Ok. Can you point me to some thorough instructions? A lot of the instructions I see leave parts out or assume some prior knowledge.

Check the development section. Im working on CM10 now (the 31-10 build), which has JB. No problems. I just wanna say, read before you do, just to close out some problems.
Maybe its easier if you ask your problems and someone can answer

I so depend on my tablet that I don't want to try it without knowing what I'm doing. If I run into problems and can't use it I'll be screwed.
I have an i957 so the steps are a little different I think. Is that what you have?
Hmm, i just followed the steps in the CM10 and its working. I have a p7310 model...
The steps are the same. I have an i957 and am running the cm 10 from nrvate. Just make sure you have a Rom specifically for the i957. Very happy with the Rom. You can find it in the i957 development section.

I must be dense. I don't see the steps!
This is all I see:
Use TWRP, factory reset and wipe /system if you are coming from another ROM. Don't forget to install google apps http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.ph...on/Google_Apps
And that doesn't tell me enough.....
Start by looking for instructions on how to install a recovery and root your device. CWM and TWRP are two recoveries, you'll use one of the two. These are flashed through Odin. Once you have a recovery installed then you can flash a rom through it. Make sure the Rom is specific for your device. Not any Rom will work and the wrong one will brick it. These are basic instructions and are only meant to show you what to look for on the forums. The forums have "stickies" where a lot of this basic information can be found.
The galaxy sII General forum had some good stickies that can help. Read and 're-read them until you'll comfortable.

Oh boy. I think I did it. I flashed TWRP through ODIN. With CM10 from nrvate do I just point TWRP to the file and that's it?
Wipe system, cache and dalvik cache. Then point twrp (install) to the rom. Then install the gapps and then reboot.

What about Google Apps? Where do I get that?
When I wipe does that remove all of my apps and info??!?
No it doesn't remove your apps, but I'd back those up first just in case. The gapps package should be found where you found the Rom.
Ps factory reset will delete your apps.

Ugh. I just flashed and rebooted from TWRP. I get the Samsung screen and then a black screen and then nothing......
Just posted to to CM10 thread. Hopefully, it's an easy fix.
Give it sometime and then try re booting. If you can still get to twrp you can restore, you did a nandriod back up,right?
If that doesn't work you may be soft bricked. If so go to sammobile.com and down load the stock Rom and flash it through Odin. Hopefully you don't need that but it'll bring you back to where you started. But I hope you backed everything up. Because your tab will be like New again.
Sent from my SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
I tried rebooting again and now I can get to the Cyanogenmod splash screen. It just sits there though....
That's a good sign, your not soft bricked. What version of twrp are you using? I'd try going back into twrp and wiping the cache and dalvik and then under advanced, fix the permissions and then reboot.

If that doesn't work then you'll have to do a clean install which means a factory reset. Back everything up first though with something like titanium backup pro.
Then do the factory reset, the wipes and install the Rom and gapps. After booting you'll have to resetup your Gmail account and then install titanium backup again Then you can restore your apps and data.
Sent from my SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Dang. That didn't work. I'm using TWRP 2.1.4.
Ok, I'll restore, then back up with Titanium and do what you said.
Thanks.
I know you can get this running on your i957 because I did. But I went through what your going through too. I'm using twrp 2.3.1.1. If you Google twrp i957 you see a goo.im download, get the .tar file. It will install over your twrp version thru Odin.
But I'm pretty sure the factory install will do the trick.

Hi
I am helping on behalf of my friend with his phone. He told me he had rooted and even flashed a custom rom which I assume when he told me he doesn't have touchwiz.
Now the problem is that when he hangs up a call the screen just goes completely black and needs to talk the battery out. Sometimes even he has problems booting up into android and gets some random script.
Now I would like to know if I could solve the problem if I flashed a custom rom via clock work mod? What other tools would I need?
Thanks

Try doing a factory reset!

I forgot to tell you in the original post that this was all triggered after doing a factory reset. Any ideas?
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
Yh just flash a compatible rom via recovery or Rom manager. Just make sure you read the thread first to see if there are any problems/bugs and what is required before hand. Best to do a complete wipe before flashing though.
Before flashing try to do another factory reset and see if that solves the problem. Along with that delete the cache and dalvik from recovery (3 button combo) and fix permissions. If after all that the same happens then flash the rom. If your not sure of what you are doing then find out before you do start. Just in case something else goes wrong.
I talked to my friend and he told me the phone isn't rooted. He's using android 2.3.2. Is there a guide to rooting for this device?
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
There are loads of guides for rooting, look in general section most of them are pinned.
I suggest he reflashes the same rom that way there are minimal chances of any bugs but if he wants a custom rom then make sure you look for one that is very stable. Unless he wishes to learn how to flash and everything that comes with it. I warn it will become addictive.
For the stock roms go here and make an account. Then click on firmware. And follow the clicks... You can also find guides on there of how to do it. Basically how to navigate on the site, how to flash the roms on the site etc all on that site.
If you still want root and only root then search for cf root in android development. Chainfire has an extensive list of rooted kernals, the first post should explain everything, you may ave to read it twice
Edit: Link
Edit: I just understood what you meant by that PM... I suggest you/ your friend sticks to stock and use the first link. However if you really want a custom rom, start with this[ (link arrived...) It is a Darky Rom from their website. Really all you will need is the DarkyROM 10.2 RE Odin ROM and you will be rooted. From there you can flash anything. However the link i provided is to their latest rom i believe and is meant to be fairly stable.
May i remind you that once you flash you will have lost warranty and support from Samung etc. Until you flash stock firmware back on. Also when flashing be careful and know what you are doing, it is all at your own risk

Can you give me the name of the firmware you DL from samfirmware, and if possible the link..
BUT really all you need is a .pit file and asingle .tar file. There may be 3 .tar files (code, modem and csc). The instructions should give you the information of where to put each or the files should be clearly named..
Apparently there was only one tar file. I already flashed the stock rom yesterday and flashed cf root. I also instructed my friend how to flash custom roms. It is all good now. Thank you!

You can use stock kernel and overclock at the same time.
I finally tried it last night but I.got stuck in a loop I believe.. I tried flashing thriller.. lucky I installed cwm recovery and had backed up my last phone. When I flash a.new Rom do I have to return the phone to factory settings? The tutorial I was using was for the old version on cwm recovery and didn't translate to the new one so I basically had to make an educated guess.

This is exactly what I did. I installed cwm recovery. I.backed up my phone. I downloaded the thriller zip. Connected my.phone to computer and cut and pasted the thriller zip folder onto my SD card. I booted in cwm recovery. And clicked install from SD I found the thriller Rom and downloaded it. Once it was done I clicked re booted normally and when I did this it only showed a bunch of colors coming.g together into and x and did that for 10 minutes until I booted into cwm recovery again and restored from my latest back up. Anything I did wrong or didn't do? Any help would be appreciated.

Extremely unnecessary wipes.
Factory reset does these three things.
Wipes /data
Wipes /cache
Wiping dalvik-cache is useless in a factory reset as "dalvik-cache" is stored in "/data".
OK so from your experience am I doing it right except for the factory wipe? Or are the wipes unnecessary? Thanks for the print responses too!

Its important to know what version software your running. I believe the thriller rom only works on android software version 2.2 aka froyo. If your phone is running 2.3 gingerbread that would be the reason why the rom didn't work. Check in settings>aboutthisphone>androidversion to see which software you've got. I'm relatively new to all this also but I hope I helped

I'd suggest always doing a wipe when going from ROM to ROM.
This is how I do my wipes.
NANDROID current ROM
Flash new ROM
If I even see one force close, I factory reset.

You'll have to try the ROMs for yourself. I can't say for myself as a dev.
I personally like thrill seeker. The original developer had to give up on it because he's been busy, but another dev (Bdadd34) has picked it up and is continuing to work on it. I like it because its stable and very simple to flash and I don't have to flash to a different baseband (which I've never tried). Also from reading on here for a while I know lestat's acidhazard rom is a favorite among most not only for the thrill here in the US, but also for a lot O3D users. His is a rom kitchen so you pretty much build the rom with features you want. its still a little over my head but lestat has a great reputation on here for being super helpful. I'm sure he'd explain it much better or just check out his website which I'm sure a link is in the post for his rom.

I'm using Dark's acidhazard rom with acura's beast 1.3 extreme low voltage kernel. I have no complaints and the support from dark is incredible. I'm on v20p too and I haven't experienced any ghost calls yet. *knocks on wood* I would definitely recommend acid hazard..

Hello,
first of all, I am a total xda-noob (as told by the video) and my deeper Android knowledge is quite small.
Well, I'm seriouly considering to put the Cyanogen mod on my phone and now I have a question about going back to the stock ROM. I've made a backup of the stock ROM using Clockworkmod Recovery and this made seven files which can be seen in the added image. Now I'm wondering how I can go back to the stock ROM if CM doesn't fit me. I know I have to restore the backup in recovery mode but I think I'm right if I say this isn't enough. Can someone tell what to do exactly, as I am very cautionous. Or are there other ways to flash my stock ROM? Thanks in advance! MY CURRENT ANDROID VERSION IS GINGERBREAD 2.3.5
P.S. If this is already answered in another thread or if this placed wrongly, please tell me and I apologize for that.
UPDATE
After some searching I found this small tutorial which fitted my expectations. It said that it can indeed simply be done by restoring it in recovery mode by simply selecting the backup folder. Can someone comfirm this?
Almost right.
Cyanogenmod roms use a different format for the system, called 'ext4'. Stock roms use 'rfs' format.
Before restoring you have to convert to rfs. The easy way to do this is flashing a stock firmware with odin and your phone connected to the pc.
Quick guidelines to restore stock backup:
-flash a stock firmware through odin
-root
-flash cwm through recovery
-restore your backup
-you'll have everything exactly the same way you had it when creating the backup.
If you don't get any of the steps, read through the forum, specially the stickies (you wouldn't have opened this thread if you did so in the first place).

Thank you for answering. About everything is clear now and I understand what I'll have to do. I now understand there is indeed a difference between restoring and flashing a ROM. I've found an online guide which tells me how to use Odin. Only one more question: before using Odin, do I have to factory reset and clear cache partion? I think I do but I'm not quite sure. And if I do this before using Odin, will my phone even be able to boot in recovery mode/download mode? Thanks in advance!

When I say stable, I mean no reboots or lockups in the past 24 hours. No problems with the menu in Titanium Backup either.

In order to flash this, you must be using the twrp recovery, not clockworkmod. I also format my partitions first using the Darkside Super Wipe Ext4. I'll attach both.

I took a leap of faith and that is exactly how to do it. I am a few minutes in and it looks great.

After a day or two, let us know if you had any lockups. I had to go back to ICS for the moment as I was missing important calls when it was locked up and I didn't notice.
I really prefer it over ICS.
I myself haven't had any lockups as of the 9/30 nightly

Good deal. I went for it again and flashed last night before I went to sleep and it hasn't locked yet. If that bug is gone, then we're all set.
I was updated my note with official JB 4.1.2 using odin pc and got pda from samfirmware.com
It has been 4 days since updated and now my note get laggy-performance (gsming, tasking, graphics) and drain battery fast. Bad graphic while play a game and 'unexpected error is occured' pop-up shown are make me mad, regret with this jb update.
I had asked this before and get some advices, such as get kernel (a lot of it kinds), custom rom, etc. I dont even know about that at all. it just make me more confused. So, please tell me about some stuff around this problem and kernel-rom-etc.
Thanks a lot for your coming to notice and help me any futher.

Stock firmware is the original samsung firmwares not edited not rooted not tweaked nothing
ROM could be many thing TW is like samsung based firmware but has a few extra touches like rooting some tweaks and apps that requires root stuff like that
And another kind is on CyanogenMod this sort of roms offers speed more smoothnes and lot better performance than touchwiz but still with it you cant use s-pen features like on the stock and some other bugs
And there are AOKP they are similiar in looks like CyanogenMod but with a really masive customizations available in there
So thats the main thing you should kniw

you can try wiping /system /preload /data /cache /dalvik cache and flash the stock rom again or you can try custom roms of your choice after reading from here. (dont ask which is the best, just read reviews, watch youtube videos and decide for yourself)
Edit: you can flash philz kernel first from here first and then do all the wipes:

Look, you're having problems with the stock ROM, after the update. Now u have some choices,
1)Going back to ICS using sammobile and ODIN.
2)Flashing the PhilZ kernel using the link given by treacherous_hawk and then doing those wipes and again install JB using ODIN, like you did earlier. yes it'll wipe all the data so better back up the phone on PC before doing the wipes.
3) Use custom ROMs. You can read about the custom ROMs in the Android development forum, there are methods to root with the CWM recovery and then how to install custom ROMs.

Yesterday I had flashing philz kernel XXLT6 and then did rooted with rootsuperuser file (install at cwm).
And now when turn on phone, opening 'galaxy note n7000' show with caution sign, that sign was never shown before. Is it safe for my note? Was it true behave?
What should i have to do? with right step actually. What first, what then, what last.
FYI: my pda stock rom DXLSE

you got the yellow exclamation mark because you used the .tar file for philz kernel. if you use the .zip file and flash it from stock recovery you automatically get root and no yellow triangle. You can remove the yellow triangle using the "triangle away" app from play store( paid version, if you consider donating) or search for free version on XDA. use that to get rid of yellow triangle.
That is the yellow triangle you've got. Don't worry mate. It's just a symbol, if u wanna get rid of it, go to the Android development forum here and there will be a thread for how to remove yellow triangle, read that. The sign is nothing to be worried about. Now you have rooted, you can flash the various custom ROMs and be extremely carefull to follow the instructions in the ROM thread before you flash.
Hmm okay guys.
So um, what should i have to do first? Wiping data and then install new stock rom or reinstall kernel firstly or what?
I was read in android dev.thread and got nothing exactly the same with my problems. I need some right step to doing stuff (philz kernel, wipe data, update new stock), so that nothing bad will happen to note.
Thanks brfore

if you are not on safe kernel, you should install safe kernel first like philz (which i guess you already did) boot into recovery mode and do all the wipes (if you do not want to save any data). put the phone in download mode connect to computer, open pc odin, click pda select the stock rom from save location and click start. Once finished put the philz kernel on ext sd card (the one corresponding to your stock rom) and go to stock recovery and install zip from ext card and select the philz kernel .zip file and you should be good to go.

Once finished wiping, we should choose 'reboot system' or just 'power off' , and go to download mode after that?

If the contacts are in phone memory they would get deleted.. If you go to mounts/storage and choose the last option mount usb while connected to computer and delete everything on internal memory (not on external sd) you will be able to clear up usb storage space too but then you will lose what's app data (example)..
