Weird behavior while using a non-oem usb cable - Motorola Droid 4

So I am trying to root my d4 but I wasn't given a stock usb cable. Instead, I am using the usb cable that came with my lg revolution. But when I plug it into my laptop & d4, all of the sudden the phone goes into settings and starts selecting and deselecting settings seemingly at random. Is that something to do with the cable?

Okay, I figured out what was going on. Here's what happened in case any of you experience the same problem:
It was the cable like I was thinking. Sometimes when I hooked the D4 up to the computer with the LG phone's cable, it caused the phone to bog down (maybe it was busy trying to communicate with the laptop and the cable just wasn't compatible so it kept trying and kept trying, etc.). I'd gone into settings to turn USB debugging on and when I swiped along the screen was when it started to lag. So, the D4 couldn't tell that what I'd done was swipe my finger over the screen to scroll down. Instead, it thought I'd selected everything in the path of the finger swipe. But it reacted so slowly I couldn't tell that's what was going on because I'd swiped again resulting in yet more selections/deselections of settings. And then for 20 seconds after swiping it was still catching up and toggling settings on and off. Rinse and repeat...
I borrowed a Motorola cable from a Droid X2 user and everything went smoothly. My phone was recognized, drivers installed, yadda, yadda, and I'm now rooted!

I think it's actually interference created by an unstable DC charging current that messes with the sensitivity of the touchscreen. I have the same problem with my D4 if I use some of the crappier USB wall chargers. I've found the Apple iPhone / iPad chargers work pretty well and most any USB micro cable seems to work pretty well. it could just be less than stellar DC voltage coming from your laptop. Maybe you were running off of battery in one of those instances or maybe wall power, or maybe you were plugged into a different wall socket or at a different house / place with a different mains electrical feed?

Thanks. That sounds plausible. I was using my laptop on every attempt but I don't remember when I was plugged in and when I wasn't. I'll have to experiment a little and see what happens.

I've now tried it in every combination I could think of...connected to a laptop plugged in/not plugged in to the wall, connecting to a desktop...using each cable in each situation, and using a couple of wall chargers. The only thing that made a difference for me was the cable. The moto usb cable works fine as do both the lg and off-brand wall charger cables I have. The problem only comes about when using the lg usb cable with the d4...then stuff gets freaky. No big deal, though. I can easily avoid that combination. Just found it interesting/weird.

ATT Tilt freezes when plugged into USB!!!

Help! My tilt freezes up suddenly and then reacts extremely slow to any inputs. I will push a button on the touch screen and it takes the phone about 3-4 seconds to react to the input. Any ideas on what may be wrong and how to go about fixing them? Also, the phone has problems every month or so about going into the 4 color screen when booting up and not starting properly (not sure if this has anything to do with it...very annoying!!). Usually happens though when the battery is drained. Any help would be excellent!
if by USB you mean the computer's USB port, is ActiveSync syncing when the tilt slows down? because I believe that's normal when ActiveSync is actively working in the background...
USB meaning plugged into my laptop...
...and active sync is not even recognizing my device. Everything i do on my phone is delayed a couple of seconds. When i unplug it from the computer through the USB cable everything runs at normal speed.
Another Problem
I tried a hard reset through clear storage (copied all of my contacts to the sim card since my phone was not syncing) and when the phone booted back up it started in the infamous 4 color screen (anyone know what the actual name for this screen is?) and won't turn back on properly!

I got a similar issue with my Kaiser. Pluged it via sync cable to my laptop/PC, and it would freeze both sides (PC and Kaiser). It is definitely a mini-usb issue, a pin is bend, creating a bad contact. If I slightly move the plug in the mini usb, it will eventually come to life. If the cable moves to the right again, it will freeze again. This isn't happening with a wall/car charger however.
Could be you're facing the same problem. Did you recently damage the mini-usb (by inserting the stylus inside instatd of the soft-reset button, like most of the people lol).
Thanx!
Now that i examine it, the USB is slightly damaged on the inside..will try a different one...
Will try when phone actually boots up properly.....
Still Freezing
Got my phone to finally boot up (after numerous attempts) and I used a brand new USB cable and it still is going reaalllllllyyy sloooooooowwww. It also won't sink with my computer. Anyone, please HELP!

Actually, I didn't mean that the cable was damaged, but the mini-usb plug from the Tilt itself. Have you tried holding the cable while pluged right or left and see if tht Tilt reacts normally ?
That didn't seem to make any difference either. When I plug it into a regular charger it works normally.
New Discovery!
My headphones now do not work either. To recap, connect phone through USB to my computer, the phone moves as fast as my grandmother but though it still charges the battery. My regular phone charger works fine and the phone moves as fast as Micheal Phelps. Though my head phones perform sexually like my grandfather, they don't work at all.
I don't get it!
This may be the most unreliable phone I have ever experienced in my entire life. Now the head phones work after I put them in very slowly but when I take them back out of the mini USB port the regular speakers do not play and sound. When I plug the head phones back in I hear the sound through the ear buds. On a more disturbing note, I guess my grandfather is taking cialis. My mini USB port is just messed up!

[Q] Lost USB data connectivity to computers.

New member here, so please be kind to me
As of this morning after pulling my LG Rev off my wall charger. I go to plug it into my desktop to move some files and what not only to find the phone is not recognizing that I'm hooked to a computer.
Thinking it was a cable issue I swapped between cables and nothing, rebooted, even did the old-battery pull, and still nothing!
However with each cable it acts as if I'm still plugging it into a wall/car charger. Only shows charging and nothing else, the computer doesn't even make a "USB" connected sound, let alone the computer doesn't even see the phone.
Did you reboot the computer and the phone?
Sent from my VS910 4G using XDA Premium App
I have, let alone tried it out on several computers at home all with the same outcome.
I didn't install any app, other then did a TiB last night prior to putting it on my wall charger(only way to get a good overnight charge vs USB).
I was planning on trying to install the Revolt ROM today. Come to hook it up to my computer this morning, and now this.
I've been having all sorts of odd issues, like the Verizon OTA update doesn't install. Gets about 30% on the updating/unpacking then pops up a {!} and reboots. So at least once a day my phone will reboot for that.
I currently am rooted BTW and i have tried to un-root and even let the update attempt to go, but no avail.
NOTE: I did notice something else just a few min ago, on the stock LG ROM at least. Normally regardless what source Car/wall/usb was being used to charge the phone, It would show both red/green on the LED while charging/charged. Now its only showing green regardless of it being charged/charging.
I think I may just do an exchange from Amazon wireless. Seeing how its within my 30day window yet to do so.
You did change your connection to mass storage when you connected to your computer?
Sent from my VS910 4G using XDA Premium App
Yeah, played with all the settings and swapping modes.
Just for kicks did a factory reset still nothing.
Curious, is there any way to UN-root w/out the ability to use the USB?
Well I got my new Revo, and it came pre-updated already
And major problems since I've had it, constant reboots, almost always losing connection. WiFi wouldn't stay connected either, even if I'm 5 ft from any router/AP.
And I've tried my best to push back to the pre-update, but no avail!
So I've gotten a hold of Amazon wireless and they are doing an exchange for me, I'm going to jump on board of the HTC TB. Hopefully I'll have a better sailing experience.
BTW, any one want an LG extend battery cheap? lol
usb prob on mine just fixed
omg...I just had a similar problem, except mine popped up on my phone saying that the factory cable is plugged in and can not be used to switch usb modes. I was like...what the frick man...this is the same cable I have always used. I tried alll sorts of crap to no avail. Finally, I reinstalled the lg drivers on my laptop and rebooted both my phone and laptop and voila! It all worked again, using the same factory cable that my phone and laptop just had a so-called problem with. Hope that works for you too...I know how frustrating things can be.
had a very similar issue several days ago. all of a sudden, the phone was no longer recognized. tried everything (different cables, different computers, different operating systems, toggled several different options in settings)......to no avail. had to take it back to best buy....exchanged it for a new revo...everything is good now (including the fact that it was loaded with v4).

Screen issues when connecting USB/Headphone/HDMI?

Has anyone noticed an issue when connecting a USB, Headphone or HDMI cable to the D3, where the touch screen doesn't respond properly?
I had the same issue with the DX when I upgraded it to Gingerbread and the DX2. When plugging in a cable (even brand new cables), the touch screen doesnt want to respond. To use the touch screen, I have to unplug it first.
Since this is the 4th phone I have had this issue and it "seems" to have started with my DX when upgrading to Gingerbread, I wonder if it is a Gingerbread issue?
So no one else has noticed this issue? It is really irritating. I had the same issue with the DX/DX2 desktop dock. I had the dock replaced with the D3 desktop dock and have the same issue!
As soon as I dock, the screen doesnt want to respond correctly to touch. The car dock seems to work fine though.
I'm having the same problem and it was there pre and post root. When I am in HDMI mode, the screen is very laggy and sometimes completely unresponsive. If I unplug the HDMI the issue immediately resolves.
i've seen this sometimes, thought it might be the angle im holding it when the USB cable is plugged in.
Doesn't always happen tho and the dock works fine for me currently.
-smc
I have the issue with every charger except my car chargers... I also notice the problem if I plug into the headphone jack or HDMI port.
With the Droid X and X2, I had a similar issue (3 different phones) but with the Droid 3, I notice that not only does it not want to respond but it responds as if I touched somewhere else... It even responds as if I touched the screen when I am not even near the phone...
I took it in to Verizon and surprising enough, I was told it was normal!!!! Augh...
I do not have this issue. Just tried headphones, wall charger, and USB to my laptop and the screen was just as responsive as when the phone is unplugged. If you can narrow down a pattern I will gladly test more situations.
I noticed this when I was plugged into a brookstone international adapter that has a usb charger. Plugged into an old BB charger or my stock and it worked fine.
Actually I was in a bed and breakfast and my phone started to work on its own. Like it was haunted!!! Really crazy. I was able to repeat it everytime I connected this charger.

Have you tried a different setups then the ones you use? Like at a buddies or neighbor? If the issue following you around it could be a sign. As a former poster said with the charger cables the touchscreen goes crazy. I had a cheap charger that froze/slowed up my screen. I think it may be a grounding/noise issue (from a laymen not an EE).
HDMI
I've had issues with the HDMI cable plugged in. The video doesn't seem to be a problem, but the sound is very choppy on my HDTV. This was the case with both my wife's and my D3. I wonder if it is a setting on the phone or my 42" JVC TV is a POS.
I just had my D3 replaced due to an issue with the GPS. The replacement has the same issue. As soon as I plug it into any charger, the touch screen starts acting flaky.
When I plug it into my desktop dock (with or without power), the screen starts acting as if I had been pressing it and selects random things on the screen.
I have found that if I push a USB plug tight into the charging socket on the phone, the screen works fine.
Is it possible that Android 2.3 uses the extra pins in the USB and HDMI cables? If so, can this be disabled?
Use the cable and charger that came with your phone, if you're still having problems after that then you have an actual problem.
Hi,
I also have this issue sometimes when I charge the phone (original US charger with EU adapter). The screen responds slowly.

[Q] Galaxy note not charging

Hi,
First off, I have a non rooted, stock Galaxy note. It's not modded in any way.
The problem started occurring yesterday, all was just fine before. Since then, it won't charge no matter what USB cable or charger I use.
1) Phone on
- I plug the charger to the phone : nothing. The phone doesn't register being connected to the OEM wall-charger.
- I connect the phone using the OEM USB cable to my computer (tryed 3 different computers) : Nothing.
I also tried another charger and several USB cables : no luck.
2) Phone off
- I plug the charger / I connect my phone to a computer using USB cable : the phone boot up and doesn't charge the battery.
Any thought ?
Thx in advance.
Try using some compressed air to clean out the usb port on the Galaxy Note. I had a similar issue with an iPhone once and there ended up being a piece of lint stuck on 1 of the contacts which made it unable to charge. Could be the case with your phone. Other than that contact Samsung and see what they can do for you.
Thx for the advice.
I'll try that out and call over Samsung.
Try factory reset if that could help..

Update:
I tried a micro USB Host Cable (OTG Cable) and it's working fine : recognized and plugged in USB stick is working fine.
Also, I tried a factory reset after backuping my data. All went fine but sadly the problem is still there : no charging.
More update:
After two days, It started working again as if it never happened.
Still wondering what might have caused it
Might be the dust that settled on the battery pins and the contacts on your phone.. happens some times .. glad its back to work.. poor thing..

Happened to me too! It wouldn't charge until I turned off the phone. It worked after I cleaned the phone and usb cable's metal parts--sorry no correct jargon for this--with rubbing alcohol. Make sure there's no lint left from the cleaning.
Yup, had this. On charge with stock charger in the mains. Battery dropping fast, back (top) getting warm. I turned the screen off, left it for 5 mins. Looked again, it was 2% less!
Reboot fixed it.
There did not seem to be any rogue program using the CPU, but I now have a meter and a better logger to examine this if it occurs again. I assume the system got into a loop somewhere, although the phone was normally responsive.

Happening to my phone as well right now. I was worried that the battery is dying so I got a spare online. But it doesn't make sense that its charging and know that it is on one state and not the other.
I panicked so I replaced Rocket Rom with Cassie's. It's still doing this.
Have you guys checked if there is a weird smell from your battery? I thought that was something to look at but dont all batteries smell like that?
galaxy note is experiencing the same hardware problems as galaxy s2 phones. I am very pissed off at samsung. I bought a new galaxy note in dominican republic and after one month of delicate use the phone developed charging problems. Drive mode would start automatically or the phone would shut off all by itself and a battery removal reset would turn the phone on again. then finally, the phone would stay in charging mode even after the usb charge cable is removed. the phone would discharge quickly and then would not turn on. I finally gave the phone to repair dept at claro phone company. they would not fix it and are just showing me a middle finger. Now I guess, I would have to learn to change the charging port myself. After seeing galaxy s2 videos, I see many ribbon contacts would get corroded and need to be cleaned frequently. Many phones were just less than 2 months old and had so much corrosion on the contacts. this is bad design and I think the high current draw for a dual core phone of that huge screen size is causing all kinds of electrical corrosion on the contacts inside the phone. this sucks majorly as I loved the phone when I had it working fine. Now I think I have bought a problem with my saved cash. I will try to repair my own phone soon as I get it back from the repair dept.
My Galaxy Note is doing a similar thing. Not all the same symptoms, but a few similarities.
The other night, when the charger was plugged in the phone kept changing it's mind whether it was plugged in or not - probably every few seconds I was getting the chime it makes when you plug the phone in. I eventually managed to charge the phone by turning it off, removing the battery, replacing it, plugging the charger in, waiting for it to start charging, then turning it on.
Today my phone was trying to tell me it was charging when it wasn't even plugged in to anything!
As with the above post, my phone has been getting hot occasionally and the drive mode has started by itself a few times.
I've used three chargers and four cables.
I'll be taking it along to where I bought it from later on today.
Battery not charging
G Note Battery is not charging .. same problem as of 1st post.
Changed usb cables, chargers, thru PC, laptop, direct wall, cleaning etc
Every thing fails. one month old set ?
OMG, glad to know I'm not the only one. Bought a Galaxy Note from a brazilian network provider (VIVO) and after 1 week of usage I'm experiencing the same problems as you guys.
My phone will only charge when it is powered off and USB connection does not work anymore (even in download mode). Before the problem onset, I noticed some MTP connection and SD Card rescanning without connecting to the PC.
Did a factory reset and got no results. Downloaded Odin Mobile and flashed stock rom and the problem persists.
Has anyone found a fix or the cause for this?
Thanks!
Missing my old Galaxy S...
Strange! After a full night charge, now I can unplug and plug the battery and continue charging from where I stop without turning it off.
I can now get beeps when connecting to PC. It show MTP-Inicialization in the Note screen but I have no access to to Note partitions in Windoes Explorer.
Update: One more strange thing just happened now.
Went to college and left it charging. When I came back at night, tried to connect the Note to the PC and everything is working ok now.
What?!?! Now I'm confused. How can I send it to warranty now? I think I'll have to wait a couple more days.
issue as well
That is my 3rd galaxy note, first one screen cracked, second dont ask me why it was not modified at all but it was so sluggish and froxze all the time, my 3rd one it is rooted device and i have similar issue...I am thinking is it because i was charging it from my wife's htc one phone? I thought they would have the same pins...anyway it is doomed, i tried so many chargers and problem not solved
ok i can comfirm to everyone that i have fixed the problem by buying contact cleaner spray and sprayed inside the usb and beautiful all back to normal!
Nooo..
Have a charging problem as well :/ It detects the charging cable and shows the battery icon with the circle about to charge. But it just turns off before it starts charging, turns on shows the icon again, turns off, turns on, shows the battery icon and so on. I have tried with two different chargers. For me i looks like the voltage is too low? Maybe the battery needs a jumpstart? I'll just leave it in the charger and see what happens. Suggestions welcome
Edit: It's just two weeks old, damn it. Last night I used it untill the battery was empty. That is why I think the voltage is so low it doesnt accept charge.
Edit2: Fixed! Puh! I was right. Battery needed a higher mah to start the charging. Leaving the post as it is for future reference.
same problem here, however it charges from my laptop... how strange?

[Q] Connecting Moto X to Computer Issue

So, every time I connect my Moto X to my Windows Laptop via USB, it always keeps plugging and unplugging itself as if I was doing it. The phone icon appears and it begins to try and load the memory storage and then it just vanishes and "unplugs itself". As of now, I just unplug the USB cable from one slot of the laptop and then insert it in another, and it fixes the issue.
Now, that doesn't work either. What's the problem and how can I fix it?
Chances are it's one of a few things.
Bad cable. Bad ports on laptop. Or the port on your phone.
I'd start with some different cables.
Then try a different pc.
If it's the phone, then that's a problem. The phone ports are fragile. My daughters Gtab3 has a wonky port, cause I'm sure the plastic tab was snapped by her using the tablet while it's plugged in. So now to charge it, it will only work sitting still on whatever and I have to jiggle the cable to get it just right. It's only help by the wires inside now.

I repaired the Moto X Device Manager and now I'm using a different cable. So far. so good. I'll report back in a few days to see if anything changes.
