Hey,
I am trying to fix a friends optimus black. He has CWM recovery installed but when I flash ROMs then reboot system, it just boots straight back to the recovery. Is there anything I am doing wrong? I have tried 3 different ROMs from the dev section, ICS, GB and JB. I make sure to do a full wipe between flashing.
Many thanks, as I don't have much experience with this phone. (Although I have many years experience with flashing android roms)

Reflash with Smart Flash Tool. A few kernels automatically go to recovery if they fail to load. I can't think of anything else.
Try changing your CWM Recovery by flashing another version. Use my CWM Recovery flasher (in my signature).
thanks, i tried changing CWM using your flasher, but it still didnt work.

What do you need? Some ROMs to flash? Find links to kdz files in post 3. Extract and root it yourself (also see post 3 on my how to).
might be redundant saying this but in cwm itself have you flashed the 6.0.1.4 update within itself ald?

I was trying to follow the unbricking guide in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1448803

Other bin/fls ROMs are HERE. (All these links are working again!)
You need to install LG Mobile drivers. They are located HERE. [CRC MD5: e4614071e72c0292d3a8238908b5c7ba]

Also, I am on CWM 6.0.1.4 but now I get an error when I try to choose a zip from the SD card "E: Can't mount /sdcard"
Cheers for the help.
EDIT: managed to find the files... will update soon.
EDIT 2: Flashed the official firmware with smart flasher, now im in a bootloop with the "firmware update" screen, first I had a BSOD.
Im about to flash the V20a files using smart flasher. fingers crossed.
EDIT 3: Flashing worked via smart flashing tool... BUT I'M STILL STUCK IN CWM RECOVERY!
any ideas?
Thanks

I have just done exactly these steps. I have tried flashing both the zeus rom and AOKP jelly bean build 4. Each time the ROM flashes successfully, however when I select "reboot system now," it just boots straight back to recovery again...
The only thing I could think of trying would be to restore a nandroid with cwm. I dont have one though, can anyone link me to a working nandroid, or upload one?

Since some people asked me, I'm providing rooted system.img to be flashed by nvflash, an easy way to get v28g installed from kdz or smartflash rooted, for those who prefer to keep it as stockish as possible. The only mods I did from stock kdz backed up from my phone was to push su and superuser.apk.
This procedure did not wipe anything, so as a rule you shouldn't worry about backups, but I recommend you to use nvflash tool to make backups of all your partitions before trying this. Search here on dev's section to "nvflash toolkit", an excellent work from rmein, and use it to make backups.
Put the .img extracted from downloaded 7zip file on any functional nvflash folder, connect your phone in apx mode (without battery, BOTH vol up and down and plug it to usb), go to your nvflash folder and execute the following in cmd prompt.
nvflash.exe --bl fastboot.bin --download 23 rooted_system_v28g.img
Actually, I don't know if this command works on windows. Since I'm linux user (I'm sure that command syntax is useless to penguin's users), I didn't test this on win. So, if you used nvflash before on your win box and the previous didn't work, please let me know.
Download: http://db.tt/Qe6iLjpl
It's my personal dropbox folder. Please, feel free to mirror it and I'll update this OP, since I use my dropbox space to work.
Edit: leclanpim made an easy way to flash this system.img, putting a .bat file with nvflash.exe and the system itself in one zipped file, sharing it at https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bw9sO0__Wuu-THkzcHpaeERmMHM

The easiest way to get root, imho, is to flash bootloader, cwm, and then root zip from cwm. All files are small and no data loose at all.

Thank you louis, that's what I was looking for last weeks, then I found Homero's rooted 28G with some adds/mods. Now I'm downloading your system.img which is pure leaked 28G with the root as the only mod.
I'll tell you more.
Since some days I decided that from now on I'll test only custom 28G roms distributed in nvflash format: I nvflash the custom system.img, don't wipe my data, don't change bootloader, get rid of cwm and rom manager. It looks like the cwm round but I think it's faster and cleaner (maybe less risks of brick?), in addition, since I was used to copy my cwm backups on PC, using nvflash backup I have the full image of my rom straight on PC and I don't fill my external SD with neverending backups. Of course, using nvflash backups you cannot open and look inside like it is with cwm backups, but maybe some dev will find the way to do it.
I understand that SuperSkill, too, thought the same solution.
EDIT: just flashed from win7 and all is working.
Thanks, Man!...:good:

After trying V28E and G (Stefan's release with wkpark's unlocked bootloader and custom CWM) with different babsebands, I also decided to flash a "clean" stock V28G with the original bootloader, just to see if it resolves an in-call audio bug for me. So, this image came in handy, thank you! I backed up and restored my data partition using the nvflash toolkit. No problems with flashing, everything came up fine, with all my data intact. Hopefully, this setup will work with no audio issues until the ICS release (or a new leak... )
Thanks for this, now what's left are flashing it yes Walsh, I think this is a great way of supplying "roms". This method let's you keep locked bootloader and you can increase system partition, then flash only system.img with nvflash, correct? I'm just about to get Ubuntu into my desktop to extract the img and modify it as I like it......but what you guys have done lately are very respectful

Do not flash this over cm10!
It's not a Rom, it's a mod, as stated on topic. It should be used only on already flashed stock ICS.

First of all, this is NOT a ROM! This is the rooted system partition image for the clean leaked ICS Stock, which has a different partition layout from CM10. So, unless you already installed a stock V28E or V28G ROM and repartitioned your phone, it will not work for you.
Second, I would recommend always launching batch files from a command window instead of double-clicking them -- this way, you can always see all messages...
Oops... Didn't notice the previous reply, sorry!

Actually, you can! I have no idea how to do this on win box, but on linux it's very simple (that's how I pushed root on this img).
All you have to do is mounting it with loop in an empty folder, than you can not only look into the system dir but also modify it, and when you unmount it, your img will be updated (maybe even before, don't know).
Supposing you have the system.img in the folder were you're, just run as root:
mkdir modsystem
mount -o loop system.img ./modsystem
Than you can go into modsystem with any file manager, and you'll see that this folder is the system folder. There you can modify what you would to, and after that (be careful with permissions, they will be there after flashing), just run:
umount modsystem
Than you can flash it by nvflash and see the magic happening! And welcome to the free penguin world.

I'll tell the way I prefer, because in this way you flash Rom and baseband art the same time without losing any data.
-Download the v28g kdz image here. MD5SUM: a7d0e9763e4029484358f46936fe0099
-After downloading the kdz, flash it using instructions found here AND here. Note that on the instruction to edit the "C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\host", its actually "hosts", with an S at the end. Also use the www,zip attached for the instructions on the post (not the shttp3.zip).
-following these instructions, you should be able to flash the kdz without losing any data, even with the baseband flashed.
-after that, start your phone as usual, then follow the instruction on the first post to get your newly stock v28g rooted.
If you can't find the related topics, just be patient and I'll update here with the links after I get time on my pc.
edit: links added

-Search here in dev's for the Stephan's p990 leaker
-There, search for the v28g kdz image. I didn't test it, but I'd read that the link from lg is not working, so search for a mirror
-after downloading the kdz, flash it using instructions found on general section. It's not to much easy, but you can do it, just be patient.

As a possible alternative to the described method, I can suggest using a KDZ Converter for P970. It will extract two files from a KDZ (the ROM itself and the baseband), which you can then flash with SmartFlash. Contrary to what you may read, this tool DOES work for P990, as long as you don't select patching option for CWM (just answer "n"). This process is easier than flashing a KDZ, but some people prefer direct KDZ flashing (I am not aware of any differences in the end result, so, being lazy, I just do it the easier way ).
Decided to go this way as well to see if it prevents the loss of sound in calls. The cmd command did however not work for me, got stuck on 'nvflash started'. Very strange, first time I encountered something like that.
Anyway, thanks to leclanpim for the repack! And thank u for providing the image
Will now restore my Titanium backups and get back to business.

Dude, thanks a lot for your help. The trick for nvflashing the whole SystemImage work flawless under Windows7 X64 with the same set of commands as you write. Again, thanks.:good:
Louis, many thanks for your explainations.
If you can open system.img under linux and modify files as you already did rooting original 28G maybe, if you want to, you could do something more dangerous. Here it is.
download the latest CM10 nightly + JB Gapps,
merge gapps \system in CM10 \system,
replace the 28G system folder of your system.img with the created CM10+gapps \system folder and save a new CM10 system.img,
nvflash CM10 system.img
load battery and at last
with vol- and power you can do a hw factory reset and (maybe) you could boot new CM10 with locked bootloader, new partitions and without cwm recovery.
Do you think it could work?
LG Bugs?
Hi all,
I am currently on Stefan's deodexed V28g (with V28g BB & new unlocked bootloader)
I am having the following two little bugs (which I also had when I was on V28E odexed too)
1) Additional keyboard languages don't stay permanent. After reboot only english is checked.
2) Under Advanced Wifi settings"Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" options: Whichever of these two options I select ("Only when plugged in" or "Never (increases data usage)") the wifi disconnects OK when it should, but after device stays locked for a long time,
it never reconnects (as it did in GB). It is showed on but disconnected. You have to switch it off & then back on.
Probably they are LG's bugs but I would appreciate if someone being on this one (stock-stock ICS), could confirm.
Thank you

I had rooted my Optimus Black right from the first week i had bought in May 2012. Tried all the possible custom ROM's out there. Huexx's Zeus ROM was my favourite. But due to power problems (abrupt restarts and excessive heating during charging) I had to give my Black to service center for repair. I made sure that I switched back to stock ROM before I give it back to the service center.
Since then, I have been unable to ROOT it !!
Tried all the possible methods to root it:
CWM Injection, Smartflash resulted into BOOTLOOP's when i tried to flash older V10 and V20 firmwares. Only firmwares that worked were V20 F and V20 G.
This got me really frustrated as I just couldnt ROOT IT.
Today I flashed European V30 with the intention of ROOTING it with Unlockroot.
This time i was successful in ROOTING.
I installed Rom Manager, Flashed CLockwordmod Recovery. Rebooted into recovery and was greeted with a "LG Security Error" !!!! The phone just wont start.
What is going on ?? Is my bootloader locked ?? I dont know ??
Can someone please help me ??
Official ICS has bootloader locked.
lg putted a "crc check" on the bootloader so if its modified like your case, it gives a security error

Does that mean I am stuck on STOCK firmware from now on ?? This sucks.
I also came across things like for the Optimus G and Nitro.
Cant anything be done regarding this matter for the Black ?
Removing the very essence of andriod OS by LG by resorting to such stupidity really DISGUSTS me.

yes you cannot have cwm with that rom (atleast this easy)

Hi
This happens if you flash original v30b with smart flash and the only way to go back to GB is flash a patched v20 version....
And it directly first boots into CWM...now dont restart....just flash your backup from your memcard, this will bring your phone back alive....
You can try copy any other zip version in your memory card if u dont have backup....
The problem is original v30 formats the phone in some diff format.....
Flashing it back with CWM...brings it back alive....
If you already flashed patched version then u can try to enter CWM by console...adb reboot recovery......else do as mentioned above....

You can try unlock root.
To have CWM, you must flash a patched v20 using smart flash tool.
Please read N00bys guide.

Did you have Clockwork ROM Manager (CWM) installed from the Play Store or manually? I wonder if you had the most current version?

I downloaded the latest free version of Rom Manager from play
this is because actual recoveries are incompatible with ICS firmwares and will brick your device if you try to flash a recovery. you may try this mod to unlock the bootloader for getting a working recovery

Hi. I have Android 2.3.6 on my Galaxy Ace. I wanted to root it with upd_1.zip. I used the stock recovery. It said installation complete, so I rebooted. The Superuser icon has appeared in my app drawer so I was very happy that it was successful, but my SuperUser says that I haven't got SU binaries, so I haven't got any root access. I've searched for similar problems, but I didn't find any. What do I do now?

Sorry buddy, never heard of such an issue. I guess you try to Unroot and Root again. U may try xda for some better Root procedure or search my blog www.andro-sapien.blogspot.in.
Do let me know if it is sorted out by Re-Rooting.
pls help
So, I unrooted and rooted and there's the same issue. Original Superuser says - Checking available version failed, so I tried to delete the app data - that didn't work. I updated the Superuser and it says that I doesn't have SU binaries.

Try this:
https://hotfile.com/dl/178579596/5420e4d/acegingerroot.zip.html
or
https://hotfile.com/dl/180452656/3c2538d/gingerbred-2.3.6-root.zip.html
I actually have a similar sounding problem but arrived at it differently.
My phone had been rooted and working OK for over a year. At some point the latest superuser binary stopped functioning with adb wireless.
So I downloaded SuperSU a few months ago and it's different binary fixed that particular issue. So all was working fine until failing to update that binary today. I'm now in the same boat as you but don't have a clue how or why.
This 2 files are the same as my upd_1.zip. The very same. My upd_1.zip has xbin with busybox, su etc. but it doesn't want to be flashed for some reason. The only files in my xbin folder (in the phone) are : busybox, dexdump, although I flashed the other needed binaries. What is this? Is this my phone's fault?
@edit : Can I flash CWM without those binaries?

Yes you can, and then you can try to flash root again.
If not you can flash CF-Root (only for Gingerbread!!) maybe it works :S
1º Flash via recovery CWM
http://www.mediafire.com/download/u331vcwkr36c28n/CF-Root-S5830-v3.7-b84.zip
2º Flash via CWM APP, it'll fix the bootanimation
when your android will boot, go to CWM app (in your drawer) and select "Flash kernel" and select this file
http://dfiles.eu/files/1sfl9qotm
I flashed CWM Recovery, and now when I select install zip from sdcard and select root file, it says error 7 - update aborted.
@edit - I found the AceGingerRoot.zip. Is it legit and can I install it on GT-S5830 (it has different MD5 than upd_1.zip and root.zip).

,,,
I've always used Acegingeroot to get root permissions... do what you consider more solutions, impossible
Acegingerroot didn't worked. No errors at all, but still no root access.

What rom are you using?
Is GT-S5830 your device model?
Did you try CF-Root b84?
Have you got enough free internal memory?
if you have Thinkfree installed, try to delete it flashing this file before flashing root file:

I use the stock ROM - GINGERBREAD.XWKTQ (from the Polish mobile network Play Mobile)
Yes, I have GT-S5830 (checked twice in settings and on box)
No, i didn't tried it.
I have 54 MB left.
I have ThinkFree.
Is ThinkFree Office the problem?

The last firmwares haven't enough space in system partition to push correctly root files, I don't know about your rom, I'm using KTM form Spain as base and I've never had a trouble, but if your problem is that your rom is using all the internal memory (system partition) you couldn't push root files, so you can try deleting ThinkFree from the system partition and then try to root your phone...

Hey, but when I have got CWM flashed, can I flash a custom ROM without those binaries? I just wanted to root my Ace because I wanted to have ICS.

umm I think, yes... I've read post where people have flashed CWM and then a custom rom, but I wouldn't advise you to do it directly... anyway you can try it if you want and report then what happened
Actually, I'm gonna wait till more people on forum will help me. I don't want to risk so much. I don't know what can I do.

LOL! Well thought out! I wouldn't do it either
if upd_1, acegingeroot, and cf-root didn't work and you want to root your device, the best way is to use Odin and to flash a fresh stock rom which it allows you to flash this files

OK. I'm gonna do that, but can you post me some links with download and instructions for my Ace?
And - if I flash a new ROM with Odin, will my CWM recovery disappear?
Oh, I found my ROM on Samfirmware from Play Mobile (XWKTQ 2.3.6), so there's no point of installing it right? I need just a fine ROM with polish language.
EDIT - I almost forgot - I didn't tried the Delete_thinkdroid.zip thingy. I'm gonna flash it now and post the results.
EDIT 2 - WHAT?! I flashed Delete_thinkdroid.zip and it didn't even deleted it. I still have ThinkFree and it's working! Guess i'm gonna need that new ROM. It seems that my ROM just refuses to use recovery flashing in any way.
