[Q] What to Wipe when Installing CM7

Sorry if I'm repeating a question that's already been asked but I couldn't find the exact answer I was looking for.
I want to update from the last 6.1 nightly to CM7 (current nightly) and I've loaded the newest version of CMR (3.0.0.5)....now what do I need to wipe when installing the new ROM?
I'm not too worried about backing a whole lot up, just want to load the new ROM to try it.
Any/all help would be appreciated.

If you are updating you probably won't need to wipe, however I wipe cache and dalvik when updating

Bootloop while installing many ICS ROM

Hi, i have the same problem with a lot of ICS ROM, bootloop after installation.
I would like to know if there is a standard solution to fix this kind of problem.

If u are on gingerbread it's simple.download an ics rom.put your INTERNAL sd and flash it twice.but u need 2 recovery.
to get that flash cf-root with odin.
Factory reset,wipe cache and dalvik in recovery and flash
Clean aokp b.34 is a good quite stable and fast rom.

PS.ALWAYS make a nandroid backup from recovery to restore previous rom if something goes wrong

Yay,but please don't post in that thread,that SHOULD be for the devs only.to solve the problem some people are experiencing.I got 2 sgs one is flashed constantly and I am one the few lucky ones that only experience easily recoveble bootloops.

first off let me say im a newbi and just started flashing roms, and just wondered how i should go about updating a existing rom in ss3. i just need to know if i should just flash the new zip over the same rom slot or do i need to wipe everything and pretty much make a whole new rom? sorry if its a dumb question but i just cant seem to find a step by step answer to do this, and just so u know your answers are much appreciated.

You are fine to flash a new build over an old one without wiping data. Just wipe cache and dalvik cache, flash the new build, reboot and your good to go. The exception is if you are moving to a new version of android (CM9 to CM10) or if you are moving to a different ROM (CM10 to AOKP). In those instances you would want to wipe data as well.

[Q] [noob][Xperia T][4.3] Update to hybrid 4.3

Hi all,
This is a noob question, I’m sorry, but I figured I’d post the question and explain what I understood so others could benefit. As I’m a new user, I’m posting here and not in the development section.
After looking at the new 4.3 ROMs, I figured peetr_ hybrid ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2627922) looked good and I am now trying to figure out how to install it.
Right now, I have a Xperia T (LT30p) with CWM-based Recovery v6.0.2.7, Doomkernel 3.4.0 and XperimenT 2.3 (i.e. JB 4.1.2).
Here is how I planned to update [order and wording changed following Alex5699’s comments]:
1) Download a new Kernel, one of the two mentioned here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49870676&postcount=13 . One of them has no recovery, so I figure that if I flash one without recovery, I will loose recovery? So I think I will choose this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2604492 in its zipfile version and put it on the phone.
2) Download the zipfile from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2627922 and put it on the phone.
3) Go into recovery.
4) Do a factory reset(=wipe data), wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache.
5) Flash the ROM. No reboot before the next step!
6) Flash the kernel.
7) Reboot and be happy.
I just wanted to check if this is the right order (if someone agrees I’ll update the post to remove the question marks) and that I’m wiping the right things. I suppose wiping these things does not erase the content on the virtual sdcard in the phone. At least that’s what I think I remember from last time.

we do have an official 4.3 out now for the T so basically hes saying latest 4.3 firmware (mainly baseband/radio)(flashtool or official way)
- stock based 4.3 kernel
- working recovery is needed if u wanna flash the hybrid rom .. but since ur on a 4.1.2 rom you jus follow the steps u posted first .. and when they said to flash rom and then kernel without reboot they mean right after rom is install "while on 4.1" go to install again and select the kernel then once thats install then u reboot and allow your phone to boot up .. first time boot may take up to 5 mins so be patient

In other words, you’re saying (just to make sure I understood you correctly):
1) No reboot between flashing the ROM and the kernel. (I had understood that, but you’re right, I should correct that above, and I will).
2) It’s not an issue if I’m not already on a 4.3 kernel (although it’s written in the prerequisites), as long as I follow the instructions above. [For others reading this, there is a list with stock firmwares here for instance http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2648320 .]
3) There will be no need for separate baseband flashing (there is an explanation video on youtube for the Xperia Z for those who don’t know how to do it, I can’t post the link as a xda-noob =D) or for flashing a separate recovery (since the mentioned kernel has already a built-in recovery) after following the instructions above, and no need to fear not recovering my mac-address.
Don’t worry, I’m not asking you to give me some kind of warranty, I’m just trying to make sure I understand what you’re saying.

question about installing a nightly update.

Hi i flashed a month ago aicp to my xperia sp and now i want to install a nightly of the same rom.Do i have to do full wipe or just flash the rom?I am using cyanogen recovery.I am asking this because in my previous rom i installed a nightly update without wiping and i ended up bricking the phone.

I read everywhere that the safest way is to do a full wipe, and since you have nothing to lose it won't hurt, so i think you should.

yes it is practically the correct way to update a nightly.
However do bear in mind that the nature of nightly is that it might have problems after different builds, therefore having a previous build zip handy would really help you. Also backups!
In case of a problem, clean flashing sometimes aren't really your go-to method to correct stuff. Always assume it as a last resort.. In case you faced any problem do kindly share here.

Yes, nightly is a daily release where changes are huge in the back end.. Sometimes a simple change can make a build unbootable. Sometimes it introduces new bugs. Sometimes it is better and fixes everything. It is of course a good thing to update to the latest if possible, it is just that it is also vital to know what we're going to face when we flash a new update. So that we can make backups beforehand in case something really bad happens.
If you are installing an update to the same ROM there is no need to wipe anything. Wiping is optional.
↑ Note, if you are reverting to a previous build, you will need to wipe everything as there will be conflicts for the system data. This is why frequent/periodic app backups useful.
You can do either both of them without any problem
