Screen flickers then phone dies while browsing over 3G - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Phone is on stock ICS 4.0.3. It's 10 months old and only exhibited the issue just recently.
While browsing using Dolphin over 3G the screen flickers while the page is still loading. The battery charge starts dropping quickly until the phone turns itself off. When the phone is turned on again after a few minutes the battery level is back at half. A check of the battery usage history shows a very steep drop followed by a rise back to mid levels even without charging. A full charge usually lasts 2-3 hours of continuous browsing.
Changed to Chrome and it still flickers. I charged it while off overnight once and will continue doing so until it behaves. Any other suggestions?
Our service has been erratic for a while though. The provider is upgrading some base stations. Could this be a factor?

It seems to be a battery issue

I'll try that. It does keep a good charge if left sleeping. I checked the usage and it was awake only intermittently with the internet off.
There are instances where signal strength drops though that's why I also suspected the provider. Games also do not affect the battery that much.

Got a shot of the battery usage:

The steep drop happens while browsing. What's weird is that the battery magically recovers some of its charge after 3g is turned off.
The battery is also not flush against the chassis at the bottom part. It seems to have a slight bulge on both sides. Oh well hope the warranty is worth something

[SOLVED] Screen flickers then phone dies while browsing over 3G
Bought a new OEM battery for around 40USD with a 6 month warranty. It's behaving itself for now. Problem is the battery I got was produced in the same month as the original battery. Hope it lasts longer.
The sales person said it could have been caused by a few bad habits:
- charging while using the phone (guilty)
- charging overnight (guilty but I thought the charger turns itself off after the battery's full?)
So now I turn off the phone while charging.

I have the same issue of the screen flickering and as I see from the above posts, it is a battery issue. My battery has bulged A LOT. My phone is currently at the Samsung service center for the same problem. Will Samsung replace the battery under warranty? My 1-year warranty expires on November 20 (6 days from today)

It looks like Samsung only warranties batteries for 6 months

CONFIRMED: 2900 mAh Extended Battery Enables Kickstand hack
While I was surprised with the decent battery of the Revolution, I've grown to dislike having my phone constantly tethered to a Zagg Sparq, thus bought the $49 extended battery from Verizon.
Much to my delight, the pretty massive battery enables the Revolution to stand up all by itself. Not to mention almost doubles its external-power-source independence. Hoorah!

Triskite I just got the extended battery last night. And I was wondering when you first put it to charge, how long before the battery was full the first time? Last night I put it on the charger at about 2:45am @ 19% left and this morning woke up at 7:45am with only 67% charged.
taking way long to charge atm

yeah dude i had it at around 20% at midnight, woke up at 9AM and it was 75% charged.
This was through the ZaggSparq, which is supposed to do it at the same rate as the wall.... but... I'm hoping that isn't the case.
Were you using the included usb cable & wall->usb adapter?
I will try with that tomorrow night and report...
Definitely needs to be able to charge in 8 hours for me to keep the Revolution in general.
Does anyone think slow charging is something that is possible to fix with a different ROM

I'm using the charger that I used on my droid X. I also use a regular charger trying to get it fully charged and same thing.

the hunchback has 65% life left and it's 12:49AM.
It has been on without any recharge since 8AM (technically yesterday morning)- I made lots of calls with google voice callback (requires 3g), did lots of web browsing, phone optimizing, and other things like phone hacking (got dedicated search key working with google finally, following xda walkthrough), etc.
I did have Juice Defender on for about half the day- just to turn off 3G when screen is locked (PS does anyone know a better way? AutomateIt doesn't work reliably)-> but it would sometimes take a while to turn 3G back on...
To follow-up with the previous inquiry, it charged from 17% at 1AM to 90% at 6:30AM-> meaning 90% charge in 8 hours which is almost good enough.
It's like carrying around 2 phones in size and in battery life. which I suppose I prefer to only 1.
65% is overkill, though... I will turn off JD

it got through the day (10% left after 12-15 hrs)... but of course, there is no lte in this city for another week.
also, as i mentioned, 3g would not be re-enabled very often using it- for one reason or another
That battery is an absolute monstrosity, but would come in real handy for a ski trip or road trip...
With the extended battery are there any belt clips or cases that fit it?
that's ugly as hell. why can't they make an extended battery that looks good.. at least make the back cover look presentable.

I agree. I would love to see an extended battery cover that curved along the phone like the regular one, not hard edges like this. I'm assuming they can't on top because of the camera, but why not the bottom? I think that would make it looke at least 10x better.

is that it? anyone else use it yet?
shame i was getting quite excited about it
^thats good to know, i guess. i had been considering it,but then ive had bad experiences with this spare battery that was given to me by the buyer. It's a cheap "Speed" china brand, and it really really sucks. like 3 hours and its done.
If i would ever get another battery i would always make sure its motorola, just from my experience with that horrible battery.

Ahh what a waste and a ripoff then. I got an OEM backup and stand alone charger from amazon for under $10 and it's been great. Of course both are OEM. Then I had to get a replacement phone, so now I have 3 total batteries. Keep one on the charger and one with me so that's a reason why I just didn't order it, good thing. But you can find the OEM batteries for about $5.
Thanks for the heads up it's nice to know.

Hey, you mind posting a picture of how the phone looks with the extended battery cover on it?
Got a similar one off ebay, said "Cameron Sino" on the battery, some holographic backing and serious looking packaging. With decent english! XD
No dropped calls like another cheap-o battery I got, that battery also let the phone turn on 5 or 10 times after turning off. And sometimes it would hang doing nothing, had a dead phone in my pocket more than once.
Battery is twice as heavy as the original, back end is plastic.
Not sure about the two copper pads, they are now no longer connected. Reception is unchanged though, not sure what the pads are for.
Lasted me 36 hours to dead this time, second charge.
I've played grave defense two hours, surfed and left sync and wifi/bt etc all on to spend power as fast as possible.
I barely got 16 hours on the now 1 year old original battery, with sync off and no games. So this is a massive improvement.
Shows 5% after four hours though, I've just deleted the battery calibration info, hoping it'll solve itself eventually.
Voltage is 4.0 volts when phone says 5% so phone doesn't report it correctly.
Phone turns off normally and then phone won't start, just like original battery.

There may be copies out, I noticed the URLs you gave have pics of batteries that says "XELL" and the other is unbranded... Damn jungle.
Wow, 2300 mAh. We can enjoy for longer with XT720
Well.. Problem persists with % being incorrect. I get 5% after 6-7 hours, and it will last happily for 48 hours with gaming etc.
Problem is phone just suddenly dies without warning, so I've returned to stock. :S
Battery Monitor Widget shows 2478mah measured, and weirdly, shows 1325mAh on stock battery.. Which would indicate it ISN'T worn..?
the ram is not enough. who can make swap?

Cool, as new batteries go i expect you got to charge them a couple of times to get the correct usage average. first drain still surviving, @30% now but that was with a few benchmarks after testing a few things for Stonebear last night. will probably start charging again at about 12% later today.

Reason why i dont get one of those batteries is because i dont want to carry around a Nokia P4000, start to have hip problems carrying something that big around. ( rather just carry one of these so i can charge my phone and psp on the go) that way i can still have my sleek O2x without the bulky back cover.

Final drain test on new battery,
full charge gives me 4180mV
thats at a average of 1746mA +/- 24mA
will look into performance and battery life now that i've charged it a third time. and report back
I bought a "2400 mAh" battery from MyTrendyPhone (large Nordic/European online store for phone accessories).
It turned out to be 2800 mAh. Probably mislabeled by the store rather than the manufacturer. It's actually this one:
http://shop.onni-tec.de/Handy-Akkus...imus-Speed-Li-Ion-fat-Rueckdeckel::10090.html
Does anyone have any experience with this particular battery? Will do some non-scientific, subjective testing of course. Bought it on a whim because I got tired of my O2X dying halfway through the day (I'm quite a heavy user, it's literally down to 40-50% by lunch time). If it isn't much of an improvement, no great loss. It makes the phone more "substantial" but the difference isn't that great and the back cover seems to be quite good quality (also it offers far better protection of the camera lens than the original cover).

Is there another battery replacement that is good?
Usage Test
That Battpit Battery, 1800mAh.
Under medium to heavy usage.
listening to music 3-4 hours, Internet browsing, average 5-6 hours, videos 20 minutes, 5 calls about a minute each, 15 - 20 texts. bit of wifi, but most of the internet browsing was done under 3g.
i'll get a more standby focused battery life over the next couple of days.
ordered a 2400 mah battery.
should arrive in 2-5 days.
gonna make a review video.
I used a duplicate high capacity barrios like this and after fee days my phone used to drain without any use also and it used to heat up also went to lg care they told mother board is gone due to.difference in voltage maintenance as I used not the stock one they told use only stock batteries other high capacity battery will ruin your phone hardware...my phone used to die in Lees than 10 hours whether I use out or not...now it last more than 2 days those people who were telling there phone last more than a day I used to think they always lied.got my mother board changed from lg cost me around 50$ but more now phone is like brand new last more than 2 days and stand by station is like 1% in 8 hours..but stock batteries and go to lg care ask them is there any problem in your phone hardware ....trust me that's the solution

Btw, we are not trying to give you a hard time. It just that we have discussed so many extra capacity batteries (OEM slim footprint), and every one was found to be a lie. You will be lucky to get something at 3100 mAh, while a lot of 4200 mAh batteries turned out to be 2500 mAh. I actually had external hardware setup with V/A meter draining batteries with a clip attached to terminals on one side while simulating a phone load on another side with high wattage resistors. It didn't look too good.

Looks like you are hardly using the phone with 1 hr screen on time ... especially if that's the majority of the usage. How about doing a real test... moderate to heavy usage, texting , youtube, internet browsing , music and movie play back. That battery will read MUCH LOWER.
I good suggestion for a test, run free Nova battery tester: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.NanoDinamics.NovaTester
I wouldn't trust the accuracy of mAh calculation, but it runs very CPU/GPU intense test to drain your battery. Do it with your stock battery, and then with deep stretch battery to compare the screen on and other results. As a relative test for comparison it should work. I think the test runs for about 2hr, so once it done run it again, starting from 100% battery until you run it down to 5%.
Right now I'm running at normal usage. I do watch tons of You Tube vids. Read tech reviews. Go through my Flipboard, Taptu news feeds. Check up on XDA, Facebook, Google+, get calls from wife. Internet browse. And download apps. While looking for reviews on this battery I came across a thread in the Note 3 forum mentioning a Deep Stretch battery and they would like to see my results too. And I'll check out that app. Been looking for a good battery stat app. I'll post more screen shots at 50%.

Either give the app a shot or set up a system similar to the one that Vectron did.
Basically you need a standard to drain a stock and the magical battery. An exact same standard. Browsing videos and just generally using the phone will have a different load from day to day, so you're definitely not going to get a standard and fair comparison. Screenshots will be meaningless since they aren't an exact representation of usage, data connectivity, cell tower searching, etc.
Well I'm hoping they're better than stock. The battery has 4750 mah on it. If it's fake. I'll never buy a Deep Stretch battery again. Just doing a normal usage test. Then I'll try vectron's suggestion tomorrow morning. I'll fully charge both batteries and run Nova battery tester on both.
Update at 25%.
5% Last one for today.
Nova battery test tomorrow. Samsung OEM vs Deep Stretch.

Picture of back of battery. Front just has Deep Stretch Logo.

From those stats, the figures are poor for 4600 mAH
I already get 7 hours of screen time on OEM battery on stock fimware when no tuning of the kernel.
Do Not Remove . I Wonder Why : )
I removed the label. Its just all silver with some numbers and a 3.35 v stamped on the side. I googled the numbers and got nothing.
Update:
Sorry I thought I could manage some more tests today but was exhausted after work.
Running stock deodexed.
Standard test failed.
When short tests completed the app closed itself but managed to keep results. Did two short tests on "4750 mah battery"
Will do a long test later and hopefully it completes. In the meanwhile Im going to look for similar testing apps.
Edit: Actually Im going to do a short test on oem battery to see accuracy of calculations.

Seems at least as good as OEM battery but for it to actually be 33% better you should get at least 9hrs screen on time.

Battery problem solved - by replacing battery.

Hi,
I've tried fixing my LG G Watch R for some time now and I even thought I've solved "the problem" at one point.
But after several attempts of trying to flash a "this will fix it"-firmware, I ended up buying a new battery. And with my old battery my best battery life was about an hour and a half, with this new battery and no new firmware, it is still M1D63G I now how about 1 and a half days of battery life.
So... I don't want to kill any dreams of fixing the LG G Watch R trough software or any other forms of "voodoo magic", but I think a new battery is the only way to solve this.
Thanks for the feedback and the interesting info.

I'm also facing issues and I narrowed it down to the battery. My watch won't go past the Android Wear screen without shutting off. I've ordered a replacement battery from FoneJoy at it should be here tomorrow. Pricey but seems to be my only option.
I'll keep you posted on if it did the trick.

I was a bit worried that the new battery wouldn't fix the problem - and that I would end up throwing £20 into the trash bin. But after the battery replacement, it feels like a brand new watch. The battery life is even better than I remembered.
I wish I paid the much. I had to pay $50+ because I live in the US. The package finally arrived! I'm stoked. I should be home in about 30 minutes. Hopefully it's the battery and not the motherboard.
Did you have to charge the battery for awhile or was it at least halfway charged?

Mine was halfway charged, but worked well. Solved my problem of 3 to 5 hour battery life from full charge. Back to great!

As sjancura wrote, the battery should work out of the box. But it needs charging to really shine.
Spareslg also has the battery in stock. Don't know how their shipping prices are compared to fonejoy.
This watch is really killing me. I put the brand new battery from FoneJoy in and it works a little longer than it did before but shortly after I remove it from the cradle it shuts off. Smh.
I heard of this watch having a temperature sensor and I'm wondering if it's built in to the motherboard, if so has anyone found a way to disable it? This is pissing me off.

Really?
Does your watch suddenly shutdown when taken off the cradle or it displays the "Shutting down..." alert then shutsdown?
Makes me really worried, I too just spent $50 aud on a g watch r battery and I really hope I can fix my g watch r so its not a paper weight anymore...

Disappointing. After I changed to my spareslg battery I haven't had a single shutdown and my battery life is awesome.
Also I've changed to a 500mA charger. The LG charger delivered with the watch is 800mA and even that is a a bit much for a 410mAh battery.

My watch just usually just went black after removing it from the cradle.

The watch works 100% whenever I put it in the freezer but as soon as it starts warming up it shuts down. I downloaded the "systems info" app and the temperature sensor thinks the watch is overheating so it dies right after.
Soon as I repeat the steps of putting the watch in the freezer for 30 seconds it works perfectly fine again. I'm upset because I'm already $70+ deep into it. $50+ for the battery and $20 for the tools to open the watch.
Now I keep lurking on eBay and Craigslist hoping I find a broken screen Urbane since the Urbane's motherboard is said to work for our watch.

I agree ... I spent a week trying everything to get Android to re-set its battery levels and eventually decided to just try replacing the battery. Before I did this, turning on wifi or selecting various third party watches just killed the watch on the spot. Now every thing is working and I get about 1 1/2 days average battery life. Here's a screenshot to show how it is now:
