card? i.e expanding the image to take advantage of more than its natural 3.5GB of space and make better use of the space on the SD card being used?
I'm just a tad confused. I've really been trying to follow instructions, read, educate myself, and learn, but it seems something is amiss here, so I turn to you all.
any advice is greatly appreciated.
thanks!
-apologies, this is a double post - I've posted the same question on the general android development forum.
Try this image:
It's much more complete than v04 and it's sorta kinda working, but far from perfect for everyday usage off course:

thanks a lot for the response, I will give this a shot.
woah - this is great! I wish I'd found this earlier! thanks so much
now I REALLY want to root it! or get a better sd card.... so begins the debate...
thanks!
Funny thing is-i don't think you even have to root to try this build-just burn the image to SD card and try.
and next time you can use proper "thanks" button instead of thanking me twice in your post

[Q] Internal SD hard Damaged,

My phone was dead for 4-5 months as its internal SD was totally defective and unrecoverable. After spending 5 nights on XDA, I was able to turn ON it (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1893354) is the link where I got the files .
But now, I am neither able to access memory (camera, gallery, apps etc.) nor able to root. Neither camera nor gallery is working. How to root it and how to make memory accessable. 1.87 GB is showing in System as I used ext4 partition of 2 GB. I partitioned 16 GB class 6 memory card with 2GB ext4 and 12.5GB fat32 and then flashed the modified files given on the link which made my phone go pass the galaxy logo and phone started. Can someone compile rooted kernel for this solving the issue (which can directly install on External Sd card)? I am newbie to development and couldn't make zImage after trying. If someone already compile the kernel, please let me get it. Or please someone give step by step description for that.
Hoping to get it worked as this is my first post on XD

Don't know if you got this fixed. If not take a look at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdMhYYdMB08
I think you may need to modify the vold.fstab file, it's at around 07;16 on the vid. Also look at the comments.
Cheers

Thanks for the immediate help!
This is the first thing i tried on the first day of my reseasch for eMMC brick but everything in this video was useless for me. Odin doesn't directly flashes firmwares to external SD untill you modify the zImage of the rom. I wonder how fsteller was able to install that and make that working.
It does not work in my case
